2007-05-17 00:27:53
That seems to be the consensus around the country - Candace Parker is hot. Not only did she make People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful People list, we were told earlier this week that she is now engaged to be married - to Sheldon Williams no less.

Phil Fulmer Makes Too Much Money
2007-05-03 07:27:37
According to a Jimmy Hyams, Phillip Fulmer makes too much money and Bruce Pearl doesn't make enough. That's right, Jimmy Hyams wrote it and and it surprises me. The numbers don't surprise me but the fact the fact that Hyams wrote it does.

According to an interview this afternoon on the Sports Animal with John Maranto, Antonio Bell's high school coach at Mainland High School, it was a great pickup.

Vols Baseball Post Season Step 1
2007-05-18 06:01:39
Tennessee is fighting for their tournament lives in Gainesville this weekend and Rod Delmonico is fighting to save his job. Not all will agree with me but I think Delmonico is truly on the hot seat right now if he doesn't make the SEC tournament.

A Monday Night Look at the SEC Blogosphere
2007-05-21 20:30:55
The guys at Georgia Sports Blog point out that as of today, it has been 2000 days since Alabama beat Auburn. I wonder how many days it has been since Tennessee or Georgia won a game against the other at home? 1683 days by my count. Anybody want to check my math? Florida and Kentucky fans are debating whether or not they consider each other a rivalry. It’s the age old tradition versus recent success argument. I guess, like the rest of the country, there’s not much going on in Lexington and Gainesville that’s newsworthy right now. Meanwhile, Kentucky fans are convinced they didn’t run off Tubby but rather he left because he didn’t see eye to eye with Mitch Barnhart. Think we’ll be having that discussion about Fulmer next year? Vandy is celebrating a big week in baseball with their first ever SEC Championship in the sport, some weekly individual player awards, and the upcoming match up this week with the puke orange (that would be us). Come on, it&rs

Jason Allen Likes His Eggs Raw
2007-05-21 14:48:24
We like to check in with former Vol stars from time to time to see how things are going in their post Tennessee careers. This week it’s Jason Allen that’s making headlines. The Miami Herald is reporting that Allen’s off season workout consists of his mother and a couple hundred dozen eggs. No I am not making it up. A person couldn’t make up something like this. According to the article, the skill needed to catch raw eggs is the “true test of poise, athleticism and quickness in the Allen household”. It’s all fun and games until…. somebody drops an egg. The penalty for egg on the furniture is pretty severe. Mama Allen threatens to bring down the hammer if egg gets on her new sofa! She says, “I’ll tackle everybody”. That’s gold Jerry! The article also pointed out that as a junior in 2004, Jason Allen was the first Tennessee non-linebacker to lead the team in tackles. Maybe there is something to this egg thing. A

Vols SEC Tournament Bound
2007-05-20 21:19:08
Congratulations to the Tennessee Vols Baseball team for finishing strong and qualifying for the SEC Tournament in Birmingham this week. It wasn’t easy. Tennessee (33-23, 13-15 SEC) was forced to win some games down the stretch including a first ever series win in Baton Rouge against LSU. Still, it came down to the season’s final weekend in Gainesville. The Vols needed at least two wins to get themselves into the tournament and that’s exactly how many they got. The Diamond Vols got the final win they needed, an 11-7 victory behind senior pitcher Craig Cobb on Saturday. This came just one day after an embarrasing 20-2 loss on Friday night. Tennessee will play #1 seed Vanderbilt on Wednesday at 6:00pm. Vandy won all three games against the Vols this season. However, Tennessee is 5-2 all time against the Dores in the tournament. The last time the two teams met was in 1995. The Vols are 24-19 all time in the SEC Tournament which is good enough for the fourth best win

Baseball Vols fall to Ole Miss
2007-05-25 00:16:29
Tennessee’s lone senior Craig Cobb got the call for Thursday’s game against the Ole Miss Rebels but his night was short lived. Cobb gave up 5 runs and was pulled with one out in the first inning. The Vols were in a hole they never could climb out of. Lance McClain came on and did a nice job keeping the Rebels in check. He pitched the final 7.2 innings for Tennessee and held Ole Miss to a single run. The only offense the Vols could muster was a 3-run home run by Tony Delmonico in the 6th. Tennessee loaded the bases in the 7th but was unable to score and Ole Miss held on for a 6-3 victory. Next up will be a rematch with Vanderbilt tonight at 7:30 in an elimination game. Ever heard of Houndstooth Condominiums? I’ll give you a hint. They are within walking distance of Bryant-Denny stadium, close enough to “spit on Fulmer”. I don’t know if the ads are all still up but um, well I’m really not sure what to say. Elsewhere there is lots of news ab

