‘Pet Owners’ or ‘Guardians’?
2007-05-16 03:08:21
The Poodle and Dog Blog has a post about whether we should call our animals pets or not. I thought, instead of commenting there, I should post here, since the subject is closely related to this blog, and is actually a subject I have an opinion on (often I just don’t care about things, but this one I do!) Anyway, if you notice, I hardly use the word ‘pet’ when I am talking about my dogs and cats. I will usually say companion animal. And although, yes, I did pay money and bought two of my dogs, and I paid money to adopt my other two dogs and both my cats, I don’t feel as though I ‘own’ them. I am their guardian. I don’t believe they are property. I believe they have rights above and beyond the rights of this couch I am sitting on. They are living, breathing beings, independent and unique. But then, I have a radical opinion of animals. I’m vegetarian, and so I don’t eat animals. And I hold the same attitude toward animals as Chi

Collies This Week
2007-05-16 00:08:13
Well, we may not be getting a collie tonight anyway. We’ll see. I’ll update this if we do get Skinny into our house and our rescue. We should be getting Sam tomorrow. I’ll post about him, too. I work from home tomorrow (Wed) so they should be able to drop him off anytime after around noon. Skinny will come, it just might be a day or two! They are both rough sable boys.

Life Stages
2007-05-15 22:20:18
Raising dogs is an expensive past time. So is rescue. So is being married and keeping a house. A house is definitely necessary for dogs, since rentals usually won’t allow them. And I can understand why, because too many people don’t treat rentals too well, and so the property can take a lot of repair to get back to normal. If you are young and single, or engaged or recently married, there is the utango rewards program that can help you out with your finances. I wish I qualified for the program. But I don’t. I’m too old, and too married. Been married for four years now. Yay! So I only just barely don’t qualify. If you join the uTango Rewards Program, it is absolutely free, so you don’t have to pay anything at all. When you becomme a member, you can earn cash back bonuses up to $200 annually, and lifetime payouts of up to $1 million. This program pays for member loyalty, like no other existing rewards program. And you can purchase items at nearly

Inline Ads

Okay.. in order to raise more money for the collies, I’ve incorporated Kontera ads into this site. You’ll see an underlined ad for certain key words. If they are annoying, please let me know and I can take them out. But if something interests you, please follow the link as you will be supporting collie rescue in Utah! If any puppy ads appear, I’ll be emailing Kontera to take them off. I do not support buying puppies, puppy mills, or any of the online puppy buying sites. Hrm.. I wonder what those terms, if any, will show up as ads?

Getting a Collie or Two
2007-05-15 19:16:01
Well, of course when it rains it pours. Looks like we will be getting a couple collies into rescue this week. Today I should be getting a rough sable boy named Skinny, from a lady being deployed to Iraq. He is about 5 years old. Tomorrow I’m getting an owner surrender rough sable boy named Sam who is 8 years old. Chase and Levi will be upset. I’m looking into a foster home for one of them. I hope my husband isn’t too upset. Dates and Topics
2007-05-15 14:21:43
Check out and get Free videos at GoFish.com. They are actually running a contest, too, where you can win a date with Mirelly Taylor. I love her name. She has been in the TV show NUMB3RS, which I enjoy and watch every Friday night. And I even record it if I’m not home. But I’m usually home on Friday nights, no dog training that night. If I were to win a date with a celebrity, I would want to talk to them about my favorite subject. Which is, of course, dogs. Mainly the dog overpopulation problem. Many celebs are very interested in the subject. Mirelly Taylor doesn’t have dogs, as far as I know, but she could be open to the topic anyway. Many celebrities are, and are a big help in reducing the number of dogs in shelters who are dying. Personally, the celebrity I would love to see on this contest is, of course, John Barrowman. He really is growing in popularity. He’s an amazing person in real life. He really seems to make people feel good about themselves. And h

Category for Each Dog
2007-05-15 01:21:49
Okay, I went and searched through all my old posts for posts about each dog. Mainly for a history of Chase’s training, and for Levi’s weave problems. Interesting posts. I kept saying that Chase was getting better in the trials, but then we reached a point where he got worse, and so I pulled him. I’ve never had a dog like him before. He is teaching me all sorts of things! So to read about each dog (some posts have more than one dog in them), click on the category of the dog! I better go feed them, it’s dinner time and Lucy is sitting next to me on the couch, pawing the laptop… and now she’s bringing me toys. Dinner Time!

