Web Site Navigation & Design
2007-05-09 07:36:16
by Russell Arsenault It seems that one of the hardest things to get right in web design is creating proper layout and navigation. Sometimes a web site will be very rich in content, except that traffic will suffer due to poor navigational structure. In other words, navigation has become one of the key ingredients in developing sustainable, long-term traffic to your site. Your site tree: Often before you even get into the graphical aspects of your site, it is useful to think about the content that you will have for your site and brainstorm possible navigational schemes, otherwise known as site trees. These trees describe the way in which your site branches out into articles, products and services, and any other additional sections you may have. You would be surprised how different tree layouts can be created, but not all are created equal. As an example, let’s say that you have a site that has the following pages: Home page About us Products Services Contact Clients News General

The Web2.0 Concept Is Spreading Like A Bug
2007-05-08 06:44:45
by M. Markell The last few months the web2.0 idea has become a top subject in conversations between webmasters or marketers or people who deal with the web. A lot of these people who are utilizing the capabilities of the Internet to make money or create successful websites are planning on using the web2.0 phenomenon to build next generation, democratic, collaborative websites based on this popular concept. In fact, I foresee that this year alone will have the biggest number of web2.0-based websites come online. And I am sure that everyone and his/her brother will claim to have build the next hottest and coolest web2.0 website on the Internet. But this is not the case dear reader. Not all of these so-called web2.0 websites are actually implementing web2.0 technologies and ideas. It’s alarming how many webmasters and marketers are naming their new websites as “Web2.0 websites” or as “Next Generation Websites” when they just aren’t! We all use web2.0 we

Disabling AutoComplete On Forms
2007-05-07 05:19:53
by Michael Bloch An important issue raised at a recent ‘black hat’ conference was the security threat posed by the popular browser “autocomplete” feature - where users can have sensitive information stored in their browser cache in order to speed up completion of forms. While we can’t control our users browser settings physically, we can prevent this feature working at the form level on our own sites. The problem with the autocomplete feature is that it is very insecure - there are widely available free tools for grabbing that information from a users’ system. I won’t mention the name of the tools for lifting stored AutoComplete data for obvious reasons. While the autocomplete function is easily switched off by the user, many people still use this method for storing sensitive information; either because they don’t know how to switch it off, or they just don’t understand the risks. As a site owner, you can help protect users from the

15 Fixes For A Failing Website
2007-05-04 05:59:23
By Rick Sloboda If your website’s not performing, here’s what you can do to improve search engine rankings, engage visitors and convert more sales. 1. Align the site with your objectives Have your business objectives and goals changed since you launched your website? If so, then you need to revisit your website’s content to ensure it supports your current business needs. 2. Build Your Own Website
2007-05-03 07:08:39
Suzann Kale Build ing your own website is easier than it was even a few years ago. All you need are some good, basic instructions - that’s it. No going to special classes, hiring expensive people, or taking an axe to your computer. The Basic Steps 1) First, decide which will best meet your needs: a blog or a traditional website. Both can host ads. A blog is considered more informal, although you can put anything up there you want - photos, movies, advice, learning materials. Choose a website if you need to look professional, sell your services, or sell products. 2) Next, choose a package in which to put your content. Wordpress, Blogger, and Blogstream are just a few packages for blogs. Joomla is one of the main packages used for websites. The good news? They’re free. 3) Decide on your domain name and register it. You can register at many places, such as Dotster.com, GoDaddy.com, or Register.com. Each of these sites will take you through the steps, and make sure the domain n
