Kevin Trudeau - Weight Loss Evangelist or False Health Messiah?
2007-05-19 18:19:38
Born in Massachusetts, 1963, Kevin Trudeau was voted by his high school class as “Most Likely to Succeed”. This was something that came true, indeed, but only at the unfortunate expense of his credibility. Whether he deserves it or not is still a debatable issue. Kevin Trudeau’s Rise to Fame His constant exposure to infomercials shown late night on TV in millions of American households has made the name Kevin Trudeau almost as familiar as, say, Proactiv. His infomercials promoted a wide variety of products that included but are not limited to coral calcium as a dietary supplement, weight loss cures, memory improvement courses, and real investment strategies. Walking Workstations for Sedentary Workers
2007-05-16 06:12:43
Obesity among employees with sedentary occupations is a common thing to happen. What with sitting in front of the computer all getting overstressed with paper work and other sitdown stuff won’t make you fat? As an attempt to address this increasing number of obese workers, scientists designed a vertical workstation that makes a worker do some business tasks while working out. Researchers James Levine and Jennifer Miller designed a vertical work station that allows an office worker to use a computer while walking on a treadmill at a speed of their choice. The machine looks like a regular treadmill superimposed with a metal frame that holds a desk area in front with adjustable arms holding a screen and keyboard with mouse. Read full report. For Weight-Conscious Coffeeholics
2007-05-14 00:19:58
Are you a Starbucks frequenter? Or do you always go gaga over gourmet coffee? I don’t go to Starbucks every so often because it’s too costly and I got accustomed to relishing my Mom’s home-made coffee. Ok, actually, it’s just instant coffee that she concocts with a secret proportion of sugar and coffee especially for me. And I can gulp coffee like there’s no tomorrow everyday especially during crunch time with my home based gigs. However, on average, I drink three cups of coffee everyday. This I’m sure has contributed to my gaining of extra weight every now and then, most particularly during cramming days when I’m left with nothing but computer work and not much bodily activity that would allow me to sweat out. So yeah, if you’d ask if coffee has anything to do with one’s gaining weight, YES! The sugar on coffee is the very reason behind why coffee can make you fat according to experts. (more…)

Milk Promoting Weight Loss Ad to be Ended
2007-05-11 01:57:22
Through the complaint of a group of doctors, an ad campaign suggesting that milk can help people lose weight will be ended soon, according to the Federal Trade Commission. The “Milk Your Diet” ad campaign team still stood for their campaign because according to Susan Ruland, their spokeswoman, there’s enough scientific evidence demonstrating the connection between milk and weight loss. However, The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine contended the weight loss claims were false and misleading. The group, in a 2005 petition, asked the commission to order a halt to the dairy advertisements. The agency did not take that step, but said in a letter to the committee that the groups behind the ads planned to end them. “It is obvious that the industry did not have a leg to stand on,” Neal Barnard, president of the Washington-based doctors committee, said today. His group advocates a vegan diet, which typically includes no animal products. The two marketi

Gastric Bypass Fatality Gauge
2007-05-09 02:23:36
Gastric bypass, a.k.a bariatric surgery is this procedure that is known to cause one to lose weight because it makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass parts of the small intestine. This will consequently make one feel full a lot quickly than when the stomach is in its original size. When food bypass some parts of the small intestine some calories don’t get absorbed easily, too, which also adds to the weight loss effect of this surgery. If you are considering to undergo a weight loss surgery procedure such as gastric bypass but are scared of its risks, there is now a scoring sytem that may help measure the chances of dying from the procedure. The scoring system was first proposed in 2006 by Duke University Medical surgeons and has been validated in a new study with 4,400 participants. The factors considered to get a good estimation of whether a person is at risk of dying from gastric bypass include the patient’s age, gender, blood pressure, weight, and the risk

Fat March: ABC’s Reality Weight Loss Show
2007-05-08 20:44:00
Fat March , a new reality show on losing weight from ABC will be aired on August, 2007. Out of thousands of applicants, it has chosen 12 contestants who are all in need of some help for their weighty issues - some from living a sedentary life while others have gained weight because of eating - the two most usual reasons for extreme weight gain. “Fat March” is based on the British reality show “Too Fat To Walk.” The twist this time is that the participants aren’t in competition with each other. Indeed, if they all stay together by the end of the walk, they can share in a $1.2 million pot. On the other hand, every time someone drops out - or is voted out for being too much of a drag on the others - the pot is reduced by $10,000. - CTNow The contestants are guided by two personal trainers and one of them is Steve Pfeister, a Vero beach trainer. Here is one interview article with some of the Fat March contestant Wendy Wright and Andy Berg.

