Collie Activity Level
2007-07-28 11:26:05
Are you looking for a highly active dog? Or maybe a couch potato dog that doesn’t like to do much but lay on the couch all day? Are you looking at a collie? What activiy level do collies have? Collie s are not couch potato dogs. They like their activity. Of course they are not border collies and do not really like to go all day long, they do like their down time. But for the most part collies enjoy being active. They like to herd, hike, camp, go for walks, and other fun activities. So if you are looking for a collie, you’ll want to consider the collie’s activity level before you adopt. If you think you need some Miracle burn for yourself, maybe getting up and walking would be better!

Collies and Crates
2007-07-27 11:54:00
Are your collies, and other dogs, crate trained? Crate training is an awesome thing for both dogs and us humans. Dogs are den animals, and they like a small, comfortable place they can be safe in. Crates are just the thing. Crates are not a punishment, they are not cruel, they are actually a kindness to your dog and your dog would love you if you crate train him. Of course you have to introduce the crate slowly and make it pleasent. Feed your dog in the crate, throw toys in the crate, and make it a fun place. You can close the door and leave the dog in the crate for very short periods of time at first, maybe a minute or two. Then work your way up. Crates help house training puppies, help nervous dogs be calm in storms, and confine dogs too excited when guests come by, as well as many other things. They might even allow you some time to setup a wireless router so you can surf the web at home!

Houston Collie Rescue needs Help
2007-07-31 16:21:21
Houston Collie Rescue is in desparate need of help. As you can see from the below quote, they have gotten many collies from a seizure. They need foster homes and donations. We have offered to take a couple of the collies here, but transportation in the hot summer can be difficult. If you can help in any way please visit: Houston Collie Rescue From: Houston Collie Rescue By now some may be aware of the 51 collie seizure of dogs belonging to Elaine Kmiec from Tomball Texas. It is our understanding that ALL her dogs were seized and then voluntarily signed over to avoid prosecution. These animals have been tagged as Animal Planet, animal Cruelty investigations. We are posting what facts we currently know but they are ever changing. As of today HCR has been told that 41 of the collies will only be released to Houston Collie Rescue. It is believed the other 10 will be adopted out and their success stories will be followed and aired on Animal Planet. Houston knows the collies are about 5

Collie Mixes
2007-07-29 14:18:20
We are definitely not against taking in collie mixes to find homes for. We received a call from the Ogden Shelter yesterday about taking a collie mix girl. So hopefully we will be getting her tomorrow. Her name is Jessi and she is about 4 years old. We wish we could do more breeds, but limiting ourselves to collies helps us manage finances and things that we do have to manage, unfortunately. Finding foster homes is, of course, the most difficult thing. Most people who foster don’t really have fancy homes or use Outer Banks for design, but instead the dog homes are designed around the dogs.

Is Jessi a Collie Mix?
2007-08-01 21:19:00
We got this most wonderful girl in on Monday. We’ve already fallen in love with her, of course. Her name is Jessi and she is from the Ogden Shelter. If you click on her image you will see a bigger picture of her. I have been so busy I haven’t been able to get more pictures of her. My laptop died recently and we all know how long it takes to reset up a new laptop. Ugh. But anyway, Jessi was picked up as a stray, and her people came by… but then never came back with the funds to take her home. So the Odgen Shelter called us on Saturday to see if we could take her, as she was scheduled to be euthanized… ugh, today. We think she is more German Shepherd than collie. Her body shape reflects a shepherd. Her personality can be collie, though. She is sweet as a bug, loving, snuggles in bed with her foster Mom. She eats so slow her foster brothers and sisters want to take her food away, but foster Mom doesn’t let them. She is a bit skinny but we will fatten her

Video of Jessi
2007-08-05 20:45:06
I think it’s better to see a dog in motion along with pictures. So here is a short clip, about 40 seconds, of Jess in the backyard with her foster brothers and sisters. She is such a sweet bug.

