Yes, Another Hostel 2 Poster 2007-05-14 06:34:09
I have talked about the Hostel
2 posters before. This new poster is closer in look and content to the posters for the original film, which I think is a step in the right direction. But does it get me viscerally scared, disgusted or intrigued? No, not really.
Still not interested at all in watching this movie.

The Ex Poster 2007-05-11 04:12:14
I find it interesting that the poster sort of hints at, but doesn’t make it clear that the Jason Bateman character is wheelchair bound. That is one aspect of the movie that gets a lot of play in the trailer.
Otherwise, it’s mostly a typical characters against a white background poster, but only showing the characters from the waist up. More amusing than most posters of it’s kind, but not especially amusing per se.

Delta Farce Posters 2007-05-10 03:04:16
When you are making a movie that is, to some extent, a parody of war movies, picking a famous war movie poster and having some fun with it is a good way to create a memorable and attention grabbing new poster. But although I like the concept, I don’t think this poster goes far enough. It is still too similar to the original full metal jacket poster. Of course, the original is pretty lean, so there isn’t that much you can do with it. But they should have tried harder anyway.
This second poster, on the other hand, is pretty blah. A lot of space dedicated to the sky and to little white letters. And again, not funny or playful enough. But it does show the actors. I’m guessing some people will be interested in the film because it has Larry The Cable Guy.

Georgia Rule Poster 2007-05-09 17:29:43
By looking at this poster I now know that it stars Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan and Felicity Huffman. It also tells me that the marketing people think that Lindsay’s image has been so damaged that Jane Fonda is actually the main attraction of the movie.
Overall, not a very interesting poster, is it?

Ten New Hairspray Character Posters 2007-05-09 05:35:35
Tommy DiChiara over at Cinematical has just posted ten brand new character posters from Hairspray, and they all look very much like the one above. Sure, the character changes, a little bit of the text changes and each one of the posters has a different, albeit equally loud, background color. But the overall effect is one of sameness, especially because the title takes so much space.
Still, I like the overall playful, colourful style they are going for. Will the film be equally playful and colourful? And more importantly, will it be fun? We’ll see.

Lucky You Poster 2007-05-05 04:59:49
It’s easy to forget that there is another film opening this weekend, since Spider-Man 3 is getting all the attention. But Lucky You, the new Curtis Hanson film, is indeed coming to a screen near you today.
The poster itself is pretty standard stuff. Half of it dedicated to showing the stars’ heads, half of it dedicated to giving an idea of the location and premise. Not very exciting, but passable.
It’s not like there will be too many people paying attention to this poster this week anyway.

First American Gangster Posters 2007-05-05 04:31:00
Nice posters. Very classy. Very stylish. Very dark. The choice of cutting the stars’ head in half is a little odd, but you can still tell who those people are, so I guess it’s okay.
However, I do think that the Denzel Washington one has a little too much black and not enough white. The lack of contrast makes the poster stand out less. The Russell Crowe one, on the other hand, grabs your attention immediately.
American
Gangster
only opens on November 2nd, so we should still see some other posters for it coming out. But so far so good.

Six new Potter Posters 2007-05-05 03:49:30
Over at JoBlo they have six new Potter
character posters. They all follow the same pattern of the one above, showing one of the main characters together with what I’m guessing is a relevant enemy that character will have to face in the movie.
I quite like these posters. They follow the same general aesthetic of the other Potter posters, but they seem to be more specific to the Potter 5 storyline. I think this will get the people who have already read the book more pumped for seeing it come alive on the big screen. And it will make the people who haven’t read the book (like me) curious. It’s a win-win situation.
Go over to JoBlo to see the rest of them.

Mutant Chronicles 2007-05-17 04:40:13
think that, as far as teaser posters go, the one above is pretty good. You can’t see any character detail, but it sets up the dark atmosphere and shows clearly enough that they are ready to fight.
But, I really like the previous teaser poster for this film much more.
This one sends chills through my spine. The helmet pierced by the, well, thing, conveys a sense of deep darkness and of raging war in a way that the new poster can’t approach. It’s also a much more memorable and iconic image. I hate the look of the title, but it’s an otherwise a very powerful poster.

The Game Plan Poster 2007-05-16 17:56:45
Oh. My. God. It’s the rock. And a little kid dressed as a ballerina. And a dog wearing a tiara. Oh. My God.
Ok, I’m over the shock. This is actually a pretty standard Disney poster. The movie everyone is immediately reminded of is Vin Diesel’s The Pacifier, and with good reason.
The two are cut from the same cloth.
Now, I don’t like either of the two posters. At all. But I’m not the target audience, and Disney has proven that it can sell the hell out of these movies. The Pacifier earned $113 million dollars, for heaven’s sake. So I’m going, for now, to trust their judgement that this is the best way to make people come to the theater to see The Game Plan.
Not sure what this means for The Rock’s career tough.

