Read My Lips II 2007-06-29 08:56:00 This is my second Read My Lips cross stitch (the first is here), it's taken me all the spare time between helping my mum this week.In other words it's kept me busy when I would otherwise be bored. I don't think I have ever worn my glasses for such long periods whilst indoors.News on my mum is she has a slight infection, I've continued to do her dressings in the absence of the District Nurse who had discharged her, the hospital have put her on antibiotics.Mum had 3 nodes out of 24 that were removed that showed changes, whilst 4 nodes is the danger limit they are still going to treat her with both chemo and radio therapy as her cancer was grade 3 ... If anyone else is wondering quite what all that means join the club, they didn't seem to want to tell me which way the grades went and which was the worst, deduction points to a grade 3 being pretty bad.As for myself, they say mum is over 50 and they doubt therefore that it's genetic also that a family history needs to be done, they ex

Skin carving or scarification 2007-07-01 11:36:00 My friend who loves gore and the unusual as much as I do sent me an email about skin carving or scarification so I thought I'd look into it in more depth and blog about it. The following post does show some explicit photographs and if you are of a weak disposition you are advised not to click the 'read more' link below and if you do not to scroll down the page too far as the images are at the end of the post.Skin carving or scarification was common in the Maori men of New Zealand who etched deep tattoos over their entire faces. Patterns were chiselled into the skin to create parallel ridges and grooves, much like designs cut into wood. They did this to make themselves look fierce in battle and attractive to women. Since no two patterns were alike, the raised facial tattoos also marked identity. The process of scarification involves an endurance of pain. This endurance often signifies a rite of passage and is a ritual which is itself highly significant. It occurs in many tribal groups
Contact Form 2007-07-08 19:15:00 Due to heavy spamming of my blog email account I have now added a contact form and removed my email address from my profile. You can find the link in the navtabs at the top of the page under 'contact me', at present it is a little off with the blog as I still need to work on it. Having said that it does work. For anyone interested I am hosting it on another domain as it's the only free contact box I could find (in a short space of time) that had an anti-spam feature, yep you guessed it, it has verification and you need to do some maths. It's by Stuart Cochrane at www.freecontactform.com, it's very simple to set up and as I said it's free. The down side is you need your own domain to host it as you can not post it into your blog as you can with others.

Blogger Scribe Background 2007-07-15 04:43:00 I've had some search hits about changing the backgrounds for the Scribe
template and looking myself I never explain how you actually do it, so here's the magic formula for those who need a little help.Obviously start by finding the background(s) you want instead, you will need to find somewhere to host the image yourself online, you risk having a warning appear in place of your image if you just hotlink from somewhere or having no background image appear at all, then just follow the instructions. To change the original brown patterned background:1. Open Template and Edit HTML2. Find the following section of HTML template/* Defaults----------------------------------------------- */body {margin:0;padding:0;font-size: small;text-align:center;color:#29303b;line-height:1.3em;background:#483521 url("http://www.blogblog.com/scribe/bg.gif") repeat;}3. Edit the background url highlighted in red above to the image url want to use.4. Preview your template to ensure everything looks right and the Read more:Blogger
Wordless Wednesday 2007-07-17 18:00:00 The Dreaming Tree by FoxfiresThis image really needs to be enlarged to view the detail.Click image to enlageComment from the artist FoxfiresThe Dreaming Tree is an idea I've had for awhile now. Along the lines of a visual story, which is to be read from the bottom to the top. I hope each viewer can see their own unique tale as they look at this....and better yet, I hope there is a different story to be told, depending on mood. This was a real massive challenge!!The actual 300dpi verison of this is 9"x56"!!! That's almost 4 1/2 feet tall. LOL Oi...my poor, poor computer. Read more:Wednesday
Vulnerable in the blogosphere 2007-07-17 12:52:00 Most people in the blogosphere have heard about the harassment of a single blogger who was pushed so far that she posted the death threats she was receiving in her blog (she has since removed the posts and wishes to continue her life, so I'll not post a link to her here).Last night to nowhere near the extent that she went through I also had a dose of brief cyber attacks although I am sure they will be back and read this post at some point I decided to post it anyway, simply because I needed to say something about how such a small incident has made me feel. All that ended up happening was a message was posted in my guest book, strangely that was not even to me but to my boyfriend, it was easily deleted and I turned on comments moderation for both my guest book and my comments. The next wasn't so nice and contained a low level racial slur as well as a good amount of insulting comments directed at me on my Flickr account. That was easily remedied by blocking their account. So now you are m Read more:Vulnerable
Mental Health; Smoke Free or Not ??? 2007-07-16 14:14:00 Since we were first informed about Britain going smoke free we have wondered what will happen with our patients.I work in a medium secure hospital, each door has a lock and our patients live under strict restrictions governed by not only the mental health act but in some cases by the Ministry of Justice (the home office) as well. Most if not all of our patients are there long term, I'm not talking about more than just six months, I'm talking longer than a year and normally longer. The locks and imposed restrictions mean that our patients at times get a minimum of 15 minutes of fresh air out in the court yard a day. At times they only get that because it's law, the ward can be so busy and short staffed that finding an appropriate moment to take them out can be hard. This post has been prompted by reading an old article in the British Medical Journal* written in 2006 that states:Exemption from the Health
Act will exclude mental health patients from mainstream health improvement strateg Read more:Smoke