Baseball Vols Advance
2007-05-24 05:00:22
Exceptional pitching from the Commodores, that’s what we were supposed to see on Wednesday night. Instead, Tennessee proved that they have great pitching of their own. The Vols got a terrific outing from James Adkins to open SEC Tournament play. The junior lefty pitched 8.1 innings and gave up only one hit and two runs. Neither run was earned. It was Adkins seventh win on the season and definitely his biggest of the year. The bullpen was a bit shaky but did just enough to get the job done and Tennessee held on to win 6-4 against the nations top team. Vandy fans aren’t happy about the opening round loss. No one likes to lose a tournament game to a rival but I doubt the game will have much affect on the Dores NCAA tournament fate, even if they lose again tomorrow. Their regular season resume speaks for itself and they should be one of the nation’s top seeds. Tennessee will play again tonight at 9:00 pm against #5 seed Ole Miss. The Rebels beat #4 seed Mississippi

Morning Vols Twaddle
2007-05-23 06:30:53
I got these cool new T images to use like bullet points to highlight each blurb. Pretty cool huh? You can tell that we are really moving up in the world here at the VolNation Times. Today there are 101 days until Tennessee football. Know what that means? Tomorrow there will be 100. Don’t forget about Tennessee and Vandy tonight in the opening round of the SEC Tournament. We learned good news yesterday that Commodore ace David Price will NOT be pitching tonight. More on the game can be found at utsports or vandymania. Game time is 6pm and it will be on CSS. If you can’t get the TV coverage you should be able to follow along here. On the message board you might want to check out the thread An Auburn fans prediction for Tennessee football 2007. I won’t spoil it, but I think the overall record is in line with what most Tennessee fans are predicting. Also on the board, the fond memories continue of the 1985 Tennessee and Auburn game. That one is a classic for sure. I h

Leak Signs with Bucs
2007-05-22 14:47:38
Chris Leak signed with the Bucs? I thought I read that he was drafted by the Bears. Oh wait, you aren’t talking about, it can’t be….. C.J. Leak. Trust me, I had to read this article twice myself just to be sure I understood it correctly. It is true. C.J. attended the Bucs mini-camp as a long shot with a dream and actually ended up making the team. Who could have guessed? Probably nobody but him. As of today, Leak is officially part of the 80-man roster of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is listed as a tight end, the same position as the Buffalo Bills signed him a year ago. Training camp begins July 26th. It’s kind of ironic that Juicy Curtis Leak actually played for Tampa in 1976. Well, by played, I mean he was on the roster. He didn’t actually play in a game. Leak’s stats at Tennessee: 11-22 for 122 yards and 1 TD. The lone touchdown? A 15-yard completion to Bret Smith against then #8 Georgia.

Nick Saban shows his underwear
2007-07-30 14:00:17
I know, having a picture of Nick Saban on VolNation is almost sacrilegious. However, I found this story too good to pass up. I heard this on a local radio show from Friday: When Nick Saban first came to Alabama, he saw a bunch of guys walking around campus with their pants low showing their underwear - as is the style these days. One of the first meetings he had in the spring, Coach Saban stood in front of his team and dropped his pants, turned around and did a 360 and then pulled them up. He then walks to the other side of the room, where everybody could see him really well, and pulls down his pants and does the same thing again. You can imagine the looks on the players faces. He then walks back to the front of the room and says (paraphrased to the best of my memory), “Alright guys, you’ve seen my rear end. If i see your underwear anymore you are really going to see my rear end and you are not going to like it the next time.” It’s almost like he took a pl

Inky Johnson named student coach
2007-07-29 23:30:58
It was announced this week that Inky Johnson will spend his senior season at Tennessee as a student coach for the team. I think it’s great that Inky will get to play a role with this years team, albeit off the field. He has been a true inspiration to both players and fans alike with his positive attitude and the way he has handled himself through his tragic injury. Discuss Inky Johnson. Inky is not the only former Vol to become a coach this week. Aaron Green joined Bruce Pearl’s staff as a graduate manager. Green, who played for the Vols from 1995-1999, recorded six 20-win seasons in seven years as coach at Cleveland High School.

