BACK TO THE ROOTS V.3!!!! 2006-09-03 18:49:50 This is the third installment of The Lab's Back to the Roots block party. After this show, I'm taking a break from all this performing stuff to record the Redstar album, write news and spread the word over the "airwaves" on hip-hop in China... Tell everyone, even your sister (especially your sister), about this show. It will be big and my UK brother from another mother DJ DSK will hit up the ones and twos. Don't sleep!
Qbert Post Event Wrap-up 2006-09-03 09:27:42 QBert - "A deadly DJ, who speaks with his hands"Last night, Bonbon was jam packed, wall-to-wall with people all waiting to see what the fuss was all about . Bonbon strategically set up tv projectors throughout the club so for EVERYONE, particularly those behind customers with big heads and tall bodies, could see the master at work. The evening began with a lot of pop/mainstream hip-hop and Andrew Ballen on stage. It was ok, but it seemed like the DJ just threw on whatever he wanted to throw on with no care for his audience. Maybe he ran out of music to play and just thought "through on anything full of energy, even crap, cause QBert's starting late." Andrew did his crowd-hyping thing, but, as an mc myself, I would like to see the brotha rhyme more, rather than call out the crowd. He did it once, let's hear it again. Show the skillz, man. I'm all about that. QBert took the stage, and the floor was totally packed. Lights were on, cameras were out and people were fee
QBert - the world's greatest turntablist... @ BonBon 2006-09-02 03:14:54 Tonight is DJ QBert. Will you be there? This will be pretty dope. Arguably the greatest turntablist ever. In my lifetime, in Shanghai, at BonBon. After a crazy hard week of work, should be worth it. I'll hit ya'll back with the outcome...
I been around the world and I-I-I.. I can't find my baby... 2006-08-31 18:28:55 create your own visited country mapActually, I found my baby in Nanjing. Sorry, I lied, but the song is dope! What's next? Phillipines? South Africa? Australia? Brazil? Taiwan?
Yet Another GigShanghai.com Rager 2006-08-31 16:53:59 Yesterday was GigLive at BonBon with GigShanghai.com This isn't one of your average Shanghai parties, but a chance to see some acts you've never seen before and these acts to get their name out therein the China scene. Check out the post here. Here's some pics from the show:FerriswheelBanana MonkeyAlso, I saw Goldie: aka the Godfather of Drum 'n Bass at Bon Bon (I've been seeing too much BonBon) and basically he killed it. As you already know, I am no drum and bass fan, but he did a good job moving the crowd, i walked in and my body was already mezmerized. Nuff respect to my co-worker/Miami Vice Partner Eric A. for inviting me out. Check these pics below:Tomorrow is Friday. TGIF all the way. Five years ago, when I began studying Chinese, I never though life would be like this. An actual resident of Shanghai, China. Working 9-7, hanging out with decent people and still keeping up my Chinese... (However my English is hurting a bit.)But not everything is all fun and games out here. th
NYC Deli 2006-08-29 14:21:20 I'm sorry for biting your style, Mike and SmartShanghai.com, but I had to put this up...NYC Deli is the illest sandwich shop in Shanghai and probably all of China right now. I love it. You can call and get what you want in English or in 国语 and get a dope sandwich just like momma used to make. I order from them so much that when i call them from work, they are like "You're Morgan, right?" Yeah... it's that bad.Roast beef is my ish right now and you can get it hot, with swiss and cole slaw. Back up KFC (肯德基,Ken De Ji).I don't know the guy running the show, but all i got to say is, if you find my site online about your shop, know that I am giving you props because you are running a great, honest and legitamate business. Is expansion in your plans? The people want to know!!! Holla!
Jolin is hotness 2006-08-28 20:30:04 So this lady is the next pop icon in China. JOLIN... i think she is hot... i think her ribbion rhythymic gymnastic dance is a bit over my head, but she's doing her thing, got some of the dope melodies and works it better than most of the 超级女声ever could. This is too hot for Channel V.
