Disturbed: myTunes music critic raises 'Turetzky Syndrome' alert Busy world traveler Hank Shiffman programs his globe-trotting with an eclectic mix of audio from the iTunes Music Store. Hank posts brief, spikey and highly readable reviews of his selections on myTunes — an iTunes blog. What's the strangest thing you ever knitted? Theresa hosts a brand new and super-nice podcast called Knitting Time Together. "I had some questions answered by Angel," Theresa says. "In response to the question, 'What's the strangest thing you ever crocheted?' Her response was a stuffed penis.'"

Big Phil's Love Parade: More Ken Tur-zetz-ky and 'If They Found Me Dead'
2007-05-10 06:27:39
Big Phil's Love Parade , Episodes 79 and 80 Dates: April 28 and May 5, 2007 Full episodes: NRA Theatre and The Music Show, Part 2 Summary: There's an aphorism in show business — maybe you've heard it — that reads: I don't care what you say about me, just make sure you mangle my name! Big Phil of Big Phil's Love Parade and I have this thing going on. See, Phil plays one of my songs, or just plugs my Web site, and in the process, gleefully identifies me as Ken Tur-zetz-ky. Phil's got zetz! He really hammers on that zetz-ky, too. Hits the syllable hard. You've gotta admire the guy for his passion. In fact, I was just about to go with Hank Shiffman's "Turetzky Syndrome" idea as sort of a brand identification, but now I'm seriously thinking about "Tur-zetz-ky." Show 79: Phil graciously acknowledges a note from me: "I received a really nice e-mail from Ken...I know I mangled his name; I apologize but I'm still not sure. I don't know the actua

Minor Technicality: 'My Fat Ass Itches'
2007-05-07 20:35:44
Minor Technicality, Episode 28 Date: April 29, 2007 Full episode: Growing up with too much music Summary: Neil Dixon's all over the shrinking Cadbury creme egg and coffee bar patrons who insist on ordering a "Large" when the menu clearly indicates "Massimo" as the preferred choice. But that's why God made podcasts, so those of us who are bugged by stuff will have a place to "Vente." Neil concludes his coffee rant with a little My Fat Ass Itches, struggles mightily with "Turetzky" (I'm assembling a greatest hits collection of famous mispronunciations) and generously declares my song "a great blues track which I can't play on 212Blues." Stones too straight for the blues But neither will the Rolling Stones make it into 212Blues, one of three podcasts the prolific Neil produces in England, along with Minor Technicality and the domestic Short & Fuzzy. Neil is also creator of BritCaster.com, a compendium of British podcasts. And if you're ever in England, or even if you're som

Knitting Time Together: 'Morris The Cat'
2007-05-07 03:20:47
Knitting Time Together, Episode 4 Date: April 25, 2007 Full episode: From Norway To Tacoma Summary: I'm glad I have at least one nice song around to offer to nice podcasts such as Theresa's fledgling Knitting Time Together. This week, Theresa played The Ballad Of Morris The Cat as a tribute to her undersupervised pet Franky, who somehow survived a shocking incident where he stuck his head inside a bottle. "This is The Ballad of Morris The Cat, by Ken Tur-zee-ky?" Theresa offers, contributing yet another novel pronunciation of my last name to the expanding list. No batteries required But there's also a nice interview about knitting and embroidery from Norway with a lady named Gloria, who lives in the nursing home where Theresa helps out as a volunteer. Did I mention how nice of a podcast this was? Next, Theresa reads letters from fans of the show. "I had some questions answered by Angel," she says. The Mad Music Show: 'Don't Really Matter'
2007-05-03 19:32:00
The Mad Music Show, Episode 75 Date: April 22, 2007 Full episode: Politically In-Correct Summary: Wayne Ross had a nice little Dr. Demento fan site going — that is, until Dr. D's tough love forced Wayne to forge a new comedy music path. Citing proprietary reasons, Dr. Demento and his terrestrial radio and Internet broadcast partners asked Wayne to remove a comprehensive Demento show archive from thedrdementoshow.com, the site Wayne founded in January 2005. A pirate is born But from the ashes rose the Mad Music Archive, featuring the Mad Music Show with Cap'n Wayne. The two-hour weekly program provides an additional shot of Dementia for old and new fans of the original. Sign up for a free membership to download the podcast. Last week, Wayne closed the second segment of his Politically In-Correct program with my own caustic ballad, Don't Really Matter. Disturbed: myTunes music critic raises 'Turetzky Syndrome' alert