Taste Still Beats Health in Buying Food
2007-05-25 06:22:07
International Food Information Council made a survey on the attitude of consumers toward food. The important finding include the following: - In the last 12 months, Americans have changed their diets trying to improve their weight either by making their diets healthier or reducing portions that they eat. - Only a small number of the respondents know the ideal number of calories per day that a person should consume depending on his age and weight. - Trans fat is getting more and more notorious for many. - And as the title of this post has mentioned… Eighty-eight percent of Americans considered taste to be priority when buying food, while 72% believed price was most important and 65% put the emphasis on whether the food was healthy. Indeed, there’s more room for nutrition education in the US. Or should the advertising companies should get more whips? via FoodNavigator [image from ps888]

Janet Jackson Knows She Lost Weight When
2007-05-24 00:20:25
I still remember how Ms. Jackson looks when she’s still on the heavier side of the scale. However, news has it that she’s again sporting a washboard ab. Lookie.. Back on how does Janet knows she’s lost weight? Does Jermaine look at her with a grin more often or something? Nope. Her clothes tell her so. She says, “One thing that helps is getting my clothes altered to fit so I can tell when I gain or lose. I used to wear overalls all the time, and my mom said, ‘Baby don’t do that or you won’t know how much you lose.’” I do know that of all, the best indicator that you lost weight is when you see improvements that your very full-body mirror shows you. Clothes can help a lot, too. But how did she really lose weight? On keeping the weight off:?“I have a great support system to keep me on track… But I still don’t like working out. It’s hard for me. I have to push myself to want to do it.”? - US Weekly I wish I have her support

Why Women Store Fat in the Belly
2007-05-30 05:40:37
Ever wondered why women seem to build more fat in the lower body, specifically the belly? It’s not just the genes, so don’t look to your ancestors for someone to blame. It’s your gender and what years of evolution have granted upon the female sex of our species that have a lot to do with why women build belly fat. Fat and the female bodyEvery person, regardless of whether you’re a man or a woman, has a body that was designed to carry and store fat. Fat is used for insulation, not just to provide a layer of protection for the inner organs and tissues but also to protect it against outside elements. Fat also serves as the body’s food, to be used in case a person starves. Women tend to store more fat in the belly because they are naturally predisposed to do so. Women are naturally built to have a smaller percentage of lean muscle and a higher percentage of body fat compared to men. Not only that, female fat cells are 5 times bigger than the male’s. Not onl

Changing Minds, Gaining Weight: Why Do People Diet-Hop?
2007-05-29 06:22:55
Dieting is only one way to lose weight, but some people rely on it entirely for their weight loss problems. This is understandable, given that people have less and less time to tend to their bodies, and more and more sources of low-self-esteem inducing images. Dieting, however, is not easy to carry on for a long time, and people tend to either break their diets, or move on and pick another diet. What causes such diet hopping? First, some people may be impatient with the current weight loss they are experiencing. Some diet programs promise a certain amount of lost pounds within a certain time, but not all these diets work with all kinds of people. There are many factors to consider in a diet, such as a person’s medical background, his or her insulin levels, and his or her speed of metabolism. Plunging headlong into a diet does not necessarily ensure a person of success. (more…)

Meridia aka sibutramine It is an appetite-suppressant that inhibits neurotransmitter levels. When this weight loss pill is used with proper diet, behavioral modification and exercise, it can be very effective in helping people lose weight. Its side effects include constipation, dry mouth, head ache, insomnia, and blood pressure and heart rate increase. It should not be taken if you have hypertension or under SSRI antidpressant meds. 2. Xenical or orlistat It helps in preventing fat absorption in the stomach and small intestine. The fat you eat gets excreted in the stool. The side effects of Xenical include oily spotting, stool urgency and fatty oily stool. It’s reported to go OTC come July 2007. 3. 2007-05-28 14:22:00
When Oprah Winfrey first appeared in “The Color Purple,” she was a young woman whose acting ability was rivaled only by her size. Oprah went on to host her own television talk show, produce her own films, and even found her own production company. Still, her weight issues hounded her; in fact, some episodes of her talk show were devoted to discussing her weight loss regimen. Today, Oprah is healthier and leaner, and can wear slinky dresses with confidence. She uses the Jenny Craig program, which emphasizes a balance between a healthy diet and exercise. Oprah also has her own personal trainer, who coaches her in her workout, which includes jogging and a few hours on the treadmill. [image from theage]

