Memorial Day Parade 2007-05-23 21:59:00 My family always enjoys the Memorial
Day parade held in New Canaan. Many town groups participate and do their part to honor America's servicemen and women. It is a lot of fun so bring your kids.
The parade starts at 9:30 am on Monday, May 28th and goes down Oenoke Ridge to Main Street (past the Fire Department).
However, as a Marine Corps veteran, I want to say that an even better way to Read more:Parade

Things to do in New Canaan & Beyond 2007-05-20 13:47:00 If you or your family are bored and you need some help thinking of things to do, it is worth buying this week's New Canaan Advertiser (5/17). It contains a free booklet (called "100 Things To Do") that lists a number of great day trips. However, you have to hurry as next week's Advertiser comes out (I think) on Tuesday and they don't have the booklet up on their website (yet).
The booklet lists

Noise Control - Part 2 2007-05-15 21:50:00 Nothing from Judy Neville on the possibility of improving New Canaan's noise control legislation. Maybe she is getting too comfortable as First Selectwoman and feels that she does not have to answer her constituents.
Let me try her adversaries and see if I get a response. More later!

Mother's Day 2007-05-13 08:10:00 For all of you New Canaan Dads - Don't forget it is Mother's Day or life will be hellish for a while. :)
Forget going to the Food Emporium for flowers, I was there at 7 am and the hordes had begun to descend on their meager (and extremely expensive) selection.
After calling my Mom, cleaning the house and making breakfast for my darling wife, I am taking a mini-break. However, my wife is already
New Canaan May Fair 2007-05-09 18:27:00 If you are bored this weekend or want to entertain the kids, you should consider attending the St. Mark's May Fair on Saturday (5/11) in New Canaan. This festival has games, rides, food and much more. I will be taking my kids. Hope to see you there!
Here is a map if you don't know where St. Mark's is located.
I have also posted a link to the St. Mark's May Fair page (but they need to create a
New Canaan Noise Control 2007-05-05 20:38:00 My Saturday "recover-from-a-hectic-week" siesta was rudely interrupted by the sound of leaf blowers and lawn mowers. Damn, I thought that we had passed legislation in New Canaan to restrict this type of noise.
In order to see if there was indeed any regulations restricting this type of activity, I went to the town website. However, I couldn't find a thing. * Note to town webmaster - You need a Read more:Noise

What happened to the Jelliff Mill Restaurant? 2007-05-04 19:22:00 What happened to the proposed Jelliff Mill Restaurant in New Canaan? This was a restaurant that a couple of folks were trying to sneak into a residential area (via the purchase of a grandfathered-in wood working shop). It was scheduled to be located near the corner of Jelliff Mill and Route 106 (next to exit 36 on the Merritt). Of course, this is well way from New Canaan's commercial district.
Planes & New Canaan - Part 2 2007-04-29 11:29:00 As a follow up to my post regarding increased air traffic over New Canaan, there are now petitions expressing opposition to the FAA’s new flight plans that can be signed or picked up for circulation at the First Selectman’s Office in Town Hall.
Encourage Judy Neville to fight the FAA.

Plane Noise & New Canaan 2007-04-28 06:31:00 New Canaan has a great quality of life. However, one area of concern is the noise created by low flying aircraft on the way to and from airports such as LaGuardia and Westchester Airport. This noise can be quite loud at times given some of the smaller aircraft seem to be cruising just above tree level.
Well the FAA is now proposing even more flights over our town in order to speed up arrivals Read more:Noise

