Wenger Wants Players Fit Whilst Ribery Slips Away 2007-05-15 15:26:08 Arsenal medical staff need to pick up their game
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
has spoken about his desire to get all of his players fit in the lead-up to next season. The club has been severely hampered by persistent injuries to Thierry Henry, Robin van Persie, Tomas Rosicky, Fredrik Ljungberg and William Gallas amongst others. Wenger has stated that getting all his key men fit will be better than any transfer he could pull off and it hard not to argue with his point of view.
“If you look at the number of players who were not at Portsmouth and the quality of our performance, we have the right to be optimistic. I am looking [for new players], but I am also at the moment happy with the players I have and am also focused on developing the team I have. The biggest transfer I can make is to try to get everybody fit by the start of next season.”

Djourou as a midfielder? So crazy it might work! 2007-05-14 10:15:55 The latest musings of Spanish Fry
Well, well, well. Just when Arsenal fans thought that the season was petering out to a anti-climactic end, Arsene Wenger has thrown a spanner into the works. Whilst Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Portsmouth overnight was in effect a meaningless game for the Gunners, there is no doubt that the starting line-up put out by manager Arsene Wenger has given an insight into some of the ideas that are currently running through his football mind.
For those not aware of the Arsenal starting team it was as follows (4-1-3-1-1; R-L): Mart Poom, Justin Hoyte, Philipe Senderos, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy, Johan Djourou, Emmanuel Eboue, Cesc Fabregas, Alexandr Hleb, Abou Diaby, Julio Baptista.
There are two positional peculiarites with this Arsenal line-up; the use of Djourou as a holding midfielder and the use of Diaby as a support striker. For Wenger to move Djourou and Diaby into vastly different positions suggests that the manager is trialing the pair in t

UEFA Cup Place
Portsmouth’s brave bid for a UEFA Cup place came up short as referee Graham Poll, in his last Premiership match, disallowed a 68th-minute effort for offside when Niko Kranjcar’s shot appeared to go in off Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos.
Pompey huffed and puffed in search of a late winner but it was all in vain as a young Arsenal side dug in to earn a 0-0 draw.
Arsenal’s on-loan Brazilian striker Julio Baptista, who scored four goals in a Carling Cup match against Liverpool earlier this season, had enough chances to bury Portsmouth’s ambitions in the first half - but his 40th-minute penalty was spectacularly saved by David James.
Arsenal gave Pompey every opportunity to fulfil their European dreams by fielding an end-of-season side with Jens Lehmann, William Gallas, Gilberto, Tomas Rosicky and Emmanuel Adebayor to name but a few.

Wenger’s Statistics Sheds Light On Disappointing Season 2007-05-12 08:45:48 Portsmouth v Arsenal Match Preview
There has been a general feeling of late amongst Arsenal supporters of emptiness and boredom that would normally be attributed to being an Aston Villa or Everton fan. With the side having been left with nothing to play for in the past several weeks it really has felt like Arsenal are lodged somewhere in mid-table obscurity. In fact folks, they’re not, and a positive result on Sunday against Portsmouth could see Arsenal finish as high as third in Premiership. And, as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
has pointed out, things could be so much better if he could get rid of all the Blackburns, West Hams and Sheffield Uniteds of the league.
“If you make a table of the top 10 we are second, three points behind Man Utd. If you make a table of the top 20 we are 25 points behind the leader.”
In fact, if the table included just the top four clubs - Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal - things would be even better.

Arsenal’s Ghost Signings 2007-05-11 15:43:11 The latest musings of Spanish Fry
Looking solely at the results and performances from this season it would be easy to conclude that it is essential for Arsenal
to dip into the transfer market and make a number of big signings. What this conclusion doesn’t incorporate is the fact that - without spending a cent - Arsenal will be making a significant number of ghost signings in the summer. I of course refer to the players who have spent large amounts of the season injured and - should they return to fitness - will seem like new signings for the club. I thought it would be good to take a look at the players whose seasons have been severely hampered by injury and investigate the effect that their prospective returns could have on Arsenal’s 2007-2008 season.