Busy world traveler Hank Shiffman programs his globe-trotting with an eclectic mix of audio from the iTunes Music Store. Not satisfied simply to share his observations with the guy in 22F, Hank posts brief, spikey and highly readable reviews of his selections on myTunes — an iTunes blog. This week, myTunes takes on my comedy music EP, Look What I Made! In just a few paragraphs, Hank captures my id, drops a Tom Lehrer reference and tags me with an obvious but irresistible nickname. Hank sez: I'm guessing Ken Turetzky doesn't get invited to many debutante balls. From his album cover, with the little girl proudly holding up (what he claims is fake) poo, to a set of track names that promise your baser delights, we aren't looking at Dallas's upper crust here. Even a superficially upbeat title like Today Was a Very Good Day, with its faux Cat Stevens vocals and cheery tone, delivers a message that would be out of place during National Brotherhood Week. 2007-04-22 09:23:15
Schnauzer Logic , Episode 51 Date: April 12, 2007 Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 51 Summary: Mort Sahl is the cool, cerebral comic, a man whose brand of social and poltical commentary only went out of style when Americans decided they'd rather shop at the mall than question authority. It's a wonder a guy like that was ever in style. "You're right about the line shifting," Sahl told Schnauzer Logic host Robin Goldstein. "It'll get closer until you won't be able to say anything, and you'll forget what you believed in. Because you're afraid of getting your throat cut." He recounted "the great American disclaimer — my opinions are not necessarily my own." Opinions just get people in trouble Or better to have no opinions at all. Witness a frightened Rich Little, the sacrificial entertainer at Saturday's White House Correspondents Dinner, serving up crude Osama jokes along with the flop sweat. "Is the President laughing?" Little asked rhetorically. Sah

Schnauzer Logic , Episode 49 Date: March 29, 2007 Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 49 Summary: Host Robin Goldstein is back after three weeks off to rest her surgically repaired brain, and I'm called in to consult on my own recent experiences with the health care system. Today we learn that CT scans are freakin' hilarious! But what the heck, we're all Jews here, or we've all at least had the sniffles at one time or another. Doctors are our favorite topic. And then the laughter died Before the fun gets out of hand, though, entertainment reporter Jason Nathanson joins the conversation from Hollywood to dissect some casualties from the TV networks' spring schedules. Andy Richter, anyone? But soon we're back on familiar ground. Should John Edwards quit his presidential campaign and stay home to nurse wife Elizabeth, who's been diagnosed with cancer? Does Katie Couric have a nose for news, or is she even all that cute any more? When did the laughter die at CBS? Finally,

Big Phil's Love Parade: 'Her Shit Don't Stink'
2007-04-20 02:53:07
Big Phil's Love Parade , Show 107 Date: April 5, 2007. Full episode: Show 76: I Stink , Therefore I Am Summary: Big Phil's in the bathroom this week, making moist, airy sounds while "The Morning Poop" drones in the background, ostensibly dissecting the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Her Shit Don't Stink has never been so embarrassed by its surroundings. Whatever would inspire a program host to abuse my tender love song in such a manner? Surely not the title. Thankfully, Big Phil refrains from blasting another wet one until the last note fades. He follows up with a theme-appropriate melody from from Lynn Julian, If Farts Were Made of Super Ball Stuff. Finally, a noticeably mellow Phil stumbles over the credits: "We heard from Ken Turzetzky...." He'll be here all week, folks. Listen:   (0:45).

