Paris in for a World of Hurt
2007-05-14 13:31:28
It has been reported that Paris Hilton is taking self-defense lessons in preparation for her 6 weeks in jail. Supposedly Paris has asked her personal trainer to teach her some techniques to keep her safe before she enters jail on June 5th. “She’s so scared about going to jail and will do everything she can to protect herself.” After threatening messages appeared on her website, seemingly from existing inmates of Century Regional Detention Facility, Ms. Hilton has been justifiably concerned for her safety. “Paris has been really shaken by the threats. People are saying there’s some tough girls inside who will target her.” Sure, laws apply to the rich and famous too, but we are talking Paris Hilton here. If anyone is not cut out for spending time in jail it is her. Perhaps she should consider watching the “Secrets of Cage Fighting” by Tom Proctor. All puns aside, this could be the most important 90 minutes of Paris’ life. http://www.worthprotecti

No Yum Yums for Dum Dum
2007-05-14 01:42:21
A robbery attempt was foiled when a man got zapped with a stun gun while trying to rob Yum Yum Donuts in San Ysidro. Just before 11 PM, a man walks in to the donut shop and jumped over the counter. He struck an employee and tried to take the cash in the register. The female employee fought back, and another woman pulled out a stun gun and let the guy have it. The guy was able to run out before the police showed up. No money, no donuts, no luck. Don’t think it can’t happen to you. Whether personally or in your presence, some creep may decide to act a little crazy. Sure the other woman could have backed up and minded her own business. She could have let the creep hit the employee and empty the register. If she didn’t act when she did, would the creep have settled for the register? Would he have turned to the other woman, punch her in the face and demanded her purse? Would an extra two minutes allowed the creep to pull out a gun or knife and cause some serious dama

Pepper Spray Training 101
2007-05-13 06:01:39
Prerequisite: Purchase pepper spray, some for practice, some to carry regularly. http://www.worthprotectionsecurity.com/peppersprays.htm Spray Pattern Considerations: Fogger - Best for outdoor use and multiple target capability. Chance of blow back. Cone - Best all around pattern, more concentrated patterns than Foggers. Minimal blow back. Stream - Good for indoor/outdoor use & windy conditions, pin-point accuracy required. Foam/Gel - Perfect for indoors, pin-point accuracy, little to no chance of blow back. How to Practice Your Technique: Always carry your pepper spray in the same location so you will not have to think about where it is when you are in danger. Practice drawing your pepper spray quickly. Practice flipping safety mechanism. Know how your pepper spray works and practice spraying with the wind to your back. Practice aiming and hitting a specific target. Fogger and cone pattern require less aim. Stream, foam or gels require greater accuracy. Practice with

Mass Chaos

The state of Massachusetts has made it extremely difficult to purchase self defense products. With the exception of personal alarms and whistles, you are extremely limited on what items you can carry. Of course a steel baton or knife would be fine, but many people do not care for those kind of up close and personal means. Pepper sprays, stun guns or tasers are the usual weapons of choice, but unless you have your Firearms Identification Card (FIC), you are out of luck. Getting your FIC is easy enough… You just need to fill out the forms, pay the $25 dollar application fee, wait three to six weeks for processing, and in some cases, the times and locations to submit the application are also restricted. You can only apply after 3 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Somerville, MA. Then, once you are FIC certified, you have to find a licensed fire arms dealer to purchase your $19.99 pepper spray. Well, $44.95 pepper spray once you add in the application fee of the FIC. At this poi

Give Them What They Ask For

Betty was in good shape. She went to the gym almost every day. She alternated between cardio and weight training, watched what she ate and generally led a healthy lifestyle. She also drove a nice car and routinely parked at the back of the parking lots. Most of the other lazy people parked up close, but not Betty. She thought the extra walking was good for her and would rather walk the extra distance. Besides, keeping her car farther away from others would hopefully prevent some of the dings and scratches that might happen if she squeezed her car in between everybody else in the closer parking spots. As usual, she shows up to the gym rather late in the evening. There are not many people there, but that is just the way she likes it, less crowded. She parks in the back of the lot, under a street light and makes her way to the front door. On the way she drops her car keys into her backpack and continues to enter the gym. She heads to the locker room, grabs what she needs, and lock

