The true picture of India's Internet market and scope for Web2.0 Part 1
2007-05-15 16:58:00
Even though i am sick of all the invitations to social networks like yaari,Minglebox and now desimartini that lands in my mailbox or on Orkut scraps i firmly believe that amongst these websites lies India 's future Internet star this despite the fact that so many are warning against betting on web2.0 in India. let me first highlight the opinions of others who are pretty pessimistic in their opinionsFirst of all Avinash Bajaj said here that Web 2.0 is not for IndiaJaspreet Bindra Head of MSN says here that Romania's market would be bigger than india'siLeher paints a very pessimistic picture saying that target market is just 8 MN(pretty good i would say)AcNielson report which says that word of mouth is big influence in India compared to searching on Internet in USA (All the more scope for buzz Marketing any takers)Even at Webyantra people tend to believe that Web2.0 is more hype than substance Listening to all these people made even me sceptical for once but truth remains quite differe

Marketing an Internet Firm in India
2007-05-13 18:42:00
Its tough for an Internet Firm as they have to market themselves online as well as ofline in India . Ad spend on TV increased by 205% to 79 crore by online firms as reported by Livemint . The article describes it MakeMyTrip (India) Pvt. Ltd spends around Rs10 crore a year on print and television advertising. The travel firm has to necessarily be in the public eye in a country where the travel and hospitality businesses are booming. The travel firm isn’t the only company with an online business model to discover the advantages of advertising in mainstream media such as print and television. Monster, Naukri, Cleartrip, Yatra, and Rediff, all companies with the .com suffix have. As have the online media programmes created by companies such as Hindustan Lever Ltd (SunsilkGangofGirls.com) and Cadbury India Ltd (Meethamoment.com). More on it here

India Online Gaming Market
2007-05-08 10:35:00
Taking a look at the Online Gaming Market I found that the online gaming industry in India is worth Rs210 (US$4.92) million, according to a recently published IMRB-IAMAI report. However nearly 20 percent of this revenue (Rs40 million) goes directly to international players not based in India. Subscription-based revenues are three times more than advertising income. In the US, advertising accounts for close to 40 percent of revenues. The Distribution of revenue isOrganized cyber cafes = Rs121.7 millionSubscription-based revenues = Rs66 millionAdvertising = Rs22.4 millionThe Internet advertising industry size is Rs1.6 billion and less than 2 percent of the Indian ad market as of now.Zapak by Reliance (ADAG) is probably the only serious player in India and it was the partner for the recent Gamebox championship in Association with reliance Web world across India which featured nearly 11,000 gamers across india. Another Exciting Area maybe.

Orkut & India Scope for Online Marketing
2007-05-08 06:52:00
With Orkut Being no 2 Site in India I dug up more about Orkut and its users The number of Brazilian Orkut users counts for 56.68% of the total users, followed by The United States and India, with about 18.59% and 13.27% respectively (as of February 28, 2007). However these statistics do not reflect the demographics by country in a reliable way as members are free to submit any nationality (or country of residence) they wish and many indeed do so. According to Alexa website the number of Brazilian Orkut visitors counts for 67.3% of the total users, followed by India and The United States, with about 16.7% and 3.4% respectively .It's no1 in Brazil,no2 in India and no3 in Pakistan.Globally Its no8 in the world that's awesome. As a marketeer's point of view I found this by Siddharth B hereMore than two thirds of the Indian Internet Users are to be found in 6 cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune. Thus, only those organisations which have a strong market research

Yahoo!Orkut.comGoogle India GoogleRediff Microsoft Network (MSN)Naukri.comYouTubeWindows LiveBlogger.comWell This list is according to ALEXA and surprise of surprises Yahoo tops even though we know these rankings can be manipulated we must still give some credit to them. I think Yahoo is at top basically because it was one of the first website that people were exposed to in India and with it's hindi sounding name.I suppose people still use it for chat & mail but my belief is that if it comes to reading articles and all Rediff would be higherIf you see Top 50 at ALEXA u will see Masalatalk,DebonairBlog,Xboard.US,Rapidshare also there which are basically porno forums of Indian origin.Shaadi,Wiki,Icici,Indiatimes, ebay,Moneycontrol,Sulekha and other job portals and others form a part of ALEXA top 50.Interesting Scope for Online Marketing here