I didn’t think that getting into all the transfer speculation was worth it today so I’ve chosen to focus a little bit more closely on the comments made by two of Arsenal
’s most important players with regards to the club’s chances of success next season.
Arsenal’s Dutch striker Robin van Persie has said that the time he has taken to reflect on his life has made him more determined and confident of success with Arsenal next season.
“I had a lot of time to think about things, such as how I see Arsenal, how Arsenal sees me, how I can improve. Those things you can really think about, but when you live day to day there is no time to stop and think about it. I want that feeling back, to celebrate a goal with the fans again. I cannot wait for that, it is my aim now.”

Arsenal Transfer Speculation - Latest Updates 2007-05-09 15:14:21 Who’s coming and who’s leaving?
With the English Premier League only one round away from completion, transfer rumours have inevitably begun to run rife around the Arsenal
Football Club this week. I thought it would be appropriate - before things get out of hand - to do a quick assessment of the probable futures of the players who are strongly tipped to be joining or leaving Arsenal in the summer.
Julio Baptista (Prediction - will sign on with Arsenal permanently)
There has been much criticism of ‘The Beast’ in his first on-loan season with the club. I am one of the few who actually wants Baptista to sign on for Arsenal as I believe he will find his feet in the Premiership if given enough time to adapt, a la Didier Drogba. All things considered, there is a fairly even chance of Baptista either leaving or staying, and much depends on the decisions made with regards to Jose Antonio Reyes. Although Baptista himself has previously remarked that he is strugglin Read more:Latest Updates
Chelsea to knock off Manchester United 2007-05-19 05:25:30 Henry sees success for Arsenal next season
I thought I would do a quick round-up of news before moving onto the important issue of tonight’s FA Cup Final between Manchester United
(boo!) and Chelsea
(boo!).
Firstly, Thierry Henry has commented on his disappointment with the previous season but believes that Arsenal have every chance to come back and win the title next time around.
“We’ve been here before and we’ve come out on top before. What comes around goes around. Manchester United
have won the Premiership this year but who would have said that they wouldn’t win it for three years in a row?”
I have to say that I agree with Henry - there were very few people who expected Manchester United to take the title off Chelsea before the start of last season and I see Arsenal in a very similar position. There are important players to come back from injury and perhaps more importantly, the side will be more used to playing at home at Emirates Stadium.

Alexander Hleb - The Indecisive Genius? 2007-05-17 15:56:18 The latest musings of Spanish Fry
Belarussian midfielder Alexandr Hleb has revealed that he is doing special exercises with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to improve his shooting ability. The news will be a great relief to Arsenal fans all over the world who have been continuously frustrated with Hleb’s reluctance to shoot when given the opportunity. Whilst it has appeared that Hleb’s problems have been down to a lack of confidence in front of goal he has put it down to a tendency to be unselfish.
“Often I get into shooting positions and then hear a team-mate calling for me to pass, maybe I need to be a bit more egotistical at times. It is something I have been working on. In training, the manager often gets me doing special exercise in which I am forced to finish the attack with a shot on goal.”

Baptista exit sparks more Arsenal transfer speculation 2007-05-24 20:01:22 Baptista to leave Arsenal
After an uneventful week at the Arsenal Football Club things have exploded into life with the news that the club will not be signing on-loan Brazilian forward Julio Baptista on a permanent deal. The chances of the club striking up a deal with Baptista were heavily reliant on whether Real Madrid decided to sign on-loan Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes on a permanent deal. The intention was for Arsenal to sell Reyes to Madrid and gain the services of Baptista for next season at a heavily reduced price. But with Reyes looking more and more likely to join Atletico Madrid over the summer, the decision was made by Arsenal to send Baptista back to Spain rather than pay in excess of €20 million to sign him at the club.
“Arsenal have told me they are not able to buy me and so all I can do is return to Real Madrid. I have enjoyed my season with Arsenal and in England. I adapted well. I didn’t play much at first but finished much better. The first ye Read more:Baptista