Pictures of Jessi
2007-08-03 14:30:46
Here are some super cute pictures of Jessi. Do you think she is a collie mix? She went to the vet yesterday afternoon and had a good checkup. The vet pulled an awful, huge, weed out of her ear (what the weed is called escapes me at the moment). It looks like she is not spayed so she is getting spayed on August 20th. And she does have kennel cough. She has to get over the kennel cough before she can be spayed. Did you know there are 5 different things that can be kennel cough? Two are bacteria and three are viruses. The bordatella vaccination that is given out is for one of the bacterial types. There are no vaccinates for the other bacterial type or the three viruses. So even if your dog is vaccinated she could catch it. However, our keeper dogs don’t seem to be affected. But they are healthy and strong, get exercise and good raw food, so hopefully they just won’t pick it up. So what do you think, do you think Jessi is a collie mix? We are still not sure. The vet and th

Utah Collie Rescue Non-Profit Papers Sent!
2007-08-03 14:12:59
The wonderful accountant who has donated so much of her time and energy to us informed me today that she sent out the application to the IRS for our 501(c)(3) status! I am very excited indeed! So hopefully in 100 days or less we will officially be a non-profit organization. *Celebration!* So if we ever have too many dogs and need to move, we’ll have to contact a realtor to find us a better place to live!

Sonny Boy
2007-08-09 20:00:24
Meet Sonny ! Sonny is a sable rough collie who needs a new home. His family had to move away and couldn’t take him with. He is a sweet heart and settling in well, even after just a day. He likes to play fetch with a ball, and eat yummy food. Sonny is about seven years old, and full of spunk and life. He needs to go to the vet for a checkup, probably needs his teeth cleaned, and needs a good grooming. His coat is matted on his belly and underside, and is beyond my ability to groom out. So he’s going to have to take a trip to the groomer to fix him up and get him all pretty again. We don’t yet know much about Sonny and hopefully we will know more in a few days. We need to get his vet records to find out if he has been vaccinated recently. We’ll get him a heartworm test to make sure he is negative, and start him on medications. He is getting along great with our other pack. Jessi, our other foster, is doing really well with him. He does want to be a bit dominan

Sonny is Healthy
2007-08-14 17:38:15
Sonny’s vet check went really well. He has some lumps on his underside that are just fatty, so that is good. His skin is a little raw so he’s on antibiotics for a week. His teeth need to be cleaned, their next cleaning wasn’t until the end of September, so bummer we have to wait. Sonny got to come with to the Sheltie Rescue house to get a microchip, then we stopped by a corn and watermelon stand to get some of those. Then we went to PetCo, too, for a new collar and some other various things. He had a great time going for a ride and visiting all these places. He is now out of the crate at night at home, and during the day, too. He hasn’t marked in days, so we are pretty sure it was just a new dog thing. He is a happy guy who always seems to have a smile on his face. He’s now listed on Petfinder, too!

Current Update
2007-08-18 12:33:15
Our rescues, Jessi and Sonny, are doing very well. Jessi’s personality is really coming out. She has more energy now, and more confidence, and she is testing her environment which is a good thing. She has become our fastest eater, which is different than a few weeks ago when she was our slowest eater. She is at a good weight and her strength is building. She wants to play with the other dogs but doesn’t quite know how. We are pretty sure we have a home for her. Her potential family is on vacation until September, and when they get back they are going to come over and see if they want to finalize the adoption. Sonny is as sweet as a bug. His mounting is going away as he is settling into his place in the pack. He likes to sleep on the couch, and he loves to snuggle. He has not marked at all since the first day so he is settling in that way, too. He sleeps on the bed with me, snuggled up. He’s a silly, sweet collie boy just like all collie boys. I love collie boys!