Salaries at Bschool the real picture
2007-05-02 10:41:00
Well Look what IMT G forced all the big institutes to come out with . Uptill Last Year Everybody was Happy with average salries of 8-10 lakh zone in tier 1 Bschools which was closer to reality but This year IMT G came out with a 10+ figure which led to Everyone in a tier of upmanship with salaries quoting as high as 14-15 lakhs as average for Bschools with everyone trying to be a level up than a lower ranked bschool. .The result you can find Anirban's article in hindustan times .The average and median salaries were calculated on the number of offers and not on the final accepted offers. Also, all the foreign salaries are converted to their INR equivalents and then added to the pool! Moreover, in calculation of the lowest salary the higher of the offers is taken into account for all the students. Confusing, isn’t it? Let me explain. Most of the schools have people with prior work experience and they have a separate lateral recruitment process where the salaries being offered are highe

CAT 2007 Analysis and the issue of reservations
2007-04-27 08:01:00
Well diverting away from my blog I just got hold of PDF providing lots of statistical data provided by IIMB site www.iimb.ernet.inThis is statistician's delite and when backed by own Term paper for comm course on CAT percentiles leads me to believe some points1. Most of the OBC's seems to be performing quite well without resevations and if we need reservations its only for OBC's who are not engineers and not males2. Average OBC Percentile score is 97.73 which 16% higher than SC students and they still need reservation i think these statistics should be used to debate who actually needs reservation3. To get a call from IIM B you need to have good acads ( P.S I didn't get a B call and my acads in Bachelors is bad so tht's a criteria only specific to B it seems).4. Even though 48% of applicants to CAT were engineers the % selected for GD/PI goes as high as 84% which seems due to Quant where the avg Percentile goes as high as 97.3 for a general candidate.5. It seems there is a marked

Thoughts after reading Blink
2007-03-30 15:32:00
Blink written by Malcom Gladwell writer of Tipping Point:The most striking thing about Blink is the fact about the author how when he grew his hair long his life changed in small but significant ways he started getting pulled out of airport lines but the significant event that led him to write Blink was when he was pulled up by 3 policemen who thought he was a rapist while the only similarity between him and the rapist was that he was having a large head of curly hair. This lead him to the power of first impressions and writing of Blink the power of first two seconds. Interestingly he focuses on both positives and negatives of blink how we judge so manypeople in the first two seconds or the power of our subconscious mind. This book is about the power of first two secondsIt seems to portray how we do stereotyping something thats true for India or any other place in world as well as USA and seems to hold some interesting foresights for marketeers and how that two seconds can help maybe in

Buzz Marketing a study in Indian context
2007-03-29 10:45:00
Some students of IIM Banglore did a study on buzz marketing . They have found that buzz was most common for Technology Products (mobiles, laptops, games) and Automobiles. These categories were followed by Entertainment, Fashion Goods and Home Appliances. The rest of the categories did not have great variance. They also found that people below 35 years of age were more affected by buzz marketing in India. This indicates that buzz marketing can be effectively used for product categories that have a higher degree of customer involvement in the purchase. For the purchase more commonplace goods, buzz does not have a significant impact.Interestingly most of the buzz or viral marketing in India happens either through the net or in case of vehicles at some level through test rides and all. the sequence of chain mails in IT industry and blogs seem to be various tools of such marketing in India. An update is that the daddu protex viral marketing video has now reached India Fm broadband it also see

Buzz Marketing Rural India examples
2007-03-29 10:42:00
The marketers at Mahindra Farm Equipment realized that they had to identify and get progressive farmers and opinion leaders to interact with the brand. And, they did this by creating an event around the product that encouraged interaction. When the company launched its Mahindra Super Turbo 595DI tractor it faced the task of bringing the message of new technology and higher productivity to the target audience. It gave test rides and sold the product to opinion leaders, who used tractors over considerable periods of time. This activity was carried out in a sustained manner in Punjab, Haryana and Maharastra and as a result it has become the leading brand. Asian Paints has tried it differently in the rural markets -- not just with rural campaigns or an event, but by participating in an ongoing activity. The objective was to create ‘reference sites’ and the company achieved this by opting for high visibility spots such as the village head’s home, the Panchayat office so that these

