HBO and Cinemax Go HD 2007-06-27 00:25:54 Home Box Office Inc announced it is planning to make all 26 feeds of its HBO and Cinemax channels available in 1080-line-interlace (1080i) high definition (HD). Over 40 million household in the US subscribe to the two channels and starting in September 2007, they will be able to watch the programming in HD.
The US-based company will initially launch 10 channels, in addition to the existing HBO HD service, on DirecTV. More HD feeds will be added during in early 2008.
HBO Chairman and CEO Bill Nelson said:
“We have a long history of firsts in technology - satellite, multiplex and SVOD. Such a commitment reinforces our tradition of giving our customers the best programming when they want it and how they want it.”

: A Global Strategic Business Report. The report focuses on HDTV-capable displays and integrated HDTV sets, and analyzed major geographic markets, including the US, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, as well as the rest of the world.
Despite the availability of HDTV technology since the 1980s, its uptake has been slow due to the high cost involved. The report indicates that traditional markets for entertainment and computer displays are being replaced today with high-definition televisions, presenting a new line of multimedia and interactive consumer applications and services. By 2008, the global HDTV market is anticipated to exceed 50 million units.

Cablevision Adds VOOM Channels 2007-07-21 12:37:54 The nation’s fifth largest multi system operator Cablevision announced recently that it will add 15 new high-definition (HD) channels from VOOM HD Networks. This brings the total number of HD channels available to its iO digital cable customers to 40.
VOOM is a division of Cablevision’s Rainbow Media Network and was previously available only on DISH Network. Cablevision also indicated that it will have the capability to carry more than 500 HD channels on its fiber optic network by the end of 2007.
Multi system operators (MSOs) Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications have all been publicizing HD capability as direct broadcast satellite provider DirecTV increased pressure earlier this year by announcing that it will soon have the capacity to offer over 100 HD channels.

DISH Network Increases HD Channels 2007-07-31 00:19:19 EchoStar Communications Corporation and its DISH Network satellite TV service announced recently that it is increasing its high-definition (HD) offerings with a number of new channels over the next three months.
DISH Network recently launched eight regional sports networks (RSNs) in HD, including:

Including the seven HD RSNs launched earlier this year, DISH now offers a total of 17 RSNs in high-definition.
On August 15th, DISH Network will rollout seven national HD channels, which will be added to its DishHD package. The channels in the package include:

Interactive Nike Zoom Commercial on DISH Network 2007-08-09 21:14:01 Nike introduced their “Quick is Deadly” integrated marketing campaign for the Nike ZOOM footwear line earlier this week.

DISH to Enable USB External Storage and Ethernet on ViP622 2007-08-19 23:17:06 According to MultiChannel, DISH Network is going to make available a long-awaited “USB external storage” solution for its ViP622 MPEG4 High Definition DVR. This will allow users to save content from their receiver to an external hard drive for later viewing. DISH Network plans to charge a one-time fee of $39.99 for the service.
Additionally, DISH Network is scheduling to enable the ethernet port on the ViP622, allowing the satellite receiver to “phone home” and report pay-per-view (PPV) purchases via the internet. Reportedly, this will be the first step in the launch of the DishONLINE video-on-demand service, which may be operational by September 2007.

EchoStar Buys Sling Media 2007-09-27 09:00:32 EchoStar announced earlier this week that it has agreed to acquire Sling
Media, a privately-held digital lifestyle products company that enhances existing products and standards with hardware and software that make divergent technologies compatible.
The deal values the Foster City, California-based Sling Media at approximately $380 million in cash and EchoStar stock options. CEO and co-founder Blake Krikorian said:
By combining strategies, resources and technologies with EchoStar, Sling Media will be able to rapidly expand our open multi-platform product offerings, not only for DISH Network subscribers, but for digital media enthusiasts around the globe.

DISH Network Adds TBS HD 2007-10-11 00:04:01 EchoStar Communications announced this week the addition of TBS in high definition (HD) to it’s DISH Network lineup. The deal was signed with Turner Broadcasting on Monday and TBS in HD, the exclusive HD provider of the Major League Baseball playoffs, is available now from DISH Network.

EchoStar to Spin off DISH Network 2007-11-10 20:12:10 Multichannel News reported yesterday that EchoStar has filed documents with the FCC to split the company and spin off DISH Network as its own company. The new company will be called EchoStar Holding Corporation.
EchoStar Holding Corporation (EHC) was incorporated in Nevada on October 12, 2007. As part of the spin-off, EchoStar will contribute approximately $1.4 billion in cash and investment securities to EHC.
Interestingly, EchoStar is asking for expedited approval from the FCC on or before December 15th.