Young Hov in Shanghai, it's so necessary. 2006-08-28 06:29:09 Yes, Jay-Z is coming to Shanghai
!!!Actually... I've been aware of this for the last two months now. The Lab tried to hook it up, but some other crew got it. We thought Emma made the win, but it was actually a group called "KS." Does anyone know this group? Somebody help me out here. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but KS only scored this gig for about 2-3 weeks now. I am a bit worried that there won't be much time to prep for the Jiggaman. Lisences, A/V prep, advertising and PR (And doing it properly!! Gotta make Jigga look good. He's a BUSINESS, man, not a businessmaaaaaan!)...Then again, how much do these folks know about hip-hop and Jay-Z's history. Jay-Z has done more than most artists in ANY genre of music. (From Marcy to Madison Sq... He's sold out tickets like crazy.) I am a bit worried as to how he will be recieved in China and that will rely on the promoters. And China concert quality... for Jay-Z... his explicit lyrics... This will cost a lot of money, not just m
Fred, you will be missed. 2006-08-27 17:48:01 Fred's back to the states, starting a new. I almost choked up when we said our goodbyes. He's got a new, beautiful wife and a great road to cross, as we all do. This happens so much in China for everyone. You meet someone from a foreign land, get some good contact, and then they are gone. it's normal. In Shanghai, you meet folks all the time - visitors, people in for the long run - all kinds of people pass through the Middle Kingdom. Some are here strictly for business and some are just trying to find themselves in this crazy, developing country. Most of the time, your relationships are limited to what one can do for you or vice-versa and not much else. Then you got people who've seen you grow and change, seen your worst and your best and have stuck by you through thick and thin. And then... They out...I'm having a hard time telling myself that he's not a 15 minute walk anymore...Fred, I sincerely wish you all the best back home. I know a lot of folks and I got some great friends
Spoof on Chinese Pop Videos, REALLY FUNNY! 2006-08-26 12:08:36 So the actually pop singer for this song is everywhere in China. I kind of get tired of her. She is so cute, that she is too cute. Anyone know this singer's real name??? I know she's from Taiwan and she has a lot of bubble gum pop hits.Anyway, here's a REALLY
funny spoof I found online. if you want to know what Mando-pop videos look like and how ridiculously cheezy they are! Read more:Chinese
What's happenin', Shanghai? 2006-08-24 17:53:56 Is it just me, or is Shanghai
kinda dead this week?Maybe its the sudden rush of heat after a nice few days of coolness...Maybe its a quiet before the storm... While Jin says "Learn Chinese", Lebron Adds "Just Do It." 2006-08-23 17:00:56 For real, even Lebron
is doing it... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!----------According to the paper, James wants to greatly increase his exposure in Asia by the Beijing Olympics in 2008. That is why it was never in doubt whether or not he would play for Team USA at the world championships. In addition, the Cavaliers are talking to the NBA about opening their season in China next year."It is only going to help my business,'' James said. "Once I knew the world games were going to be in Japan, I knew I was going to be on board.''James is so serious, he is taking Mandarin lessons with the hope of being able to speak it in interviews by 2008. Finally gettng internet at home... 2006-08-16 04:35:22 No more 网吧, no more sneaking in a post or two at the office...It's coming...China Telecom is the only way anyone can get internet at China. You can choose your speed of 2G, 1G, and 512kb per minute. My building kind of sucks as far as cable wiring is concerned, so I'll be stuck with the 512kb speed. And they take FOREVER to finally choose a date to set up internet in your home. But my CPU is, well, it's pretty hot and with the internet, it will all be worth it. More on that later, wwhen I'm online at the crib! Read more:Finally

Saving stray cats on Nanjing Xi Lu 2007-05-24 03:37:31 Poor Cat...Once upon a time... (Yesterday, actually.)I just got home from work, I'm kind of tired, my Ayi is home cleaning up the house and I'm ready to celebrate my day with a nice tall bottle of Tsingtao for my hard work. Suddenly, I get a call:"Morgan, I need your help."It's the doctor that saved my cat's life, Dr. Zhang."There's two ladies at the store that found a stray cat. We're super busy at the store. The guys downstairs can't help me. Can you grab her for me and bring it back?So I think about it for a sec... "Well, this guy did save my cat's life. He woke up early and stayed up late to remind me to give the cat med, gave me a pretty big discount for Muffin's treatment and I know how busy he gets this time of the year. The warmer it gets the more diseases with the animals..."OK...", I half-heartedly say and run downstairs to the petshop, get an apron so I can grab the feline and a cage to hold her in and me and the two ladies dash off to Read more:Saving

Looking for slick, snazzy business space in Shanghai? Check out Redtown. 2007-05-22 22:06:52 Redtown: Artsy, stylish and new for Shanghai
