Ask Carl: Permalinks, The Best and how to Redirect 2007-05-12 05:40:06 Today, I’ll be launching a new feature of this blog. Thanks to Yvonne Russell of Grow Your Writing Business for suggesting it. She reviewed my blog 3 weeks ago on a different manner. It wasn’t that ordinary review that I get everyday, she gave some suggestions and criticisms. Believe it or not, I love hearing to those It’s just like a way of letting me know the things that you want me to improve.
But what I really like is her last suggestion about a new feature called “Ask Carl” where you can submit a question and I can answer it on a post. Even though I’m not that good and all, I’ll try my best to answer every question you ask me. We will be doing this post on a weekly basis about every Saturday (+ . I really loved the idea and for suggesting it, she gets the chance to ask the first question.
Here are her questions:
My current permalink format is “?p=193″. I know I should change this in the WP admin panel. I guess my question has 2 parts.

Leverage your knowledge (or lack thereof) to make money online (Part One) 2007-05-10 05:12:47 At present there are many bloggers with their own theory on how you can monetize your blog and earn a stable income from it. Some of their theories and / or strategies are indeed very unique, but perhaps too unique – ie. the strategy that has worked for them might not work for anyone else.So how then do I dare to publish a post with this particular heading? What makes my strategies and theories so darn special you might ask? Well, I’m not in the game of giving away complete strategies to make money online
(I don’t even make money from my blog – as it is ad-free, but only because I make enough from my freelance work), but I like to publish thought-provoking articles to inspire a few of you to come up with their own strategy, unique to your own blog.
I might just add, that although my blog is not monetized, it doesn’t discredit any of my thoughts on the matter, since I’m a very keen promoter of my blog and there’s an obvious correlation between an increase in traffic and in Read more:Leverage
Blogging Tips - Take Your Blog to The Next Level! 2007-05-09 15:03:14 I didn’t expect Kevin would order a ReviewMe review, but after he sent me this e-mail:
…At the moment I’m looking for some authors to give the site a different perspective. I’ve been reading your blog and think that a 13 year old’s perspective would be an interesting read for some people…
I said to my self: “Wow another blogger who invited me to guest post!” after reading the mail, I didn’t reply first just to think about the offer. Fortunately, I checked my ReviewMe account that day (I don’t check my account daily because I really don’t get that much offers ) and hey a new offer! I quickly checked it and found out that it was from Kevin of Blogging
Tips. So I thought “Hey, This guy’s serious, so maybe I should really blog for him” That made up my mind to accept the guest post offer and also the review offer.
Who is Kevin?
So, here he is, meet Kevin Muldoon a Mathematician (Wow! You must be a genius ) and a Web Designer, a 27 year-old blogger f
Alexa Rankings Reached Heaven with the Help of… 2007-05-09 10:37:25 As I made this train I really didn’t think that it would reach a milestone and would be a great viral marketing tactic. I didn’t expect it to be that viral. I just thought that I would get a couple of links and that’s that, but it’s not! I underestimated it. Up to now, I’m still getting links from the train everyday and getting hits from the redirect as well.
Guess what? With the help of the train, my Alexa
rankings jumped from 70,000 to 20,000 ! Also, according to Google Analytics, my traffic increased around 5% just when I started the train.
What I learned about making trains
There are a lot of link trains available as of this day. And many people have invented new ones too. Joining the train or inventing one has been a good source of backlinks and a bit of traffic. So, give it a try?! It would just take you a couple of minutes but a reward of a milestone.

Things You Must Know About Links 2007-05-08 16:35:50 This article was contributed by Garry Urbi of gurbi.blogspot.com
Recently, I watched a training CD about Search Engine Optimization by James
Gonzales and it made me realize the importance of links in my website.
Some of the things I learned are:
Links make it easier for engines to find your pages.
They also bring people to your pages.
Links are used as a measure of the site’s value.
They provide information about the page theypoint to.
These are the reasons why links are important in a website. Search engine robots follow the link and they are indexed in their listings. For people, links bring people to your pages especially if they are interested about the link information. Links are also treated as a reference and it is a must if the information or idea you are discussing is from another source. One of the three factors that is important when optimizing your website is the link popularity. It is a ranking score based on the number of incoming links. The more links, the better th
5 Things Eddie Guerrero Taught Me About Blogging 2007-05-07 12:57:17 I just watch wrestling to kill my time. But this morning, bees were mumbling on my head saying: “Hey, wrestlers and bloggers are kinda related, you know. They become champions, and they make friends”. So that gave me an idea to make a post about the former WWE champion, Eddie
Guerrero. Why him? Just read on
1. Always have a heart of a champion
Don’t stop blogging even if it seems you are failing. All bloggers fail. But what makes the great bloggers successful? They don’t stop from blogging, they try and try again.
Take Colonel Sanders (Founder of KFC) for example: Did you know that when he tried selling his chicken recipe, he got 1009 no’s before he got his first yes? You just have to have the guts in blogging because it really takes time. Blogging
is not a “get rich quick scheme”
2. Start small
Don’t be a perfectionist. You can start small. Don’t wait to get the perfect design, the perfect page. You won’t finish many things. In the internet, everythin

