Do not buy Gas on May 15th and lower gas prices!!! 2007-05-10 03:23:34
I’ve been getting several of these messages today, so I figured I might pass it on. Maybe we can make history and make May 15th the day to not buy gas and also use less gas.
Fwd: DO NOT Buy as May 15th. If nobody buys, the gas company loses 2 billion & the next day they will drop the price 35 cents, it worked in 1997, pass it on!

How many cellphones are going to waste everyday? 2007-05-09 04:14:40
Wow, 426,000 cellphones are going to waste
everyday! I know I am guilty of this as I’ve switched my phone about 3 times in the last year or so. But to keep up with all the technology and fast internet access, that’s probably what you gotta do. Maybe I can sell off all of my old phones.
Maybe the cellphone companies have to find a better way to disposing the cellphones or even better, let you trade your old cellphone for credit on the new phones. (But they won’t, they are too greedy)
The above picture is just a picture of how many 426,000 phones are when put into perspective.
Artist Chris Jordan thought that this number was just too big to imagine, so he decided to put it into perspective for you. To get an idea of the magnitude of this image, the full size shot measures in at 5′ x 8′4″. He also tries to portray less gadgety things like the amount of gun-related murders or SUV sales.

Cool Recycled Bags 2007-05-07 20:01:06
Check out some of the creative uses of these recycled luxury bags from Baumm and some of the details of what each bag is made out of.
Some of the bags consist of market banners, street banners, and highway banners among some funny recycled materials. Save earth and get one of these instead of getting a brand name bag. (Well, at least I tried. ha)
I stumbled across an eye-catching booth featuring Baumm’s colorful recycled bags. Repurposing old vinyl posters and billboards to make bags isn’t a new trend (Freitag seems to be leading the way in Europe and now companies from Alchemy Goods to Feuerwear are doing similar things). But we love Baumm’s use of even more colorful and one-of-a-kind publicity banners, billboards, and advertisements reclaimed from the streets of Argentina and elsewhere.

Too Literal Translation - Unrecycle Trash Cans in China 2007-05-07 02:00:24
Cool, China
has a cool trash can for “unrecycling”. Speaking of, does that mean we are going to permanently put away trash? (Are they going to send it out into space or somethin’ ?) Well, it’s probably just a bad translator who was working on the logos for the trash can. Regardless, it’s kinda cool… At least there is a “recycling” can too.

Line will be one of the first eco-friendly cars from GM.
The hybrid version of Saturn Aura has the following features:
It gets 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. That’s 8 mpg better city and 5 mpg better highway than Aura with its most fuel-efficient gas engine, a 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 20 city/30 highway. Not 50 or 60 mpg, but a significant bump.

Take the Ecological Footprint Quiz! 2007-05-13 00:52:36 The Ecological Footprint
is a great invention. It’s a tool that lets you calculate what the land mass is needed to sustain your current lifestyle. It was developed by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees of the University of British Columbia. While their version is long and complicated and requires pages and pages of Excel Spreadsheets, here’s an internet based one that is quick and easy to use! Not only does it tell you how much land you need, it gives you tips and tricks as to how to reduce your impact.
Because, what’s the point of yelling at someone if you aren’t going to give them a way to make it better?
What are you waiting for? Go take the test now! Then come back here and share your results as well as your plans to reduce your impact!

Greening Apple! 2007-05-12 23:40:15 Steve Jobs of Apple
recently posted a green memo on their website. It outlines Apple’s plans to remove toxic chemicals out of production, such as lead mercury, cadmium and arsenic, increase the recycling of e-waste, as well as talks about their plans for a greener future.
E-waste is becoming one of the more prominent problems in terms of recycling. Electronic technologies are moving so fast that items are becoming obsolete before people can re-use them, let alone figure out a way to effectively recycle them. It’s great to see companies like Apple taking this project on board and moving towards a environment-friendly yet electronic-filled future. (God knows I couldn’t survive without my Mac!)

Go Green When You Travel! 2007-05-12 22:30:25 Bloomberg has an article about a hotel in California which has ‘gone green’ with low-flow toilets and shower heads and by installing solar lights!
The article starts:
Visitors to the Gaia Napa Valley Hotel and Spa won’t find the Gideon Bible in the nightstand drawer. Instead, on the bureau will be a copy of “An Inconvenient Truth,” former Vice President Al Gore’s book about global warming.
They’ll also find the Gaia equipped with waterless urinals, solar lighting and recycled paper as it marches toward becoming California’s first hotel certified as “green,” or benevolent to the environment. Similar features are found 35 miles south at San Francisco’s Orchard Garden Hotel, which competes for customers with neighboring luxury hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and Fairmont.

Wal-Mart going Solar! 2007-05-12 20:13:02 According to PR Newswire, Wal-Mart has launched a pilot project to determine if it’s possible to for Wal-Mart to become a solar powered business. 22 Wal-Mart stores are expected to produce 20kWh (kilowatt-hours) of solar power per year as part of this initiative. If successful, it is expected that Wal-Mart’s project will be one of the world’s top solar power projects.
Kim Saylors-Laster, VP for energy for Wal-Mart and Saylors-Laster says "we are taking aggressive steps towards our goal of being supplied by 100 percent renewable energy. The pilot project is yet another example of Wal-Mart's commitment to making decisions that are good for business and the environment"
I never used to equate Wal-Mart and green, but I guess I should start. What do you think?