Shrooms Poster 2007-05-16 03:54:54
Sure, the moon as a skull thing has been done before. But this is a very good implementation of that concept. It cleverly includes the movie’s premise, which involves a bunch of teenagers getting high on mushrooms. And it also conveys a scary but still humorous mood, which I imagine is what the movie is going for.
Before I saw this poster I didn’t even know this movie existed. Now I’m curious about it. So, it works for me.

Men in Tights: Super-Hero Movie Poster Silliness Throughout the Ages 2007-05-15 05:59:59 While I was “researching” my piece on my favorite super-hero movie posters, I ended up running across quite a few silly examples of the genre. What is it about grown men wearing their underwear over their pants that makes for such silly posters? Hmm, forget I asked that.
Anyways, since Spider-Man 3 was once again the most seen film over the weekend, it seems like a good time to take a look at some very silly super-hero movie posters. This time, let’s do it chronologically. And let’s start with the 60’s, since there weren’t many super-hero movies before that decade.
The 60’s
The 60’s are remarkable mostly for bringing us the first Batman movie. Yes, that is right, the Batman you know, the one with Michael Keaton, wasn’t the first. This little pearl came over 20 years before.
Holy bad movie poster Batman!

Dead or Alive Movie Poster 2007-05-15 02:10:14
Add me to the scores of people who are shocked that this is finally, after years of delay, going to make it to the big screen.
As for the poster itself, well, it look a lot like this Hero poster:
I’m guessing that this is not a coincidence, especially since both films are being released by the Weinsteins.
I generally like both posters, but the one for DOA amps the cheese factor significantly, making it less effective. Cowboy hats just don’t go together with swords.

Triangle Poster 2007-05-15 01:12:57
Today the folks over at Twitch Film bring us the official poster for Triangle. The film was directed by Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark and Johnnie To. Each of the three directors apparently helmed 30 minutes of the film.
The poster itself in not very inspiring. But it does recall the three heads premise behind the making of the film, which I’m guessing is going to be one of the main selling points.

Final Stardust Poster 2007-05-19 18:58:56
Slashfilm has the final Stardust movie poster, and it is, well, ok, but not great. You have the two main characters at the center, brightly illuminated by some sort of star/sun. Then you have several of the other characters floating around in the edges. The over all effect is nice, but a little dull.
What a fantasy movie like this needs is a poster that communicates the wonders that the audience will experience in the film. The trailer does a decent job of that, but the poster itself is mostly focused on showing all the stars who are in the movie.

1408 Movie Poster 2007-05-19 05:44:36
It’s surprising how much of a difference context makes. If you took the above room photo by itself you would see nothing strange in it. Just an ordinary photo of a room. But add the context of it being a poster for a horror movie based on a Stephen King story and suddenly you see monsters creeping in the shadows just outside the frame.
Still, I think this poster is a little too subtle. It might have benefited from some creepy elements in the room itself we could latch too. Doesn’t need to be nothing major. And not knowing the story the film is based on I’m not sure what would be appropriate. But I’m sure they could come up with something that made the room feel a little off by itself, without any need for a larger context.

Good Luck Chuck Posters 2007-05-22 21:07:28
I think I hate Dane Cook. Well, perhaps hate is too strong a word, but I find him completely unfunny. I say this not to be mean, but only because I think my feelings about him might be affecting my feelings about these posters.
There is a part of my brain that thinks that those posters are good, different and memorable. But the rest of me is having a deep physical reaction that can be best represented by the word “blah”. Honestly, the whole underwear aesthetics of these things leaves me deeply underwhelmed. And Cook’s expression seems oh so smug. I hate it.
That said, Jessica Alba still looks good, even in a silly poster and holding a melting ice cream. I guess that counts for something, for some people at least.

Sicko Posters 2007-05-22 20:43:04
Whatever you think about Michael Moore and his movies, one has to admit that the marketing materials for them have been excellent. And these posters for Sicko
are no different.
The general design is one that we have seen before in the Fahrenheit 9/11 poster: Michael Moore + some comic elements + clear references to a controversial topic. I think that the poster below is a little funnier, however, the one above is more iconic and memorable. But they both probably do a great job of getting the core audience for the movie excited about it.
Preaching to the converted? Maybe, but it will sell tickets.

1408 Final Poster 2007-05-25 21:55:11
I complained that the 1408 teaser poster was too subtle. Well, the new (and supposedly final) one is a lot less subtle. On the other hand, it is a lot more ugly.
They seem to have overdone the gritty, dirty and scratchy look without much need. So, it ends up “uglyfying” the poster without adding much in terms of visual/emotional impact. Also, I’m not a fan of the “two floating heads” type of posters, both because they are kind of silly and because they have been way overdone. Although I do think the showing only half of each face is one of the better variations of this particular poster genre.
The first poster, despite my reservations about it, made me more interested in seeing the film. It did convey a sense of creepiness, and also made the film seem a little different than most other horror/suspense movies that we have seen recently. This one, on the other hand, makes the film look like a hundred other movies. And a somewhat cheap version of them to b Read more: Final

