Hadouk Trio
2006-10-22 23:48:18
Tagged :ethnic, folk, jazz, trio, warmIf everything’s gone right, you’ll be seeing this post and we’re hopefully in Prague. Hadouk Trio is the brain child of Didier Malherbe and Loy Ehrlich with percussionist Steve Shehan. All three are multi instrumentalists, and the music sounds very rich and the instruments are warm, especially the Dodouk (from which the second part of the word Hadouk comes from) is ultra warm, the percussionist Shehan plays with other artists like Dylan and Paul Simon, and his percussion is never in front but his touches add so much to the music and the bass like instrument Hajouj is played by Ehrlich masterfully. If you like the European ethnic-jazz sound, a la Romano/Sclavis/Texier or enjoyed the clarinet sound on the Klezmeyers, you’re in for a adventurous mixture of both sounds. Also don’t forget to catch the Hadouk Trio with Daevid Allen’s legendary band Gong, (whose New York Gong album has been featured here previously)

Belbury Poly
2006-10-21 11:19:22
Tagged :avantgarde, bizarre, electronica, synthTeam Undomondo is leaving for Prague today, so expect less posts till Wednesday, I’m trying to queue up 1-2 posts before I leave, but it seems I don’t have enough time to do it, we’ll see! Let’s start with the amazing Belbury Poly aka Jim Jupp from Ghost Box. Jim is the founder of the label with Julian House aka The Focus Group, which I thought I had featured previously but seems I haven’t. The music of Belbury Poly is, very pastoral and naive; like a stroll through rural UK in winter. The label says “Imagine soundtracks to televised versions of Arthur Machen tales, beautifully filmed in grainy day for night lighting, yet too disturbing and explicit ever to be broadcast.” How come I never come up with descriptions like this!. I especially fell in love with “Tangled Beams” which feels like it has escaped from Pirates! or a medieval/renaissance computer game, Everything feels old, ol

Akron / Family's new one
2006-10-19 10:33:14
Tagged :folk, indie, lo fi, rock Young Gods‘ Akron/Family has a new album called “Meek Warrior” out now. I was gonna continue posting some more electronic stuff, but as soon as I heard this track “Gone Beyond”, I changed my mind. I thoroughly enjoyed their self titled debut as well and their bittersweet sound and unconvential song making skills have already earned them a spot in my heart, but I didn’t really know what to expect from their new album. Well things haven’t changed much for them, maybe the songs have gotten a bit simpler without losing anything from their power and the album is obviously shorter with just 7 tracks. However it is said that if you truly believe in your tracks, it’s better to avoid adding fillers. (Remember Slayer’s Reign in Blood?). For example it only took a minute for me to love this simple song called “Gone Beyond“. Nothing more than an accoustic guitar, a touching chorus and some percussi

Planningtorock
2006-10-18 00:19:02
Tagged :berlin, bizarre, creative, electro, electronica, opera Janine Rostron aka Berlin’s Planningtorock is a wacko. Obsessed with reflections in her videos, she’s being dubbed the artsy Janis Joplin, but she sounds more like the little child of Matthew Herbert and Kevy B. She’s one hell of a creative lady with a new album on Chicks on Speed Records under her belt and she’s never afraid to take the songs on this album to new wacky heights. “Have it all” is very hard to categorize, electropopish songs with a DIY approach, absurd lyrics, sometimes Detroit Techno-ish strings, and a general baroque opera feeling like I got from the this years Final Fantasy album, no song sounds like another on this album and Ms. Rostron is no doubt a most original songwriter. Buy the album from Planningtorock on Myspace Video to Have it all on youtube Planningtorock - Bolton Wanderer Planningtorock - Hiding where I’ll find me

Exchpoptrue
2006-10-16 22:02:50
Tagged :electro, electroclash, french, italo, pop, synth I had lost interest in the electroclash and electropop genre, right after the start of the glam and the glitz. However thanks to Exchpoptrue on Popcorn Lab, I’m now back into roboglam and I’m feeling younger now. The band feels very dynamic thanks to gritty italo disco basslines by Christian Bouyjou and what’s better than having a witty grrrl vocalist? Having two of course! Chloé Fabre and Radha Valli share the vocal duty with funny and sometimes downright absurd lyrics. With three chord pop structures, cheap synths, funny melodies and dancable music, the songs are sure to be goddamn addictive. Try “Ugly Pop” and see if you can get that little melody out of your head. The band has played at Paris’ Batofar and Pulp and their live shows include some kind of cabaret choreography with all kinds of accessories like masks and gogo-dancers. Paypal the album directly from the band’s webpage Vi

Luomo - Paper Tigers
2006-10-13 12:02:30
Tagged :dubby, electronica, finland, house Luomo’s long awaited third album is finally upon us on his own label Huume. His “Vocalcity” album and the unforgettable hit “Tessio” had established his status as an innovator in the house field, while he has also worked under countless aliases like Sistol, Uusitalo, Vladislav Delay and one half of AGF/Delay producing dub oriented electronica and experimental music. Paper Tigers is the continuation of his experimentations in the sonic field, redefining the 4/4 house concept, and this is a successful album in that aspect, because he has set his trademark in the broken vocals and cold, dubby sound with huge bass and randomized beats. But, after listening to the album for a few times, I kinda think that he has not done much more than taking the poppified sound of Luomo and mixing it with Uusitalo. Yes, this is complex music, layer upon layers of clicks and changes, but after all, its constant change and chaos can be

