Brother AliThe Undisputed TruthRhymesayers Entertainment
2007-05-03 16:33:39
By Blake Gillespie One of the few records to put a lasting smile on my face is Brother Ali’s The Undisputed Truth. It opens strong with “Whatcha’ Got,” asserting its intended gospel with black church organs, before some quick scratches flip the switch into a rocked-out banger that Ali proudly gets vicious on. It is Rock Box-esque in its sound, even when ANT drops a change-up for Ali to kick the “yes yes ya’ll” routine. If the album has one downfall, it is that it opens with that loud abrasive sound that Def Jam built its early line up around, then backs off for seven straight songs. It is not that these songs are weak offerings, but the drums get softer, reggae vibes get incorporated, and Ali tones his delivery down to soft spoken. It is a baffling digression from a sound that makes me want to RAWR like a dungeon dragon. Granted he is adapting to ANT’s production, which he does rather well, especially on songs like “Letter from the

Ralph “Soul” Jackson on the up, played Ponderosa
2007-05-03 16:16:00
Technorati Profile Ralph &ldquo ;Soul&rdquo ; Jackson hit up the Ponderosa Stomp, a New Orleans-based festival that “pays tribute to the unsung heroes of rock ‘n roll. Appropriately, Roky Erickson headlined the sixth annual festival, playing with the Explosives, the backing band he played with in the 1980s. Ralph “Soul” Jackson was a crate digger’s delight after his 1977 45 “Set Me Free” failed to sell, thanks largely to shady distribution deals. Now reissued under the Rabbit Factory label, Jackson has another hack at the credit he deserves. The lineup offered up some important clues as to what it takes to become an unsung hero of rock’n roll and soul. It’s good to insert an ambiguously important quotable between your first and last name (i.e., “Mr Big Stuff”), or to introduce yourself with lots of details, like ” Duo of Hill Country Guitarist” or “Chitlin Circuit Showman”. It also helps to be

Silber Hearts Mom - full album
2007-05-02 16:48:32
Amazing. Sometimes you just gotta quote: “Here at Silber, mothers have always had a special place in our heart. So we’re happy to finally get a compilation together to pay a little bit of the tribute mothers are so dearly due. Everyone has a different style of song to show their love from heavy metal (Wrong Brothers) to post-rock (Glissade, Electric Bird Noise) to noise (Moral Crayfish) to simply acoustic guitar (Remora). While most went the instrumental route, the songs with vocals by Plumerai & Miss Massive Snowflake show the tongue-in-cheek comedy that we all use to tell our moms we love them. So maybe you should stop reading this & call your mom & tell her you appreciate her.” Download the full album HERE.

Blonde Redhead Webster Hall, New York, NY 5.8.07
2007-05-09 15:04:48
Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead Fifteen years. This is when most bands start muttering to themselves about reunion tours. Formed since 1993, their first album released in 1995, (when they still had another female Japanese art student in the band to balance symmetrically against the Italian Pace twins), it took six more full lengths and more than twice those years, but last night they played to a sold out, fully engaged audience at Webster Hall. I was worried that the softer pop material from their new album, 23, would be boring live, but they managed to turn everything they played up to a head-nodable levels. That coupled with the enormous (and fully utilized) bass / subwoofers at Webster Hall ensured a high ceiling of intensity. Ah, married couples in bands. I was handed some numbers that may or may not be true, but Simone Pace and Kazu Makino have apparently been conjugally joined for seven years? And they’re in their fourties? I guess that’s possible. Anyway, if o

I’m From Barcelona announce North American cultural exchange program
2007-05-08 15:30:48
No, let’s not call this a tour. Not even a series of dates. This stopover in August is like an extended field trip for this 29-strong school (If only Beirut could conjure up 6 more volunteers, we could have a real clash of the nations). Think of it as, “Hey! We’re from Sweden, and these are our customary Swedish Indie Pop songs. What do you American s think?” “Well, hm-” “Ok bye!” AUGUST 04 Lollapalooza, Chicago IL 05 McCarren Park Pool, Brooklyn, NY Thankfully, the band’s playing a JellyNYC Pool Party at McCarren Park, not a pricey Live Nation gig.

Oxide and Neutrino back with independent release
2007-05-08 15:18:47
Oxide and Neutrino, two members of So Solid Crew, the UK Garage outfit most infamously remembered for the murder charges laid on Megaman (Dwayne Vincent), its founding member, have started a new record label and have a new album slated for June. While the crew earned its infamy three years ago, Oxide and Neutrino have, it seems, not put out anything new with Eastwest, their former album. 2nd Chance marks their first release (digital only) on their own independent label, Kemistree and Fizzicks, due out June 12, but with digital releases, who know how soon more tracks will be floating around. These two former stalwarts of the pirate radio scene in London have already released streams of the first single, “What R U”, a track reminiscent of that era that also carries some inflections of grime and electronica. Their myspace page has some tracks that could’ve slipped into J. Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds too. What R U:

