One More Round … 2007-07-02 17:27:48 Today we had our local artists group and I printed out and showed them the business cards … I have them pretty much ready for printing … the files set up correctly and all. But 3 different people don’t like the Buddha/Quan Yin image in the business card. So it wasn’t that they don’t like the image.

Two of them absolutely love the “In the Garden” Quan Yin image. For the local little show we put together today they gave it the spot as you walk into the room. But they wanted things such as … throw out all the words on the back (like the contact info and such) and put the whole back as the image. Obviously that is not going to happen.
Art Biz Card Cat, Digital © Diane Clancy
People like the idea of the image of the cat there because they say the colors work better. Now I now I have to be the one most happy with this and I will follow my heart, but I am asking for one more round of input Streams of Water Flowing 2007-07-01 16:07:00 Holding stable, holding things in - as opposed to yesterday’s going outward. Can this be a Circus? 2007-07-07 15:22:54 Now can this be a circus? Is this fun? I love the swirls and circles … the way the colors - especially the yellows and blues - play off each other keeps my attention. And those different shades of blue swirls engage me.

Sue, I tried to not make any eyes that might feel scary … but only you know for sure whether I was successful. What do you (everyone) think … feel?

Entering Within 2007-07-06 18:36:36 I had posted another image earlier and asked, “Can this be a circus then?” But I decided that that image disturbed me - and I don’t like to be disturbed - enough of that to go around already! Is this friendly, now? I really like this … entering into something deep or a third eye … I like this a lot!
Beyond IV, Digital © Diane Clancy
Trust me … I am going somewhere with all this … the business cards have gotten in the middle of this project. If you look at the categories this is posted in, you will find a hint.
Do you have any thoughts or feelings about this?

~ Diane Clancy Around and Around …. 2007-07-04 10:47:15 Lucky I didn’t promise to not ask again. I had a long talk this morning with my friend JC who shared with me his own journey in relating to my business card. He shared why he changed his opinion on using “In the Garden” as the third image. So he encouraged me to go try out some other images … and we discussed which ones might work best.
Art Biz Card - Inner Flow © Diane Clancy
So you can blame him or give him credit … I choose the credit route … for yet another round. I then got what people were saying about the image (In the Garden) not going with the other images. It helped me that he hadn’t seen the lack of working together either until others pointed it out.
Art Biz Card - Inside and Out © Diane Clancy
He also suggested that I was actually using the context of the larger size of “In the Garden” when I was looking at the business card. I wasn’t seeing what is actually there, but furnishing details from my brain. Girl with a Pearl Earring 2007-07-11 18:29:54 Thank you for all your good wishes on the business card post! Also, I forgot to tell you yesterday that Susan Elkin has posted her finalized business card too. The people who have been coming to these blogs have been an incredible help ~ people are really feeling like community!

To me, this looks like the movie, “The Girl with the Pearl
Earring
.” There is something about the colors of this - especially the yellow and blue that reminds me of that era.
This looks more like a design, like Beyond I and Beyond II, whereas many of these other digital paintings look more like an image, as if they are telling a story. Tomorrow you are going to see Beyond IX and the next day I will share how I made these images.
Do you have any thoughts or feelings? Please share them.

Whoops ~ I am prepping the cards for printing and decided the other version needing tweaking … so here it is …
Art Biz Card Changed, Digital © D The Envelope Please 2007-07-10 17:10:15 Here are the results that you have been holding your breath for … Given that I was having such a hard time choosing between the two top ones, I decided to print both versions of the business card. I think it will be good money spent for advertising.

I love them each in a different way. I really like the elegance of the second one - I think it is very unusual. And I think Lisa and Sue and others had a good point about using the one branding image as large as possible.

Constraining Variables 2007-07-09 20:36:18 Talk about town … these figures are very busy chatting up a storm … I wonder what the topic is … They almost look as if they are gathering at the village well - where all the important news gets shared. Or is this a vertical painting - a portal with figures guarding the doorway, perched on the top?
Beyond VII, Digital © Diane Clancy
I think it fun to see all the different ways to put together the same design elements. In creativity I often find it useful to constrain the variables so I am forced to be creative within limits rather than in total freedom.
Tomorrow I will share the chosen business cards ~ I haven’t had time to prepare the files to upload for the blog yet.
Do you have any thoughts or feelings to share?

Soft Eyes for 3D Painting 2007-07-14 19:11:11 This acrylic painting is the companion piece to “Fire and Air” in yesterday’s post. I have a friend who, when he was 10, used to always say, “This painting is 3D.” At that time those “Magic Eye” or 3D images were very popular. You relax your eyes and look that picture and a 3D vision pops right out at you.
Water and Earth, Acrylic © Diane Clancy
Sometimes (often?) children can see what we can’t see … I always wondered … because each time he insisted it was 3D! But I was never quite sure what he saw - I think it was just the image itself for him was 3D.
Looking at it online, of course, is not like looking at the original … but sometimes I almost see what he means … even looking at this online version. As I go and check how this post looks as I am writing it, again I am struck by the 3D quality. For me, it has something to do with the light (I think) in the middle of the painting. The more I look at it, the Read more: Painting
The Secret Revealed 2007-07-13 17:11:00 Ta da! This is the original acrylic painting that was used as a source image in Studio Artist for all those “Beyond” digital images. I’ll bet that if you look at the Beyonds, you will recognize some of the design elements from this acrylic painting.
Fire and Air, Acrylic © Diane Clancy
In Studio Artist you start with a source image. You can start with a canvas that is white, black, any other color, texture or an image (among other things.) Then there are really cool tools with which you can manipulate the canvas. One of the main ones I used in this creative process was an “interactive warp” of the type “translate.”
I will do a post soon with some pictures of the process I am going through as I do this. I move the canvas around, grab it again and move it again … and again. Each time I move the canvas again, I have different choices to work from. Each “translation” is a decision which opens up and also limits the choic Beginning to Reveal … 2007-07-12 17:29:56 The colors of this digital painting look like Beyond I and Beyond II to me. But the structure of the painting reminds me of Beyond IV, which Sue called a portal. Or perhaps a double portal. I guess it looks a little like Beyond VI also. I think most of paintings deserve better names … and they will get them. Some of them anyway.

