Contest: Blog about my new download site and win $100 2007-07-29 16:00:56 It’ been a long time dream of mine to own a download site for shareware/freeware. This week, I had the opportunity to buy an engine to run it. I could had bought the database(more money) but I wanted to start clean with the latest version of every application. I will use it to promote my own freeware MIS Info Video.
Being a blogger, I added a Blog section for authors of plugins so they can have more exposure. One nice feature is that people can rate/review a file. I want it to be a one stop shop.
And now, meet 1 Cool File

Just copy the text below:
“Steve is launching his brand new site: 1 Cool File. It is a directory of cool files(shareware, freeware, plugins). For example, you can try a new media player after you have just finished a music download. You can add your ebook about making money or a screen saver. That’s not all, it has a section just for blogs(plugins). You can also rate a file or make a review about it. It does support PAD files so tel Read more:Contest
How Linux could be accepted by the mainstream. Is the Linux community ready? 2007-08-17 08:46:06 After watching an interview with a Linux
cafe owner on TV, I started to think if Linux will ever be accepted in the mainstream. I saw in him the passion he had for Linux. I never really use it myself(many many years ago) and have nothing against it. For now, It’s not my cup of tea . Because of this, I can step in the shoes of a potential mainstream user(MU).
Behind the scenes, it’s a very accepted operating system to control servers to phones. But a MU will ask questions like: can it play games, can I write emails/letters, surf the net… and which one to select. To most of this questions the answer is yes. Let’s take them one by one:
Games:
If MU is a real gamer, then MU will be sad that Y games is only available for Windows. Mac user know it well.
Emails:
MU can use Thunderbird on many operating system. So, if MU already
use it then it’s not a learning curve
Letters/Documents:
MU can use Open Office on many operating system. Again, if MU already use it Read more:community

Adding a Blog Directory category in 1 Cool File? 2007-08-15 09:55:46
One feature that I like in 1 Cool file is the multiple category support for a file. That feature let me think that I could use the existing infrastructure to add a Blog Directory
category. I’m testing that with McGrath Dot Ca.
Of course, when entering my information, I had more fields than I really needed. I could add a * to indicate field that could be used for a blog only. In fact, it’s not that many. I also used the screenshot field that point to a file on my blog.
2 other features are the rating and review that could be added to the blog.
Making money?
I imagine that having both files and blogs will attract more visitors to the site. With files, I can have a commission when it’s bought on my site. But with blogs, I don’t have that option.
So, I decided that I could ask for $5/year or $10(one time) in the beginning or a reciprocal link on the main page of the blog. I also will have to approve or not the blog. This way, I can see if they paid or p
Paramount, Dreamworks plays bad guys and side with HD-DVD and against Blu-Ray 2007-08-20 15:42:45
The HD-DVD exclusive group got bigger and triple it’s major studio membership. With Universal only the last major hold up, now comes Paramount
and Dreamworks to further confuse consumers. The format war is already a big mess like it is but when 2 major studios does this now when Blu-Ray was almost winning, you wonder who would benefit. The Digital Bits has it’s finger pointed at Microsoft. If Universal would had switched, those 2 would not had a choice to side with the consumer and the war would now be over.
To be or not be happy
I’m sure that some, HD-DVD fanboys, are happy about that news but prolonging the war will cost more in the end to consumers(HD-DVD and Blu-Ray users alike). If Microsoft is able to scare the mainstream consumers to go online(XBox 360 Live) and bypass the physical media, they both will pay more because the demand of such a disk will be less thus costing more to produce. Also, a dual player will cost more to produce unless both ca Read more:against
1 Cool File: Blog Directory category added 2007-08-19 10:28:09 I finally decided to add a Blog Directory
. Because the site support multiple categories for one entry, I’m able to create a one level model thus creating more value(ranking) to those who browse the Blog Directory. Your blog won’t be hidden deep into the directory that way. I have 150+ categories for now. I think it should be more than enough for now.
How much?
So, because I’m starting, I went with 2 choices:
$2,50USD/year with a reciprocal link on the main page
$3,50USD/year without a reciprocal link
This is the price for now. I may rise it in the near future.
But why charging?
By charging a small amount, this will keep out blogs that are not updated anymore or often. A person will pay if he or she is serious about the blog. Less blogs will also mean more visibility. Also, if a visitor don’t find a file, they may start to look at blogs to visit and bring in traffic.
The blog won’t appear right away. I will check the blog myself because I will approve it
Review: StumbleUpon Advertising Part 2 2007-08-22 13:34:55
Last month, I did Review: StumbleUponAdvertising
. I did it only with one campaign with a link to the main page of my old blog. In part 2, I went with $25(500 visitors) and 4 campaigns at the same time.
A note to advertisers
Start your new campaign during the day and early. When I submitted my new campaigns, it was late on Friday(22h12). It only started on Monday. They don’t approve them during the weekend. Some were rejected and that gave me the ideal to target new groups. Also, I had checked 2 groups and it was considered 2 campaign.
Back to the campaigns
This time around, I made 3 campaign targeting different groups for 1 Cool File and 1 campaign for a specific Linux blog post.
Group 1: weblogs
The goal was to show them the new Blog Directory within 1 Cool File and if they are authors of themes/plugins, to submit their files also.
Result: 1.8% liked versus 0% disliked. 168 visitors
Group 2: Shareware
The goal was to show them 1 Cool File.