Look! Spiderman Taught me 5 Things About Blogging! 2007-05-13 17:40:36 After watching all 3 Spiderman
movies, I’m stuck here, thinking of something that would entertain you while reading this post. But wait a sec, is Stan Lee (Creator of Spiderman) a blogger ? I mean, look at Spiderman, if you ask me, I would consider him as a complete metaphor with blogging. Just my opinion though Anyway, enjoy these 5 things Mr. Spiddy taught me about blogging:
Wear your costume
Aside from his powers, what makes Peter Parker Spiderman? People love the red guy with a weird face when they see him flying around and climbing buildings. But when people see someone flying around without the costume, would they love it? I think they won’t, and most likely they would be afraid thinking if it’s a bad guy.
Costumes or so called “brand” is very important when it comes to blogging (Heck, even on an online business and offline!). Like what I said before the internet is a very huge place. There are many blogs roaming around, so a blog’s brand is very importa Read more:Blogging
Leverage your knowledge (or lack thereof) to make money online (Part Two) 2007-05-15 13:17:38 This is the second part of the post - if you haven’t read part one, read it here.
So just to sum up the first part of this post – I believe that it is possible for a blogger to create his / her own expert status, irrespective of whether they truly are an expert. In Part One, I mentioned a few theories on why this is indeed the case, but now you might ask how you can achieve this status.
This is definitely not a “How to”-post or a “Step-by-step Guide to Success”, but merely a few general points that bloggers will need to attend to if they are to establish themselves as experts. It is possible that some of these might not be applicable to you, since it is very general in order to suit most bloggers’ needs.
Painting the picture. The is probably the most important part to consider – the image you decide to portrait to the online
community will build the perception they have of you. So being (and coming across as such) self-confident and professional, will go a long way in Read more:Leverage

Ask Carl: How to Make 3d Crystal Buttons - Photoshop Tutorial 2007-05-21 06:56:18 Last week I launched the AskCarl feature thinking that it would be a great success. But I was surprised seeing nothing but dirt on my mail box this past week that wants to ask a question and participate to this new feature. Special thanks to Techzillo who dropped me a comment asking how did I make those 3d crystal buttons.
I didn’t waste any time and made a tutorial (To keep the new feature alive! ). So, here it is, enjoy!

Don’t Let Them Get Away! Convert Them into Regular Readers with These 5 Tips 2007-05-19 13:19:05 Admit it, we all want loyal visitors to read our blog. Loyal visitors are easier to convert into buyers, loyal visitors would most likely promote you, for FREE! Though the truth is, it’s very hard to keep an ordinary internet “surfer” to come back and read your blog. Therefore, keep these tips handy to convert those “surfers” into regular, loyal readers:
Pop-out Contests
Ever wonder why Mr. Chow holds tons of contests every month? What’s in it for him aside from the backlinks he gets? I mean he could sell his Microsoft Zune and just use the money to buy him quality backlinks.
But to those who hate JC, don’t underestimate him cause smart Mr.Chow does some pretty good job. He gives away something he doesn’t need (Microsoft Zune) in exchange with what he wants, Exposure! Even though he may not get as much quality backlinks, he still gets loads of exposure in the process which drives traffic to his blog and due to the fact that he holds contest dozens of times, those driven Read more:Convert

What Makes YOU, a Successful Blogger? 2007-05-24 00:30:46 Upon reading my Feed Reader this hot afternoon, I asked myself: “What do these guys have that made them successful in such a way?! What do they have that we don’t?” So I’ve been doing a little research and got some stuff on my head. Just to give a little reason what do these successful guys have.
Brand, brand, brand – I told this tons of time because honestly, the brand really matters. It’s just like the foundation of a company. Take Coca Cola for example: They had this new formula that got an A++ on the taste test (Better than the original) but when they sold it in the market, it failed, people still buy the same old Coke they love. Why? Because they got used to the same old Coke. It’s not the taste that matters. It’s the brand.
And by the way, did you know that in various taste tests, Pepsi almost always won over Coke? But… Coke almost always outsold Pepsi in every country. Brand. Brand.
It’s the same as in blogging. Actually I already have a post about this So t Read more:Blogger
5 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know About Blogging 2007-05-29 05:37:30 Many bloggers think that blogging is easy as a piece of cake and Many bloggers think that they can get rich via blogging in just a matter of months. But are you sure that those are true? Check out these 5 things I’ve compiled when I was doing my morning ritual (Again Hehehehe ). You probably didn’t know about these things:
1. Blogging
is not a get rich quick scheme
Most people think that if they blog and post everyday, they’ll get rich quick (Because they see a lot of problogger’s income increasing every month). But the truth is, you won’t. Blogging isn’t a “get rich quick scheme” If you want some proof, dig the archives of those money making blog and you’ll see that they were blogging for years. Yes, years with the “s” not months, not a year, but YEARS.
2. It’s not that easy to blog
I confess, I thought blogging was easy when I first started. I thought that all it takes is to write an article everyday and post it. But after months of blogging, I star Read more:Probably

AskCarl: How to Add AdSense to a WordPress blog? In Various Situations 2007-05-28 06:24:47 John e-mailed me a while ago asking me on how did I place AdSense to my WordPress blog. Too bad John didn’t have a site to show me. Anyway I’ll post here my tutorial on how to add Adsense into a WP blog.
Adding AdSense After Post Titles
Let’s go on the basics first. For example: You want to add a 336 x 280 AdSense block below you post title. Open your index.php then look for the part that looks like this:
And if you want to wrap that block, like most blogs do. Add a div into the Adsense code that may look like the one below:
Just adjust the margin that suits your blog design best and of course you could also change the float to “left” or “right”.
Some have situations adding an AdSense unit on their first post but not on the second (I used to do this before ) to do that, open your index.php then look for something like this:
We’re not done yet! Look for this on your index.php:
Then place this on the part that says “****Your Adsense Code goes here**

The Importance of setting Goals and How 2007-06-01 05:12:27 I had a chatmate on gmail a month ago who was asking for some advice on his new blog. Of course, I answered yes and asked him a question: “What are the goals in this new blog?” What shocked me is that he just laughed and answered me with we “nothing”
LOL, who needs Goals
?!
Why are goals important then? Just pause for a moment, and think about your childhood. Remember those days that you used to say “I want to be a doctor when I grow up mommy, or maybe a race car driver, or, or…” We used to have tons of dreams and goals when we were a child because we always think that everything can be done. But when we reach puberty, we usually think that it’s hard and there’s no way we can achieve it. The reason you lost that faith is because you didn’t set a goal.
Just like in blogging or an online business. If you set goals, more likely you’ll be successful because you follow a direction. Goals are like maps for race car drivers. It helps them got to some place they like, li
Hard Work Really Does Pay Off… I’m on Page 2! 2007-05-31 09:20:40 Just 4 months of blogging with 2 months of SEO, I’m finally near my goal. My blog is sitting under page 2 of Google.com results with the keyword “make money online” just beside 2 net legends! Check out the screenshot:
And when I checked on google.com.ph (My country ) I ranked no. 8 on the first page! Wow, my hardwork really does pay off.
Anyway, if you haven’t noticed, John Chow’s blog ranked down to no. 38 with the same keyword. So is this a new algorithm? Or just John Chow bombing Google?
Errr… Google bomb?
If you still don’t know. Google ranks sites higher if there’s an anchor text used. For example, 30 sites links to you with an anchor text of “Handsome” Chances are, Google will should rank you higher for that keyword.
Of course, if you abuse this, Google will flag you. You know what happens when Google flags a site So it’s really handy to vary your anchor text, so Google won’t flag you and hey, you might as well rank high on those “other” anchor t
How to Dig Money Online from Adsense’s Firefox Referral Program GoldMine 2007-06-05 07:56:05 Most AdSense publishers only use the “AdSense for Content” products when monetizing their site. But did you know that there’s a hidden goldmine?! Stop and think about the Firefox