Descent Poster 2007-05-24 22:04:39
Descent
is a movie that recently played in the Tribeca film festival. It follows the story of a woman who is raped and then seeks revenge. Bloddy revenge. I’m guessing you know the type of movie.
But, do you get any of that from the poster? Do you get the sense that this is a woman who has undergone a deeply traumatic event? Someone who is likely to be filled with hate? I’m not, at least not clearly. As a matter of act, I think that if you added a funny tagline to the poster you could pass it off as a poster for a comedy.
In recent years film like Saw and the first Hostel have done a very good job of attracting an audience using very gory marketing material. Although I appreciate what they have done, it’s been aped to death, so I would love to see some horror posters taking a more subtle route. But I think this one goes too far in that direction. It lacks any element to make it unique and to make it stand out.
I kind of see what they were trying to do with it, hint Read more: Poster
The Dark is Rising Poster 2007-05-23 22:00:17
I like the way this poster looks. The whole flare effect is well done and interesting to look at. But, it tells me exactly nothing about the movie. Add to that a title that is itself enigmatic and you have a poster that is likely to leave people scratching their heads.
Even in a teaser poster you still have to give people something to connect too. A theme, a character, a story, a mood, an iconic image. That is what will make the poster memorable. That is what will make people go to the Internet and look the movie up. That is what is going to make them excited about the film.
If you just give people a cool image with no context, they will perhaps notice and stop to look at it. But they won’t remember it the next day. And they won’t form any kind of emotional bond with the film.

Another Day, Another Transformers Poster 2007-05-28 22:19:36
This new poster combines several elements we have see before, such as the face of Optimus, the skyline and Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox standing together. We do get to see more of Megatron than we did before, tough.
I don’t much like this poster. Too cluttered, and the various elements don’t mesh together very well. I understand the desire of having a poster that brings together all the things that we have seen before, but this isn’t a very good implementation of that.

I Know Who Killed Me Poster 2007-05-26 20:01:31
I’m guessing that the blue rose, which also appears on one of the publicly released photos, is somehow important for the plot. It also makes for a very memorable and striking image. And the little blood drop in the bottom is a subtle but smart reference to the topic of the movie.
All that said, this movie will probably be sold on the “Lyndsay Lohan as a stripper” hook. So I’m guessing the poster, which doesn’t even hint at that, won’t matter much. It is still a nice poster tough.

New International Transformers Posters 2007-05-26 17:55:12
My main worry about the Transformers
movie was that they wouldn’t be able to make the robots look right. The trailers, posters and photos I have seen so far have assuaged me of that fear. These new posters bring some of it back tough.
To me, the robots look strange in these new ones. The faces just don’t seem to fit together right. I think it is in great part because of the eyes, which seem off. And yes, the teeth in Megatron are weird.
Will we be able to empathise with those things? I don’t know. But since the rest of the material has been so good, I’m still cautiously optimistic.

Mr. Brooks Poster 2007-06-01 11:35:24
The message of the poster is “behind this dull facade there are many secrets.” Not only does it deliver this message clearly, it does so with a very memorable image. And it manages to showcase the star to boot.
I love the surrealistic feel of the poster. Kevin Costner taking a piece of his face off. It catches your attention immediately, and it almost forces you to look closer. And it’s something that you are likely to remember quite clearly, even if you just get so see it briefly.
Great poster.

Joshua Poster 2007-05-31 20:42:27
I kind of like this poster. The movie is all about one very creepy, very precocious kid. The very large painting of the kid, so well dressed, with the actual kid staring at it does a good job of telling us that he is not your average child, and that he probably has a big ego and big plans. The coldness of the whole image matches the coldness in that stare, and gives further hint that this might be a strange and possibly dangerous person. And the whole thing has a creepy vibe.
That said, I think that the colors and design of the image might make this poster a little bit dull to look at. It doesn’t stand out enough. And if one doesn’t already have a clue about the movie’s story, the poster might leave one a little puzzled about it.
Still an interesting poster tough.

Knocked Up Posters 2007-05-30 21:29:20
I really love this poster. It is, to some extent, just a head shot. But when coupled with the tagline, it’s the perfect image for this movie, telling you exactly what the film is about and why you might want to see it.
No, of course you wouldn’t want to have a baby with this guy, he looks completely unprepared to be a father. On the other hand, watching him trying to deal with his upcoming fatherhood might be very funny. And Seth Rogen is likable enough, so we also want to see him succeed, even if it takes some growing up.
The other posters are also nice. The second one does a good job of setting up the relationship aspect of the movie, showing that these two aren’t exactly madly in love with each other. The third one is mostly a visual pun, but it’s a decent one, and it makes for an attractive and catchy image.
But that first poster, that one would probably get me to see this movie even if a didn’t know anything else about it.

Hairspray Final Poster 2007-06-01 20:39:27
This final poster for Hairspray travels some of the same paths that the earlier posters travelled. Colorful! Fun! Fifties! Music! Star filled ensemble! And it does a good job of packing all that in. But with a musical, more than with any other kind of film, the trailer is the one that is going to have to do the majority of the selling. The poster does I nice job of reminding us of the film, but it won’t really make anybody interested on the film by itself.