Only Real Martial Arts Stop Rapists

The following is an excellent article by Chris “Lt X” Pizzo. “One of my favorite stories to tell is about the time my brother-in-law’s girlfriend got her black belt in karate… She had her big flashy test…kicked the bag…sparred other girls (and a couple of guys that looked like girls!) with the foam booties and gloves on…did her kata with the appropriate “snap” in her movements…very nice. Now, I’m not a complete jerk, so I let her have her moment. Congratulated her, hobnobbed with the karate “master”, and ate a piece of the sheet cake with little icing karate dudes on it…. That was until a couple of months later at a family graduation party when she began to tell all the girls how the type of “karate” she studies is great for fitness (ok), fun (ok), and self defense (BZZZZZ!). I had stood what I could, but I couldn’t stands it no more… I walked right up into the

Carjacked, Worst Case Scenario

Everybody likes a story with a happy ending. You know how they go… Cinderella, Snow White, they start out as sad story but deep down you know everything will turn out fine in the end. Sadly, these stories are make believe. Just like many of the stories that I share with you, some are real, some are made up to make a point. Most of the time these stories have happy endings, finishing with the victim pulling out a stun gun or pepper spray just in the nick of time. This story was published in the Malaysia Star on Friday May 4, 2007. A man was driving to work very early in the morning in Singapore. On this particular instance, his wife and young son were accompanying him into the city at about 4 am. The man stops his car at a gas station, leaves it running and runs inside quick to use the bathroom. Moments after he leaves the car, the wife is started by another man wielding a knife and knocking on the window, demanding she opens the door. This is where I would like to say she s

Encountering an Unfriendly Dog
2007-05-06 03:20:23
Man’s best friend. Usually. But sometimes an unfriendly dog may threaten someone on the street. Now if you are trespassing on someone else’s property and you chose to ignore the “Beware of Dog” sign, that is your own fault. However, if you are minding your own business and an aggressive dog crosses your path, that is a different story. Dogs are complex animals and share many of the same feelings and emotions as humans. Just ask any dog lover or a family that considers the dog as a true family member. Many times you can read a dog’s mannerisms as decide if the dog approaching you is attacking or exploring, threatening or friendly. If you enjoy the luxury of being able to determine this from a safe distance, stand very still and attempt to be calm. Don’t scream at the dog and run, you could easily confuse the dog and escalate the situation very quickly. Be aware of where the dog is and keep looking in its general direction. Do NOT stare into the dog&

When Bears Attack!
2007-05-04 15:56:37
Jesse and Lewis had been hiking all day with heavy packs across the wide open tundra. It was towards the end of the day when they saw a HUGE grizzly bear standing up on its hind feet about 300 meters away. Knowing the ways of bears they both froze, daring not to move for fear of giving away their position. Both sensed the direction of the wind and realized their scent was carried directly towards the curious bruin. And at that moment they could see, even from such a great distance, the bear’s nose tweak, sniffing those molecules that shouted “Dinner!” Lewis became worried, more so when the bear let out a great roar and launched on all fours in their direction. He reached for his rifle he watched as Jesse sat calmly down on the tundra, took off his pack, opened it and brought out a pair of never used running shoes. As the bear rapidly approached Jessie pulled off his hiking boots and calmly put the shoes on. “What are you doing?” Lewis yelled. “You

A Taser of Heroic Proportions
2007-05-03 15:18:13
I was watching Heroes the other night on TV. If you have not ever seen it, it is on Monday nights on NBC. It is a pretty good show with the main premise of ordinary people who woke up one morning with extraordinary powers, eventually leading up to trying to save the world from an bomb that will destroy New York City. As the tagline goes “Save the Cheerleader. Save the World.” I have seen a number of the episodes, but I have not followed it too closely. This past week’s episode that I caught was about traveling forward in time five years, showing what happened if the bomb was not prevented in the present day. The episode was packed full of the normal superhero action and excitement - invisibility, flying, shapeshifting, psychokenisis, etc. There was even a scene when Parkman pulls out a taser and zaps Hiro unconscious. Of course, that scene was the one that registered the most with me. Hey, I sell those, I thought to myself. At the end of the episode, I turned to

