Not Just a ‘Foster’
2007-11-06 12:18:32
Just was looking through old pictures of all the rescue dogs we have had through our house. And I had to write that these dogs, every single last one of them, are not ‘Just a Foster Dog’. Instead, they became, for much too short a time, a part of our lives and our home and our hearts. We have gotten to know each of them intimately, and each of them are individual, amazing, beautiful spirits. They are all unique, they all have a story to tell, and they all took a piece of my heart with them when they went to their forever homes. But as I keep having chunks of my heart taken away, for some reason, with each bit that goes, I am more full, and more whole. And I feel as though I am living in love.

Bianca is on her way home
2007-11-10 10:45:02
Well, Bianca is on her way to her new home in Fruitland, Idaho. *sigh* We miss her already. She brought such a wonderful brilliance to our home. She just had this sweet, loving internal glow that we will miss. And yet, we are richer for having had her in our lives for only two months. I plan on going up to do some agility and visiting her next March. Of course I hope it all works out, but Bianca is such a sweet, mellow loving girl that I think all will be fine. She gives off very good relaxing calming dog signals. Tatum is walking around, maybe wondering where Bianca is. I know Tatum will adjust, and I hope Chase, our border collie, will pick it up and play with Tatum. But Tatum will always have me, and I do want to be her main play mate so maybe this will be good for us both. Bianca will be living in some luxury homes… because you know, every home with a dog is a luxury home!

Getting Fewer
2007-11-09 15:12:58
Well, doesn’t look like I can jinx it now, but I still do worry. Bianca is set to go to her new home tomorrow morning. The weather should be good for the drive. I seriously am going to miss this girl. I’ll have to go to an agility trial up in Boise next summer to visit her. I definitely plan on it. I have to get her bag ready today… Tony liked to steal her toys out of her bag so I had to put them away. And treats, and everything else in there. Tony doesn’t chew toys up, but he does like to carry them around and he gets to excited when he gets a new toy. With my ankle out of commission for a while I haven’t been exercising the dogs, or myself, as much as I should. Maybe some exercise equipment would help us all.. doggie treadmill anyone?

Brushing Tony
2007-11-17 22:49:33
Well it seems as though Tony doesn’t like to be brushed. He is okay with it, I mean, he barks at us when we do it. He much prefers when I feed him treats and my husband brushes him. He gets a bit snarky sometimes and show me his teeth, but I tell him to just quit it and he does. He’s a big pushover. And then I go more gentle because I am probably actually hurting him and he’s letting me know he doesn’t want to be hurt, which is a good thing. He is blowing his summer coat and once we get him all brushed out he’ll feel much better. We do it in small increments so he doesn’t have to put up with us for too long a time. He’s getting much prettier and much better! He is such a doll. We love having this boy around. Utah Collie Rescue, Inc. does have their own checking accounts, so as to keep all our monies in order. So if you want to donate (and we are 501c3 tax deductable) you can write a check to Utah Collie Rescue, Inc.!

Limiting Rescue
2007-11-15 15:42:15
Due to some personal circumstances, unexpected, that have come up in the last month we are going to have to severely limit the collies we are able to foster in our own home. Fortunately for us here in Utah, there are not very many locally that end up in rescue. Hopefully we can rely on our friend rescues to help get any collies that we do find in shelters, into foster homes. The more foster homes we have, the more we can do. We have a couple of potential foster homes coming online soon and that should help out. And we are seriously looking for a foster for Tony, as having him in another home where he can get the attention he needs, would also help us out a great deal. So if you are interested in fostering a collie, or a sheltie for our friends at sheltie rescue, please let us know! collierescue@utahdogs.com

Squeaky Clean
2007-11-15 10:09:07
Oh boy you should see Tony’s Teeth! They are so white and pretty now. And he didn’t have to have any extractions, so that was great. He was groggy all yesterday evening, the poor boy. But he got loves and attention. He didn’t want to eat much dinner either, but he did eat a full breakfast. He is doing so well. He only whined on the way home from the vet because he was still excited to be in the car. And Tatum got to come with to pick him up. Tatum and I went to Home Depot too for a few minutes, made her nervous but she did really well. Tony’s ears are also clean and in good shape. They said they were a bit mucky but nothing bad was stuck in there! I’m glad Tony is happy and healthy.