Johnny Majors returns to Tennessee
2007-07-29 20:40:34
I’m sure many of you have read the articles over the last week or so announcing that Johnny Majors is moving back to Tennessee . No, he’s not coming to replace Fulmer. Just to live. It’s not quite the same this time around. The last time Coach Majors was returning home to Knoxville, it was to a hero’s welcome. It was 1977. He had just won the National Championship at Pittsburgh and was returning to his alma mater, his home, to resurrect the program. I don’t want to get into the whole Fulmer vs. Majors debate but I think it’s a shame that he appears to be more respected in Pittsburgh than he is in Tennessee. It doesn’t seem right somehow to read of a Johnny Majors Room there with pictures of the 82 win over Alabama and other memorable moments in his Tennessee career. (read link above) It’s hard for me to remember clearly exactly how I felt when Coach Majors was run out of town at the end of the 92 season. I seem to remember feeling about our football program

2007 Tennessee Vols Football Pre-Season Predictions
2007-08-01 15:06:45
It’s a mere 31 days until Tennessee kicks of their 2007 college football season against California. The predictions from Vols fans for this season are all over the board. You have your tried and true Tennessee loyalists who can never find the courage to pick against the Vols. It might be bad luck, right? They are predicting 14-0 and a National Championship. It could happen. Then you have the legions of the miserables who refuse to predict that the Vols could have a good season no matter what. Maybe some just don’t want to get their hopes up and others just don’t have confidence in the current staff or roster. They believe we will be lucky to win 7 or 8 games, maybe less. It’s entirely possible. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That said, now is the time to go on record and give us your predictions for the season now, at the beginning of August. Show everyone else how much you know (or how little) and lay the foundation so that you can look back after the

Tennessee Vols Basketball Schedule
2007-08-05 23:14:26
Tennessee released the official 2007-2008 full basketball schedule today. I know some had been waiting for this all week so I thought I would go ahead and post it. It’s far from the Tennessee basketball schedules that you may have been used to under previous coaching regimes. This year, as has been the case since Coach Pearl arrived, there are some great non-conference games to look forward to. Notice only one home game in the month of December. 2007-08 Tennessee Basketball Schedule Date Day Opponent Location Time/Result 11-02-2007 Fri California (Pa.) (exhibition) Knoxville, Tenn. The same old Tennessee or not?
2007-08-04 23:59:09
The coaches always have a lot to say this time of year. They are excited about the new season and can’t wait to get to work on all of the plans and ideas they’ve had during the summer. Just how much weight do we put in all we are being told right now? If everything we are hearing holds true, I’m not sure that any of us will recognize the Vols this season. 1. The 3-4 defense. This one seems to be one that we’ve heard for a while now but I’m not sure that it’s ever been discussed to the level that it has so far this year. Linebacker seems to always be a strength for Chavis coached defenses and moving to a 3-4 would allow us to have another one on the field. The down side is that it has always been argued that you need a dominant nose guard to be effective in a 3-4 and we don’t have one. Coaches and players alike have assured us that it’s something we are going to see. No one is suggesting that we are moving away from the 4-3 but rather

Fulmer comments from Saturday morning
2007-08-04 14:40:14
Here is the audio from Coach Fulmer ’s comments during the media day Saturday morning. It’s about 20 minutes long. He breaks down the outlook of the team and his thoughts on the newcomers position by position. Fulmer Audio A couple other comments from Fulmer that were not part of that clip: -Jonathan Heffney will return punts. Austin Rogers could also be used as he has some experience there. -LaMarcus Coker will be the primary kick returner but there are a group of others that could work themselves into the mix. -There will be a special package in place on offense for someone like Eric Berry, Gerald Jones or Lucas Taylor. -The staff will simplify the offense enough to get some young guys on the field early. The guys who can make big plays will be on the field and Coach Fulmer does expect an impact from this freshman class. Dicuss Coach Fulmer’s comments

Vols Fall Practice Day 1
2007-08-04 01:40:44
Fall practice has started! Can you feel it? Did you wake up Friday morning and feel a bit different? It was only the first practice and there were no pads but it’s exciting nonetheless. The buzz word from practice today seems to be speed, on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Let’s hope those reports are accurate. William Brimfield (#96) is an absolute beast. He is listed as 6-6 and 300 pounds. He really is huge. There is a great summary that you should definitely check out . It stuck out to me that Qunitin Hancock was practicing with the first team over Josh Briscoe. Anybody else tired of hearing about the 3-4 defense? We get it. The Vols are going to use it some this year. How much remains to be seen. I don’t understand why coaches and media need to keep reminding us of this. First off, most of us will believe it when we see it. Second, it’s not like the Vols staff invented that defense or something. Erik Ainge was limping after practice b
