How to get your new site index by Google in a few days 2007-07-04 09:07:43
All my previous blogs were link to others thus making them visible on Google
very quickly. This time, I decided to see how long it would take while I added some content each day. So on June 27, I created the new domain. I installed WordPress on June 28. I removed pingback so that it would not update elsewhere(i.e. Technorati) and did not submit the blog to Google for inclusion. This could take weeks anyway. Because of the funny but naughty nature of the blog, I could not use Adsense(I think) on it and I’m using an alternative. This new blog is also an experiment by itself(more later).
Her is how I did it
I did 2 things:
Used the Google sitemaps generator v2 plugin
Added the sitemap from above in Google’s webmaster tools. I used my Google Analytics/Adwords account.
The result
On July 1, my site was available on Google. You could do it yourself or pay someone to do it. With the latter, you should expect more in terms of service like being in the top 10 and on
Why Blu-Ray will win the format war 2007-07-03 08:32:27
In recent weeks, Blu-Ray has more and more sites/people taking their side. I’m on the sidelines because I don’t own either one so, no investment to protect. Also, I’m just waiting on a few titles, mostly from Blu-Ray, and a price drop before buying a player.
Why I think Blu-Ray will win
Those are just a few things:
Because content is king and take a look here. It’s a good research and many people buy top movies. Like I mentioned on a previous post, check you DVD collection.
Blockbuster decided to offer Blu-Ray to more places. HD-DVD will remain available to the test locations and online. It’s a big name recognition for many people.
Better content protection with BD+. The studios will like this better than the semi-crack HD-DVD protection(cat and mouuse). If BD+ can resist the first few waves of crack attempts, the HD-DVD studios will follow and support it too. I may not like DRM but it’s a there.
The PS3 has a Blu-Ray and it’s so Read more:format
Review: StumbleUpon Advertising 2007-07-09 07:51:26 In my quest to review methods to bring more people to my blog, I decided to try StumbleUponAdvertising
after seeing it on AdesBlog. I tried it for a period of 5 days with a maximum of 200 per day for a budget of $50USD. They stumble on the main page. The cost is $0.05 per Stumbler.
Analyze This!
The first half, I did not change anything to my blog.
On July 5, I removed the game banners making the site load a little faster.
On July 6, I had trouble in the night because the bar was all red. It started to stabilized in the morning and I changed a few banners to text link. During the day, I added Auction Ads in the main page for each of the 10 post. This slowed the page yet I had more clicks than with Adsense. I removed it anyway and put it in the post page instead and only show 5 post now on the main page.
On July 6 in the early evening, I added a welcome to StumbleUpon in my header.
I watched the feedback %. It went from 70% to now 80%. I should mention that I started with 80%. I pau

Blog news and last day for the contest! 2007-07-06 08:19:08 Blog news:
Recently, I made some changes to be more reader friendly: I…
Added a voting plugin that will help me see if the content is good or lacking.
Added back the MyBlogLog that I had completely forgotten.
Added a statistics page where you can see the most popular post(can’t make it work on the sidebar???)
Added my own banners of MIS Info Video at the top. You can use it if you want
Removed many banners(Hoyle games) but left the 2 free banners(bottom, sidebar) and the Search Engine Guide(I love dogs and it’s cute). Some banners were converted to text link instead and are better for this blog content.
All this should reduce loading time and give you a better experience. You can make suggestions.
Contests news:
It’s the last day for the current contest.
I also canceled the contest and competition on MISfan.com. They will both be back in another version that should make it more easy and worthwhile. :D So, stay tuned and come back often!
News: PS3 60GB get a $100 price reduction and a bigger 80GB model 2007-07-10 08:00:03
The title almost says it all but…
80GB???? What a small hardware upgrade. You can pay the same price
than the old 60GB kit and get 20GB more. Yes, you got a racing game MotorStorm with it. Big deal! I don’t even care about that but my nephew would. What kind of move is this versus the XBox 360 Elite with it’s 120GB. Some may forget about the Blu-Ray and focus more on the hard drive.
Sony should get a third kit without any games but with a 120GB. The price should be around $600CAD for that kit. The bigger hard drive would be useful when they launch their streaming video service. All the HD movies will need a warm and cozy space. But I think they prefer that we get Blu-Ray movies/TV shows instead.
So, here in Canada, the 60GB is now $549CAD and the 80GB will be $659CAD(August).The upside is that if you want to buy a Blu-Ray player that can play games, the 60GB is a good price. Again, a bigger hard drive would had been nicer but they now offer the same 5 Read more:reduction