Have you noticed that these digital images are listed in both the acrylic and digital sections of “Diane’s Sketch Book”? hmmm … there might be a reason for that. I don’t remember seeing that ever before we got to this Beyond series. hmmm … Studio Artist is also a category this is listed in … I see the wheels spinning in your minds already!

The Mothership is Tilting 2007-07-17 15:34:06 Whoa … the mother starship is tilting and it feels out of control … this isn’t my usual type of image, but I was playing around and trying to see what I could do differently. Is that a Christmas tree or an alien? Maybe that is an alien cat at the controls … the one with the long blue whiskers. But I do see the controls in there. And is that another kind of alien or just random pieces of the universe floating through? I hope you are enjoying this game ~ I am.

What was it Sue O’Kieffe said? Something about all painters eventually have figures in their paintings if they work from the unconscious? I think this might qualify.
And Neda wanted me to work in an unsymmetrical way - I think that works too. Any thoughts?

Wow! What fantastic comments everyone has made! They all came to my email box today and it was better than Christmas!! I agree these images need names and not numbers. Rima’s Challenge 2007-07-21 18:52:01 First off, am I to assume the thumbnails work for the Studio Artist demo?
Rima Koleilat of MaraZine blog (marayagalleries.blogspot.com) has issued a digital challenge in this post here. Rima is asking anyone interested to download the same digital image and make an painting with it. You can download it from this post, here on my blog … then the thumbnail will expand and you can download the file. There are a few simple rules you can read in Rima’s post - and a deadline!! I am joining in with the fun and I hope you will too. Anyone may play!

Rima adds about this challenge “It would be nice to have more people try their hand at interpreting the same picture, with varying degrees of know-how. I think for a lot of our readers and fellow bloggers, it would be a little push in a different direction - always good for creativity muscles. ” Sue, I can’t wait to see the mandala you make - though you can make another picture Read more: Challenge
Are Thumbnails going to work? 2007-07-20 15:49:07 What do you think of this? Also, below, I have put one thumbnail to test if this is going to work for the Studio Artist demo I have prepared. Is this big enough? I randomly gave you “Step 6″ as a preview.

Group of Franklin County as we prepare for our next AWE - Artists Window

. My window has been taken down since that business wanted only a short exhibit. Hopefully, Susan will find some more windows so I can get my work up too.
The talk around town is that even this couple of weeks with the work of some artists in a handful of store windows has picked up the mood of the town. There is a lot of evidence that building the creative economy helps build the whole economy.

demo that some of you have been asking me to create. This is a 22 step creation of a digital painting in Studio Artist to show you a demonstration of how to use this innovative art program. I have decided to use the same size images I usually use. I want to give you a better flow than I think you will get from going back and forth between thumbnails and enlargements. But for the workspace and the final image I am providing the thumbnails so you can look at the enlargement if you want. Of course any of the other enlargements are available on request.
This is what the workspace looks like. Here is a screen shot of the program after I have already done some steps so you can see which part of the workspace is the source image and which is the canvas. Studio Artist always has a source image, but there are many ways to use this source image including use of the colors, the image to manipulate and not at all.

As part of the AWE (Artists Window Exhibit), we had the opportunity to put more artwork in the downtown windows. One artist fell through and there was a half hour (time) window - so we jumped up and put up 10 pieces between the 2 of us. We had taken down one show this morning and carried it to the third floor, basically turned around (after a phone call), and carried it back out to set it (and some other pieces) back up in a new place.

Switching my Source Image 2007-07-29 20:36:24 I have been having so much fun playing with Studio Artist! But I decided I.better use a different base image to keep you interested. This is from the “Water and Earth” shown in this post here. These colors still aren’t my usual colors I tend to paint in (but they are somewhat closer than the colors I have been using) … but I think it is good I am stretching myself. Also you have all been part of my making more complex digital paintings and I think that is a really good thing. It also feels great to be thinking of names each time I create a painting rather than a daunting task of coming up with lots of names at once.

Joining Social Networks 2007-07-28 19:35:45 Yesterday I started a shop at Imagekind …. my shop is DianeClancysArt. There is always so much work to set up something like this. It looks like a good shop (Imagekind) … it is new and it is very reasonably priced. They do matting and framing besides printing prints if someone wants. It is easy enough to start a shop and you can have a basic gallery for free (unless you make less than $5 a year and then they charge you that … something like that).
