Mac is up for Adoption
2007-04-17 00:22:01
Mac came to us as an owner surrender as his family could not give him the time and attention he really deserved. He is an adult, neutered male smooth-coated Collie. If you’ve always wanted a collie, but were not sure about the long coats, maybe you’d consider a smooth-coated collie instead! Mac is house trained, and has been using a dog door at his foster home. He is extremely sweet and smart! He knows a number of basic commands, including sit, and he immediately comes when called and he is good on-leash. And he LOVES to go for walks! He has his own bed, blankets, food bowls and leashes that will go with him to his new home. He is great with kids and cats (kids he sits quietly by and gazes adoringly at while they pet him; cats he simply ignores completely). He is good w/ other dogs, has happily lived with his 3 Schipperkes foster mates. He would love to have another dog companion in his new home. Like most collies, he is somewhat vocal - likes to talk to you and tell

Utah Collie Rescue, Inc., now has an official bank account. Today we applied for an account with a local Credit Union and it went though. We are pleased to say that we can now take checks and donations written to Utah Collie Rescue, Inc.! We are also moving along very well with our Non-Profit status, thanks to a wonderful accountant who is helping us out with all the paperwork. Hopefully we can send in the application within the next couple of weeks. At that time, any donations given to us can be counted as an official donation starting on the date we file our application! Exciting news!

New Logo - New Look
2007-03-13 17:03:44
Utah Collie Rescue is pleased to release our official new website. We have a new logo, and a new look! We also have many ways you can help support our cause. The logo was provided by a fabulous artist at Image Maker Gifts. Isn’t it amazing! We are very pleased with it, and soon we will be putting the logo on T-Shirts and other accessories where you can buy them and support Utah Collie Rescue. We also now are a member of I-Give, a wonderful store where you can purchase items from your favorite online vendor, and have a portion of the sale go to Utah Collie Rescue. We sometimes have items for sale on e-Bay, so please check out the e-Bay link as well. We are an Amazon Affiliate, too. So we hope you will considering purchasing books through UCR when you are looking at Amazon books. We also have google ads. Each time you click on an ad you are interested in, we get some monetary help! (If you see an inappropriate add, such as a puppy mill, please let us know as we can remove that.)

Jewel is Home
2007-03-13 16:56:51
Utah Collie Rescue is very happy to say that Jewel has found her new home. She is living with a wonderful couple in Roy, and has two new kitty friends. We all hope she is doing well with the cats, as we know she was always a bit excited in her foster home when the cats were around. But she is a smart girl, and learns quick! Jewel has a new name, too. Her new name is Sadie. Good luck to her!

Cheyenne is Home
2007-02-14 22:59:28
Well, Cheyenne is settling into his new home. Yay for Cheyenne. He is getting along okay with the ducks and the cat, and his new family loves him very much. His foster Mom misses him very much, but is also happy that he is doing well and has a new forever-family!

About Cheyenne
2007-02-05 04:12:25
It appears Cheyenne may be going to a new home tomorrow. In case he does and it works out, I want to write down some notes about him so that I will always remember his quirks. He is a doll, and he’s going to a home that can give him more attention and time than we can. I will miss him, though. He has become my baby boy, and he always will be my baby boy. Cheyenne came to stay with us the last week of August 2006. He was matted and thin and sad. He was found by a lady who mostly does cat rescue. He had gotten himself stuck in a neighbors yard. The lady found him in the yard and was able to catch him, even though he was very afraid. In order to do what was best for him, she took him to the shelter to see if he would be claimed. He was not claimed after three days. The lady who found him asked for help from Sheltie Rescue of Utah, and they could not let our amazing Cheyenne be put down. So they pulled him from the shelter. His left front leg was broken, and his teeth were in a

Cheyenne is a rough blue merle boy. He was found wandering the streets of Salt Lake City and saved by a wonderful person who mainly rescues cats. He was turned over to the shelter for three days, but when no one claimed him Sheltie Rescue of Utah came to his aid. He is a snuggle bug and a joy to have around!

Sam Needs a Home
2007-05-17 15:39:28
Sammy is a very sweet, loving, wonderful, big rough collie boy. Sable and white, he’s soft and shiny. He loves to go for walks, and he’s great with kids. He’s not too good with cats so needs to go to a non-cat home. He is big, might be about 100 pounds, we’ll get him weighed at the vet when we get him a microchip next week. He’s up on Petfinder so we can find him a great forever home. Sam came from a family who could no longer keep him because they had too many dogs, and they had another human baby on the way. So Sammy is staying in collie rescue for a while until he finds another home. He may want to be top dog, but so far he seems sweet and very able to settle into his place. We’ll see how he is in his foster home for the next while. Would you like to adopt Sam? If so, let us know! collierescue@utahdogs.com