Designs
2007-08-18 12:27:23
It took me a while to decide on what type of logo to get for Utah Collie Rescue. I looked around at many different places. We needed a logo, but I didn’t want to pay a lot for it. I wanted a nice professional graphic design that stood out and caught a person’s eye. I found someone who also does rescue who did this logo. But if you want to look around at various sites to find the best one for you, I would recommend it. Channel M Communications has in house designers with years of experience, so you might want to check them out if you are looking for graphic design. They are affordable, and they offer good communication with their customers. Good communication is vital because we, as customers, want to make sure we are getting what we want, including colors, text, and other information that are critical to our organization. They have a good, straightforward, process they follow to assess customer needs and determine what is best for the customer. In our day and age it

Bo Needs a Rescue
2007-08-15 15:34:44
This is Bo and he is a rough collie boy (with a haircut) up in Idaho. Hopefully we will be able to get him down to us in the next couple of weeks. Click this picture to see a bigger copy. Bo is what is called a Double Dilute. Some collies come with the merle gene, and this gene is what causes the blue merle color. If you breed two blue merle collies together, you can potentially get an offspring that has two copies of this merle gene. When you do, the puppy can often be born blind or deaf, or both. Sometimes they are born with no eyes at all. Bo is a double dilute. He is deaf in both ears and he is blind in one eye. He is a special needs boy that will need a great home. He is still in Idaho right now, but after we get him down here we will be putting him up for adoption. If anyone is interested in a very special boy, please let us know.

Paintings of your Rescues
2007-08-15 15:30:38
I have a painting of my three smooth blue collies, and I love it. I love pet paintings. I would love to find someplace that would help us out with a fund raiser for collie paintings. And so this website will take your photograph and turn it into a painting for you. They have many examples of pet paintings that they have already done, including this one of these two sweet looking dogs. They offer paintings in Oil, Charcoal, Pastel, Pencil and Watercolor for wonderful, fun, expressionist effect. I especially like their watercolors, very creative and full of life. They can combine images from multiple photographs into one painting, so if you have two photos and you just can’t decided between the two, you can have them both on one canvas. Their website is easy to use, and they have a great FAQ that answers many of the questions you probably have. Their website is easy to navigate and understand. And you can view the painting before you buy, to make sure it is exactly what yo

Assessments
2007-08-20 15:55:44
Well, Jessi is getting spayed today. We have had to reassess her behavior due to some issues that have come up in the last couple of days, so she is no longer for adoption until we work these out. She will come home today a bit groggy, but doing well, I’m sure. No worries with her, it does take a dog a month or so for her true personality to come out, and so we are making sure all is well. Sonny is sleeping next to me on the couch as I type this. It’s a quite day here at Collie Rescue. Maybe a pulse oximeter would spice things up.

Hoping for Collies
2007-08-25 15:54:07
We are still arranging to get three, maybe even four, collies from Houston. Looks like the flight date might change for when they come to Aspen. Which would be great. I’ll be at dog camp in Lake Tahoe with my two boys the first week of September, so if they came after I get back, I could just drive over and pick them up! We have a great rescue network, for sure, but people get busy and things come up. Just like dog camp! Fortunately we have very little home furniture that dogs can get into in our house. We are very dog proofed here.

Sonny Likes to Chew
2007-08-24 21:04:27
Sonny was chewing a bully stick tonight and I had to snap some pictures. He is such an amazing dog. Patient, loving, likes attention, great on walks.. we took him and Jessi for a walk tonight, too. They do great and have so much fun. When we got home it was some chewing fun. Sonny’s people who had him before must miss him terribly. He follows me from room to room, he snuggles up with me on the couch, and he is always gentle and sweet. He has never shown one hint of any type of aggression, and puts up with his grooming like a trooper. If I was able to keep another collie, Sonny would be one I would love to keep. He would even be great at a California bed and breakfast as a greeter dog. When my husband and I went to Maine on our honeymoon, there was a very sweet golden mix that stayed at the Bed and Breakfast there… and every day I got a little bit of dog fix from her, since we had to leave our pack home.

Collies with Pet Samaritan
2007-08-24 16:59:16
If you are interested in a collie other than one of the ones we have, there are a couple of collies with Pet Samaritan fund that need homes, and we encourage you to check them out! There is Maxine a rough tricolor girl, and Perry a very cute rough sable boy. They are coming from Vernal, Utah, and need to find new homes!

Collie Rescue Foundation, Inc.
2007-08-24 14:41:57
Collies all over the USA need help finding homes. There is a wonderful, new, organization out there which is helping collies, and collie rescues, when they need aid. It’s called the Collie Rescue Foundation . Utah Collie Rescue has not yet joined up, but we are planning to do so soon and will be contacting them to find out what we need to do. So check out the Collie Rescue Foundation website for more information!

