Focus 4 The Future Seminar - UK

Last Friday I spent the day at the Focus 4 The Future Seminar in Birmingham.I listened to seminars by Robert Puddy, Martin Avis & David Watson. I also got to meet plenty of very pleasant and enthusiastic internet marketers including Martin Salter, Steve Ayling, Chris Davidson & Daniele Protti.The highlight, however, was undoubtedly, volunteering to sit in the hotseat and have my website publicly shredded by Robert Puddy, Martin Avis & John Taylor. My homepage has needed re-doing for ages and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get this quality of feedback :-)The criticism was blunt, but made an awful lot of sense.I've now got a good idea of how I want to redesign my homepage. I've settled on a JV Broker role and I have one individual (I will name him later on if he is willing) who is currently familiarising himself with the product. This is fairly easy to setup as the script was originally designed to offer two levels of commission. I removed the second level so as not to cause problems with PayPal and reverted to a standard affiliate program. However, I can still set a second level of commission on an individual basis, so it's easy to track my JV Broker's activity. My JV Broker will be provided with a special link to register JV partners for free and these will be recorded as his referrals, along with any subsequent sales. Virtually no response from my forum posts and mailing list request for a JV Broker / Affiliate Manager.I had a conversation with a UK company that specialises in affiliate management, but they were unwilling to take on what they see as a "business to business" product. Apparently they mainly do "business to consumer" affiliate programs.I'm also getting cold feet about the idea of handing over total control of one my products to someone I barely know so I'm not ready to go to Elance just yet.I've had one positive interest from someone interested in the role, so I'm going to look for a way to scale back the idea a little. In other words, making the role more JV Broker than Affiliate Manager.Once I've got things in motion, I'll post the specifics and, hopefully, some of the positive results.BIS provides background checks to global employers.

My set of 15 DVDs arrived last week and I've been cramming in as much time as possible to work my through the first three blue discs.These contain the fundamentals of search engine optimisation and are absolutely fascinating.The dynamic of Brad & Andy discussing with each other rather than talking to the viewer makes the videos really easy to watch and are akin to viewing an extensive documentary.Some of what I've learned is very new, some is familiar and some is absolutely mind-blowing.Also interesting is that many of the techniques that I've heard dismissed in articles over the last couple of years are still taught in this course. There are reasons given to explain why they may be less useful than in the past, but crucially they are still a valuable part of optimisation.The content exchange system has just started. I can't say much about it, but it looks extremely clever and I'm looking forward to seeing its effects.Also recently announced, is a nice example of over delivering.

A big thank you to wikipedia for sorting me out on this one.I've hired a web designer to build my new template for PayPerShop.com and I want to make heavy use of SSI (server side includes allow you to add the same content, menu, header, etc to multiple pages very easily - useful if you have a large site). My designer pointed out that it would need to be in shtml.I've seen shtml as a file extension before but never really considered what it meant.I did a quick Google on "ssi and shtml" and wikipedia explained that the file extension .shtml means that this page will recognise and execute server side includes. I don't want to use shtml because it would mean changing the file name on every page (8000+) - erk!Fortunately, Wikipedia also pointed out that a server can be configured to accepts SSI on pages with the .html extension.My host pointed me towards - http://www.buildwebsite4u.com/advanced/htaccess-file.shtmlThen it was just a case of downloading my htaccess file and adding the line

A friend of mine specialises in wrought ironwork (gates, railings, etc...) and is one of the few suppliers in Leeds , Yorkshire that actually has a website - Metallic CarpentryHe is interested in getting some better search engine rankings and I was happy to offer a few suggestions.One of the first things I recommended was to set a proper TITLE tag with a good description that includes the right keywords. In this case Gates in Leeds.The same can also be done with ALT tags in the images and links.I did a sample search on "gates in Leeds" to see who Metallic Carpentry would be competing with and there was really only one result on the first page that was offering a competing service.