Sammy
2007-06-03 17:34:04
Sammy is a rough sable collie boy up for adoption. He is such a sweetie. He’ll talk to you, but he’ll be quiet if you insist. He loves to go for walks. He’s very mellow. He can easily sleep all day if you are at work, and he would also love to go for a daily walk. He is fully house trained. He’s great with kids. He’s not too good with cats so needs to go to a non-cat home. He is a big boy and weighed in at 99 at the vet when we took him in for a microchip. And he’s not fat, he’s just big! But don’t let his size deter you. He’s every bit as loving as any other sized collie, small or big! He may want to be top dog, but he is sweet and very able to settle into his place. Would you like to adopt Sam? If so, let us know! collierescue@utahdogs.com

We are the Bridge
2007-06-20 08:52:31
Lora from It’s a Dog’s Life posted this as a comment, and I thought it was so good it really should be a main post. It is true. I am a bridge for these rescue dogs. I love having them in my life, if even for a short time. I am the bridge Between what was and what can be. I am the pathway to a new life I am made of mush, Because my heart melted when I saw you, Matted and sore, limping, depressed, Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love. For one little time you are mine. I will feed you with my own hand I will love you with my whole heart. I will make you whole. I am made of steel. Because when the time comes, When you are well, and sleek When your eyes shine And your tail wags with joy Then comes the hard part. I will let you go – not without a tear, But without a regret. For you are safe forever – A new dog needs me now. ~ Diane Morgan

Mac Update
2007-06-29 10:22:50
Well, Mac is in a home. He is in a home with a family and another dog that has epilepsy. So far, so good… he’s been there almost a week now. We were concerned that the other dog may not do so good with another dog, with his epilepsy, but since we haven’t heard anything bad yet we are thinking things are going well! So yippie for Mac!

July Fireworks
2007-07-04 10:57:44
Well, it’s July. Here in Utah we not only have the 4th of July fireworks, we also have the 24th of July fireworks which is the State of Utah holiday. Our dogs don’t much like the fireworks. We actually have resorted to medication for one of our collies as she pants and paces during the fireworks. The medication helps her be calm and sleep. So just a quick reminder, keep all your animals indoor, dogs and cats, make sure they are safe. They could have the tendency to run off in fear, which would just be worse for everyone involved. Keep doors closed so everyone stays safe!

Collies and PR
2007-07-09 16:58:42
What is PR you may ask? PR is short for Positive Reinforcement. Positive Reinforcement training is sweeping the country, and it’s been a long time in coming, too. Instead of painful leash pops, ear pinches, hitting or slapping, Positive Reinforcement is focused entirely on getting a dog to do what you what in a positive, happy, playful way. This type of training is much more pleasant for both the dog and the trainer. One excellent way to do this type of training is to incorporate clicker training into your repertoire of training skills. Clicker training is very precise, and it marks exactly what you want to do, when the dog does it. Dogs sometimes get confused when you reward a behavior if you are not very precise as to what you are rewarding. Clicker training allows you to ‘mark’, with the clicker, the exact thing the dog is doing. And that click signals the dog that the behavior is what is desired, and that they will get a treat only a second or two thereafter.

Pet Adoption Portal
2007-07-07 21:12:41
In order to get all of our collies on as many rescue sites as possible, we use the Pet Adoption Portal . Have you ever heard of it? It’s wonderful. It allows us to input our information for our dogs up for adoption in one place, and then the Pet Adoption Portal uploads the dogs’ information to Pets911, Petfinder, and SaveAPet. It’s a great time saver. Here are some screen captures of it, but they don’t do it justice. If you are a rescue group, and need a place to upload all your animals for adoption and make it easy, check them out! Not only do they allow dogs and cats, but also rabbits and a number of other animals, too. You can upload your images, and you can put in a description. You can mark animals as up for adoption, on hold, adopted, or other options as well. And the best part? It’s free, of course. Us rescues need all the free help we can get!

Mac and Sammy
2007-07-07 20:56:22
Well, it’s been a few weeks now since both Mac and Sammy have been in their new homes. We’ve only gotten good news so far! So it looks like it is really working out. We got these two boys within a few days of each other. They were both owner surrenders. They were both sable males. Though Mac was a smooth, and Sammy was a rough. And they both went to homes within the same week. It is quiet in our house now. Actually, we have a one week foster, Faith, a white pit bull who is a complete doll. So it’s not completely quiet here. But with only the four regular dogs it does seem quiet. And there’s not much poop top pick up as when we have six or seven dogs! You may seem more posts in this blog in the next while. If you have suggestions as what topics would be good, please let us know. You also may see an ad or two here and there. If you do, remember all proceeds go to collie rescue!