The American Black Lung announce sophomore album
2007-05-08 15:17:48
Tucson-based The American Black Lung have been compared to 80s hardcore and 70s hard rock/metal, which makes them pretty comfortable bed fellows with contemporaries like Panthers or Das Oath, or any number of more mainstream acts on the Warped circuit, which they’ll be playing for a time during their summer tour. Sudden Departure of Vultures it out July 10th on Uprising Records. TRACK LIST 01 Behold The Mighty Galactus 02 Cufflinks 03 The Skyline Itself Is Alive 04 Call Me Animal 05 They Wept As They Drowned 06 At His Best 07 Doc Bollywood 08 Werewolves By Night 09 Born Of A Broken Man

Black Lips, Deerhunter, Manchester Orchestra, Snowden in heelarious/awesome MTV News sequence
2007-05-07 15:46:40
“Raising Hell in the ATL!” Bradford Cox: “There’s not an Atlanta sound, if it was, it’d just be dirty” Ignore John Norris’ CNN newsspeak voice and the frequent comments about Atlanta’s “cultural mash ups” and “mish-mashes” coupled with images of black and white people standing next to each other at shows, and this news piece is sort of a service to MTV’s regular landscape.

Start practicing your scenester death stare in the mirror, cuz you and hundreds of other Downtown costumes will be under the heat of the flash come May 27th, Motherfucker’s seventh anniversary party. While we’ve known The Faint would be headlining the event at Webster Hall, now we’ve got the juicy details to boot. Fishbone Agora Theater, Cleveland OH 5.9.07
2007-05-11 15:27:32
In general, Angelo Moore doesn’t visually fit into his surroundings. But Fishbone playing in-front of a white suburbanite crowd in the middle of Cleveland had an especially disjointed effect. Moore and the newly assemble Fishbone, save for original bassist Norwood Fisher, ripped into a jazz track, run ostensibly by Fisher’s walking bass line. During the introductory song, Moore began a somewhat disjointed poem about racism. When the track ended after each player took a solo, the band included an additional two horns on-top of Moore’s sax playing, the seven piece band diving directly into “Party at Ground Zero”. Almost twenty-two years after the songs initial release, it still lasts a bit too long, but also, without question, is able to make a crowd move. During the initial section of the song, as the dancers warmed up, Moore stalked back and forth looking for audience members to help with the chorus. He found some help, but also scared a rather young looking mall-punk girl i

Aesop throws another one on the table in August
2007-05-10 20:22:13
After nearly three years of film scores and workout tracks, it’s time for an LP. Enter None Shall Pass (or maybe don’t), out August 28th on Def Jux. Blockhead handles production again, with appearances from Cage, Breeze Brewin, El-P, Rob Sonic and… what’s that plaintive bah-ing? Sure high brow culture might label John Darnielle “America’s best non-hip-hop lyricist,” but Aesop ’s ready to toss the Mountain Goats crooner on the last track of his album? Curious for the folk hop mash-up that will presumably occur. TRACKLIST 01 Keep Off the Lawn 02 None Shall Pass 03 Catacomb Kids 04 Bring Back Pluto 05 Fumes 06 Getaway Car (ft. Cage and Breeze Brewin) 07 39 Thieves 08 The Harbor is Yours 09 Citronella 10 Gun for the Whole Family (ft. El-P) 11 Five Fingers 12 No City 13 Dark Heart News (ft. Rob Sonic) 14 Coffee (ft. Har Mar Tillman’s Sean Na Na releasing album, getting vomity?
2007-05-10 20:03:04
Sean Na Na is the ongoing “indie-rock” branch of the Sean Tillman empire that also includes his Har Mar Superstar persona and the accompanying vodka endorsements. The album, Family Tree -or- Must CoPe We, out on Dim Mak on June 5th, references both the tight-knit nature of Sean Na Na’s members, and drugs: Must CoPe We of course referring to “Coke-Peppered Weed Mustache.” Well, duh. Their myspace page is streaming a number of catchy and clean little pop tracks that fail in my estimation to be quite as messy and wretched as the release hopes: “When pressed to find a likeness to their sound the band would probably say they sound like early Elvis Costello and The Replacements throwing up on tape the morning after an all-night bender.” Maybe some people’s vomit has a poppier sheen than others… And besides, who needs the rough edges anyway. This stuff is as shiny as Tillman via Har Mar’s freshly waxed back, and that&rsqu

New Page France album
2007-05-10 19:40:43
Maryland’s Page France will release …And The Family Telephone on Suicide Squeeze Records on June 5th. Frontman and primary songwriter Michael Nau admits to the organic growth of the “band” from a songwriting project into its current manifestation as a full band collaboration. From Suicide Squeeze: “For the first time, it really feels like we’re a band,” Michael said of Page France. “…and the Family Telephone is definitely the most collaborative album that I’ve ever done. Everybody had their input and there are a lot of fingerprints on it.” The full album is available on AOL Spinner. The tracks are definitely more lush, gushing with the comfortable shared space that the band’s learned to inhabit. TRACK LIST 01 The Ruby Ring Man 02 Wet Dog Afternoon 03 Mr. Violin And Dancing Bear 04 Be My Pianist 05 Pigeons 06 Hat And Rabbit 07 A Belly To The Sea 08 The Belly In The Fish 09 Rooster And Its Crow 10 The Joker&rsq