Memorabilia
2007-11-15 09:17:40
Though I didn’t find any memorabilia for any of the Lassie shows on this site, I did find some Star Trek. I’m a trekkie, though I am a collie person first and foremost, of course. But I do love TV and movies. And if you do too, you might want to check out Millionaire Memorabilia . They have lots of framed photos, even many with signatures, from the popular TV shows and movies from the past. This particular image has signatures from William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Who are, as you know, Captain Kirk and Spock. I loved Star Trek as a kid and even do so as an adult, and a piece like this in my home would be wonderful to have. They also have sports Memorabilia including baseball, basket ball, and football. Oscar Nominees that have been signed by the actor or actress. Are you interested in sports? Sci Fi? Awards? Musical Artists? Yup they have musicians as well. They have a very big variety if things you can find that would interest you. So if you want to spruce

Tony’s Teeth
2007-11-14 12:45:29
Well Tony is finally in for his teeth cleaning today. With only 5 dogs here it is quiet, in a good way. Tatum is starting to fit in with our regular 4 quite nicely and is playing and having a good time with Chase. Tony’s liver is fine and temperature is gone. I hope his teeth are okay and he doesn’t have to get any pulled. But if he does then I hope he feels much better! If he does, no tennis balls or golf balls to play with for a while, but he does prefer the soft stuffy toys anyway.

Dogs on the Bed
2007-11-23 09:49:17
Well I got a new bed a couple of days ago. New mattress, new frame, and I just love it! And I actually dug the feather bed (down comforter) out of storage and put it on, too. I usually don’t use it because I’m afraid of it getting chewed up. Anyway, the dogs thought that was the bees knees, the new bed and the soft comfy feather bed. They all wanted to snuggle in. I had to invite Tony up, as he is the collie that doesn’t jump up on the furniture. Which is really nice. Most of our rescue collies tend to just jump up on the furniture and couches and things, most likely because our regular dogs do, too. So the feather bed is put away during the day to keep it safe. And at night I can really enjoy it! Breakfast was short today, I fed them kibble… which makes the mornings go faster. And I do throw in some nutritional supplements too, to keep them all healthy. After breakfast they all settle back down for a work day.

Collie Rescue Lens
2007-12-04 10:03:49
Okay getting into the mood of Squidoo, I also started a Collie Rescue Lens. I am not very savvy with Squidoo yet, so be patient as it is built up over time and includes more information. I don’t think I can possibly list all the collie rescue websites around the country, though, because there are so many. Oh, but I think I forgot the Collie Rescue Foundation, I better get a link to them up soon! I have not been on the internet much in the last three days, been busy with dog training and work. Hopefully I’ll get some time to catch up tomorrow. Anyway check out the lens if you like!

‘Tis the Season
2007-12-01 14:22:47
Well, it’s finally December. Have you gotten all your Christmas shopping done yet? I am almost done with mine, just something for my nephew and husband and it’s all wrapped up. Today is a very cold winter day here in Utah. We have had such a dry spell, having it snow like crazy outside is wonderful. It’s time for a nice fire in the fireplace and a glass of wine in hand. A consideration for a great Christmas present is the wine of the month club. What a great idea. I want to get one of these subscriptions for my parents… hrm, maybe my Dad. The wine is delivered to the persons door every month. They offer California wines, and they are America’s leading wine club. I love a nice Cabernet when it’s snowing out. These guys have different plans you can choose from which will fit the person you are giving it too just perfectly. And, as they say, it’s the gift that keeps giving… or keeps coming, every month of the year. And if you refe

Collies in Dog Sports
2007-11-30 11:36:47
Do you do dog sports with your collies? If so, we’d love to hear a comment from you. What do you do? Where do you go? Agility, obedience, herding, tracking, carting…? Collies are so versatile they can do so many things. Though we do have to keep the ginsu knives away from them, because they are very curious! I am starting a Squidoo Lens on Collie Sports . If you are interested come check it out. It’s brand new and doesn’t have much on it yet, but any and all input is welcome! Collie Sports Lens