The Illusion of Security
2007-05-17 02:01:39
What would it take to make you feel safe and secure? A security alarm system? A surveillance camera? There are various products designed to do just that, make you feel safe. Some work, some don’t, and some appear to work even if they are not actually functional. But that is part of the illusion of security. If it appears to be protected, or looks like too much trouble, a potential criminal may pass it by and look for an easier target. Self defense 101. Look alert and project a confident demeanor. Appear to be a harder target and a lesser assailant may look to prey elsewhere. Security 101. Have a visible keypad or security camera prominently displayed with a flashing red LED light and a would be robber may think twice about tangling with the nuisance of a security alarm. As long as no one knows that the security devices are fake, everything is fine. Right? There are many types of deceptive security devices and fake security cameras that give the impression of a fully functional

A pimento or pepperoncini is only mildly spicier with a 100-500 SHU rating. Green pepper Tabasco sauce may yield 600-800, regular pepper Tabasco at 2500- 5000, and super spicy habanero Tabasco sauce topping out at 7000- 8000 SHU. Widely popular jalapeño peppers rate around 2500-8000. BAM! Pure cayenne pepper typically packs enough capsaicin to reach 30,000-50,000, compared to more exotic 50,000-80,000 Thai peppers. Speaking

Not All Criminals Wear Signs
2007-05-22 10:08:46
A couple weekends ago, Walmart shoppers were greeted by convicted shoplifters in Attalla, Alabama. Wearing sandwich board signs stating “I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart”, they stood outside for several hours each, reminding patrons that shoplifting is a crime. The judge ordering the people to do this felt this embarrassment was worth avoiding a 60-day jail sentence. The store manager also approved of this idea and stated that most of the feedback on the situation was positive. Although I am not sure I totally agree with skipping the jail time in exchange for two four-hour stints as a sidewalk billboard, I do like the idea of criminals wearing signs. Or maybe bells around their necks to boot. It would be great if that guy walking in the general direction of your car while pumping gas after dark was wearing a “I am a thief” sign. Or the other approaching bad guy trying to sneak up on you with a forewarning jingling noise from several yards away. Sadly, thi

Locked and Loaded Too Late?
2007-05-21 14:12:32
Three people were brutally murdered after their home was invaded and a killer stabbed the family to death in Lancaster County, PA. Local authorities urged people to lock their doors and turn on lights in an attempt to deter further attacks as the killer is still at large. There are no suspects in the killings as of yet. Many people in the area have hit the local sporting goods and security shops in droves to purchase guns, pepper sprays and home security systems. It is unfortunate that it takes a “Killer on the Loose” warning to persuade folks to protect themselves and their loved ones. This is a wake up call to all those residents that thought it could not happen in my neighborhood. At minimum, hopefully people are locking doors and windows at night. Perhaps a motion detector on the lights in the front of the house. Better yet, all of the above as well as arming themselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to properly protect themselves. It should not take an act

Inside the Criminal Mind: Home Burglary
2007-05-23 15:01:19
It does not matter where you live. Middle-class suburbs, high-class condos, low-income housing, your home is a target. A burglar with his mind set on your house will walk through your front door, crawl through a window or even smash a sledge hammer through your roof. I recently came across an interview of a reformed burglar who was extremely prolific in his day, breaking into about 60 homes with a grand total of tens of thousands of dollars of jewelry and electronics. Of course, he has now vowed to lead a more law-abiding lifestyle. Probably due to the fact he is serving house arrest and will say anything. Speaking of saying anything, he also decided to spill the beans on tactics and secrets of the trade of burglarizing homes. The burglars already know, but this knowledge may be of great benefit to a clueless homeowner. The following are some of the highlights from inside the mind of a criminal: Point of Entry: Windows - French windows, roll outs, weak metal frames (many times