AlertPay: a PayPal alternative 2007-08-28 08:59:55
One of my biggest new money maker of last week was Income 4 Dummies now rebranded to Income 4 Beginners. I think the change of names was because it was too close to a little known book series. Another major change was going from PayPal
to AlertPay(also new to me).
Since that move yesterday, I did not have any order. I can understand it because it’s our money after all. So, I decided to do some basic research about them but the ebook author believed he can make more money with them.
About AlertPay
It’s a Canadian company based in Montreal created in 2004. It’s in my own backyard. Ok , it’s a 200KM+ big backward. . They support more countries(long list) than PayPal and it has lower rates compared to PayPal. On the long run, both items will make more money for you and me. This is from the author:
Firstly, the payment processor being used is no longer PayPal. I have switched the system over to use AlertPay. This is a great solution because it means
Tip: Watch out for that link in those email 2007-08-26 23:01:18
Today, I received one email that did not look like spam. No, I did not win at some Lotto, inherit money… I just got this:
Subject: OMG, what are you thinking
Body:
What are you thinking…if pat sees this your divorced dude. :-{) see for yourself… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuBt8bGP5tZ
On the first look, you may think it’s a viral/spam email using YouTube. It looked genuine when you see the link but by placing the mouse over it, I noticed that the “URL” was only a anchor text with no connection to YouTube. Underneath, it was an IP only. So, if a person is new to email, curious, tired to notice or just too quick to click on it, the damage could be very harmful to that person’s computer.
I had clues like the person sending it to me but somewhere on the Internet, there is a “dude” with a Pat that could had been dupe in clicking it. If said “dude” did something stupid at the company picnic with the secretary
Miscellaneous news 2007-08-26 09:46:42 Last week for the current $100 contest
You only got a few days to participate in the contest. With the looks of it, it will be $100 for the main prize because Google did not do a PageRank update so far. It’s your chance to start a new blog if you don’t have one yet and get the “blog bug”
New package options for the Blog Directory
This morning, I added many package options. I’m sure you will find a package that fit your needs. The price start at $2,50/year and goes up to $11,50(one time fee). The highest price is for unlimited blogs with not reciprocal link. So, if your are serious about some of your blogs, I hope you will consider it.
Speaking of pricing
On 1 Cool File, I lowered the price of the advertising. Based on the PageRank prediction of iwebtool, I should get a PR5. But to be safe side, I based my pricing on a PR3.
And one more thing …
It’s the last day for the mega saving on Income 4 Beginners promotion. I’m glad that many to
The winners of the 1 Cool File contest are… 2007-09-01 11:48:16 Like many, I was surprise that the Google PageRank update was not done in August. But it also means that it’s $100CAD for the first prize. Now, the contest winners of 1 Cool File are:
First Prize of $100CAD: Anton Olsen with his blog Link Right 2 for that post
Second Prize $25CAD: Vincent Chow for registering on 1 Cool File
Third Prize $25CAD: Nobody reported errors. That’s nice to know
Congrats to all winners and thank you for all that participated
With that money, even after the exchange rate, they could add their blogs on the Blog Directory of 1 Cool File
Before anyone does that, wait for the next day or 2 unless you purchase the Blog Buffet($11.50).
I smell another contest coming soon!
Note:
With my recent change of domain, I lost a few backlink to this contest. So, those that I could not reached, please update your post to point to this new domain. Thank you.