Snark Infested Waters: 'If They Found Me Dead'
2007-04-19 02:05:16
Snark Infested Waters , Show 107 Date: April 3, 2007 Full episode: J. David Baker, creator of RSTC Summary: Taylor Kent is comfortable with his faith and tempers Snark Infested Waters' religious message with a healthy irreverence. Or maybe that's just his cynical plan to convert the unbelievers. But I'm hooked. Where do I sign up to meet Jesus? This edition marks a satisfying return to the podcast, which featured The Ballad Of Morris The Cat on January 11 as part of Episode 107. Telephone guest J. David Baker, director of Reserve Spy Training Corps, consumes most of the program. He's seeking a mainstream audience for his "Christian Spy Thriller," and good luck with that. Then: "We're gonna close with a great song by Ken Turetz," Kent says, introducing If They Found Me Dead and shortening my last name to two syllables. I've always considered the number, which closes my EP, to be an appropriate exit tune. This Snarky guy really gets my stuff. Listen:   (0:43)

Manic Mondays: 'Today Was A Very Good Day'
2007-04-17 23:45:05
Manic Mondays , Some New Music Previews Date: February 19, 2007 Full episode: Manic Mondays, Episode 96 Summary: What did Monday ever do to hurt anybody? Should Monday take crap because some people don't like going back to work on Monday? I suppose I should learn to empathize, though. If I had a job, I might not appreciate Mondays, either. Actually, I did have a job once, but I didn't like it very much. You couldn't pay me to get another job, that's how much I didn't like it! He's a comic musician and a podcaster! Nevertheless, here's an interesting fact: Among the scattered Dr. Demento-spawned Web radio shows and podcasts, Tom Rockwell's Manic Mondays is the rare program whose host is himself an accomplished Demento artist. The genial Rockwell is front man for Sudden Death, a comedy hip-hop band featured more than 50 times on the Dr. Demento Show. New Stern Show Network site feeds Howard dialogue
2007-03-08 06:45:46
The Howard Stern Show's rallying cry on uncensored Sirius Satellite Radio is "No more bullshit." Meanwhile, the fledgling Stern Show Network declares "No more censorship." Yet the claim is made not in defiance of FCC censorship or meddling terrestrial radio executives, but in challenge to a rival bulletin board's perceived suppression of critical debate concerning their mutual hero. Is free speech really worth all of this trouble? Dueling fan sites TSSN founder Mike (aka That Computer Dude) touts the new board as "a site for the fans, by the fans." He preaches tolerance for divergent points of view while providing capacity for 2,000 simultaneous visitors. (Some 641 people had signed up as of late March 7.) In contrast, Stern Fan Network lists more than 122,000 members — as well as a reputation for stifling those who dare to criticize the Stern show. With both a title and mission statement uncomfortably similar to SFN's (italics added) "For fans, by fans: We pic

Portrait captures the true pain behind comedy music genius
2007-02-20 07:06:55
Without pain, we would have no art for audiences to examine, internalize, claim as inspiration or blithely reject. And I suppose if one factor separates my comedy music from the artistically disposable Demento crowd at one extreme and the scatologically unconstrained Howard Stern scene at the other, it would be my painfully ironic view of love and romance. That's the way I would paint my self-portrait, anyway. Besides, it's easier to paint a heart than an outsized ego. But don't take my word for it. Artist-musician Steve van Gelder (former frontman for the bands Joe Fool and The Karolinas) has affirmed my wounded lover's status with the portrait Love Hurts, hit of the El Corazon art exhibition, continuing through February 24 at Dallas' Bath House Cultural Center. The reviews are in Here's what Jesus Chairez had to say about the acrylic-on-wood work at dallasnews.com: The exhibit is filled with heart interpretations, pieces that bring back nice memories of present love, but

Schnauzer Logic: The Gamma Knife of love
2007-02-19 08:19:43
Schnauzer Logic , Episode 46 Date: February 14, 2007 Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 46 Summary: It's Valentine's Day, and following tradition, Schnauzer Logic's Robin Diane Goldstein marks the occasion by previewing her upcoming brain surgery, two days hence. (Editor's note: "The radiation never came anywhere near a vital organ," Robin reports following the event. "The (operation) took about six hours, including the scaffolding and drywall, x-rays and Homeland Security check and the actual Gamma Knife procedure.") It ain't rocket science Fortunately, the only vital organ of concern for me this bitter holiday season was a broken heart. Accordingly, I shared a particularly offensive story about my neurotic ex-girlfriend with the giddy panel of regulars, including Sheri Stevens, Sean Meehan and Parviz Fathali. This week, we talked sex, romance, comedy music and journalism, the pursuit of art at the expense of financial stability and other topics that create the show des