Collies and the Cold
2007-11-30 11:07:07
I don’t know about other collies, but our collies love the cold weather. Not to stay out in it too long, mind, but they love to go out and play in the snow. We recently had some snow.. not much, but enough to freeze the ground and cover the grass. And Tatum just loves going out and hopping around like a bunny rabbit. She was even getting Tony to play with her the other day, and Tony is not really a big player. Tatum even likes to go chew her bones in the snow. I try to bring her in, as she doesn’t have the thickest coat in the world, being a smooth. But still, she likes it out there! I prefer staying inside, and would much prefer being in a Hawaii bed and breakfast where it’s nice and warm!

Tired Collies
2007-11-25 21:29:05
Collies are pretty amazing in that they can range so widly in energy level. Our collies are a great example of this. Lucy, who is our pack Marm, is fairly low in energy. She likes to stay home and chew bones and lay on the couch. She does like short walks but she has a limp we have never been able to get rid of, so she doesn’t like to go very far. She has always been fairly low energy. Tatum is the opposite end of the spectrum. She keeps up with our border collie and could use a treadmill to burn off a bunch of her energy. Tonight she is very tired, though, as we were out for about 5 hours today doing do training and socialization. She is sleeping peacefully in her dog bed. Levi is in the middle, he likes the couch, but he likes to go out and do agility, too. Tony is, I think, also in the middle. He’s happy if he gets to snooze most of the day, but he is also happy if he gets to go on fun walks.

Helping a Springer
2007-12-12 15:26:51
Well we were able to, briefly, help out a Springer Spaniel today. There was a mixup with her foster home and so she came to stay with us for a couple of hours. What a complete doll. So very cute. I do love springers! She was afraid, though, and when she went in her crate.. and if I reached in to try to pet her or get her out, she would growl at me and reach forward like she wanted to bite. But she was gentle, really, and I don’t think she would have hurt me. She needs a lot of confidence building. She went to her regular foster home already, so we didn’t have her for very long. But I do love meeting new dogs and getting to know them, even if it’s just a little bit. I helped transport a Springer down to Nevada in October, too, that was fun. Sweet girl she was. On my way to the lasvegas hotel, I was able to get to know here a little!

Tony is Doing So Well
2007-12-10 20:57:49
Tony is our only rescue dog left from Houston. He is doing so amazingly well. When he first came to stay with us he was very attention starved. And he was nervous, too, he would mount the dog beds in order to comfort himself. I am happy to say that he hasn’t done that in about a month now. And he doesn’t need as much attention as he did, either. He does still bark some, but he responds really well when I tell him to stop, and sometimes I put my hand on his muzzle, gently, and he does moan a bit but he stops barking. He is such a wonderful, loving boy. He is not as pretty as the other collies we have had. But he is just as sweet and loving and has the heart and soul of the collie. We hope he will find his forever home soon. Though of course he is welcome to stay with us for as long as it takes. We would just love to see him get more attention than he does at our house with all the dogs we have. And he would really love to go on more walks, even in the cold! He doesn&rsqu

Warm or Cold?
2007-12-09 19:34:01
Do your collies like the warm weather better or the cold weather? Ours love the cold weather. Angel will go out and stand in the cold for an hour.. and we worry about her and usually bring her in. She doesn’t like the rain, but she does like the snow. Though when the temperatures drop to below 20 degrees, or even to the single digits, they start staying inside more. I don’t blame them, I don’t like it that cold either. There’s no growing wedding flowers or any other kind of flowers outside at this time of year. So when it gets cold please make sure your dogs, collies or not, have a warm place to sleep and stay during the day, and fresh food and water at all times. The collies are a part of our families and need to stay inside with their families.