Why ReviewMe Advertorials could be good 2007-07-16 09:26:39 I think the ideal by ReviewME is a good one and I’m not opposed against it like many bloggers. Some bloggers (Dosh Dosh, ProBlogger, Blogoscoped, John Chow) do raised a few good points but it should not be dismissed off hand too quickly.
Here is how advertorial could work for all parties(Advertiser, Blogger and Readers)
It should be made clear to the readers. A new tag(advertorial post) should be created for that. This may help those using RSS/email to filter them out.
The advertiser should write it for the blog and not be a simple cut and paste that they reuse for other blogs. They could match it better with the style of the blogger.
Readers should look at it like a new way to know about a product/service. It’s not a new concept because newspapers and magazines use it now.
Bloggers should not have more than 1 or 2 per week.
Comments must be allowed and let advertiser/blogger to respond to any questions. Comments should be focus to the product/service.
Bloggers could add
Official Alexa Toolbar for Firefox is out! 2007-07-20 23:01:51
I have been using the AlexaToolbar
(Internet Explorer) and SearchStatus (Firefox
) for a few months. But now, an official Alexa Toolbar for Firefox called Sparky is now available.
Heeeere is Sparky!
This is important for site owners because it will greatly help in getting a better Alexa ranking. The lower the number, the more money site owners can get from advertisers. Now, I just need visitors to installed Sparky.
I will still use SearchStatus (Firefox) because it give more information(Who is, Google PageRank…) but I did installed Sparky to make sure that my visits are counted on my sites and on other owner’s sites that I go to. The new toolbar will show a traffic trend that SearchStatus did not do without using more space.
Depending on the type of sites, this will help greatly in improving the ranking.
For example: (Site, Firefox, Internet Explorer). The numbers are for July 2007
Steve’s Tech Blog (81.44%, 15.74%)
2012movies.net (32.52%, 62.62%)

Review: Fire Board Plugin (not public yet) 2007-07-20 10:50:09
After reading One Year Goal - Fire BoardPlugin
for Wordpress, I was going to leave a comment but decided to make a post instead. You should first read it because Spud made a good review and raised a few things.
Ah yes! the One Man. I have seen it often but not on my blog.
What is the Fire Board Plugin?
In short, if you did not read Spud review, it’s a way to contribute to a blog by buying a link. The link can be there for a long time until someone bid more than you. He has many spots available.
It’s still in beta and not available to the public yet(more later).
My recommendations
-The ideal is good and is similar for one thing to bla.st(see my lower sidebar). The earlier your are in, the better for the advertiser. Here, it’s a contributor to the blog(see TOS) and not an advertiser so that you can run Text Link Ads. He should change Featured Sites to Latest contributors to better reflect that fact.
-If One Man his wise, he won’t charge for he&r
Tip: Leaving a relevant comment in the good post 2007-07-19 10:09:30 This tip is mostly for new commenter’s.
Something that most bloggers don’t like is when a comment is not about the actual post. Yes, this include spam but also comments that don’t belong.
For example, someone wrote about adding his blog in my ViralTag/ViraLink post in a PS3 post or commented 1 line about the post but the rest(6 lines) was borderline spam. In the case of the ViralTag/ViraLink, I added them because I was in their Viral post but I deleted the comment.
I will sometimes email them about it if I have the time. And now, I will have this post for them.
I’m not strict and I can understand 1 irrelevant line out of 6. That line could be a subject for another future post.
As I already mentioned in another post, the reader should be able to contact a blogger without using the comment area but said reader should also check the About page or Contact form first or better yet, do a search for the proper post.