AC Podcast , Vocal mixing and tape stop effect with pitch shifting Date: February 14, 2007 Full episode: AC Podcast, Episode 50 Summary: Chris Hambly hosts the AC Sound Engineering Podcast from the UK, and I highly recommend this program for all home recording enthusiasts who prefer their tutorials delivered in a decisively British brogue. Still, even when you can't understand what anyone is saying, you can tell they're having a really good time! Throughout the show, Chris and his chatty guests provide examples of various techniques to improve the music they record in living rooms, bedrooms, basements and occasionally, an actual studio. There's nothing like the surreal thing The lesson plan also happens to include some of the finest examples of podsafe music available. Chris included Her Shit Don't Stink on this week's playlist, to show the kids how it's really done. Tyrone Kahn keeps the faith with more Demented music
2007-02-08 06:16:55
Someday I'll ask Dr. Demento whether he's heartened or bedeviled by the corps of eccentric Internet radio hosts he's inspired to carry forth the flickering flame of funny music. Uber-geeky by nature, they're nevertheless devoted to Dementia and the like-minded artists who have found a welcoming audience on the Web and in the nerd network of sci-fi and comic book conventions. David Tanny of DFSX Comedy Radio is one such host, programming 24 hours of comedy songs on his Live 365 channel. While David prefers a tamer, family-friendly brand of Demented music (and in fact banned Her Shit Don't Stink from DFSX), he championed My Fat Ass Itches and other songs before I ever cracked Dr. Demento's playlist. Milk, cookies and 'Morris The Cat'
2007-02-06 02:39:09
Random Fandom, Celts, Cowboy Songs and Comedy Date: February 2, 2007 Full episode: Random Fandom, Show 21 Summary: First chance I get, I'm heading over to Baby Boomin' Mama Laurie's and her daughter Joanna's house for milk and cookies. They're so sweet, I'm certain the pair started the Random Fandom podcast just to share another fun family activity, delivered "almost live from Corpus Christi, Texas, on the Nueces Bay." Random Fandom featured The Ballad Of Morris The Cat on a rare all-music podcast, although I can't help wondering if my song might have better fit the previous week's topic: The Cat's Meow. Meanwhile, you can't go wrong with Laurie's dictum: "Don't let your brain work too hard. It's not all about that." Good advice, Mom. Who wants a tired brain? Listen:   (0:54).

Schnauzer Logic: Happy Fuckin' Anniversary
2007-02-06 02:38:36
Schnauzer Logic , Episode 44 Date: February 1, 2007 Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 44 Summary: Schnauzer Logic celebrated its first anniversary on February 1, and in typical insecure faux celebrity fashion, I dropped a very special greeting in host Robin Diane Goldstein's voice mailbox. "We love Ken Turetzky. He's the half-brother from the other mother we never knew we had," Robin said in response, providing the affirmation I so desperately need. Just say no to regressive radio Robin has been considering an offer to share the podcast with her former radio home, KSCO in Santa Cruz, Calif. I've advised against the move on the grounds that my trademark phrase, "cocksucker motherfucker!", would be bleeped on FCC-patrolled terrestrial radio. Schnauzer Logic, in fact, with more than 1,000 weekly listeners, is more successful than many local radio programs. Given the choice of timid, ad-polluted "free" radio or free-flowing, uncensored, grown-up podcast conversation, I cont

Artiesondrugs.com intervenes to save Stern funnyman
2007-01-30 07:01:18
Loveable trans-fat freak Artie Lange, a cast member on the Howard Stern Show for the past five years, has ruefully noted his flirtation with intoxicating substances, among them Jack Daniel's, cocaine, pancakes and more recently, heroin. The Horse is a comedy rock god's pedigree. But fans fear that Lange is emulating his hero and lookalike, John Belushi, who died in 1982 of a heroin overdose at the age of 33. Now, purely in the spirit of altruism, a Stern show fan named Russ has created ArtiesOnDrugs.com in order to "track all the signs that Artie Lange's on drugs." Through the site, Russ hopes to enlist the efforts of Stern's army of loyal listeners and obsessive kibbitzers (see Welcome, Robinswrong.com) to preserve the life of this vital entertainer. "With everyone's combined efforts," Russ says, "we can make a difference."

