Bloggers summit in Mindanao is a go! 2007-05-25 21:27:47 As I’ve announced at I.T. Talks!, we will be holding the 1st Mindanao bloggers summit sometime in October 2007, in time with the 6th MICT Congress. This was proposed a few months back by Councilor Pete Laviña, and is now finally going to happen.

Feels GREAT to be Pinoy! 2007-05-23 12:51:12 I’ve been tagged again, this time by Aileen. Three things that make me proud to be Filipino:
Filipinos are highly adept in languages. I personally know of a number of Pinoy
s who can speak at least 4 languages. And a lot of us speak three tongues with ease: Pilipino, our own regional language or dialect, and English. Put a Pinoy in Japan, Saudi Arabia… and he’ll soon be speaking the local language in no time!

5 revealing things about me 2007-05-22 06:56:23 Bob Martin has tagged me back, this time for a meme game on 5 revealing things
about yourself. I suppose these are stuff that not many people know about you…. About me, that is. Bob actually tagged my Ang Dabawenyo blog, but I’d rather play these blogger games right here. So here goes.

This is my blogbase 2007-05-20 10:56:29 Just now I realized that I’d been inconsistent about where I post when I blog about blogging. I’ve used this blog to talk about, for example, blogging convictions. And I’ve used Ang Dabawenyo when I was blogging about the 1st Davao Bloggers Party. And I’ve also posted blogging-related stuff at I.T. Talks!
So now I’m finally deciding to keep blogging topics right here at Blogie Blog. This is, after all, my blogbase.

New and emerging blogs 2007-05-18 09:05:25 Janette Toral has embarked on an ambitious writing project called Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs in 2007. Janette aims to collate the blog picks of her extensive network of colleagues, friends and fellow bloggers, and subsequently come up with the top ten. This is my contribution to this worthwhile undertaking.

Spirit of volunteerism 2007-05-16 14:27:27 It’s 2:30 in the morning, and I’ve just come from the Namfrel Davao computer center, which I’ve been managing for three days now. So far we’ve been able to encode and transmit election returns from over 250 poll precincts — not a bad feat, considering we only have less than 10 volunteers at any given time. Most of the volunteers are assigned in the field and in headquarters. Davao has more than 3,000 precincts, by the way.

Found you online! 2007-05-11 09:19:08 For those of us who’ve been online
since way back when, we’ve seen an exponential increase in the number of social networking sites (SNS), such as Friendster and MySpace. In other languages, as well, this type of community-based online service has proliferated all over the Web. And all of them pretty much offer the same basic services: building a group of friends, online dating, even blogging. FYO1 is different. In fact, it’s the first of its kind that I’ve seen so far.

Davao’s mangoes 2007-05-08 07:14:59 Yesterday I had a chance to meet up with my opposite number from the Mango Industry Cluster. Tony Teh is the private-sector chairman of the said cluster, which was put together by the National Economic Development Authority and the Department of Agriculture - Region XI. Yours truly is with the ICT Industry Cluster, which is being overseen by the Department of Trade & Industry - Region XI.

Of blogging and convictions 2007-05-03 11:54:20 I just want to share a great new idea I’ve found at a fellow blogger’s site. It’s about “blog convictions“, as coined by Jayvee of A Bugged Life. The excerpt below is particularly evocative, in my opinion.
This got me thinking about how blogs are extensions, or manifestations rather of our own personal convictions. Thus, I’d like to ask you to sit back from your computer monitor and think about your personal BLOG CONVICTIONS. Why did I start this blog? How has this blog evolved through time? Am I still on track with my original vision?
Why don’t you check it out? Who knows, Jayvee might be right about becoming a better blogger if you define your own blog conviction.

Alphabet soup 2007-05-30 23:08:32 One of my readers recently asked me about my inclination to use accented vowels in my posts. Stuff like ‘vis-à-vis’, ‘über’, ‘résumé’. It’s not really necessary, but to me it looks pretty. So there. She did ask me to teach her how to get these accented vowels (and consonants) to display on web pages. I think I’ll share it with everyone who’ll care to read through.