Oh My God! I deleted a comment 2007-07-22 12:39:35
Yes it’s true. I actually deleted a comment. Did I want to censor the person? Was it for profanity? Was it spam? The answer is NO to all of those.
But why Steve? Tell me why?
Simple: the person did not focus at all on the subject of that particular post. Also, 2 post below it, I made the following post: Tip: Leaving a relevant comment in the good post.
So, what was the comment and where?
To protect the person, I will just rewrite unedited the comment. It was in my post: Official Alexa Toolbar for Firefox is out!
I simply can’t believe that you are rocking the default Wordpress 2.0 theme on your blog? Do you have any plans to change it? Does this make you stand out more?
To be polite, I will answer it anyway
Except for 2 (here and The Contest Winner) out of my 5 blogs, all my other blogs got a non-default theme. The Contest Winner is only one week old. Call it laziness (or lack of time) if you want but I don’t mind the default theme for now. Yes, conte
A new Google Analytics competitor from Microsoft 2007-07-25 07:47:45
Code name Gatineau(name of a city in the Province of Quebec, Canada), the new baby from Microsoft
will give the sex/age of those surfing on your site. How? By using the information of the Live account on the computer. They won’t give more information thus protecting the anonymity of the surfer. Like with Adwords, advertisers will be able to see how an AdCenter campaign is doing. It will be in beta soon.
If done right, it could be a good way to determine some basic demographic stats about your visitors so to be able to better tailor your content with that information. But, they need to give you access to this important information first. Will it work with Firefox?

Got the dreaded PayPal Limited Account Access email 2007-07-27 14:50:43 After reading on Ades Blog about his limited access to his PayPal
account issue, I had the same thing happen to me today. But…
.. it was a phishing scam. The email was not properly formatted thus did not received it in html and was able to see all the code but not the text very well. The link they wanted me to click on was pointing to another site. All the other links were from PayPal but mostly of GIF, JPG. Also, I made a big purchase yesterday with my account(more on that soon ).
The formated looks very professional on first look.
The phishing site was closed just a few minutes after I had received the email. I think PayPal got a few emails about it!
Now, I’m wondering. Did they read Ades Blog or have a Google Alert with “PayPal limited account”? They see a post, check comments for possible baits and try to “phish” someone very fast.

Contest: Blog about my new download site and win $100 2007-07-29 16:00:56 It’ been a long time dream of mine to own a download site for shareware/freeware. This week, I had the opportunity to buy an engine to run it. I could had bought the database(more money) but I wanted to start clean with the latest version of every application. I will use it to promote my own freeware MIS Info Video.
Being a blogger, I added a Blog section for authors of plugins so they can have more exposure. One nice feature is that people can rate/review a file. I want it to be a one stop shop.
And now, meet 1 Cool File
The contest
Just copy the text below:
“Steve is launching his brand new site: 1 Cool File. It is a directory of cool files(shareware, freeware, plugins). For example, you can try a new media player after you have just finished a music download. You can add your ebook about making money or a screen saver. That’s not all, it has a section just for blogs(plugins). You can also rate a file or make a review about it. It does support PAD files so tel Read more:Contest
Is the next PageRank update starting? 2007-08-01 12:50:58 While visiting Digital Point today, a new thread about PageRank
update was started where some are beginning to be updated and some not. If true, it means that the official update will be next few day like many expected.
Why it’s important?
It’s important because Google don’t update the official page often(3-4 months). The last one was in May/April. It also important to those who want more revenue from advertisers. An higher PR means more money.
And don’t forget that I have a contest for those who register on 1 Cool File or blog about it. If you post before the Google PR update and you win, it’s not $50 but $100 that you will win. It’s not the only prize and the others are not affected by the PR and you don’t need a blog. What are waiting for?
On a side note, Robosoft updated it’s database. That was fast! So, when authors update their Robosoft like I did, they will be able to add new software to the site.
If you have a site, I
I got my first official file on 1 Cool File 2007-07-31 13:51:59
It was bound to happens this week.
The file is: Spyware Terminator(freeware)
I don’t know it but I was contacted by them to do review(unpaid) about their product. Because I was about to release MIS Info Video and also launching 1 Cool File, I did not accept the offer. Also, I’m not able to test this type of software properly. I did suggest to add it to 1 Cool File.
If your are a current user, you could leave a rating/review in it’s page. Don’t forget that I have a contest for those who register on 1 Cool File or blog about it.
In other news, I contacted Robosoft and 1 Cool File should be included in a few days in their database. Expect to have new stuff coming in soon. I did not know if Spyware Terminator(freeware) would had been the first or a software submitted with Robosoft.

Being “Evil” with the Technorati bug thus making more money 2007-08-04 14:24:34
I sure by now that many of you noticed the bug with the ranking on Technorati

You will see that I could ask $100(red) instead of $80(blue) because of that bug.
Conclusion
There is a lessons in here. An advertiser that do business with a service that use this rank, may end up paying more today because of that simple bug. Today, it’s Technorati but tomorrow is could be Alexa, Google PageRank …. Anyway, most services use more than one ranking and that will lessen the impact of such a bug. I Don’t and Won’t Use Internet Explorer! 2007-08-09 23:01:05 This is response to my fellow blogger Spud Oregon.
I started with Netscape in 94 and with the various version(Mozilla, Firefox). Since then, I converted my entire family to Firefox because I was tired to have to reinstalled their computer because of virus and spywares. It is for security reasons, support for older Windows version like Windows 98(IE7 don’t!) and I love tab browsing. And yes, my mom use Firefox.

I moved my blog here 2007-08-13 09:29:55 Welcome to my new blog
Not, It ’s not a mistake. I’m using a redirect.
When I started Steve’s Tech Blog back in Feb 2007, I was new to the blogging world, SEO, ranking….and decided to go with a subdomain. I took over the domain back in Dec. 2006 and wanted to continue the owner’s work. A subdomain allowed me to to that. But now, I come to understand that it was a mistake on my part going with a subdomain and should had gotten a domain name. A few months ago, I tried moving but decided that the new blog MISFan should be used for M.I.S. Also, I did not want to loose my ranking.
I finally decided to use an old domain(mcgrath.ca) that I had for a long time and it’s registered until 2011. The PR is 0 because it was used for business emails more than anything. I will take the PR hit for now but we are near a PR update. I may have time to add some backlinks. One advantage is the domain is very short.
The subject of my blog is still to write about things
Friendswin: Is it the next MySpace/Facebook but with a twist? 2007-08-11 23:01:57
Friendswin is a new social network site that should take the Internet by storm, at least they hope. I never participated in this kind of social network until I had read the home page. I decided to be in the first wave.
So, why did I jump in?
Because it’s for my business and a way to promote it.
I took the best part and will cut and paste:
It will offer video enabled profiles, video conferencing between friends, video dating and many other features to entice and serve a growing membership. - Nothing new here.
An affiliate compensation plan that pays significant commissions for referrals. - That’s new.
Anyone 18 years or older can join for free, sample our great destination and connect with their friends. - When for a business, this maybe of some value.
An affiliates model?
Yes, I was sure to attract your attention with this one. For that “privilege”, you pay $9.97/month and you will get a small cut($0.30 up to $1.00) for each one under you th Read more:twist

Universal is to blame for the current Blu-Ray/HD-DVD format war 2007-08-11 09:44:50
The title is correct. I’m not talking about the Toshiba/Sony hardware war. It’s too late for that now. It’s all about content now.
I use current because Universal
(last major hold out) is being paid by the HD-DVD group for exclusive content. It’s not a new practice because the Blu-Ray group does the same. The longer the format
war, the better it is for Universal, at least short term. In this case, GE, the parent company of Universal, is not happy about it and made some pressures on Universal executives.
300 (Warner), available in both formats, was sold 2 to 1 in favor of Blu-Ray. Seeing another evident “win” for Blu-Ray, Universal should do the right thing for their clients by supporting both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD before the years end. Sooner will be better. And don’t forget that Disney and Fox did not release their best movie yet! This year major blockbusters, Spider-man 3 and Pirates of The Caribbean, are only on Blu-Ray.

On a side note, Robosoft updated it’s database. That was fast! So, when authors update their Robosoft like I did, they will be able to add new software to the site.

I got my first official file on 1 Cool File 2007-07-31 13:51:59 It was bound to happens this week.