Sammy is a Doll
2007-05-19 00:41:08
Yup, I just love Sam. He is a big goofy collie boy, typical. He wants to chase the cats, but they are in their safe room. Though Phoebe isn’t too crazy about not being able to go out when she wants to. Sammy is almost too big to fit through our dog door. But he manages. Now to teach him how on his own. He is a bit pushy, but really not any more than Lucy or Levi. Or even Chase. He doesn’t care that Levi growls at him, guarding things, Sam just ignores Levi. I’m going to give him a good brushing out… when I feel better. Woke up with some sort of stomach flu this morning. Gah. I hate this kind of sick. And I think we might be getting Mac, too. He’s being returned. His old foster Mom and I both think he is a great boy, and the situation was just not condusive to another dog. That’s okay, we’ll find him a great home, still.

Love Camping with the Dogs
2007-05-18 20:17:13
I love camping with the dogs. We haven’t gone this year, which is a bummer. Hopefully we’ll go in August. Been doing so much agility that I haven’t had a weekend off. And when I do, I swear, I get sick. Today it’s the stomach flu. Yuckola. Anyway, we own all our own camping gear. We used to have a tent, but now we have a popup trailer that we just love. But it can be expensive to own camping hear, especially when, like us this year, you don’t go all the time. It’d be cool to find camping and GPS rentals. One thing I would LOVE to rent is a dog GPS until. I have seen them advertised. Someday they will be tiny, injectable, and I’ll have them not only in my own dogs, but all the rescue dogs, too. Then some will probably want people to get them, but I won’t get into that, this is a dog blog! I love GPS units, I swear I’d get lost without ours. However, ours is old and black and white now, I’d love a new color GPS unit, for s

Chase & Levi at the Park
2007-05-18 01:02:23
Current Mood: HappyI took Chase and Levi, both, to flyball practice last night. I don’t usually bring Levi, but I thought I would since we have Sammy, now, the foster boy. And Levi and Chase are not crazy about foster dogs at all. Levi is better than Chase. Anyway, so some of us work obedience (casual obedience, not formal) with our dogs before class. And I threw a treat bag on the ground, and walked Chase around it. I must say, he was doing much better! His attention was staying on me a lot more than it was on Monday. I was pleased with that. So hopefully he’ll keep that up. Then flyball practice happened and I worked with Chase. Goodness does he love flyball. Running like a maniac, what could possibly be better? When they were mostly cleaning up I got Levi out (he was out earlier being a goofball, getting into treats), to see how he would do over the jumps. Well, he was great, of course, because he knows jumps from agility. So everyone told me (well, most everyone), th

Apparel For the Dog Person
2007-05-18 00:17:41
Okay, you know, I’m not too much into dressing up. Having five dogs at the house, probably six in a couple days, and babysitting one over memorial day, is going to be some work. Work of love, of course, but it doesn’t really give me any time to dress up. And I lost one of my ladybug earrings the other night, slept in it, which was silly I know. I could use some Tarina Tarantino Jewelry to fix me up. But mostly I end up wearing jeans, especially to my dog events. Or shorts, now that it’s summer. But my legs get scratched by those enthusiastic doggie claws. This post is sponsored! Pay Per Post. My Disclosure Page

Meet Sam
2007-05-17 15:32:56
Sam is a very big, very sweet, wonderful rough collie boy! I love him already. It’s so nice, actually, to have a healthy collie rescue in our home for once. Cheyenne was in such bad shape with his broken leg, bad teeth, and matted coat. And Jewel was also awful with her poor cut down coat because she’d been so matted, and had that bone stuck in her jaw. Both of them had been found as strays. Sam is an owner surrender. He’s 8 years old. They couldn’t keep him anymore because they are having human children. I’ve posted him on Petfinder. He seems to think he is a top dog, so we have to watch him with Lucy. Since he’s so big, he has to have manners, I really can’t move him around much. I bet he’s about 100 pounds. He towers over Levi, who is 24 inches at the shoulder and 65 lbs. But he is sweet and loving and very smart. He knows how to sit and shake, and we’ll see what else he knows. He was even starting to play with me this mor