Why I won’t go see movies in theater made by Universal, Paramount and Dreamworks 2007-08-31 08:28:28
After the dust settled about the news that Paramount
and Dreamworks has joined Universal
in the exclusive HD-DVD camp, I decided that I won’t see most movies
made by them in theater
. The HD format war was almost over and this will only prolong it unnecessary and it’s the consumer who will pay for it. I do this because MONEY(150Millions for Paramount and Dreamworks) is what they understand! So now, they will have a lot less of my money.
If they would go format neutral and support both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, I don’t mind. I just want Blu-Ray to be the standard for any movies that gets out and be done with that stupid format war.
Why Blu-Ray?
If you want to know why I still prefer Blu-Ray, just read the updated By The Numbers II. Blu-Ray has still more overall content. I also made my position clear on my blog. I also commented that the next holiday season will be critical for both sides. I don’t even have a Blu-Ray player but still decided to do somethin

Review: 10 000 visitors to your site for only $9.95! Part 2 2007-08-29 17:36:35 It did took a long time but it just ended. In Review: 10 000 visitors to your site for only $9.95!, I had noticed that I did not received all the traffic I should had. I decided to let it run it’s course.
In that time, I changed domains 3 times but I did a redirection so that I would not loose too much traffic but it’s not enough to make a difference in the numbers below.

The campaign started on June 7 and ended late on August 26. I often got groups of 1-5 at a time/per hour spread across the day. Sometimes, an hour was skip with no referral. During the course of the campaign, I had to stop it a few days. But in the last few days, they stepped up the campaign to finished it and thus I received more traffic than usual.

5 Days Left To Win $ 500 2007-09-26 08:17:47
You have until September 30, 2007 to enter the $500 contest. It’s easy to enter and you just need to follow the rules. At the moment, I have only 8 official entries and 16 prizes.
Why you should enter?
A chance to win $500 of course and familiarize yourself with 1 Cool File and possibilities.
Any future contest?
If the contest is not popular for that kind of prize, you can say good bye to another big contest from me and other bloggers. Yes, the next blogger that will want to make a contest with that kind of money will have to seriously think twice. So, instead of the $500, you will have $25, $50 or $100. It’s something but it’s not $500. The big money prize will come from the few top bloggers out there.
Let’s see, I had 3 times more the entries in the $100 than with the $500 thus far. What is wrong with that picture? Are you waiting at the last minutes? I hope it’s that.
Got burned?
I realize that some of you were burned by another blogger that

Hybrid Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players: Is it the only way? 2007-09-24 09:05:41 After the next holiday season, I hope we will have a better picture about the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD format war. Those who read me know that I’m pro Blu-Ray because of the content but I wrote this for those who may jump soon and don’t want to choose any side.
So, depending of the result after the holiday season and if no clear winner is possible in the near term, I’m sure some of you will look for an hybrid HD player to play safe. That, I can understand. The good news is that Samsung(BD-UP5000) and LG(BH200) will both have those models that will be completely compatible with both formats. The only drawback: price: both are $1000USD or more. But if you live in Canada, you can buy the old LG unit for $800CAD/USD. Of course, this is the suggested retail price. If you can pay less in your area, then good for you.
I know, the price will be lower in 2008, 2009….that’s a given. But I’m looking for now till the first quarter of 2008 and maybe beyond. Here a few op Read more:Hybrid

It’s been so many years that this happen but the good news is that my $500USD contest will cost me a lot less now than when I started a 3 weeks ago.
For those that did not participate yet, I only have 8 official entries so far. So your chances are very good at the moment. Plus, my new affiliate program for those that buy a Blog Package( and get more chances) will be worth it even if you don’t win the main prize. I also have many other prizes.
So, what are you waiting for to enter? You may leave a comment here if you have questions.
P.S. It’s not a joke, I will draw $500 to promote 1 Cool File.

I now have an Affiliate Program for 1 Cool File!!! 2007-09-18 15:07:42 Yes, it’s finally ready.
To make money for me and my fellow bloggers, I created an affiliate program to build the Blog Directory. After that, I will promote it to advertisers so you can get paid reviews leaving more money in your pockets(see the F.A.Q.)
Also in the last 24 hours, I decided to include all bloggers in the affiliates program that buys any Blog Packages. So, if you are ready to make money, it will cost you only $2.50USD to have your blog in the Blog Directory. I removed the obligation of the reciprocal link thus removed a few Blog Packages.
Now, it’s $2.50USD, $5.00USD(both 1 year) and $11.50USD(one time fee, unlimited blogs)
About the basic affiliate program(1 Year packages)
It’s a simple 10% commission payout.
About the affiliate program(Blog Buffet $11.50 one time)
It’s a 2 level commission payout. It’s 15%(you) and 5%(from those under you).