Personalised Blog Title 2007-07-25 12:57:00 I've been asked how to change the title header, while I know this is explained on other blogs I thought seeing as I had been asked I'd post the answer here myself. The following explains how to add an image in place of the header and stop the automatic blogger text from appearing. It will also allow guests to click on the image to take them to the home page of your blog.If you are adding your own header I suggest you make it before you begin editing the HTML. The ideal width you're looking at is 600px wide on the original scribe background, you will need to upload your image to an online host somewhere.1. Open Template and Edit HTML2. Find the following section of HTML template <b:section maxwidgets="1" showaddelement="no">This is the line of HTML that denotes the header area of your blog. Below this line is the widget text for the original blogger header.3. Delete this line <b:widget locked='true' title='YOUR BLOG TITLE (Header)' type='Header'/>4. Save your templ Read more:Title

HunterClick image to enlargeSailor ready to spike the cannons, Whitehaven Harbour, Cumbria, UKWhitehaven has had guns for some 400 years defending the port and its once vital shipping trade. Many of the guns had started life on board the town's sailing ships; carried on board to protect the shipping from pirates and privateers that operated even in the Irish Sea.The town's defences were started in 1639 when Sir Christopher Lowther was woken by news of invading Scots at Carlisle. He gave two pieces of ordnance and had the first battery platform built at Old Quay. This was replaced in 1741 by a new stone Fort.Local historian Ralph Lewthwaite said: "Today, almost every trace of our former defences have gone. Names like, Half Moon Battery, Jack-a Dandy Battery and the Sea Brows and Bransty batteries are confined to the pages of history and the only building from this story still to be seen, although considerably reduced in size and shape, is the fort."The only u Read more:Saturday

Topsy-Turvy Life 2007-10-14 15:39:00 I've had a life changing few months, busy months at that. Those who have been here before may know that along with my long term partner I was planning on buying and moving up North to Cumbria. For me that meant not only owning my own house but the possibility of starting a family seeing as we were moving out of the city and the house we had chosen was large enough. The end of July came and the day for me to move out of my rented house and into my partners flat and shortly after, the deeds arrived for the house, there were issues we had with different items in the deed and he wanted to go back to college and I had opportunities coming up here. Together we decided to call the move off. In reality we both had our reservations about moving and we both got cold feet.I was then told I had to move out of the flat because we couldn't both live there together. This for me was the final insult. I began to look and as time went on our relationship fell apart more and more. I struggled with feelin

A difference of views 2007-10-16 04:32:00 Prolicide the killing of offspring and infanticide the killing of an infant from birth to 12 months; the killing of ones own child is something that most people can’t get their head around. In staff group sessions my co-workers have often said how upset they get about this issue if we have a patient who has committed such a crime, for myself I appear not to be effected by their crime to such degrees. Maybe it’s because I don’t have my own child to sit and look at and wonder how a mother could harm her own. There have been two cases that I have had contact with that has really touched me; both mothers have attempted to kill themselves after the event yet both cases were so different. One was a case of post natal depression the other a case of mental illness. After the post natal depression case I looked it up, it seemed almost unfair that the mother was going to have to pay for her period of instability not only with living for the rest of her life with what she had done and the lose Read more:difference

Personal revelations 2007-10-20 20:04:00 I realised yesterday that for so long I had been missing simple things like kissing, proper full on passionate kissing and being able to simply caress another person. I was recently told that I don't express my feelings. It's true I don't communicate my feelings that well verbally but as soon as I can touch and caress my feelings seem very much understood and I find it easier to verbalise them as well. Yeah okay that's not good on any level but an intimate level but it was from an intimate view point the criticism came.Saturday morning I almost fainted in fact I did faint and it was only for the fact that someone was right behind me and able to lower me into a chair that I did not hit the floor. This is the first time I've ever fainted and sadly only reinforced to the other person there that I was not eating enough. Having never fainted before I found myself wanting to just let go and then as I did there was this voice in my ear calling my name in rather a panicked tone and then ju Read more:Personal
Retail therapy and a new party frock 2007-10-23 18:12:00 Over the past few weeks I seem to have gone on a spending frenzy , apart from needing to replace items that were lost or broken I've been buying things I wanted rather than needed, I have a new watch and a 4GB pen drive now as well as other items. In a weeks time I will be going to a work mates leaving party, seeing as this is the first time I will be going out without having to worry about what time I get in or how my partner will react if I'm late I decided I needed a new party frock (to go with my many others hanging in the wardrobe). The photo you see to the right is my new party frock and I just wanted to show it off to everyone who won't have the pleasure of seeing me on the night.I've already had amazing feed back from the girls and the only guy who has seen it kept very quiet with just a small flicker of a grin which he may be able to keep from his mouth but always reaches his eyes. This is the most frivolous purchase I have made in a long time, egged on by a friend saying if Read more:Retail