Cooking for Me and Dogs
2007-05-16 20:02:21
I actually don’t cook for my dogs, they eat raw. Which is easier, I think, than cooking for them. But honestly, I hardly cook for myself, either. I’m always looking for new recipes to try. Usually low fat, or no fat, and preferably vegan. Always vegetarian. I don’t really cook for my husband, either. He gets mad at me that I spend so much time on the dogs’ food, and not on his. He cooks for me once in a while. I hate to cook, while he is good at it and enjoys it. So maybe I’ll give him some recipes! This post is sponsored! Pay Per Post. My Disclosure Page

Seven Random Facts: List meme.
2007-05-16 17:49:27
Okay, I’ve been tagged. Seven random facts about me. Well, I have a lot of random dog facts, LOL. Big Bucks Blogger tagged me. So I better get going on this! I have an AAS in Computer Science. I got my first dog, a lab / weimereiner mix, when I was 8 years old. Her name was Jackie. I will be 40 years old this month on the 26th. I have a sun tattoo on my left ankle and I want more tattoos! Just need to find some good tattoo designs. I love superhero movies. I had a rabbit when I was a kid, her name was Jingles. I also had two parakeets and my dad kept fresh water aquariums. I really dislike trimming my dogs’ toenails! Now I have to find 7 people to tag to continue with this. Ugh! Who shall I choose! I will post my choices in a bit. I might not get 7 people. Sam Bam
2007-05-21 21:31:38
I’ve been calling Sammy “Sam Bam”, from the Flintstones Bam Bam. Sammy is a character, for sure. I just have to tell a little bit about him. I adore this big guy. He is afraid of nothing. And like Lucy, he just walks along, over any other dogs, like they are not there. But heck, he’s big enough it doesn’t really matter because everyone else moves! He talks to me a lot. He will stand and bark at me, not even closing his mouth. He likes getting on the couch but he’s polite enough to wait until he’s asked before he gets up. Unless he’s alone in a room then he just jumps right up. He is very outgoing. When I was making my bed last night, he tried to mount me! Goofball. I just pushed him off and told him that was not acceptable. He has such a great range of emotions, he is a very full, well rounded, living being. Last night I put him in the crate and he was yapping, so I used the evil squirt bottle, and oh boy did he get mad at me. He

More Chase Lessons
2007-05-21 20:30:53
Woo hoo had another lesson with Chase and our instructor. Such great stuff. Our goal is to work him back up into agility, so we can have nice clean runs with good attention. And to do Rally and Obedience with him. He really has a ton of potential with both. He has such nice heeling when I have treats. So the continuing plan is to get him to think. To get him hyped up and excited, then have to connect with me before he gets a toy. So we had a tunnel and a jump, and I would put him in a wait and then walk to the other end of the obstacles. Then either just call him to me, or go through the tunnel or over the jump. He is a goof, he anticipates like crazy. But he was really getting the idea of having to listen to where I was going to say to go. And he loves his toy rewards. But before the toy, he’s have to give me a nose touch to my palm. So this is something we get to work on too. Next weekend at the agility trial we are going to work some more. In his most drivey environment, so

Travel to Bulgaria
2007-05-21 20:17:33
I would love to take the dogs with to some Sunny Beach property! However, flying them there would not be easy, or fun. Sometimes the husband and I do go on trips by ourselves, though. And Bulgaria seems like a fun, interesting, different place to go. Why not find out about the real estate and property in Bulgaria, just for fun? I wonder what their dog laws are like… I’ll have to go check.

Sam Pounced on Phoebe!
2007-05-21 00:19:58
Bahahaa… errr, *cough* ooops. Yeah, Sammy likes cats. Well, he likes to chase cats. He is a goof. And so I was letting him outside yesterday and didn’t see that Phoebe, our black rescued cat, was out there (yeah I hate that she is an outdoor cat but talk to the husband, the cats are his responsibility). So Sammy sees her before she sees him, and before I can grab him. Did I mention that Sam is huge? I swear he’s about 100 pounds, The Husband thinks he is more. He is a doll, though, snuggly bug and mellow and sweet. He’s just a bit excited about the cats. So he pounces, right on top of Pheobe. I managed to pull him off. Phoebe was so surpised she didn’t do anything but lay there, then run off when I pulled Sam off her. Sam didn’t hurt her, he was just thinking that she was a fun play toy. It was cute, everyone had fun (except Phoebe) and then we were done. Ah the adventures of having foster dogs.

