Gmail Attachment Capacity Now 20 MB
2007-05-23 08:04:40
People who often attach documents in bulk using their Gmail accounts will love it that Gmail’s attachment capacity has upgraded to 20MB from 10 MB. This will be very helpful to me since I attach large files, usually writeups, often for editing. I just hope my forward-messages-loving (read: SPAMMERS) friends won’t take advantage of this new upgrade from Gmail on sending me videos and glittery flash images in chain email formats. If only there’d be lesser downtimes too, which I’m often experiencing with my Gmail account lately. I’m not sure if it’s because of my connection or something. via GoogleSystem Tags: Gmail capacity, Gmail attachment

Have More Fun GTalking: Create Gmail Emoticons
2007-05-22 08:46:25
Just when I thought, it’s only Yahoo! Messenger that has the most fun emoticons, Rico Mossesgeld, a contract working guru with a very informative blog, shared some tips on how to create more Gmail emoticons aside from the generic ones. Although they’re not as colorful or as emotional such as the crying and laughing emoticons from YM, still something that will make GTalking less of a bore, right? Gmail’s smilies do more than express emotions. Such as hug (awwww), raise its arms up for joy, be a caterpillar, and even give the double-finger salute. All you need is a little imagination , an affinity for one-line ASCII art, and the willingness of your recipient to receive nonsensical messages. Gmail chat only works with online contacts after all. Just one problem, I have no affinity for ASCII art. :`( Check out more of Rico’s post about this. Tags: Gmail, GTalk, emoticons, Rico Mossesgeld

What Drove Google to Go DoubleClick
2007-05-22 00:09:27
Despite numerous hype on security threats, the much controversial purchase of DoubleClick by Google has pushed through and closed at a $3.1 billion deal, about twice as much as the amount Google placed to purchase Youtube.com in the previous year. Google did this to expand their expertise in the field of display advertisements and as a strategy to keep from rival Microsoft to seize the benefits DoubleClick gives its highest bidder. Over the years, investors in Google have been happily gaining rewarding dividends in its success in search results and advertisements which bring a huge chunk of Google’s revenue. Just like any thriving company, Google refused to rest in its laurels and past glories when it decided to take DoubleClick under its wing under a very considerable cost. With this move, Google has definitely secured its potential in expanding itself in the business of being one of the most reliable online businesses in the world, and left little room for the likes of Microsof

Google Custom Search Engine URL Patterns Tips
2007-05-20 03:10:23
For those who have created custom search engines, here are some URL pattern (the method for specifying sites and pages to include in a search engine) info that the Google team has provided to further your knowledge on how to maximize this feature: The simplest type of pattern is the URL of a specific page. You can use an asterisk (or star, in techie vernacular) as a wild card in your pattern to specify a swath of URLs by identifying their common characters. Here’s how it works: rather than add each page of www.site.com to your search engine, you can merely add www.site.com/* and we will include every URL that begins with www.site.com. Similarly, rather than individually adding each subdomain of site.com, you can use the star to include them all: *.site.com will apply to www.site.com, server.site.com, etc. Another way to use patterns is to identify and distill common characters among a set of pages you’d like to include in your index. For example, if I know that all car revi

YouTube Scammed
2007-05-16 07:16:07
A now-removed video clip on Youtube about a woman giving birth to a can of fizzy drink has caused commotion in the world of online video sharing. The half minute-long commercial for energy drink IRN-BRU on YouTube isn’t all that original, or really very funny. All the same, the clip “R0049_TDAU8″ garnered 113 million hits and received a five-star review, with more than 70,000 visitors giving the clip the popular video site’s highest content approval rating. It wasn’t because the YouTube users now have warped taste when it comes to what’s interesting and what’s not. What caused the video to get those millions of hits is the doing of YouTube’s rating system abusers. via Yahoo! News

Search All of Google WITHOUT Site Hopping
2007-05-15 03:52:53
Simply Google an oh-so simple page where all of the Google products and services can all be accessed. All the accounts, the innumerable blogs for the wide variety of services Google provides, and downloads are all in one page! No more googling this time. According to its creator, Chris McEvoy, it was my attempt to expose the hidden google information architecture. Since then I have been keeping the page up to date and have just added a co.uk version, so it seems like a good time to review the past year for Simply Google. One Read/Write Web (where I’ve learned about Simply Google) reader, it’s ugly but damn useful. So give it a try. And if you agree with the useful part, yeah, don’t forget to bookmark it.