Welcome, Robinswrong.com
2007-01-24 00:26:48
Robinswrong.com is shaping up as one of the brightest new lights in online journalism, with its relentless examination of the gaffes served up by Howard Stern sidekick and occasional newsbutcher Robin Ophelia Quivers. Thanks for visiting my blog, Robinswrong readers. For the past nine months or so, I've used this site to deliver irreverent original songs and stories of my own adventures in the comedy music biz. Take a minute to check out Her Shit Don't Stink, recently featured on the Red Peters Comedy Music Show on Sirius Radio Howard 101. My song was part of Red's year-end countdown program, now embroiled in a controversy over alleged vote fraud! Another of my melodies, the comedy blues My Fat Ass Itches, highlighted broadcast radio legend Dr. Demento's Funny Five and continues as a popular entry on the Podsafe Music Network. More recently, Dr. D introduced The Ballad of Morris The Cat to comedy audiences. I'm also widely heard as a guest on popular podcasts, including Schnau

Snark Infested Waters: 'Morris' is still dead
2007-01-20 23:03:25
Snark Infested Waters , Show 107 Date: January 11, 2007. Full episode: Ancient Sorceries and ILAM FTCLC #6 Summary: "I am pleased to report that Jesus is alive and well and poised to return at any moment," Taylor Kent says, with a level of irony I am not yet prepared to measure, as introduction to his Snark Infested Waters podcast. Morris The Cat, on the other hand, is still dead, but nevertheless finds a place on Kent's program. My song closes the show, following a couple of old radio mysteries. The second episode, an I Love A Mystery presentation of "The Fear That Creeps Like A Cat," apparently inspired Kent's selection of my song, available via the Podsafe Music Network. Otherwise, I have no idea how Morris fits in with radio mystery serials, or the host's metaphorical residence on "the island of Misfit Christians," or his byword, "Where Faith, Art and Life Collide." "We're going to close with a great song by Ken Turetzky," Kent says. "And as always, if you don't know J

Hyper Nonsense: Sirius Radio voting scandal!
2007-01-13 09:03:12
Hyper Nonsense , Episode 56 Date: January 12, 2007. Full episode: Too shy to party Summary: This week, Shawno tells a long and pitiable story about how he brought a meat-and-cheese platter to a party and believed that everyone was laughing at him. But the mood brightens considerably when, fireside chat-style, Shawno reads an extended excerpt from my memorable blog entry, Diebold, Sirius declare fini to countdown show fiasco. In a note of podcast brotherhood, he strongly backs the Turetzky team. Jen closes with an episode of As the type moves, in which she mockingly reads from some other poor schmuck's Live Journal: Sometimes I think that it's not necessarily you that I miss, but the feeling I had when I was around you…You don't understand how long I've waited for, well, you — or someone like you… I've prayed for someone who would make me feel less alone. Schnauzer Logic: 'Mistakes have been made'
2007-01-13 05:56:00
Schnauzer Logic , Episode 41 Date: January 11, 2006 Full episode: Schnauzer Logic, Episode 41 Summary: "Where mistakes have been made…," suggests our President, substituting a blank-faced expression of inscrutability for his more familiar used-war-salesman squint. But as institutions of any sort, White House included, revile the burden of "responsibility," the questionable Red Peters Comedy Music Show Top 16 poll on Sirius Radio's Howard Stern/Howard 101 Channel continues to evade serious scrutiny. If it were a serious subject, I suppose I'd be more concerned about the hacked vote. But despite my efforts to tamp down the controversy, Schnauzer Logic host Robin Goldstein continues to fan the flames. (How's that for disingenuous political posturing?) "It turns out there was fraud involved!" said Robin, who rigged up her own PowerBook to smack the ballot 100 times for Her Shit Don't Stink. "The way that I was voting, you were sure to win." But that's why I like to preten