Gotta Get a Hotel
2007-05-21 00:11:07
UGH! I have got to get a Hotel Reservation for the flyball tournament at the end of June. I keep putting it off. I don’t know why. I’ve heard that all the rooms are booked because it’s the weekend before the 4th of July. I could stay in another town that’s close, but I’m not sure about that. I really do want to go. So why do I keep putting it off? Hotel Reservation is a place I can use, I think. Not only do they book USA hotels, but also international for vacations. Hrmm.. I really want to go on vacation. They have great competitive rates, and great discounts on destinations throughout the world. I’d really love to go to Scotland. But then we might have to board the dogs. And with having six dogs at the moment, that’d be hard. That’s why when we go, we like to take the dogs with us. It’s cheaper that way. This website also books car rentals, flights, vacation packages, and vacation rentals. Another thing I can use it for is when

Do Animals have Emotions?
2007-05-20 17:53:58
I think it interesting, and a little bit funny, that some people still wonder if animals have rich emotional lives. I read an article in The Bark magazine yesterday about it. Fortunately, it’s a progressive magazine and they understand animal emotions, and so did the article (I don’t remember who wrote it). Living with dogs, very closely, emotions in them are obvious. They feel love, anger, frustration, joy, happiness, curiosity, and the whole range of emotions. They don’t react the same as humans do to different things, and they think differently, but they still feel emotions. The world is starting to realize this. Those of us who have lived closely with animals already know it, and don’t need any scientific studies to prove it. Though maybe for the rest of the world to reach the point we are, some good studies would be a good thing. It is my belief that emotions evolved in all animals, human and non, as survival techniques. We love our young so that we pro

Sam and Mac
2007-05-20 00:29:04
And here are some pictures of our two new boys. Sammy is the rough, and Mac is the smooth. Sammy is the owner surrender, and Mac, also, was an owner surrender. Mac was surrendered back in December 2006. He is six years old. We thought we had a home for him, so his foster family held onto him for a few months. However, that home didn’t work out, and his old foster family now has a new foster and can’t take Mac back. They have a puppy mill puppy, who needs a lot of love and work. And we understand puppies needing lots of love and work! Mac is being a bit shy today in hour house. He was just dropped off. He doesn’t want to approach my husband or myself, but he is already getting better, even after a couple hours. Mac’s foster family adored him, and wanted to keep him. Alas, we can’t keep them all. I wish we could, too. Mac is great with cats and kids and he’ll find a great home, too. I spent about an hour brushing Sammy out today. It’s so m

PPP Direct
2007-05-24 13:21:49
You’ll all see a new button on my sidebar. As you all know, once in a while I post opportunities to make money for the collies. Mostly I do it through Pay Per Post. Well, Pay Per Post has a new service called PPP Direct . If anyone wants to advertise on this site, wants me to blog for them, they can click on that button and sign up. This will make it super easy and simple for advertisers to hook up with Tip Tail! This really helps out blog advertising, and makes it easy and simple. PPP Direct, unlike other of the blog review sites like ReviewMe, only charges a small percentage, so more money can go to help the collies. For more information there is a blog post about the details. Pay Per Post only keeps enough to cover credit card charges, and PayPal transaction fees. Pay Per Post pays via Paypal, which makes payments super easy to receive. And they are a great company that has lot of bloggers and advertisers in their network. It’s a cutting-edge new type of advertising

Thursdays
2007-05-24 11:20:22
Well, today is Thursday. Last night we had Flyball practice. I brought Levi again. He had fun, even though he’s crated during practice. He gets to run around in between, and before and after. And, he got to play with his boyfriend, Raygen, the white with red speckles cattle dog. Levi never plays with dogs, so him playing with Raygen is quite amazing! We love to see it. Chase is too dainty on the box. He’s careful. Needs to be more exuberant. However, I’d like him to be fast and coordinated without being really hyper about it. Drive in control, with speed and confidence. We need that for agility, too. So we’ll see about practicing that. Agility trial this weekend, 3 dayer, should be fun!