BlackBerry 8800 Shows You the Way
2007-05-24 08:39:45
BlackBerry 8800, one of the feature-packed BlackBerry mobile phones, with it QWERTY keypad and GPS, has another feature to boast of - Google Maps for Mobile. Downloading Google Maps for Mobile will inform you automatically where your location is when you check your BlackBerry 8800 smartphone. When you download Google Maps for mobile and fire it up, you’ll notice something quite unusual: a blinking blue dot showing you exactly where you are! You can use your auto-detected location to get directions and perform local searches without even entering your location — instead of “pizza 94043″, just enter “pizza” — and we’ll automatically know you want pizza in the zip code “94043.” When will Nokia smartphones such as the e61i have the same feature? via Google Blog Tags: Google Maps for Mobile, BlackBerry 8800, GPS

A Tool for Niche Bloggers
2007-05-24 07:36:38
If you’re a fan of Google Trends, a service that shows what’s hot in a country which allows comparison to other countries, then you’d be glad Google added the Hot Trends feature. Hot Trends enables users to see a list of the current top 100 fastest-rising Google search queries in the U.S. Users can also select specific dates to see what the top-rising searches were at a given point in time. I find this very useful to those who have or are just planning to setup niche blogs. The more searched the information you deliver, the more chances of getting traffic, right? NOT! If you’re just starting on your blog that is. But with the right content, competition assessment, and blog promotion tactics, sure. As of this writing, the Hot Trends results include the following: 1. american idol winner 2. who won american idol 3. american idol finale Guess you now know what do the Google users in the US have in common, huh? Street View provides users with a rich, immersive browsing experience directly in Google Maps, enabling greater understanding of a specific location or area. Street View imagery will initially be available for maps of the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, Las Vegas, Denver and Miami, and will soon expand to other metropolitan areas. By clicking on the “Street View” button in Google Maps, users can navigate street level, panoramic imagery. With Street View users can virtually walk the streets of a city, check out a restaurant before arriving, and even zoom in on bus stops and street signs to make travel plans. Press rele

How to Use the Gmail Filter Feature
2007-05-29 07:45:00
Gmail ’s spam filtering is not the only functionality of the Gmail filter feature. Here are the other uses of Gmail filter compiled by Lifehacker.org: Archived bookmarks. If you use del.icio.us and other bookmarking services, you can archive them all in a Gmail label (”bookmarks”). Get the feed urls for each of your bookmarking services, enter them in a forwarding service such as rssfwd.com, and then set up a filter to label them all “bookmarks”. Now all your bookmarks are in one place, with Gmail’s great search. Backups. Create a second Gmail account for storage, and create a filter to automatically forward any emails with attachments (”has:attachments”) to this second address. Now you can delete your old emails without guilt or worry. No delete. Some emails you don’t want to delete — those precious ones from your kids, for example, or maybe ones from your boss. Set up a label (”nodelete”) and a filter that puts the nodelete label on emails from (or to) the

Google Apps Helps Colleges Go High Tech
2007-06-09 06:36:02
Aside from the Library Search Project, one of Google ’s “do no evil” educational endeavor is widely gaining popularity - its FREE assistance in modernizing the email systems of schools in the form of Google’s Apps for Education. Google’s Apps for Education allows colleges to dump their often-antiquated e-mail systems and replace them with Gmail, Google’s popular e-mail service. But unlike standard Gmail accounts, schools can maintain their “.edu” addresses, have students log in from school Web sites, brand the system with their own logos and block advertisements that typically appear in standard Gmail accounts. Among the first few schools to benefit from Google Apps include Hope College in Holland, Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. This education program also includes access to Google docs and spreadsheet, Google calendar, and iGoogle. Full report here.   Tags: iGoogle, Google Docs and Spreadsheet, Gmail, Google Apps

Gmail.co.in Now Belongs to Google
2007-06-09 06:01:18
An arbitrator appointed by National Internet Exchange of India made a Chinese national transfer the domain name gmail.co.in to its rightful owner - Google . Google Inc, which launched its website ‘gmail’ in April 2004 worldwide, applied for the registration of the mark in India in 2005. The company had filed a complaint before NIXI seeking transfer of domain name ‘gmail.co.in’ when it came to know that the address was registered by a Chinese national. The arbitrator observed that Zhaoyang registered a company “Gmail Ltd” only after the complaint was filed by Google and the domain name “gmail.co.in” was transfered to the company one day later. Imposing a cost of Rs 50,000 on the Chinese company, the arbitrator said: “The company has failed to furnish any explanation about the adoption of an identical mark. All these indicate that a disputed domain name is got registered and used by respondent in bad faith in respect of the general co

How to Report Paid Links to Google
2007-06-13 05:58:00
Now why would you want to do that in the first place? If you are running a search engine optimization campaign but would rather do it in an organic way, meaning you don’t buy links or any of those easier ways to game search engines, you might outperform competitors without having to pay anyone - report those paid links! Google ’s policy in ranking websites or its Pagerank calculations is not for this method of advertising. Google does not prioritize paid links. And for your convenience, Google has just further facilitated the method of doing this job. Google provided a paid links reporting form which can be found within the Webmaster Tools. Just log in and report sites that are buying and selling links. But if you are selling links for advertising purposes, there are many ways you can designate this, including: - Adding a rel=”nofollow” attribute to the href tag - Redirecting the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt
