SOMETIMES YA GOTTA LAUGH... 2006-10-26 01:42:00
Not that we agree with the ArkFam blog about the "kids" ad Asa put on the airwaves (we still think it's a reach) but they did link to this cartoon today, which we greatly enjoy and which brought much laughter.
It may be sooooo serious, but this one kind of lessened the tension today. The image is priceless.
OK, we know they're reactionary, and have become a straight-up campaign blog, we'll start reading ArkFam more often.

THOSE STEM CELL ADS... 2006-10-26 01:16:00 This grabbed the attention of my radio audience this morning after they learned that the political consultant to Fox News dinged the hell out of Rush Limbaugh who originally accused Michael J. Fox of acting, or failing to use medication in order to make a political point. The feedback (no surprise) was in support of Limbaugh. We still don't buy it, and what makes it worse now is the ad that has come from the other side. Yes, they have a perfect right to campaign for their point of view in the Missouri elections, and they have the perfect right to do the same thing they constantly criticize the other side for doing -- using celebrities to make a point.
However, we consider it telling that none of the celebrities we saw in the "counter-ad" suffers personal debilitation like Fox does as a result of Parkinson's disease. Does it make them any less truthful? Not in the least, but it does lessen the impact of the ad to some extent, and having Jesus (Jim C. from "Passion of the Christ
REBEKAH WRITES ON IMMIGRATION 2006-10-26 00:45:00
After inviting Green Party AG candidate Rebekah Kennedy to write about immigration, she graciously accepted our invitation. With much pleasure (although without any endorsement) we offer our first candidate-penned editorial on what has become a central issue in this year's general election....

In the late 1950s, my grandparents, like a lot of people in Arkansas got part of their living each year from seasonal work in cotton fields. Like most parents in those days, they took their children with them to the fields, including my mother, who later described to me a strange event she witnessed there. These were segregated cotton fields. On one side of the field were White workers, which included Latinos. On the other side were Black workers. Black and White children played together in the cotton fields, but adults remained separate, never speaking to one another. Black workers were paid less than White workers and resented it. White workers feared that t Read more:IMMIGRATION

Do Republicans care?
MONDAY MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-10-30 14:34:00 The papers have made their endorsements and they have chosen Mike Beebe in the Governor's race. Again, we'll talk with Republican Asa Hutchinson Wednesday morning, and post audio/video of that here. Here's your morning news...

HE SAID WHAT? 2006-10-31 10:35:00
Sometimes when the President opens his mouth, what comes out makes him sound like a bit of a weenie, if you'll excuse the observation. We're sorry, and we mean no disrespect to the office, but the guy says things most kids would get scolded over, and he's supposed to be an example...Mr. Bush campaigned in Texas and told his loyal followers that if Democrats win...
"terrorists win and America loses"
You gotta be kidding, right? This is so far over the edge that the fake campaign ads just under this post wouldn't surprise us if he really decided to run them on national television. Ever feel like you're living in a freakin' cartoon?
HOW YA LIKE THESE ADS? 2006-10-31 10:24:00
As long-time fans of campaign advertising, we couldn't help but include this SNL look at the ads you might see from the RNC in the coming week before the election. We are particularly fond of the Hillary monster. We'd like to see a Mike Beebe ad with Hill jumping out of his chest. And Asa already has a way with ads, so we think he could jump on the animated bandwagon with a few days left. This is just for fun, and we hope it makes partisans on both sides laugh a little.
BRILLIANT IN BATESVILLE 2006-10-31 10:14:00
OK, this article, courtesy of the Baxter Bulletin, has a little about a moron in Batesville who tried to use the bogus $100 bill you see in the picture (From the Batesville Guardian)to buy cigarettes. It has Pres. Clinton's name on it. Wonder what demonination, and what he might try to buy if it had GW's name on it. Pepto-bismol?Very weird stuff.

WEDNESDAY MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-11-01 14:35:00 Mike Beebe's fundraising numbers are spectacular. If anything, he'll win just by sucking the financial oxygen out of the race. Quite a few observers say that actually happened as early as the primaries. First, though, a man who had a stand-off with police, but managed to pass-out...here's the news...

WAY, WAY UP NORTH TONIGHT 2006-11-04 08:29:00
Howdy, all. Sorry for not posting for a couple of days. Right now I'm sitting in a room at the Sheraton in Anchorage, Alaska. It's about ten degrees outside on a very busy Friday night. The city is quite active, and a bit of a big place. Reminds me of an upscale Little Rock. I'm told it is moose mating season, and the bull moose become quite dangerous here. Spent some time today learning about the candidates who'd like to replace Governor Frank Murckowski (sp?).
Got a good look at the bay and at the mountains and mountain sheep climbing sheer rock walls. This place reminds me of the Rockies in Utah and Colorado, on steroids. In Utah, you don't have mountains rising straight out of the sea without beaches. I'm told there is a volcano nearby that occasionally acts up. It looks a lot like the picture I've included here -- my phone doesn't want to send the pics I took today, so I'll wait till later to do some of that. The hugeness, the overwhelming size of this
WHOA, JETLAG... 2006-11-04 18:51:00
It's not too often that one falls in love with a place in day. Last place I was this impressed with was the isle of Capri off the coast of Italy. Anchorage is simply one of the most majestic places I've seen on earth, and I've been around the block a couple of times. The Norwegian fjords are pretty impressive as well.
However, the three hour time difference (it's really about 9 a.m. here as I post) along with the switch back to standard time last week have me feeling a little lost. I've got the day to explore the area, not sure where to start or exactly what to do.
John A. asked whether this was business or pleasure - actually, JA, it's a little of both. Jeez, you guys would love the politics up here. They don't have a lot of sports - their minor league hockey team is the big ticket in town - so politics is the default, and these folks are campaigning like made. The Gov's race between Knowles and Palin is pretty hot. Imagine Mike Beebe v. Jim Holt. That's what this Read more:JETLAG
IS THE G-O-P ALSO G-A-Y? 2006-11-04 23:15:00
We hate to even bring this up, but the Republican Party has a problem with sexual identity. The whole "self-loathing" aspect of it is what seems so seedy. They may have a big tent, but a large part of it is apparently hidden in a corner or something. This was an interesting story from ABC News about a gay-porn producer who's contributed to the RNC...
The president of Marina Pacific, Nicholas Boyias, has personally contributed to the Republican party several times over the last few years, six times to the Republican National Committee. The donations range from $200 to $500 and total around $2,000, according to a search of federal election records.
The RNC would not comment on the donations from Boyias or from the porn industry in general.
A Marina Pacific spokesman said Boyias is a moderate Republican who supports candidates and causes on both sides of the aisle, though no contributions to Democrats were found in a search of federal election records. The company continues to sell A
MONDAY MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-11-06 14:41:00 So, I have returned from the Great White North, and I'm glad to be back home where the trees actually have some color this time of year. I had a pretty good trip, but it's time to get back to politics.
GENERAL ELECTION TOMORROW
TODAY MARKS THE FINAL CHANCE YOU'LL HAVE TO CAST AN EARLY BALLOT, MOST LIKELY AT YOUR COUNTY COURTHOUSE. THE GENERAL ELECTION TAKES PLACE TOMORROW, WITH MOST STATEWIDE OFFICES UP FOR GRABS. VOTERS WILL HAVE TO MAKE DECISIONS IN THE GOVERNORS, LT. GOVERNORS, ATTORNEY GENERAL AND AUDITOR RACES JUST TO MENTION A FEW. VOTERS IN THE THIRD DISTRICT ALSO HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION ON WHO WILL REPRESENT THEM IN CONGRESS. VOTERS ALSO HAVE TO DECIDE IF THEY'D LIKE TO APPROVE A 250-MILLION DOLLAR BOND ISSUE TO BENEFIT HIGHER EDUCATION, AND VOTERS WILL SEE A PROPOSED STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO LEGALIZE CHARITABLE BINGO.

ELECTION RESULTS AS OF 9:30 P.M. 2006-11-08 04:48:00
You didn't think we'd ignore election night, did you? Traffic is very busy right now on the websites tracking things, so we'll give you a quick couple of links
to sites that update -- KFSM's site is pretty up-to-date as of now. That site shows the Dems -- yes, including Woody Anderson, winning their races with still a small portion of the night's returns reported. It looks as if both ballot issues -- the education bond and the charitable bingo -- have strong early support. We haven't heard of any major problems so far at the polls, but you can report them to us here throughout the evening.
Feel free to give us results or give us updates as the night continues -- we now return to Matthews and Olbermann on MSNBC for continuing coverage of the national results, which seem to be swaying toward a Dem victory as well.

ELECTION MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-11-07 14:27:00 Time for you to exercise your franchise and make a decision about the direction of both the state and federal governments. Do you want to "stay the course" or do you think it's "time for a change?" Yeah, we know it sounds a little stale at this point, but here ya go...here's your election morning news...
VOTE, YOU JERK
WELCOME TO ELECTION DAY 2006 - IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY, YOU'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO CAST YOUR BALLOTS TODAY IN A SERIES OF STATEWIDE AND LOCAL POLITICAL RACES. YESTERDAY, THE LAST ACTUAL DAY OF THE CAMPAIGN, THE CANDIDATES MADE A FINAL SWING ACROSS THE STATE TRYING TO GET OUT THE VOTE AND CONVINCE UNDECIDED VOTERS TO MAKE A CHOICE.

THE GOVERNOR'S CANDIDATES, DEMOCRAT MIKE BEEBE AND REPUBLICAN ASA HUTCHINSON CROSSED THE STATE VISITING HIGHFILL, JONESBORO, LITTLE ROCK, PINE BLUFF AND TEXARKANA. LATEST - NEW WINNERS TONIGHT 2006-11-08 06:36:00 We have a couple of updates as of 11:29 p.m.
New winners declared tonight:
Bill Halter (D), Lt. Gov.,
Dustin McDaniel (D), AG,
Charlie Daniels (D), Secy. State,
Rep. Mike Ross (D), 4th District Congress
More as we get them.
OUCH, THAT HURTS! 2006-11-08 06:27:00
OK, it was a "spirited" campaign, and pretty nasty toward the end. Asa Hutchinson conceded tonight, and Mike Beebe is the new G-O-V.
Our buddy Baber, who writes on these pages from time to time, has a digital arts business, and has started vending these snappy little bumper stickers. He's asked us to put one of them up, so we will "concede" to him and place an order.
Tough loss, and we haven't seen much posting in the state's conservative blogosphere tonight, but we expect more tomorrow.
Time to get back to the cable...
You know, after getting labelled as "sore losers" for the past 10-odd years, perhaps the Dems have a reason to be "sore winners" now.
GOOD MORNING, MADAM SPEAKER... 2006-11-08 06:16:00
CNN and NBC both call the House for the Dems, meaning Rep. Nancy Pelosi (we stole this pic from the Freepers, but thought it looked so good here, we couldn't resist...as they say, put that in the ol' pipe and smoke it) will become the first female House Speaker in American History.
The Dems have swept all the races in NY State.
Lieberman wins in Connecticut but will caucus with Dems in the Senate.
Get ready for the subpeonas to fly and hearings to start on the war as soon as we arrive in January.
In Arkansas, Asa Hutchinson concedes defeat to Mike Beebe, the new Governor-elect.
Dems within 3 seats of taking control of the Senate at this point, with something like 4 races too close to call, and a possible recount in the Virginia Senate race between Macacca and Jim Webb.
Get ready for some big changes, America.

UPDATE 10:45 P.M.
Asa Hutchinson just conceded the Gov's race to Mike Beebe. The Democrats continue to post strong results statewide, but Woody Anderson has fallen behind a couple of thousand votes with about half the precincts reporting so far. Both ballot issues have a nearly overwhelming lead, and in the Lt. Gov's race, Bill Halter has a strong lead as well over State Sen. Jim Holt. Not many suprises so far, but we'll continue to watch the 3rd District Congressional race for any unexpected outcome.

"MORNING IN ARKANSAS?" 2006-11-08 07:48:00
IN FOCUS COLUMN
-- Don Elkins
-- Wednesday, November 8, 2006
(FAYETTEVILLE)- I'll "eat my hat" later if things change, but as I write this, it looks like we've wrapped up most of the local elections this campaign cycle. Nationally, the Democrats reclaimed control of the House of Representatives, and we remain wondering if they'll do the same in the Senate, with the outcomes of the Senate races in Missouri, Virginia, Montana and to a lesser extent Tennessee still undetermined.
However, we did hear a resounding message from most of the voters in Arkansas. Across the board in the constitutional races, Democrats took control and retained control of the legislature as well. We voters thought it OK to approve $250-million worth of bonds for higher education and also gave sizeable nod to legalized bingo (at least in Church or at the fire station) after a long fight - State Rep. Shirley Borhauer's last hurrah as she faced a race for an aldermanic seat in the new town o
WEDNESDAY MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-11-08 15:09:00 You, the voters have spoken. As one of my callers this morning, David, who identified himself as an independent, said -- you sent a message that you were tired of hubris, of smugness and of those who claim to have a "mandate" to do certain things in government. Actually, we're still trying to figure out what message the voters were sending. Here's the news....

RUMMY? YER OUTTTTTTTAAA THERE! 2006-11-09 06:50:00
Ah, the first bloodletting from the Bush White House comes in the form of a less-than-contrite Donald Rumsfeld getting his walking papers today. Unfortunately, as some in the GOP have said, this should have happened a week ago. Here's the statement released today by Senator Blanche Lincoln. She'll appear on our LiveLine 'til 9 segment in the morning to talk about the election results, and about belonging to the majority party in the Senate...
Washington - U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) released the following statement upon the resignation of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld:
"The civilian mismanagement at the Pentagon in regards to the war in Iraq has cost us dearly in the lives of brave men and women as well as influence around the world. President Bush has finally heeded the advice of several respected generals and heard the voice of the American people that we need a new direction in Iraq and the global war on terror. The nomination of Robert Gates gives the Unit
LETTER FROM THE NEW GOVERNOR 2006-11-09 06:47:00
We think most of us agree that this letter sets the proper tone for the new administration in Little Rock. This is a note sent to Beebe supporters today...
I am honored by the trust that the people of Arkansas have bestowed in me as our next governor. Over the past 18 months, I've traveled to every part of our state, working with people of every background and every political stripe, to craft a positive vision to move Arkansas forward. In January, we will begin the long process of making that vision a reality.
In January, the son of a single mother, raised on the tips she made as a waitress, will be sworn in as governor. That doesn't happen without a lot of help. I want to thank my family, the staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly for our campaign and most of all, the voters who have entrusted me to serve our state for the next four years.
Mr. Hutchinson ran a hard and strong campaign and he should be commended for his passion. Like in any campaign, there were tough exchang
G.O.P. - END OF THE ROAD... 2006-11-09 06:37:00
It's been an interesting day for the state's Republican faithful. We'd say the best way to take the temperature of those individuals is to visit the ArkFam website and read the comments. Quite a bit of recrimination going on this day-after-the-election in which we saw the Democrats sweep the state constitutional offices and also saw the Democrats seize control of both the House and the Senate (late breaking tonight gives the Virginia Senate race to Jim Webb.) Now, party members are starting to ask themselves who will lead the party in Arkansas. Clint Reed, the man at the top, faces tough questions, and we tend to think he's about to join the vast unemployed in America. His job is about to be outsourced by the party faithful. You can bet he knows that too, judging by this email that went out to Republican supporters today...read on...

THURSDAY MORNING NEWS BRIEFING 2006-11-09 14:55:00
The elections may have ended (except in Benton County) but now partisans will have to deal with the fall-out over the expressed will of the voters. That makes up a lot of our news this morning...
WILL PARTIES WORK TOGETHER?
WITH THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS MOSTLY OVER, AND DEMOCRATS IN CONTROL OF BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE, ARKANSAS' FOUR U.S. REPRESENTATIVES ALL WON THEIR RE-ELECTION RACES AND WILL RETURN TO THE NATION'S CAPITOL. ALL SAY THEY HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH A LOT IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS.