More on Chips
2007-05-23 16:28:18
Okay, I called Avid yesterday, and Home Again. So what seems to happen is, if you buy their chips, they are registered to you and if the dog gets lost you will be called. However, if I, as a rescue, get a dog that is already chipped… well I’m pretty much screwed. I have to sign up for their payment plans. And at $10 a dog, that’s seems high for a rescue. Avid, at least, was able to put my name in as a contact. Mac is registered to his old old people in Las Vegas. So if they found him, they’d have no way to contact him. In order to really change where his chip is registered I’d have to pay $18.50. But they put me, and UCR, on his chip info as a contact. Hrmph. $18.50 might not sound like a lot, but for a rescue it can really add up per dog. For Home again, I’d have to sign up for their program, too, which also costs. $10 plus $14.99 for activation, then $9.99 per additional registeration. Hrmph. So Sammy’s Home Again chip stays at the vet whe

We want more website traffic
2007-05-23 13:14:29
We all want more traffic to our website s! Companies mostly, but us small time bloggers do, too. I’d love to have more dog people come here to check us out, comment, and leave us information. And I enjoy going to other dog blogs, too, and reading up on things and learning, and getting to know dogs and people. Blog marketing, in the corporate world, is very important. Blogs are a great way for businesses to keep up with their customers. Everyone loves to see up to date information, in addition to static pages that provide regular information. There is this website optimization firm to help out! And build more website traffic.

Many Paws
2007-05-23 13:07:48
The other night we had 24 paws in our bedroom. Yes, that is a lot of paws. Six dogs. How big is our bedroom? Not big, I will tell you. We have one King size bed that I sleep in with most of the dogs, and one single bed that my husband sleeps in, usually with no dogs (he doesn’t like to sleep with dogs pressed against him.) The beds go wall to wall. There is a little space, maybe 3 or 4 feet, from the foot of the bed to the wall. Enough for a 1 or 2 foot, small, dresser to fit in there with my clothes in it. And enough room for two dog beds. Mac has been sleeping next to me, sweet heart. We’ve also let Sam out of the crate the last couple of nights. If the downstairs is open, he’ll go whine at the kitties. LOL. So that gets closed. And he sleeps on a dog bed. He’s too big to fit on our bed, with the other 5 dogs on it. But I think he’s okay on the dog bed or on the couch in the other room. I just love Sammy. His former people emailed me to see how he

Co-Ops
2007-05-23 07:11:27
I love Co-Ops. We don’t really have them here in Salt Lake City, but when I was up to Olympia, Washington some years ago, I’d go to the Co-op market and buy fresh produce and local items. I love to support healthy, local items. When we get loans at a bank, we don’t really know where our money is coming from. But there is this place that provides Co-operative Loans. They are bound to their ethical policy, so money you borrow doesn’t come from human rights abuses, or the profits of unnecessary pollution. Personally, I also like to see if there are any animal related activities. I’ll have to check it out and see what else they have listed. I try to always support products that don’t test on animals, and that are animal ingredient free. This post is sponsored! My Disclosure Page

Short Agility Sumup
2007-05-26 21:19:18
Ugh.. I’m tired. After the trial today my husband and I went to my parents for a birthday dinner for me (yup it’s my birthday today). It was nice. I ate too much cake. But isn’t that what you are supposed to do on birthdays? Levi did awesome at agility. No Qs, though. The first run, Standard, I didn’t set him up right for the weaves. Nor did I for Jumpers, either. BUT, one of the best dogs there, a smooth BC, missed the weave entry too in Jumpers, so I didn’t feel so bad. It was a trap that was harder than it looked. Otherwise Levi ran clean and beautiful. Tomorrow is another day. I’m going to get to bed here soon.

Collie Agility!
2007-05-25 14:19:54
Oooo I love collie agility. I don’t see many collies in agility, so here is my boy, Levi. We got this at the Belgian Malinois National Specialty (as you can see by the bottom of the picture) that was here in Utah a week ago. I LOVE this photographer. Dog House Arts. Amazing pictures. I have another collage at home that I’m not sure what to do with yet. I probably shouldn’t post this so be nice and don’t copy and sell it. But I figure it’s my boy, I have to share!