AC Milan get revenge whilst Adebayor & Bendtner sign new deals 2007-05-23 20:03:18 Inzaghi scores twice to defeat Liverpool
Italian striker Filippo Inzaghi scored two goals in the Champions League final to ensure that AC Milan
, not Liverpool, was crowned European Champions. Whilst I thought Liverpool performed quite well - especially in the first half - it was Milan’s defensive resilience that saw them through a tough encounter with the side that had overcome them in the final two years earlier. Many Liverpool supporters will no doubt feel hard done by with the manner in which their team conceded the first goal but Milan deserved the win based on their tactically astute - if not technically brilliant - performance.
To put the first goal that Inzaghi scored down as a fluke would be harsh on a player who thrives on situations like the one presented by Pirlo’s free-kick. The Milan striker’s run across the goalkeeper saw the ball deflect in off his chest but to be fair to Inzaghi - he was in the right place at the right time, just as he was late in Read more:Adebayor

Why Kaka will win the Champions League for AC Milan 2007-05-22 09:07:23 The latest musings of Spanish Fry
As there really isn’t too much going on in the world of Arsenal at the moment, I thought that I’d turn my attention to the ChampionsLeague
Final rematch between AC Milan
and Liverpool. Many Liverpool fans will be hoping that the heart their team showed in winning the 2005 final - after being 3-0 down at half-time the same opponent - will see them come away with victory over Milan again in Athens. If this is the case then I think they are in for a rude shock on Wednesday night.
The reason - they are facing AC Milan at a time when the Rossoneri’s star man, Kaka, is currently in the best form of his career. It would appear Rafa Benitez will be starting Argentine Javier Mascherano with the intention of stifling Kaka’s influence in much the same way that Gennaro Gattuso was used to mark Cristiano Ronaldo in Milan’s semi-final against Manchester United. Whilst this might look a good idea on paper the truth is that at this
Fabianski in, Poom out & Flamini almost out 2007-05-27 21:12:34 Flamini’s cup final disappointments
Mathieu Flamini has spoken about his disappointment at being consistently overlooked in cup finals by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. Flamini made his desire to leave the club public last month - citing a lack of first-team football as his main reason - and has now elaborated on those comments.
“In my first season at Arsenal, I played in all the matches in the FA Cup only to be left out of the team for the final. Last year, I played in every match in the Champions league but was left on the bench for the final. Then last season I played in a lot of the Carling Cup campaign but once more I didn’t play in the final. I was left in the stands and it was not easy to understand. The best and worst of Arsenal
’s 2006/2007 Season
It has been a little while coming and I decided to take slightly different slant on things than originally planned, but here is my review of Arsenal’s 2006/2007 season. The review will focus on some of the most memorable moments of Arsenal’s season with the intention of being a bit more entertaining than analytical. For a review more along those lines it is hard to go past the one provided by Arseblog and you can read that here. But in the meantime, enjoy some of the best (and worst) moments of the past season in this trip down memory lane.
Best Player: Gilberto Silva. The Brazilian has enjoyed one of his best seasons since joining the club. Took up the responsibility as captain as well as penalty taker in Thierry Henry’s absence and did not disappoint, scoring 10 goals altogether. Improved his passing and an increased presence in the middle gave Cesc Fabregas licence to roam.

Aliadiere leaving Arsenal 2007-06-02 18:01:36 Middlesbrough to sign Aliadiere at second attempt
It seems that Arsenal
’s French striker Jeremie Aliadiere will be playing for Middlesbrough next season after both clubs have reached an agreement to trade him. Middlesbrough have always been keen on the young player and attempted to buy Aliadiere midway through last season, but Arsene Wenger blocked the transfer when Robin van Persie broke his foot against Manchester United - leaving the club short of attacking options.
Aliadiere’s career at Arsenal has not been what many - including Wenger - thought it would be. He joined Arsenal at the age of 16 from the famous Clairefontaine football academy in France, following in the footsteps of Thierry Henry and Nicholas Anelka. Wenger has always been a fan of Aliadiere but the sad fact is that consistent injuries and a lack of quality in his performances when given the chance meant that he was never able to become a first-team regular.