Avishai Cohen - Continuo
2006-10-11 17:27:33
Tagged :double bass, jazz, jewish, middle east, oud, piano I had thought of following up Esbjoern Svensson Trio with Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen ’s astounding album “Continuo” on Razdaz Records, but as you see a few posts got in the way. Avishai’s music feels familiar to me because he’s from Israel, that means he’s from the Middle East if you’re not skilled in geography and this album has many Middle Eastern tones going underneath his western jazz sound. I somehow think those Middle Eastern scales and melodies give the music its unique taste, however Mr. Cohen is also well-known as a sideman for the legendary Chick Corea. The funny thing is the similarities in the general feeling of the music between E.S.T and Avishai Cohen is not only realized by me, but Guardian’s review has said that “The set has some parallels with the Esbjorn Svensson Trio in its use of catchy repeating hooks as anchors to the improvising.” And what ho

I’ll be publishing a weekly reblog post featuring the best stuff I found on blogs that week, although if you don’t wanna wait for the weekly update, you can subscribe to the reblog feed, although it’s subject to constant adding and deleting and usage, so beware. * First Nation - Paw Tracks : Review by Thermostat/Cyclic Defrost. This album needs more attendance, featured back here. The awe inspiring Moondog, which I’ve come to know thanks to Prog not Frog. Moondog and H’art Songs are from 1969 and 79 respectively. Tagged :ambient, downtempo, dub, jazzy, netlabel, retro, rockabilly, surf, triphop, zombiesHere is a pack of netlabel releases I’ve listened to this month, not necessarily released last month though. Ghouls with Attitude @ oddioverplay. Comfort Stand : Two Zombies Later @ comfort stand. If you’re into weird music, zombies & ghouls & halloween, strange compositions with influences like surf & rockabilly, 60’s & 70’s b-movies, and radio sketches, you’ll be in for a treat with these 2 releases (both 2CD compilations). Pioneering oddballs like Bruce Haack ,Boris Karloff and Otis Fodder can be heard here but frankly I haven’t heard 90% of these artists. So you better download these stuff because these tunes are not to be found anywhere else. Bruce Haack and N. Danielson
2006-10-23 23:45:55
Tagged :band, indie, naive, popNo need to introduce Danielson, and their lovely song “Did I step on your trumpet“. They’re a large family of naive indie pop band, similar in lots of ways to Architecture in Helsinki. They’ve recently released a 7″ on Anticon, including a remix of the song and another track that gives the 7″ its name “I’m slow but I’m sloppy“. Here’s that remix and if you haven’t watched it please take your time and watch the video for “Did I step on your trumpet”, it’s a little bit wacky & odd but it’s so much fun, actually it might be the best video I’ve watched in 2006. Buy it from Tonevendor. Did I step on your remix Danielson - Did I step on your Trumpet

Bohren & Der Club of Gore
2008-03-10 03:33:03
2002’s Black Earth is Bohren & Der Club of Gore’s 4th and arguably their best album. Glacially slow funeral jazz with an attention to ambience more than the playing (doesn’t mean that the playing is bad of course). Allmusic says it’s a black metal fan’s lounge jazz act which is surely true, but one thing [...]

Uwan selects.
2008-03-05 10:37:45
Now that the winter seems to retreat and a faux air of spring has already arrived in Istanbul, it’s becoming hard to play anything other than spring music in the radioshows. I’m pretty sure though, the weather’s still messed up all around the world, so there’s a whole bunch of you who’ll love this odd [...]

Let’s Face The Music And Romance
2008-03-04 06:10:27
Ok, here’s a mix by Cenk Akyol, which was for the Valentine’s, yet I forgot to publish it as always. “I decided to upload a selection of mellow tunes from past and present. File under easy listening although more focused on jazz and bossa nova. Enjoy the most sentimental moments…” ASTRUD GILBERTO - The Shadow Of [...]

The Souljazz Orchestra
2008-02-29 05:56:07
Today’s story is about Ottawa’s groovy Souljazz Orchestra . Now we all know Ottawa is the capital of Canada, and Canada’s primary export is multiculturalism. I’m just kidding!. The Turkish education system never teaches you cool stuff like this, I learnt this by myself on the internet. Anyways, based on the fact that Canada’s vast landscape [...]

Kadri Gopalnath
2008-02-25 03:34:44
I’ve downloaded 2 hard to rare albums of the 57 year old Indian saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath from Meshes of the Afternoon. Born in the Karnataka region in southern India, it took Gopalnath 20 years to master the Saxophone. I’ve personally never heard saxophone in Indian music, no wonder he’s the first musician to incorporate the [...]

Masami Kawahara & The Exotic Sounds
2008-02-23 06:02:49
Another reissue by the lovely Tiliqua Records on their “Oriental Erotic Sunshine” series that we’ve been enjoying for some time is Masami Kawahara & The Exotic Sounds ’ 1970 album “Kokotsu / Ecstasy”. Originally released by Columbia Records in 1970, “ Kokotsu” sees the 70’s Japanese obsession with vintage bossa & Latin music coupled with sexploitation [...]

Here’s an outstanding album that’s blown me from track no1. The mysterious French-Vietnamese producer Onra has produced an album in the vein of J Dilla, Madlib the Beat Konducta’s Indian album and Galapagos 4’s Deejay OM. Chinoiseries is an instrumental hip hop album with 32 short tracks constructed from samples taken out of old and [...]

Phalangius

From Cambridge comes the mysterious CDR from Phalangius with a bag of synth tunes made solely on the Roland Juno 6. I sense that this is a fake identity though, as did clone.nl, which think that he’s simply Legowelt. Anyhoo, in the vein of Ghost Box Records & Belbury Poly, Sven Libaek, Mort Garson and [...]

Simply for the fact that these are really the biggest electronic anthems ever and you don’t have the chance to go wrong. Decide to [...]

Ok, first up, I’m in the process of redesigning & adding functions to undomondo, i’ve been planning to do it for a few months (well, more than a few), but as I’m not really skilled in designing & busy most of the time, I couldn’t. This results in less frequent updates as well, because the [...]