Nor'Easter 2007-04-19 18:19:00 What did you do when the nor'easter hit New Canaan on Sunday?
I was busy cleaning rain gutters that I should have done last year... cough... cough. I was also trying to unblock drainage pipes and get my sump pump working. Of course, the whole time while I was getting soaked, the rest of my family watched & laughed at poor old Dad. :) I can't wait for my boys to get bigger then it will be "Get Read more:Easter
Old Shaw's Supermarket 2007-04-15 15:53:00 The old Shaw's supermarket was finally torn down in the center of New Canaan. Eton Centers, the owner of the site, plans to create a facility that could house two new restaurants and a new drugstore. At least, this was the plan as of late 2006. However, a fight over parking could change things (people are worried about even more traffic and overcrowding in the center of town).
I miss Shaw's Read more:Supermarket
New Canaan Answer Book 2007-04-12 22:26:00 The New Canaan Advertiser puts out a booklet every year called the "New Canaan Answer Book". It is a great resource for everyone because it answers tons of questions ranging from "What are the hours of the local Post Office?" to "What is there for teenagers to do in town?".
I have added a link to their online version at the top of this blog in case you have lost your copy (look for the **NC
Badder than a Deer 2007-04-10 22:21:00 About a year ago, when one of my sons was very angry with me, he sputtered “Daddy, you are so bad. You are badder than a… a… a… DEER!”. Of course, I burst out laughing.
However, deer are not a laughing matter at our house. We dread the appearance of these “cute” animals. During the first year that I moved into New Canaan, I planted a ton of flowers. I woke up one day to find all of the young
Unaccompanied Teens 2007-04-08 06:49:00 I am amazed by the lack of parental supervision that applies to many of the younger teens and pre-teens in New Canaan. For example, last year when my wife & I went to see the movie "Borat", we were stunned to see so many kids (who appeared to between 10 and 13) sitting by themselves in the movie theater. If you remember, this was the shock "comedy" that contained a scene of two naked men Read more:Teens
New Canaan Restaurant Map 2007-04-06 06:53:00 I am in the process of creating a Google map that lists all of New Canaan's restaurants and provides useful information such as their phone number and websites. I hope that people will add their reviews of these restaurants to the blog (in order to direct New Canaanites to the best food in town & encourage the "laggards" to improve their menu/service).

Kiwanis Park 2007-04-03 19:39:00 If you have any little kids, you might want to visit this hidden gem in New Canaan. Kiwanis Park has a sandy beach, a “pond” to swim in, a playground next door and its own concession stand (where you can get food, drinks and ice cream). Moreover, it is not swamped with people – unlike the Waveny Pool. Two thumbs up!
You will need a pass to get in (but luckily it does not cost much). Click here
Weed and Duryea 2007-04-01 11:10:00 Since it is officially the Spring, I decided to do a little garden work. First stop, the local home improvement/garden center. While New Canaan's Weed and Duryea is more expensive than Home Depot and has a much more limited selection, it is very convenient (as Weed and Duryea is located in the middle of town) and the service is great.
In case you are interested in gardening or need some home

New Canaan & Antiques 2007-05-28 07:17:00 First off the bat, this is a blatant ad (for my wife - Veronica). She has threatened me with death unless I mentioned her upcoming antique show on this blog.
She will at the 45th annual Ridgefield Antique Show on June 2nd. Her booth number is N12 and she will be exhibiting Chinese antiques.
The antique show will be held at the Ridgefield Community Center, The Lounsbury House, 316 Main Read more:Antiques
New Canaan Soccer 2007-06-02 09:43:00 If you want a cheap way to wear out your little monsters (um... I mean little darlings) then join the New Canaan Recreational Department's youth soccer league. It only costs $35 and it is open to boys & girls. You get an hour of fun each weekend. It is too late to join this year's program but keep it in the back of your mind for next year (as your kids will love it).

New Canaan Library - Book Sale 2007-06-05 22:07:00 For all of you who are seeking a bargain, you should check out the New Canaan Library
's book sale. There are thousands of books at very low prices. My family & I often get great kid books (i.e. Where's Waldo? and Richard Scarry books). So get there early or we will buy it all (said with a maniacal laugh).
The sales starts on June 8 and runs through June 11. Things get cheaper towards the end of
New Canaan Library Sale - Part 2 2007-06-09 12:19:00 I hope you are not missing the New Canaan library book sale. We just picked up some great kid books and videos for $2 each. Moreover, the history & fiction sections are very strong this year with lots of recent works by well-known authors. The sale runs through Monday.
Well I am off, the boys & I have a Superman video to watch! Courtesy of the book sale, of course.

July 4th in New Canaan 2007-06-19 21:33:00 New Canaan holds a great July 4th festival ("New Canaan Family Fourth") each year in Waveny Park. The fireworks are awesome and are so loud that my kids were scared silly last year by the end of the show.
The cost is only $25 (per car) so this is great cheap fun. Just remember to bring along a picnic dinner. The park opens at 5pm for the celebration.
Also you need to get your mail-in
Coyotes in New Canaan - Part 2 2007-06-18 21:00:00 Just got an email back from Maryann Kleinschmitt, New Canaan's Animal Control Officer. Here is what she said about New Canaan's coyote problem:
HI -- THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN REALLY BE DONE. SETTING OUT TRAPS WOULD NOT STOP THE ANIMALS FROM HAVING ENOUGH YOUNG IF A FOOD SUPPLY IS ABUNDANT ----- WHICH IT IS TURKEY, RABBITS, GROUNDHOGS, CATS, SMALL DOGS AND DEER. BUT I AM LOGGING IN WHEN A COYOTE Read more:Coyotes
