Going from bad to worse 2007-05-31 20:16:37
AUSTRALIA was diabolical last week, and even players notorious for having thin skin would struggle to argue with anyone - me included - who wanted to pan that performance against Wales as an absolute disgrace.
Fortunately, the Wallabies showed some guts to fight back from 17-0 down to eventually close it out after the siren.
The Wallabies have made a worrying habit of losing those close games in the past few years so the ability to resurrect victory from the ashes of an appalling more… Read more:Going

A FIJI rugby player and official have been refused Australian visas because they are part of the military that staged a coup in the Pacific island nation late last year.
Australia imposed a travel ban on members of the Fiji military after the coup, meaning that prop Alefoso Yalayalatabua and team manager Semi Rogoyawa were refused travel to Perth for Saturday’s Test match against the Wallabies.
A spokesman for Australia’s foreign affairs department said the pair had not been given more…

JOHN O’Neill indicated that Australian rugby is in for a big shake-up as he revealed his plan to get the game back to its former position of strength.
"We’ve got to really have a good hard look at our skill base, we’ve got to have a good hard look at our coaching and development," he said.
"We have to look at whether we have the cattle, because a lot of what is happening at the moment is just fundamentally a lack of basic skills."

OUTSPOKEN New South Wales selector Bob McCarthy has backed calls for more former Origin greats to be called into camp as motivators before game two of the series in Sydney next week.
McCarthy said the formula of having "FOGs" in official positions was a winner for the Maroons.
"They’ve got Bobby Lindner, they’ve got Gene Miles, they’ve got Choppy Close, they’ve got Trevor Gillmeister, they’ve got the hooker bloke, Steve Walters," McCarthy said.

Odd night in store for Tuqiri 2007-06-06 16:41:47
AGAINST his country of birth, on an unfamiliar wing and with a ball in his hand - the return of Lote Tuqiri to international rugby will be strange on a number of levels.
After almost a month of individual work with Australia strength and fitness guru Jason Weber, the Waratahs finisher will belatedly join the international season against Fiji on Saturday after being named in Australia’s starting XV by coach John Connolly.
And while admitting to frustration at not being involved in more…
Carroll relishes hardman tag 2007-06-06 16:36:11
QUEENSLAND second row Tonie Carroll
will “love” going to Telstra Stadium next week as New South Wales’s Public Enemy No.1, Maroons prop Petero Civoniceva said yesterday.
Blues selector Bob Fulton suggested the Brisbane lock should have been sent off for his tackle that broke the nose of Origin debutant Brett White early in game I, while Bob McCarthy reckoned the veteran big hitter should have been "made to pay".
That spice adds up to Carroll being a marked man more…
Odd couple building foundation 2007-06-06 16:33:32
THEY are Queensland’s equivalent of the odd couple
, but the combination of Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston is one that appears capable of leading a new Maroons dynasty.
In a warning to their New South Wales counterparts, Smith said he and Thurston were just beginning to form a strong hooker-halfback combination and had only scratched the surface of what could be achieved.
Polar opposites off the field, their differences appear to complement each other on it.
Smith is a thinking more…

Horwill answers call to arms 2007-06-06 07:03:11
THERE was little that was memorable about Queensland Reds’ horror 92-3 Super 14 defeat at the hands of the Bulls last month.
But one of the few shining lights was Queensland second rower James Horwill waging war on the huge South African forwards.
It was an effort as doomed as Gallipoli and almost as ill-planned. Horwill was recklessly out of control, wreaking destruction in all the wrong places and all the wrong ways and in the end it came as no surprise when he was sent to the sin more… Read more:answers
A bit more champing for Hugh 2007-06-06 07:01:14
HUGH McMeniman’s injury-blighted season took another frustrating turn yesterday.
Just when the Queensland Reds utility forward figured he finally was ready to play, Australia coach John Connolly decided not to risk him in Saturday’s Test against Fiji at Subiaco Oval.
It’s testimony to how centrally McMeniman ranks in Connolly’s World Cup plans that he ruled him out of the Test, even though he trained strongly yesterday in Perth, if nothing else satisfying himself that he has more…
