in a 9,950-seat stadium at the French Open.
You’ve watched Nadal from afar. You know all about his recently snapped 81-match winning streak on clay. The two consecutive titles at Roland Garros, too. So you have an idea of what to expect, right? Not one bit, according to Flavio Cipolla, the qualifier from Italy who lived the above scenario Thursday.

The road back to success has proved even more complicated for some recent standouts in Paris. Six players who won or reached the final between 2003-05 haven’t come close to doing so again.

By Douglas Robson, special for USA TODAY PARIS — When all nine U.S. men skidded out in the French Open’s first round and most of the women followed suit shortly thereafter, the 2007 American campaign in Paris
seemed stuck in the mud.
It might surprise, then, that the USA is still very much in the hunt for four of the five championships here.

FORGET strategy. Tonight’s French Open fourth-round match between Lleyton Hewitt and Rafael Nadal will be decided like two men fighting in a car park.
For all the talk of the right hander matching wits with the left hander, Hewitt and Nadal are the two most ferocious animals on the ATP Tour circuit, quite happy to use the racquet like a club and bludgeon opponents.

By Douglas Robson, Special for USA TODAY PARIS — Justine Henin has made privacy her security blanket.
During her rise to the top of women’s tennis, the 5-5, 126-pound Belgian hunkered down with a tight-knit entourage consisting mostly of her husband and coach. She rarely chummed around with peers or made eye contact with strangers, and she used her cool exterior to distance herself from the media and public.
But there are some signs she’s relaxing her guard.