Dogs, Veggies, and Links
2007-07-11 12:07:34
I’d like to get more traffic for this blog, more information about collies, more feedback, and to do so we are joining up with this link chain. So…. UCR is gonna say, carrots! They are great training treats, too! —————Copy and paste below this line—————— There are all kinds of fruits and veggies that are good for us dogs, right? Well, let’s make a list! And get some link love in the process. Instructions: 1.) Copy and paste the matrix of “Fruits/Veggies LinkLove” below, courtesy of Johann The Dog! 2.) Substitute the Host Tag and one of the “Fruits/Veggies” in the matrix with the name of the fruit or veggie and URL of your blog. 3.) Be sure that the fruit or veggie that you list is REALLY safe for dogs. Do your research, K? 4.) When you get a ping back from someone that has your link in one of their “Fruits/Veggies”, practice good paw by copying his/her Host Tag&rsq

Young Collies vs Older Collies
2007-07-16 12:46:16
Have you considered adopting an older collie, instead of a puppy? Puppies are fun, they are small, cute, snuggly, goofy and clumsy. They also are not house trained, and may chew up teak outdoor furniture, and anything else they can get their teeth on. The older dogs are such a joy to adopt. They often have years left of wonder and life to give. They need homes as much, if not more, than the younger dogs do. Usually they are mellow and easy going. They appreciate their new forever homes, and give every bit of themselves to their new families. If you are considering adopting a dog, please consider adopting an older dog. I love getting in the older dogs to foster. They are actually my favorite, now. The puppies are fun, but staying up all night, house training, chewing and crying are difficult things to deal with. The older dogs sleep all night, are house trained, don’t usually chew, and will love you forever.

Collies are Versatile
2007-07-15 16:07:08
Collies are an amazing breed. They are quick learners, and built to work. If you are considering a collie to adopt, or if you have a collie and would like to do more with her, just think of all the wonderful things you can do with your new friend. Collies do agility, and are great at it. They are not the fastest agility dogs, but they are usually steady and reliable. And they have fun and learn quick. Collies do herding, and are great herders. Being a herding breed, they are good on sheep, ducks, and cattle. Each dog is, of course, unique and individual, and finding training that fits you and your dog is very important. Collies are great at obedience. From novice through utility, they love to learn and have fun with their people. Collies can do flyball. They might not be as fast as some other breeds, but with training and encouragement, they can have a great time and do a good job! With collies, you can get some IBM memory, but your collie might just remember for you! What things

Collies and Collars
2007-07-18 18:38:29
I recently helped rehome a friend’s sweet smooth collie boy into a new home. I think he’s going to be super happy there, get a lot of attention, and maybe even get to do some Rally-O. I hope so. He already knows most of the stations and just needs to be trained off leash a bit. His new family wants a new collar for him, and a friend of mine recommended a martingale. What kind of collar do you use for your collie? A collies’ head is generally more narrow than his neck. Which means any type of collar can just slip off over his head. One type of collar that is really good for a collie who has learned the slipping-the-collar trick is a martingale. If you Google Martingale Collar, you’ll find a bunch of examples. I would post some here but there are too many. There are some gorgeous ones. You might want to Google Martingale Collar Greyhound, as sight hounds often wear them. Even the small Italian Greyhounds wear them, and these dogs are nice and little and you

Growing Web Directory

If you are interested in finding animal sites, or if you want to get your animal site listed in a directory, there’s a new one over on Tip Tail. It’s the Tails Directory , and though it’s new and there’s not much there yet, it’ll be growing soon. There is a whole section for animal rescue sites, so check it out! And if you do you won’t have to pull your hair out looking for good sites, and then need hair transplant Florida!

Collies in Agility
2007-07-19 20:50:07
If you go to an agility trial you may not see very many collies competing. There are a number of them across the country, but they seem to be spread very thin. Only at collie nationals will you see a lot of collies having a lot of fun doing agility. The herding breeds are great at agility, and collies are no exception. They are fast learners and they can clear jumps 24 to 26 inches high, depending on the height of your collie and the venue you are competing in. Going over jumps, through tunnels, onto contact obstacles, collies can do them all. Collies may not be as fast as Border Collies or Australian Shepherds, but they have just as much fun, and are just as much fun to run. So if you have a collie and you are looking for something fun to do with her, consider agility! Find yourself a positive trainer in your area and I bet you will have a ton of fun! You could try Ping Golf when you want to do something without your dog, and you can try agility for something to do with your dog!

Collies and Shoes
2007-07-23 14:38:32
Well no, collies don’t need shoes. Okay, unless their feet are tender or need protection, then you can get dog booties for them. I’m actually posting about what type of shoes you wear when you are exercising your collie. Either jogging, hiking, doing agility, biking, or just going for a walk. Shoes are important. And when you are looking at shoes, you might want to consider the Air Jordan. Look around and do some price comparisons, and find out what type of shoe is best for your activity. There are so many now, it’s good to be informed!

Feeding your Collies
2007-07-23 10:16:26
What do you feed your collies? And your other dogs? Do you feed kibble, cooked, or raw food? What is best? Do you need bernedes cookware to cook for them? There are a great deal of choices out there when it comes to feeding your collies. We have read a great deal of information on dog foods and raw feeding, and Utah Collie Rescue whole-heartedly supports raw feeding. If you have questions on why, or what we recommend, please leave a comment. Do your homework on kibble, if you chose to feed it. There are good brands, and there are awful brands. We will not go into detail here about which we prefer, but if you are concerned drop us a line and we’ll chat with you!