Collie Christmas
2007-12-07 14:37:57
Well it’s going to be a fun collie Christmas at our house this year. Even Chase, our pretend collie (he’s border collie doesn’t that count?) will have a great time. We have our tree up, and it is dog safe. Too many Christmas decorations can be dangerous for dogs. We have no glass ornaments on the tree, no lights. We hope to put some lights around the windows so they show outside. But we are too lazy to climb up on the roof and put lights up outside this year. All of our fragile items are out of dog reach. And all our holiday candy too. We don’t want our dogs to get sick! So have a very Collie Christmas! And don’t dress your collie up in too many baby clothes!

Sweet Tony
2007-12-19 17:08:23
Ahh Tony is such a sweet boy. I was able to snap a couple of pictures of him sitting by the Christmas tree. The tree is pretty bare, since it’s dog safe this year, but it’s the Christmas spirit. Tony so loves his toys. I need to get a picture of him with a toy. Sometimes he and Levi both want the same toy, and we have to watch them. But Levi is a bit of a grouch when it comes to toys sometimes. Tony is very sweet! I’ve been looking at Caribbean cruises lately… and you know, it’d be fun to go on a dog cruise!

Server Oops
2007-12-18 21:25:23
Well, this site may have been down for the better part of today. It seems my host is upgrading to PHP5, from PHP4. And so there were some errors, and the old site displayed for a while, but now we are back and doing well! And, our house is full of dog beds. I bought some new ones recently because the colors were discontinued and they were on sale. I got a new cat bed for the cats, and they are in heaven. They are soft and comfy and warm. And warm is great right now in this cold weather. The dogs like their new beds, too. Two of them fit into their wire crates and they are very cozy in there!

Sleepy Collies
2007-12-16 14:41:32
The collies were all up and playing this morning. Fortunately they were mostly outside. It’s cold out, was 22 degrees when I looked at the temperature this morning. That is cold. It could be colder though, and has been here in Utah. Fortunately we stay warm in our house, and we keep warm in our car when we go out too. We have good auto accessories in the car to keep us warm and cozy too. The dogs all have nice warm beds to sleep on, and when we go out we make sure they are all warm. Our thinner coated dogs have coats. The border collie has the thinnest coat of all, and no undercoat, so he needs his jacket the most of all. It’s a clear blue sky today, which can make it even colder around here.

Merry Collie Christmas
2007-12-25 17:14:21
We here at Utah Collie Rescue just want to wish everyone, human, collie and other, a very Merry Christmas . We hope Santa brings the dogs get lots of bones and pig ears, and fun suffy toys to pull the stuffing out of. And we hope Santa brings the humans lots of chocolate and techie tooys and Danze fauctes to fix up their kitchens with. Most of all, we hope the rescue dogs will all find homes and be loved, and have soft warm beds to sleep on. Today we are taking it easy and all the collies are chewing on rawhide bones and playing in the snow. Merry Collie Christmas everyone!

Please Rescue
2007-12-22 21:45:29
And after you enjoy wearing the new gold chain you got for Christmas, and if you do get a dog next year, after the excitement and energy of Christmas has calmed down a little, we do, of course, ask that you will rescue instead of buying a puppy. Rescue dogs come in all sorts, shapes, sizes and types. There are purebreds as well as mixed breeds in rescue. Visiting a shelter, Humane Society, or rescue would do our world a large portion of good. As it will the animal that desperately needs a home!

Christmas Collies
2007-12-22 21:41:40
Well it’s two days until Christmas . Do you have all your Christmas shopping done, gotten that stereo cabinet for your loved one who is into music? Finished up all the wrapping? Are you planning on getting, or have you gotten, a dog or cat as a Christmas present? Well, we advise against giving animals of any kind, dogs or cats or turtles or fish even, as Christmas presents. While some are very responsible and do their research, and will acquire a companion animal and be able to support and care for the animal in a responsible way, too many people will, unfortunately, get a dog or cat without truly knowing the responsibility, time, and effort involved. So if planning on getting an animal, please wait until after Christmas, and take your time to find which would be best for your house and your family.

Collies and Cancer

Unfortunately, all dogs can be victim to cancer anymore, not only collies. All breeds.. I don’t know, I don’t think, there are certain breeds more prone than others. We are pretty sure our blue smooth girl, Lucy, has cancer. She has spots on her lungs in the xrays they took today. She is [...]
