No Room for "Pet Issues" in the Democratic Big Tent 2007-05-10 20:01:05 When it comes to prosperity, fairness, equality, happiness and peace, it is safe to assume this is the type of goal we all hope we able to live in. The only difference, we all have a different idea of what all that means, therefore, we tend to choose leaders (politicians, activist, minister, etc) whose values [...]

The assault on critical thinking on university campuses 2007-05-14 18:49:37 Freedom of speech is one of the most basic rights that individuals enjoy and one that is taken granted. It is vital to the existence of democracy and the respect of human dignity. It is also one of the most vulnerable rights, because freedom of expression means the freedom to express one’s discontent with the [...]

To Brownfemipower: Una Amiga Con Mucha Corazón 2007-05-17 00:20:14 There are no words, really, to describe the degree of mixed emotions I feel at this moment knowing I that a great blogging friend might quit because of the lunacy that has taken over this country. I think this paragraph she wrote on a May 10 post says it all (from a Google cache):

Immigration Reform: Being Played For a Fool Again 2007-05-21 10:17:54 America is an idea, a set of beliefs about people and their relationships and the kind of society which holds the best hope of satisfying the needs each of us brings as an individual. Racist Theme Parties: Freedom of speech or freedom to hate? 2007-05-28 22:05:51 In the post-civil rights period, racial, ethnic and gender diversity has critical to our nation’s global competitiveness, national security and to our personal and community development. However, after decades of political and cultural conflict over the meaning of race and the persistence of structural racism in the US, new racial formations have developed. Racism has [...]

Fox News’ Minority Follies 2007-06-07 15:03:24 It really is not surprising to know that FOX News Channel does not respect minorities at all. The Immigration Human Zoo 2007-06-05 12:35:43 Since 9/11, protecting the American imperial “homeland” has become an essential priority for the Bush administration. The Immigration Bill is Defeated: Never Underestimate the Power of the People 2007-06-08 15:25:49 We have a cause to celebrate, the so-called Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill has been defeated. In an uncanny alliance, between grassroots efforts from conservatives and true progressives (immigration movement), the bill was defeated on a 45-50 vote; however, I highly doubt the conservatives will ever acknowledge it was both camps who defeated the bill.
“If so, [...]
To The Fallen Bloggers 2007-06-14 10:41:15 After a good nights rest, I really didn’t think my previous post held up to my standards and I am currently working on it as we speak. However, I felt I still need to pay tribute to the fallen bloggers of the true progressive blogosphere who have chosen to hang up their keyboards and walk away.
I have this feeling that the demise of Brittney Gilbert and her reason for quitting her job at Nashville is Talking due to a bunch of self-righteous self-aggrandizing faux “progressive” lynch mob is still rippling through blog land.
I have noticed there is a wave negativity spreading though the blogosphere, especially among people of color. This was of negativity have hit me too - feeling sad, feeling scared (who will be next, me?), and feeling defeated. Whenever this occurs, I am usually at a loss for words and the only way I know how to express how I feel about a certain situation is through a song. The only song that comes to mind right now is Don McLean’s American Pie Read more:Fallen
Guardsman Accused of Smuggling Immigrants 2007-06-12 13:19:01 Three members of the Texas National Guard were arraigned in federal court for subverting the very laws there were suppose to enforce (h/t to stormkite for bringing this to my attention). On Monday, Sgt. Julio Cesar Pacheco and Pfc. Jose Rodrigo Torres, both of Laredo, and Sgt. Clarence Hodge Jr. of Fort Worth, appeared before a federal magistrate on charges of conspiring to transport undocumented immigrants.
The three Guardsmen are assigned to border duties along the Texas-Mexico border as part of Operation Jump Start, President Bush’s initiative to place 6,000 Guard troops at the border to help local and federal authorities with immigration enforcement.
According to the criminal complaint, the arrests followed after a routine stop last Wednesday evening at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Cotulla in La Salle County, TX. National Guardsman Jose Rodrigo Torres was driving a white Ford passenger van when agents stopped the vehicle for an inspection. As the approached the van they f