Stress May Be What is Keeping You from Being Sexy
2007-06-02 01:51:00
Stress has been blamed for causing people to suffer from anxiety, heart attack, and a lot more physical, mental, and emotional problems, but could it also be the culprit behind weight loss difficulties? Stress is an upsetting and energy-depleting condition that you don’t want to be in anytime. If you’re worried about your weight, be aware that stress can prevent you from losing weight effectively in different ways. When you’re stressed, your body produces an excessive amount of cortisol and which would consequently slow down your metabolism. Because of this, your body maintains more fats than usual. When you’re stressed, you’re more prone to succumbing to eating for comfort. You ignore the dictates of common sense and healthy eating and simply gorge on whatever food you crave and could temporarily calm your nerves. When you’re stressed, you don’t want to be bothered with mere mundane tasks of cooking healthy food. You want to eat, and you want to eat now, and that’s wh

Popeyes Chicken and Biscuit Says Tata to Transfat
2007-05-30 08:59:42
CNN reported about Popeyes fast food resto announcing that it is now losing the transfat (food ingredient found in margarines, baked goods, and cookies that causes heart diseases) content of its biscuits. However, its french fries still have transfat but reduced to only one gram per serving. The restaurant said it began offering zero transfat biscuits and one gram trans fat fries in 2006 and has completed the project for the items to be in all restaurants. Popeyes, a unit of AFC Enterprises (up $0.41 to $19.20, Charts), said many of its core chicken items have zero grams of transfat, while other items on the menu contain 1.5 grams or less. The New Orleans-style restaurant also plans to review its Cajun and Creole flavor menu items and cooking procedures and said a zero transfat shortening is being tested.   Tags: transfat, Popeyes

Green Tea Diet Supplement and Weight Loss
2007-05-29 17:06:11
Green tea has long been associated with good health and if recent studies are accurate, it might also be good for weight loss as well. Consider for example a study involving 35 Japanese men who were divided into two groups. One group took a bottle green tea while the other took oolong tea. At the end of the three-month study, the men who took the extract containing green tea lost an average of 5.3 lbs. and also significantly decreased their BMI and waist size. It was also found that the level of LDL cholesterol decreased in this group. This is just one of a number of studies involving the benefits of green tea. Green tea is more known as a strong antioxidant but it is its polyphenol content that is getting it all the attention these days. Polypnenols seem to contribute to the decrease in leptins, a protein that is produced by fats. It also seems to activate a type of body fat that helps burn more calories, shedding fat located in the lower body, such as those found in the waist and hip

Lost Lots of Pounds? Know Why You Might Just Gain Back Pounds Again
2007-06-05 07:35:39
In a press release about studies about Americans weight loss patterns, Hispanic or Mexican-Americans were reported, (although not yet thoroughly confirmed) to be more prone to become obese than non-Hispanics. And just why is that? Putting pounds back on was more common in those who lost a greater percentage of weight. “One possible explanation is that those who lost larger percentages of their maximum weight may have had to make greater lifestyle changes that are difficult to incorporate and sustain,” the researchers suggest. Hispanics are not used to eating the foods offered in diet programs that’s why they easily go back to their eating habits that cause their weight problems. The solution to this cultural aspect that affects Hispanics’ weight management? Hispanic dieters are more successful with a culturally attuned program that allows for larger meals midday and incorporates familiar food, Schroeder said. He added, “What we’ve found is a high desire to lose weig

Consulting the Experts about the Ideal Weight Loss Program for You
2007-06-03 18:05:00
When you want to know if marrying Mr. or Ms. Right, you ask your mom because mothers know best. And if you want to know what the ideal weight loss program is for you, you go to your physician or dietician because they know best as well. Here are some questions you can ask the experts to help you make the ultimate decision: How can the program make you lose weight? Is it safe for someone in your age and health condition? How much pounds do you want to lose? How much pounds will you lose with the weight loss program? Some people merely need a weight loss program to serve as a quick fix while others want it to become their long-term solution. Does it require you to comply with any rules when it comes to how much of which kind of food you can eat? Some people simply can’t subsist on a purely organic meal while others have trouble eliminating sweets from their diet. What about exercise? Does the weight loss program specify any need for any kind of exercise? If so, how much are you willin