EcoHangers: Hang your Clothes the Green Way! 2007-05-12 19:00:43 Over 3.5 billion hangers end up in landfills every year. That’s insane!
To combat this, the Hanging Network is producing 100% recycled hangers for dry cleaners and stores to use instead of those mangy and crease-making wire hangers everyone has. To pay for themselves, Hanging Network turned their product into a (literal) hanging advertisement in your closet. Check it out:
These hangers have been popping up at dry cleaners in San Francisco and New York City. Hopefully, they will take off in other large cities too. Why don’t you mention it to your dry cleaners next time? Just a thought!

Clinton to Deck City Halls in Green 2007-05-17 04:23:06 At the C40 Summit earlier today, former president Bill Clinton
announced that the Clinton Foundation is going to give a billion dollars (yes, you read that correctly!) to sixteen city halls around the globe so they can “go green.”
At the summit, Clinton said “if all buildings were as efficient as they could be, we’d be saving an enormous amount of energy and significantly reducing carbon emissions. Also, we’d be saving a ton of money.”Wired writes
The planned projects include replacing heating, cooling and lighting systems with energy-efficient networks; making roofs white or reflective to deflect more of the sun’s heat; sealing windows and installing new models that let more light in and keep the elements out; and setting up sensors to control more efficient use of lights and air conditioning.

Organic Farming Hot in Canada 2007-05-17 03:00:02 A new report by the federal government suggests that the organic farming industry in Canada
is growing at an immense rate.
Thunder Bay’s Chronicle Journal writes
According to figures released Wednesday in Statistics Canada’s 2006 agriculture census, 15,511 farms reported growing organic products last May. That includes those that have been certified organic by an authorizing agency, those that are in the process of getting certified, and those whose operators simply declare that they’re organic.
The number of certified organic producers increased by nearly 60 per cent from 2001 to 3,555 in 2006. Field crops such as wheat and barley are the predominant certified organic crops, and Saskatchewan has about one-third of all the certified organic farms in the country.
The article discusses how organic agriculture has really branched out into two major streams — little, with local, organic farmers at the farmer’s market and big, with the big-box stores carrying entire Read more:Farming

Square One Organic Vodka 2007-05-17 01:00:39 Square One Vodka is a “social and socially conscious” drink that is the world’s first 100% certified organic American rye Vodka.
Founded by Allison Evanow, Square One Vodka is consistently recognized across the world as a high quality vodka.
Their website states
Vodkas are prized for their purity, so the idea of an organic vodka was both viable and exciting…Thus Allison set out to create the greenest clear spirit yet. And she started at…square one, with the purest ingredients she could find: pristine spring water from the Teton mountains and organically certified North Dakota-grown rye. The ingredients are so pure that Square One obviates the need for multiple distillation, emerging through a single pass in the distiller with its unique flavor profile intact.
Additionally, the packaging and actual process of making the vodka are designed to minimize waste and maximize efficiency and quality.

Motorola Launches Wind and Solar Powered Network 2007-05-17 00:00:11 Motorola Inc has launched the world’s first wind and solar powered wireless network in Namibia.
This program is a trial run to see if running cellular phone and other wireless systems running on alternative energy is a feasible plan for other, more concentrated markets. (Like ours!)
Motorola writes
This solution provides comprehensive voice and data communications using an efficient and reliable alternative to the costly roll out of electricity in remote areas. It is an ideal solution for both emerging and developed markets, providing cost-effective, environmentally friendly power to enable wireless communications to a wider audience.
Motorola believes that Namibia’s lack of technological infrastructure, but tons of sun, environmentally conscious government and growing economy is the perfect place to launch the pilot project. MTC is partnering with the GSM Association to implement this project.

Adrien Grenier is a Great, Green Guy! 2007-05-16 21:00:54 Adrien Grenier, star of HBO’s Entourage, recently came clean with his green-loving ways. Not only has he recently installed photovoltaic panels on his house for solar power, and installed recycled denim as his house’s new installation, he is working closely with Lauren Gropper of HGTV to make the Entourage set as eco-friendly as possible, and does things like makes all his fellow cast members get together to watch An Inconvenient Truth.
Ecorazzi writes
He’s adamant that being eco “doesn’t mean sacrifice” - we just need to replace the things that we consume with products that ultimately improve our quality of life. “The proof is in the pudding,” he says, “it’s actually improved my health and my lifestyle.” Though he doesn’t deny that building eco is an upfront investment which pays off over time.

University Eco-Dorm 2007-05-16 20:00:31 The newest dormitory at Plymouth State University
in New Hampshire, Langdon Woods, recently received a LEED Gold Certified Standing for its design and construction.
The building has low-flo and slo-flo faucets and shower-heads, multiple flush settings for the toilets, waterless urinals, is heated via steam heat, an a recycling ventilation system. The building itself was built out of 10% recycled material, 20% local material and it expected to save the university $250,000 dollars a year in energy and heating costs.
Since opening in 2006, the building has reduced its energy consumption by 60%, water use by 30%, recycles 75% of the waste that is produced in the building, and is filled with educational displays so the students and the surrounding community can learn about the impact their lifestyles — and what living in this building is doing to minimize this impact.

Earthships! 2007-05-16 19:00:36 New Consumer wrote an article recently about Michael Reynolds, a man who designs an builds “earthships”. His companies, Earthship Brighton and Earthship USA have been building these uniquely designed homes for over thirty years. Reynolds describe earthships to as “independent vessels to sail on the seas of tomorrow,” it actually is a modern, eco-friendly home!
New Consumer, more practically, explains Earthships:
A more practical description might be self-powering and regulating dwellings with passive solar (building the homes orientated towards the sun to make maximum use of it as a source of heat and lighting), part-earth sheltered and heavily insulated with tyres.
The homes are designed to be a consistent temperature and require very little heating and cooling. The light and rainwater are collected through micro-renewable harvesting systems.
The best part? Reynolds and his crew are available for hire! To find out more, go to their website!