.So I work in this new complex in Shanghai called "Redtown". It's pretty nice and large, tons of bricks and stuff like there. It's a lot like Xintiandi nightlife and Moganshanlu art mixed together. Soulfire's office is here and there several other clubs and museums near by. The whole section is new and there's still some construction going on so tons of dust and stuff like that... But give it another year and it's going to look like a billion bucks. Lots of cool structures within the complex, a few trees here and there and a great grassy space (see above). I really like the red brick buildings. It's funky. For all you folks looking to get premiun land in Shanghai for your business Redtown is the place, but I can bet you it will cost a pretty penny. On top of that, we got some big gov't buildings near by. This place IS important. Read more:Check
Pudong Airport vs. Hongqiao Airport 2007-05-27 03:25:42 Thought about this on my flight back from Zhengzhou and planning for my trip to Korea this week. Jia You, STO!!!The JFK and Laguardia of Shanghai. Fellow travellers, you make the call! Which is better: Pudong Airport or Hongqiao Airport?Pudong Airport1. The inside of this airport is huge as heck. It has tons of space.2. There are very few shops and restaurants before you enter customs.3. It is FAR from the center of Shanghai. (But you can try out that maglev!)4. It architecturally appealing to the eye.5. Got all the international flights you need for China and a few domestic flights.Hongqiao Airport1. Inside is quite crowded!2. Got all the shops and restaurants you need before customs. Including your fast food favorites (McDonald's, KFC, etc...)3. The taxi line is so long, I heard it can be seen by outer space satellites. (I don't believe it, but it is that long.)4. Very central compared to Pudong Airport. (getting there is 3-4 times cheaper than Pudong Airport, regardless of taxi or
R-16 Korea... Sparkling 2007-06-01 21:20:56 Yes, I am in Seoul and I am in the Ramada. Mom, I made it.So this competition is called the R-16. R is for Respect and 16 is for the 16 countries that participate. One of those countries is China and the representing team is STO, Mainland China's best crew, pound for pound. As for the "Sparkling" part of the name... I didn't make that up. Sounds like toothpaste to me. =)Yesterday was the performance competition and today is the battle competition. I can't wait to see what happens. This event has caught some media attention. Check it out. Read more:Korea

Back in China: Vivid Sparkling Memories with STO 2007-06-10 01:30:06 STO (China
) vs Rivers (Korea)R 16 was the pretty fun. It's a cool, positive and international event that all peeps around the would should check out. Above is STO (the crew I managed and translated for in Korea) versus Rivers Crew from Korea. Let me say, Rivers is a pretty dope crew (Dude, they're freaking sponsored by Pepsi!), but STO stuck it out the whole time. This was STO's first time ever battling in an international event (won't be the last) and I had to say a lot of good words to the fellas before they went out for battle, and they came through with all their heart.China, with all the economic development going on, China's hitting the social/artistic/sporting scene hard core as well, and this video is nothing but proof positive. But We'll need more time, more experience and more int'l exposure. My bet is that there will be an int'l comepetition happening on the mainland (I'll probably help set it up or host it! haha!) and when that happens, China will come up on top ha

Shanghaineese, Expats and My Take 2007-06-15 00:07:02 MC PQ - Shanghaineese Rapper, Int'l Hip-Hop StyleAn important question from Jordan posted to me from my Soulfire Love post:I am a French blogger based in Shanghai. I saw you singing at 4 live along with Gary Wang on the turntables and than i read something very intelligent from you on a Entertainment local mag about hip-hop in Shanghai (you were saying that most of the hip-hop parties looked like mainstream mtv parties or something like this). I admire your dynamism and your love of chinese culture. You bring your culture (american music) and enjoy chinese artists too. I like surfing on western blogs about Shanghai but most of the time i am pretty disappointed. It gives me the bitter impression that we, expats, are only enjoying Shanghai for its western clubs, all you can drink parties and english speaking concerts. Apart from Shanghaiist, there is almost nothing on censorship and no critical posts of the chinese govt. So are Shanghainese young wealthy people on MySpace who speak so w
Shanghai weather is getting hot and humid!! 2007-06-25 23:39:53 This is why I sweat everyday...So it's getting really hot and humid out here, so all travellers to Shanghai
... actually, all travellers to China, get ready for the summer heat. Now, I'm a New Yorker, through and through, I've been through all the 100+ degree summers and all, and recently I spent a good two weeks in Thailand with my wife Zoe just before Monsoon season (know as one of the hottest periods in Thailand...) and nothing beats a Shanghai afternoon in the middle of June (Well... maybe Nanjing...).Anybody with any thoughts on how to keep cool when your sweat sticks to your skin like white on rice??? All ideas are valuable! Read more:weather