Houston Exteriors
2007-08-23 17:44:28
Speaking of Houston … I hear it is pretty hot down there, and humid…? Or is it dry? I am not sure. It’s dry here in Utah so the heat is easier to tolerate. How big is Houston? There is a company that does Houston siding and exteriors on homes that you may want to check out if you are in Houston. They also do window replacement, siding and exterior painting. I am always looking for a new home that would be better organized for more dogs, rescue dogs, and all types of dogs. Inside and outside. Our house is brick, but I fear that if we had an earthquake the whole house would crumble on top of us. I’d like to get a house that is more reinforced.

Collies from Houston
2007-08-23 17:38:56
Well it is looking good. Looks like we might be getting three smooth collies from the Houston Collie Rescue effort from about a month or so ago. Some collies are going to be flown into Aspen, Colorado, so the only thing we need to do is to find a way to transport these guys from Aspen to Salt Lake City, Utah. We already have a few options, and I’m excited. Of course I will be out of town starting September 1, for a week, but we have an awesome rescue community that can pitch in and help with these collies. I will post more news once I have it.

Price Comparisons
2007-08-23 14:24:09
Here at Utah Collie Rescue we are always looking for the best prices we can get. When we spend money on food or supplies or vet care for the collies. Sometimes we buy things online, but not very often. When we do, we like to find a comparison tool so that we can find the best price for what we need. And although our dogs don’t wear teen halloween costumes , you just never know when a kid is looking for something fun to wear for Halloween! Bizrate has more than just a teen halloween costume to look for. They have all sorts of categories and information where one can find the best price for the needed item. This is a sponsored post to help support Utah Collie Rescue

Sonny and Cats
2007-08-22 19:58:34
I tend to me more reserved about the collies we get into rescue than my husband does. I take things especially slowly when introduction the fosters to our regular pack. I usually crate for longer than my husband would like. And I take a long time introducing the dogs to our cats. My husband thinks Sonny will be fine with cats. I wasn’t sure so I put him up on Petfinder as no cats. However, I am changing my mind. We had our black cat out tonight with Sonny, and Sonny was sniffing her and watching her, but he made no move to even chase her, and after only a few minutes he was wandering around the basement ignoring her, and would have walked under our poker tables if we had any. So I think Sonny will be fine with cats in the home. I updated Petfinder to reflect this. This includes a picture of Sonny on our couch upstairs. He naturally jumps on the couch and lays down. His new home would be best if they could allow him to continue on the couch. He does no damage, and he can lay on

We Have a Time!
2007-08-29 16:24:48
Woo Hoo we have a time for the collies to come in on Saturday morning! 7am. My sister and my friend M are going to go pick them up. I might have to have another friend, too, if my sister’s jeep only fits one crate (it’s a fully enclosed jeep, not one of those desert ones) then I have another friend in the wings who is willing to help out. And we have foster homes, too. Tony is going to a friend I did flyball with. And Bianca and Hudson are going to go with my friend M for the week. Bianca and Hudson will probably come to stay with me when I get back from dog camp. Jessi should be gone by then so we’ll have room for them. And then Tatum will go with another friend who does sheltie/collie rescue. (Just a note, Tony has been in boarding, Bianca and Hudson have been in foster homes and they get along great with each other. I hope the nuns will adopt either Bianca or Tatum, and I hope the family who adopted Smokey from me will adopt Tony. They are very interested in

Jessi’s Tongue
2007-08-29 13:54:34
It’s just not often that I get a good photo of a dog with her tongue right on her face. This one was pure luck! Jessi is doing great in her foster pack. She is getting along and learning to play. We think she didn’t have other dogs where she came from, because she doesn’t seem to know good dog play etiquette. But she is learning and she is doing so well. She loves breakfast and dinner, now. She is good at waiting, though impatiently. It takes a while to feed six dogs, so she sits and fidgets and sometimes lets out a little woof. But she doesn’t’ jump on the counters and she waits when she is done to leave the kitchen. She is first finished, now, and she is not supposed to visit the other dogs when they are still eating. Her foster home is no Bellagio hotel, but it’s cozy and warm and safe and she gets a ball thrown for her every day, and good treats, too!