Mobilization Around Texas 2007-06-15 12:50:39 This is something new I am going to try. I am wanting to have some type of event aggregator on here. There are event that are happening here in the US that we don’t really hear about or if we do it is after the fact. So for now I will post things up events that hear that are happening here in Texas
and I will go from there. To make this successful, I will need help from my readers, if you know of something, please let me know by using the contact form. The event does not have have to be a major. The purpose of this little project of mine is to give people another vehicle to get the word out about their event, whether it is a demonstration of one or one thousand people. This is an attempt to answer the age old question of “How do individuals even have a chance of being heard?” The act of dissent is a practice of self-realization of many individuals and is crucial for challenging unjust hierarchies and for promoting progressive change; and if used wisely it can move mou
Happy Juneteenth 2007-06-19 23:16:55 I almost forgot HappyJuneteenth
!!!
For those who don’t know what holiday falls on June 19, it is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Only 25 states in the US celebrate this day, Texas is one of them. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday started here in Texas.
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived on Galveston Island to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of its slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation was originally issued on September 22, 1862, which became effective date on January 1, 1863, Texas really did care to comply with President Lincoln’s order. So, General Granger was ordered to take possession of the state from Confederate troops and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation.
One of General Granger’s first orders of business was to read to the people of TX, General Order Number 3 which began most signi
El Nightwatchman 2007-06-19 14:34:52 Yesterday, I saw El Nightwatchman and it was kick ass. Tom Morello is very talented and it was nice to see the effect his music had on my parents. It sort of stirred up the old Chicano spirit that laid dormant in them for a while.
If Morello is doing El Nightwatchman, what about Rage Against The Machine you ask? No fear, in a recent interview with Drowned in Sound, it sounds very promising.
[Question:] And, in terms of Rage, do you see life beyond the upcoming shows with Wu Tang Clan this month and the one-off with Queens of the Stone Age in August?
[Tom Morello:]Right now we only have plans to do those, but that’s not to say we won’t play more shows beyond that…
This is what I think is happening. If it is true that Rage is coming up with a new album this summer, I honestly cannot see them quiting once their tour is done this year. My guess, they are taking a wait-n-see approach once their new album is released. If the album is a success, we will see a lot more of
Rising Blogging Insanity and Introspection 2007-06-17 23:06:46 Recently I came across an article, Beware the Bloggers’ Bile, in TIME Magazine by Joe Klein recently in which he wrote about the insanity that has taken over the Liberal/Progressive blogosphere. This of course is going well with Republican bloggers. In Klein’s piece, he expresses his concern of the recent criticism he is receiving from liberal bloggers recently:
A strange thing happened to me the day the House of Representatives voted to pass the Iraq-war-funding bill. Congresswoman Jane Harman of California called as the debate was taking place. “Look, I would love to have cast a vote against Bush on this,” she told me. “We need a new strategy, and I hope we can force one in September. But I flew into Baghdad [with 150 young soldiers recently]. To vote against this bill was to vote against giving them the equipment… they need. I couldn’t do that.” I posted what Harman said on Swampland, the political blog at Time.com, along with my opi Read more:Rising

The Green Card Draft: One Immigrant’s Nightmare is Uncle Sam’s DREAM 2007-06-22 23:28:38 We have always been told that US is land of opportunity where newcomers can achieve better lives for themselves and their families only if they persevere and work hard. One fear for those who are ardently pro-immigration have is that Congress may pass a policy that is intended to hurt the interests of an immigrant - legal and undocumented - who are trying to navigate through this country. Members of Congress have proposed heightened border security, increased enforcement of immigration laws, and even the criminalization of undocumented immigrants and those who help them.
Today, many Congressional leaders want to allow corporations and contractors to recruit hundreds of thousands of workers a year outside of the US and put them to work here on temporary visas. In fact, it is not only multinational corporations who would be benefiting from this bill; it would also be the military. A couple of days ago, Kyle from Immigration Orange informed of an of an article that was written in the Bost Read more:Nightmare

Senate’s Second Secret Immigration Bill 2007-06-21 14:07:32 In the midst of a polarized debate on immigration, politicians and the media continue to paint conflicting pictures of the influence of immigrants on our communities and the economy. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people cross the border between Mexico and the US without documentation. According to the Department of Homeland Security Office of Immigration Statistics, in 2005, over 1,171,428 immigrants were apprehended trying to cross the border into the US from Mexico. Although some people assume that all undocumented came here with papers, this is not the case. Many immigrates, enter the US with visas but have stayed longer than their visas authorized. Our current immigration policies leave millions of immigrants in the shadows, vulnerable to abuse and hardship because they lack legal documentation.
In an effort to address these problems, the Senate
hit a roadblock on June 7, when the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill that was being considered in the Senate was defeated. Sen Read more:Second
