New Canaan & Toys for Tots
2007-11-21 20:03:00
As a Marine (many years ago), I was pleased to get this message from Wendy of Karl Chevrolet Hummer: KARL Chevrolet HUMMER and KARL Automotive Service of Greenwich have assumed a leadership role again this year for the largest U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots collection project in lower Fairfield County. Last year the group which KARL and co-sponsor Cox Radio coordinated collected more

New Canaan & Best Schools
2007-11-30 20:29:00
US News & World Report just released their list of America's top 100 high schools. I was surprised & dismayed to see that New Canaan did not make this list. We only received a "silver medal" - so we are good but not great. Harvard, Princeton, Columbia (my Alma Mata) & other Ivy League schools boost their academic prowess by creating multi-billion dollar endowments in order to hire the best

New Canaan Schools & Second Place
2007-12-05 18:25:00
In case, you didn't read my previous blog post regarding the US News & World Report article on the country's best high schools, I have listed below the area schools that placed above New Canaan (we were ranked in the second class "Silver Level"). Come on! We can do better. New Canaan was ranked below Rye, Scarsdale and even Irvington. 7. High Technology High School, Lincroft, NJ 15. Stuyvesant

New Canaan & Winter Storm
2007-12-15 10:07:00
Another modest winter storm is expected to hit New Canaan tonight. See our weather page for more details. Looks like everyone is stocking up for the storm. I was over at Weed & Duryea picking up some salt to put on the driveway and the store was swamped. People were buying snow shovels by the dozen. The town's supermarkets were also packed. Everyone seemed to be buying a month's worth of food.

Junk Mail & Global Warming
2007-12-21 05:36:00
Every holiday season, New Canaan gets inundated with junk mail. Since we are a wealthy community, every company on the planet sends us their catalogs. Unfortunately, 99% of the time, we just dump this useless junk back into the recycling bin. Beyond breaking the back of the mailman, this flood of catalogs contributes to global warming and the use of imported oil. We have to cut down trees for

Top High Schools - Part 2
2007-12-26 18:36:00
One of my visitors stated the following about the inability for New Canaan to make the top 100 high schools in the US News & World Report rankings: Will, this makes sense after looking at the criteria for the ranking. One of the factors, is the percentage of economically disdavantaged kids who surpass state averages on standardized tests. Since NC doesn't have an "economically disadvantaged"

New Canaan Parks
2008-01-26 08:21:20
Here is a map of New Canaan's local parks such as Kiwanis and Waverny. I have also added some of the key highlights from each park (i.e. the "beach" at Kiwanis) - click on the blue markers to read about some of the fun things to do at each park. If you can think of any other parks in town that I have missed, please leave me a message in the commentary section & I will add them to the map. View

Humilating & Futile
2008-01-19 21:28:27
This week, President Bush went hat in hand to beg OPEC to pump more oil in order to help the US economy. For more details, please read this NY Times article. It also has a revealing photo of the Saudi King and President Bush examining one of the rewards of high energy prices, the King's latest prize thoroughbred. You can imagine the scene... The Saudis respond to Bush's plea by stating "Sure,

Weathermen wrong again
2008-01-15 18:18:07
My boys want to sue the weather forecasters. They were so disappointed that they did not get a day off from school. Instead of the promised 5-8 inches of snow, New Canaan got an anemic 1/2 inch (at best). The boys are studying their legal options. More later. :) Will

New Canaan & Airplane Noise
2008-01-11 19:40:22
Since a plane just flew over my house (and most of New Canaan) and was only a few hundred feet above the town, it made a tremendous racket. Cursing, I went to find out how the lawsuit is going against the massive increase in aircraft traffic over New Canaan & Fairfield County. Unfortunately not much "new" news beyond the lawsuit against the FAA but you should definitely visit the region's

New Canaan & Ivy League Schools
2008-01-05 09:30:30
Following up on my educational endowment post and top high schools post, let's see where New Canaan kids are going to college. The New Canaan High School College & Career Center lists the 2004 results (latest data that I could find online). Only 10 attended an Ivy League school out of the 234 listed (if I counted correctly) or 4% percent. Given the strength of our community and the wealth &

New Canaan & Global Warming
2007-12-31 20:13:53
Looking for some New Year's resolutions to help yourself, America and the world? Want to help stop global warming and/or reduce our dependence on foreign oil (which is indirectly funding terrorism)? If so, New Canaan residents can take some of the following simple steps: 1. Replace the standard light bulbs in your house with compact fluorescents or LED light bulbs. This is probably the easiest &

July 4th After-Action Report
2008-07-05 05:11:14
Here are a few of my observations from this year’s Family Fourth: 1. The rain and potential cancellation of the event kept many people away. I would guess that only 60-70% of the normal crowd showed up. 2. The town website needs to display a message that the event is still ON – versus their standard practice of posting when the event has been postponed. Given the drizzle & threat of

New Canaan Farmer's Market
2008-08-29 15:12:46
First off, I want to say that my family loves the New Canaan Farmer's Market . My wife stops by most weekends to find locally grown vegetables and to pick up some delicious pies. Our only concern is that the Farmer's Market has become too popular. The parking lot at the Farmer's Market is overflowing. People are parking on many of the side streets and weekend traffic is becoming very congested in