Reviewing a reviewer 2007-05-30 12:41:35 I’ve accepted a review opportunity from ReviewMe, for a blog called The NextPost. It purports to be “centered around writing reviews of websites, books, products and services.” And the author apparently also does copywriting and editing. Just up my alley, I thought, and that’s why I accepted the offer to review the site.

You can’t please everyone 2007-06-04 22:21:02 Yesterday I met up with my two closest Japanese friends, Ichi and Shin. Ichi had gone back to Japan for a month-long vacation and yesterday was my first time to see him back. And Shin, he’d been gone for years, having already transferred to Bulgaria after living in Davao for more than 3 years. Sadly, he’ll be gone again before the month is out.
Ever since I started having up-close-and-personal contacts with the Japanese, Ichi and Shin have guided me along the intricate and occasionally confusing pathways of Japanese interpersonal relations. Be it in friendships, business affiliations, temporary liaisons — the Japanese have patterns of accepted behavior, probably codified in their genes. For a non-Japanese, it can be a struggle comprehending those complex and unwritten rules of conduct.

Watch your language! 2007-06-12 08:31:03 In whatever language
, when you write, it’s always sound practice to do it well. This has been the case in ‘traditional’ media, where we’ve been treated to titillating and immensely gratifying written works of art. Consider the Inquirer column of Conrado de Quiros, for example: he has a way with words that leaves you panting for more. In blogging, on the other hand, the proper use of language is not exactly prevalent. Perhaps it’s due to the nature of blogging that grammatical discipline, for one, is rather lax in this particular medium. Just the same — even though there’s no such thing as a language police in the blogosphere — I believe that being conscious of good writing style goes a long way. Especially if you intend to be a problogger.

Lakbayan - a cool service online 2007-06-14 02:42:19 It’s one of those things on the Web that, when you see it, makes you ask, ‘Now why didn’t I think of that?’ My blog-friend Migs pointed me to this cool site, Lakbayan: How much of the Philippines have you visited? It presents you with a list of Philippine destinations, and you get to tick each one according to whether you’ve been there or not, etc. Why don’t you just head on over and get your own Philippine map, like the one I have here? It’s a nice representation of just how much of the country you’ve ever visited.

Do the dots 2007-06-19 22:25:33 ‘Punctuation marks? Those pesky little squiggles that make writing so complicated?’ Well, if you aren’t in the habit of using them, this is probably how you’d feel about punctuation marks. Most people get away with using just 3 kinds: the period, the comma and the question mark. But if you’re serious about writing, knowing how to use more of these written symbols will help you get your message across much more clearly.
Punctuation marks are used to help you organize your thoughts, so that you can convey them in the way that you intend. Conversely, misuse — and especially abuse — of punctuation can result in misunderstanding, in your failure to communicate properly. Or worse: your inability to properly use colons, apostrophes, dashes, etc. could make you look, well, rather lacking in intellectual acuity.

Cagayan de Oro trip 2007-06-24 05:05:43 The last time I was in Cagayan de Oro was almost a year ago (July 2006), when I went there with two friends for a short vacation. This time, I took the trip with another good friend, Rodney Jao, who had a speaking engagement at the Northern Mindanao ICT Summit. I just tagged along actually, although it was a perfect excuse for me to go and meet up with Kagay-anon bloggers.

‘…Nasa tao ang gawa’ 2007-07-04 08:06:55 I do not disbelieve that God answers prayers. But it’s been said often enough that He does so in His own time and through His own mysterious ways. To me this implies that, though we pray for something, it still depends on ourselves whether or not we deserve what we’re asking for. In other words, prayer serves but to strengthen our own resolve. God our Father, in His infinite wisdom, shows us the way to attain our goals by our own means. (more…)

Blogger eyeball with Ms. Google Philippines 2007-07-01 06:48:53 Last night’s blogger and SEO get-together at 51 Coffee Shop with Aileen Apolo (Google
country consultant) gave us a chance to meet up with a few new faces in the Davao blogosphere. We were hoping to get more people to show up, but I guess the rain was one culprit why many didn’t make it. Hmmm… why is it that each time we hold a bloggers’ meet-up here, it rains…. But Andrew, Jun, Marc, Migs and Ria were present, of course — the usual suspects are always where the action is, come hell or high water. (more…)