Buzz Marketing some negative examples
2007-03-29 10:41:00
Burger King's Subservient Chicken - Burger King's marketing program called Subservient Chicken did indeed generate a lot of word of mouth, but the word of mouth was about the marketing campaign instead of the product that was being marketed. Also, those marketing efforts which rely on being edgy or on some kind of stunt often fade quickly when the novelty or edge wears off. Finally, this type of marketing is not reproducible or sustainable since it won't be edgy the second time around.McDonald's LincolnFry - a fake blog was discovered, and it generated lots of negative word of mouth and little participation.American Express' billboard - a fake blog poster who told readers to check out a great Amex billboard was found to be an Ogilvy employee; this violation of trust resulted in massive negative word of mouth which spread around the world.

Buzz or word of mouth marketing defined
2007-03-29 10:37:00
A very successful word-of-mouth promotion creates buzz. Buzz generates a highly intense and interactive form of word-of-mouth referral that occurs both online and offline. Successful word-of-mouth initiatives do not follow a strictly linear process with information flowing from one individual to another rather successful models leverage subgroup connectivity and relationships by pursuing a Reed's Law hub approach to message distribution. A marketer has successfully created buzz when the interactions are so intense that the information moves in a matrix pattern rather than a linear one. The result is everyone is talking about or purchase the product or service.A very good example is Google itselfGmail - Google did no marketing, they spent no money. They created scarcity by giving out Gmail accounts only to a handful of "power users." Other users who aspired to be like these power users "lusted" for a Gmail account and this manifested itself in their bidding for Gmail invites on eBay. D

Viral Marketing Defined
2007-03-29 10:26:00
Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can often be word of mouth delivered and enhanced online; it can harness the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly. Some of the first recorded offline/online viral campaigns were developed by Tim Nolan of Spent2000.com fame circa 1996. By placing abstract pairings of catch-phrases, quotes, song lyrics and image mashups, Mr. Nolan developed a method of creating "buzz" around a URL based installation. Phrases like "This city isn't safe" placed alongside a URL created enough curiosity in people's minds to remember a URL and visit again once they were online. Viral marketing sometimes refers to internet-based stealth marketing campaigns, including the use of blogs, seemingly ama

Buzz Marketing some succesful examples
2007-03-29 10:24:00
Rather than blitzing the customers with TV commercials for its new Focus subcompact, Ford Motor Co. recruited just a handful of trend setters in a few markets and gave them each a Focus to drive for six months. They were asked to be simply seen with the car and to hand out Focus-themed trinkets to anyone who expressed interest in it. For its campaign, the managers were not looking for celebrities but for common individuals who seem to influence the trend of what was cool in that season: assistants to celebrities, party planners and disk jockeys.

Buzz Marketing some successful examples
2007-03-29 10:21:00
An oft discussed example of buzz marketing in the recent past is that used by Vespa scooters in which an unsuspecting target may notice a group of youth on attractive motorbikes at street side cafes. If one evinces interest in the sleek machines the youth are more than willing to give the details of the dealer who sells the bike. Till this moment, it is almost difficult to guess that this is part of an elaborate buzz campaign and that the youth are paid to flaunt the bikes and generate interest among the audienceThe case of Sony Ericcson and its introductory campaign for the T68i cell phone is an outstanding example of a non-intrusive campaign that generated considerable buzz for the product. The company hired actors and actresses to play tourists at popular attractions around USA such as New York's Empire State Building. These paid performers asked passersby to take their picture with the company's new T68i cell phone that offers an add-on digital camera. In doing this apparently ha

Tipping Point a great book on buzz marketing
2007-03-13 18:49:00
Why did crime in New York drop so suddenly in the mid–90s? How does an unknown novelist end up a bestselling author? Why is teenage smoking out of control, when everyone knows smoking kills? What makes TV shows like Sesame Street so good at teaching kids how to read? Why did Paul Revere succeed with his famous warning? In this brilliant and groundbreaking book, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly. Ideas, behavior, messages, and products, he argues, often spread like outbreaks of infectious disease. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a few fare–beaters and graffiti artists fuel a subway crime wave, or a satisfied customer fill the empty tables of a new restaurant. These are social epidemics, and the moment when they take off, when they reach their critical mass, is the Tipping Point.A must read for followers of buzz marketing