Make French Fries And Get Fuel For Your Car! 2007-09-18 07:08:48 OK, you can’t make that much!
The Granby(Quebec, Canada) owner of the Duhamel rotisseries decided to recycle his cooking oil. So, instead of paying for his 350 liters/week of cooking oil to be taken care off, he now use it for fuel. For 7 months now, his 2 delivery cars and his personal car run on bio-diesel.
He took one year to find the good vegetable fuel that was supposed to warm up the house but found the economy was greater with his car. He found a recipe online but had to adapt it for his needs.
The recipe consist of 20% of wood alcohol (methanol) to used canola oil. Because it’s very cold in the winter, he must add 20% of diesel.
Mr. Duhamel do the transformation himself in his small storage house. It takes 1h30 to make the recipe and 8 hours to ferment.
This fuel must be used in diesel cars. That why he bought 2 Smart for deliveries and a Jetta for him. In 3 years if it goes well, all of his 12 delivery cars will run on it. It cost about $130 in regular fuel pe Read more:French
Have you joined BlogRush yet?, $500 Contest update, 1 Cool File teaser 2007-09-16 13:07:09 Here are 3 news for you this Sunday:
Have you joined BlogRush yet?
I’m sure that many heard of BlogRush by now. If you did not, it’s a way to syndicate your feed on other blogs and bring more traffic. The ideal is very good plus, it’s free.
But I waited a bit before joining in because I wanted to know if it worked. Now, that I that have seen a few post about the result, I decided to test it myself on this blog.
Once I saw the video, I could see the viral effect it could have and was surprise of the quality of the video for a free widget. It work like this: for each view I get on my site, I have one on the network. Those that signed below me, will also help my visibility by adding their views to mine. It goes up to 10 level down.
The video took longer than actually applying and adding the code.
I which them good luck with that new project!
Edit: After posting, I decided to visit other blogs in my BlogRush widget. Out of 5, 1 had the widget installed on the blog. Read more:Contest
What is forex anyway? 2007-09-13 23:01:36 For a couple of weeks now, I had seen the term forex used on many blogs. I knew it was about the market but never took the time to look it up. Today, I did while looking a sitepoint.com. A guy was selling a site and it’s where I learned it was for Foreign Exchange. It’s the currency trading to be more precise. I had an ideal it was that but because of my French roots, I was not so sure.
Show me the money
The seller was nice by giving a very good description and I could not believed the amount of money it represent in a day. One day of forex trading is equal to 1 month of the Dow Jones. I guest trading currencies is big money.
To show how much money that’s in there, some will pay up to $13-17 for some keywords like: trading currencies, fx trading, currency trading, global forex trading, forex trading platforms …..That’s far from the .15 cents I often get.