Blog contests 2007-07-06 15:18:49 One fun way of driving traffic to your blog — as well as increase awareness of it — is to run a contest. If done with proper care and timing, this can promote your online presence exponentially (”viral marketing”, as many bloggers are now wont to say). Plus, you get to build a loyal base of blog readers.
Blog contests are like tag or meme games, but with rewards. You could do something big (i.e., the prizes are expensive or really desirable); or something more down-to-earth. If it’s big, it’s most probably the winner’s loot that will bring participants in droves. There’s nothing like winning, say, an iPod or a digicam… heck, why not a 40″ flat-panel LCD TV!? (more…)

Community blog on the rise 2007-07-06 07:09:11 Today I finally gave myself practically the whole day to sit down and start a site I’d been planning since early this year — www.davaoblogs.net (davaoblogs.com is the Davao Blogspace). Actually, I’ve been using davaoblogs.net as an email service, powered by Google Apps, but kept the website itself on the backburner… Until now.
Now it’s been conceived and born all in one afternoon as a community blog, called the Davao Bloggers Network, with Marc J., Christian T. and myself as the initial authors. It’s generally going to be all about blogging — tips, best practices, what have you — from the perspective of Filipino bloggers. But who knows what my co-authors will come up with, eh?
Why don’t you head on to the brand-spanking-new blogsite and leave us some feedback? Some link-love would be nice, too!

Poll results: ‘Y do U blog?’ 2007-07-11 04:45:04 Even with just a few respondents, the poll I ran presents it quite plainly that people blog “to keep a journal” mostly. This could actually be accurate, judging by the sheer number of personal and ‘emo’ blogs out there. The answer “to be heard” was meant for probloggers and advocacy bloggers to choose. Well, the poll is still live…
I was surprised that there were actually people who read my blog but don’t blog themselves. It was a very straightforward and simple poll, though. Maybe I’ll do a more extensive survey in the future.

The Davao Blogspace is temporarily down 2007-07-10 03:46:41 I’m really sorry about this, but I did a monumental clusterf–k when I was upgrading DavaoBlogs.com. As a result, the aggregator site’s down and inaccessible for a few more days. There’s more. The Davao Blogs Directory (http://dir.davaoblogs.com) is also down, because it lives in the same server.
What happened was, I upgraded the WordPress installation from v2.0.8 to v2.1.3, without deactivating the plugins. Next thing I knew, the PHP scripts were wreaking havoc all over the place. Good thing that I was able to keep a very recent backup of the site! And then I read somewhere that WP 2.1.3 isn’t a very stable release…. That’s what I get for not reading reviews first. (I can almost hear my friends chanting, “RTFM! RTFM!”)
So, please bear with me for a few more days. The Davao Blogspace will be up and running again soon enough, on a faster and more powerful server!

Justice or just tiis? 2007-07-09 14:08:04 The Philippine justice system, I’m sorry to say, is in the pits. Oh, this has been said countless times before. But recently I had a good look at just how bad the situation is. With the forward strides that our country’s IT industry has been making, it’s sad and frustrating that a highly necessary institution of ours is stuck in the Medieval Ages.
My friend Harold B., a fresh grad who’s full of potential and hope, was wrongfully incarcerated three months ago. He was released just last week: he was found to have had nothing to do at all with the illegal recruitment case against an agency that the police raided that time. (more…)

Free feed buttons for your blog 2007-07-14 01:44:18 I was blog-hopping after not doing it for a while, and I chanced upon Karlo’s PinoyBlogero.com. He’d linked to MindanaoBloggers.com to help spread the word about the upcoming bloggers summit in Davao this October, and that’s how I found his site. Thanks for the helping hand, Karlo!
What attracted me to the blog, and made me stay and browse, was the blogger’s use of anime characters that he’d drawn himself. I like this style, because I try to use it myself over at AngDabawenyo.com (although it’s not me doing the drawings of “Dave” but my cousin Ria). Aside from photos and videos, I believe that original artwork like drawings and even paintings can encourage your blog’s readers to stay longer and read more posts. (more…)