Why Florent Malouda should be Arsenal's top transfer target 2007-05-31 19:43:08 The latest musings of Spanish Fry
Before kicking things off I also thought I’d alert your attention to a classic bit of blogging from Arseblog that sums up the feeling of ridiculousness surrounding summer transfer
s. You can find it here. Anyway, I’ll now turn to more serious matters.
As news has gone a little stale with regards to the Arsenal
Football Club I was fortunate enough to stumble upon an article by SoccerLens author Ahmed Bilal titled “How can Arsenal improve this summer?”. I was impressed with the the way that Ahmed provided a realistic and concise review of Arsenal’s season and singled out the one position that desperately needs an addition this summer; on the wing. In response to his article I thought I would give my thoughts about who should provide this addition.
The player is Lyon’s Florent Malouda who - for those unaware - is a left-sided (but very two-footed) winger just recently voted Player of the Season in Ligue 1 in 20
The new white Arsenal away kit 2007-06-05 04:27:09 Before getting on to the issue of the kit you can read my latest article about the Thierry Henry-Samuel Eto’o saga here. It should put some perspective on the situation and convince you that Henry will not be leaving Arsenal
this summer. Apart from that there’s not too much going on in the world of Arsenal.
There is one piece of news though; it seems that Arsenal will be playing in a white away kit next season. There has been a lot of speculation about the possibility of Arsenal playing in white and it would seem the proof is finally here (thanks to Arseblog for the photo).
I personally think that overall the kit doesn’t look too bad. However, the shirts do look very Tottenham and I can’t see too many Arsenal supporters forking out their hard-earned cash to get one.
There is another issue - that the photo could be a fake. You can never be certain about things like this and it wouldn’t surprise me if someone had whipped this together from an old
Henry-Eto’o saga finally over? 2007-06-03 20:50:07 Henry and Eto’o going nowhere
It seems that - finally - common sense has prevailed in the Henry-Eto’o transfer saga. For all but those supporters who have been living in Antarctica for the past few weeks you will know that every dodgy newspaper under the sun (including, ironically, The Sun) has reported that Thierry Henry wants to leave Arsenal and Barcelona are trying to cut a deal involving Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o to sign him. Obviously, I’m not the only one who is getting sick and tired of this speculation.
The basis of these reports come from an interview that Henry gave whilst on a promotional tour to Beijing in which he made the following comments:
“Since I started playing football, there’s been speculation about me going to a lot of clubs so that will never stop. As I said last week, for now I’m an Arsenal player.”

Arsenal Transfer Speculation - Latest Update 2007-06-06 20:08:55 My Malouda dream about to come true?
I’m not one to normally get excited or be convinced by speculative news involving player transfers but Arsenal
News Review and even the ever-reliable Arseblog seem to think there is a genuine chance that Lyon’s Florent Malouda could be joining Arsenal in the summer.
The media has consistently stated that Liverpool are the club most likely to sign the French left-sided midfielder but it now seems that Arsenal are best placed to acquire Malouda’s services. Regular readers will know that I see Malouda as the best possible signing for Arsenal given the current circumstances at the club for a number of reasons.
If the link with Malouda proves to be correct and he is signed it will provide another example of Arsenal making a signing away from the media spotlight. I am obviously very interested to see how this situation pans out.

Wenger makes promises to Arsenal 2007-06-10 23:50:00 Wenger to stay on next season
Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger has responded to speculation about his Arsenal future by saying that he is committed to the club and will see out his current contract with Arsenal.
“I have a contract for one more year here and I will complete that contract. I have never broken a contract in my entire career and I will not break a contract now. So I can tell you categorically that I will be at the club next season. And next summer I will sit down with the board and see.”
With the likes of Cesc Fabregas saying that his future is intimately connected with manager Wenger these comments will no doubt be a relief for many Arsenal supporters. What Wenger is ultimately saying is that he will see out his current contract - which finishes at the end of next season - and work out with the board whether they want to keep him on for future years. Which player would you want at Arsenal? 2007-06-09 23:25:12 Samuel Eto’o? Florent Malouda? Daniel Alves?
There is absolutely nothing going on in the world of Arsenal

As for me, I’ve spent most of the week working on an article outlining my Arsenal Team of the Decade. It should be ready in the next day or two so stay tuned.