New Look
2007-08-29 13:39:02
UCR has a new look today! And as you click around the site you’ll see the image in the upper right change. There are only two images now, but as time goes by we’ll be adding more images with pictures of our success story collies. Also, all the pages don’t look so great with this new layout yet, but that’ll come in the next little while. Utah Collie Rescue is mainly a home based business, but we do have some volunteers around Utah. If you would like to volunteer please let us know. We need foster homes for the collies coming in from Houston on Saturday or Friday. Even if you could foster for only a short time, we would forever be grateful. We don’t have a foster application yet, but we are working on it. Please send an email to collie rescue and we will ask you some questions! Thanks!

The Collies are Coming!
2007-08-27 18:04:30
And it looks like it’s happening! We are getting four collies from Houston. Bianca and Tatum are girls, Bianca is about 7 and Tatum is about 2. We are also getting two boys, Hudson is about 4 and a smooth, and Tony is about 7 and a rough. Tony is the only rough we are getting. I love smoothies! We are having a bit of a problem finding foster homes, but I don’t think that is unusual. In rescue, the most important resource is foster homes. So they might have to be boarded for a week. Because, of course, I’m going out of town on September 1st, the day they are flying in. So until I get back they might have to wait. I do have one temporary foster home, and hopefully I’ll get a couple more, but we’ll see. Anyway, it’s working out. They were going to be flown to Aspen, Colorado, but looks like the pilot who is donating his time and his plane, will be able to make a stop in Salt Lake. Yay! We have such an amazing network of collie rescue people in

Going to the Airport
2007-08-31 10:33:13
I managed to arrange my schedule so that I can get to the airport Saturday morning to meet the dogs and the people from Houston. I’m excited. My sister is going to drive to my house and follow me out to the airport. It’ll be early, 6:45 am. I want to get there at least 30 minutes early. So I will be getting up early and heading out. I can’t transport any of the dogs, my car will be packed for travel and I’ll have Chase and Levi with me, but I can be there and meet everyone. Also, I just got a call from someone interested in adopting Hudson. Very nice family. So I have people interested in three of the dogs already. Of course it could end up that none of them work out. And it could end up that all of them work out. My collie rescue people will be able to do home checks and get paperwork filled out while I am gone. If Hudson is in a home by the time I get back I would be thrilled! But as everyone knows in rescue, an adoption is never complete until the

Scanners!
2007-08-30 08:30:32
I am excited, yesterday in the mail we got a couple of microchip scanners! They might get stuck on collars or cufflinks, but they will help out a lot. And they were donated free, too, to Utah Collie Rescue. They are international scanners so they will be able to pick up all types. I scanned all six of our dogs we currently have, and found them all. Sonny’s chip has moved a bit, but that’s okay, as long as it is still there. This is a huge help, now if we pick up dogs off the street we can find out, right away, if they have a microchip. We don’t do that often, but sometimes. About a month ago we picked up a couple of Dalmatians taking a walk down a fairly busy road. We opened the door of the car and they jumped right in! That was rare. They had tags and were sweet as bugs, so we were able to take them right home. Their people were very grateful. Anyway, we are happy to have microchip scanners!

Hudson
2007-09-23 21:12:29
Hudson is an amazing boy. He is a very handsome and sweet smooth sable. He was in a foster home in Houston for eight months, with a person who fell in love with him and had a hard time turning him over to us here in Utah. And I can understand why. Hudson was very frightened and worried when he first went into rescue. When he came to stay with us he was still a bit shy, but he is really coming out of his shell. He does like his crate, and his laundry basket. His crate door is always open, but if wants to, and feels safer in there, he does go in. Most of the time I find him on the couch, though, like in this picture. Hudson loves to play with Tatum and Bianca. He likes to chew on bully sticks, too. When people come over to our house, he does still like to retreat to his safe crate, but he comes out again very quickly when they have gone. And we are having our visitors give him lots of good treats so they know he is safe with them too. We adore Hudson and we are looking forward to pl