That reminds me that a few years ago, the Canadian dollar was 0.63 versus the American do
How many really want to make money online? 2007-09-13 08:58:34 I’m working on a project(beta) for 1 Cool File that will make money to some of the bloggers that would be in my Blog Directory category. No, it’s not the “paid review part” of the project because I need more bloggers for that. It’s something else that I only started testing yesterday.
But during my research for statistics, I wanted to know how many blogs existed today. I still taught it was 75-80Millions but it turns out that it’s now 104.4 Millions. Of that, I can’t remember where, but 10 Millions updates their blogs very often. That number was from the 75-80Millions.
Now, if only 0.01% of the 10 Millions(to be safe) are serious in investing in their blog and want to make money, it’s 100 000 possible clients for me to tap into. $2.50(lowest Blog Package) per blog is not very much and many have more than 1 blog. I’m sure that many of the 10 Millions would be happy to make a few bucks every month. An advertiser will not look twic Read more:online
The Treadmill is killing My DSL Connection 2007-09-12 08:31:49 Since the treadmill was installed a week ago, I had even more troubles with my DSL connection. I had them before but the treadmill, at least, allowed me to determined what was going with my Internet connection.
A little background
I got my DSL a few years ago. At that time, my profile could not be at the maximum because I was too far to the central. I still got a good speed with an unlimited monthly bandwidth. The latter is why I stayed with DSL. If I go elsewhere, I would be capped and I don’t want to worry about that. Also, I have a good price versus the others. I decided to live with the minor hiccups even if it’s annoying sometimes and make me . Since then, I blamed the wiring/distance for the cause of the troubles. I should mentioned that I have errors on the phone lines. The level 2 technician had to lower the profile to keep the connection stable.
Tell me about the router
Like I mentioned before, the connection began to go to less than 1KB/sec when the treadmill Read more:Treadmill
Last day for the $ 500 contest and other news 2007-09-30 06:47:12 Contest
Yes, it’s the last day to win the $500 contest.
I “sold” 2 Blog Buffet(same family) since yesterday which means that if they don’t win the $500, they may still will be fully reimburse(Blog Buffet only) or upgraded to Blog Buffer(1 entry so far). Why? Because they have bought a package, they will be eligible for the 15 second prizes. Unless I have a flood of entries, and sell many packages today, their odds are very very good.
Other news
My own computer decided to give me memory/booting troubles. It always reboot after a few minutes and that’s if I can login because it reboots sometimes before that. So for now, I only have 512MB out of my 2Gig. I did test all memory modules yesterday with MemTes86 v3.2 which gave errors on 2 of them but hang on the others. Maybe it’s a too old version. Anyway, I will need to test further.
I was able to get in Safe mode(last night) so far without a single reboot during the night. This means that some files
Friendswin will launch on October 1 2007-09-27 23:01:08 When FriendsWin launch on Monday, October
1, it will be the biggest thing in social networking. Why? Because they will offer the 4 major things found elsewhere in one site:
Social networking (grow by 89%/year, expected to double in 2 years)
Online dating (see below)
Employment Industry (search for a job or employee)
Internet Home Business (who don’t want to make money from home)
The funny thing is that on The Loop(G4-AOTS) this week, they were talking about the “backlash” of general social networking because they all look the same and people are starting to be tired of managing many sites. Niche sites will still be there but with FriendsWin(general), you can also make money with an affiliate program and it’s where it is separate from the other general sites.
I’m not in any social network site but this was the key element for me to register(free). You must pay $9.97/month to become an “Independent Marketing Representative” when it launch. I
My Next Even Bigger Promotion? 2007-09-27 10:57:02
I know, the current contest is not over yet but I got another promotion in mind. But this time, it won’t be free because I will be using the Platinum Membership fee from 1 Cool File. Because I have the Million Euro Wiki Business Cards page, I have 1 chance in 25 of winning a 16 GB Apple iPod Touch and this gave me the ideal for doing something similar for a promotion. Of course, my price of a Platinum Membership is lower.
At the moment, I have a special for the first 150 Platinum Membership. It’s only $30 and no need to buy a Blog Buffet thus a total saving of $41.50. The rule would be simpler: you buy a Platinum Membership and you get 1 chance.
What would you like better between more winners or bigger prizes?
1 in 10 with 15 winners of $100
1 in 15 with 10 winners of $150
1 in 25 with 6 winners of $250
1 in 50 with 3 winners of $500
1 in 75 with 2 winners of $750
1 in 150 with 1 winner of $1500

Why Buy In The U.S. Instead of Canada For Some Items 2007-10-12 12:13:00 Yesterday, Sharp Canada
announced that the BD-HP20U Blu-Ray player is available in Canada. So far, it’s nothing big. It’s about 5 weeks after the U.S. announcement. I can understand some delay because we are used to that here.
But here is the kicker for Canadians: the suggested retail price is $649CAD thus $100 more than the U.S. suggested retail price of $549USD. It can be easily found online for $499USD.
I even found the BD-HP20U on amazon.com for $444.06USD. If you find this in a few months, it will be even lower.
What’s the problem then?
I’m sure that some of you might think that the exchange rate may be a factor for the higher price. It’s not! The Canadian dollar is now higher by a few cents than the American dollar. Both could have the same suggested retail price but the online/b&m price could be around the $500CAD mark depending on the variation of both currencies.

The Aftermath Of Doing 2 Big Contests($ 800+) 2007-10-11 10:40:01
Last week, I gave away more than $800 in prizes to promote 1 Cool File.
The first contest was held on my blog with a $500 main prize. The result was disappointing and it failed to increase the number of bloggers on my blog directory thus adding affiliates. I’m now sure that some taught it was another scam. The winner was happy to have less competition on that one. He also bought a Blog Buffet to increased it’s chances and it paid off.
The second was held on ProBlogger’s blog with a $300 prize but was part of too many prizes. Even Darren mentioned it here. I had a lot more traffic during that period from his blog but it did not convert at all. I hope that the other sponsors did better than me.
