A damp day
2007-05-03 18:42:25
It’s been an embarrassing day for Chilli.  He had a slight ‘accident’ overnight and I had to spend the morning clearing up after him.  Poor Chilli, he’s obviously finding it hard to settle into his new home.  Chilli insisted that the pool of water was not what I thought it was and that someone (he blames Liz) had poured water over him last night.  I told him that it was wrong to make up lies and that telling tales will get him into trouble.  It’s been a rough week for the poor kid, but that’s no excuse for making up stories.  I put some music on to calm things down.  Chilli usually loves a bit of Simon and Garfunkel but when Bridge over Troubled Water came on he looked uncomfortable.  Very odd.

Breaking training - or not?
2007-05-02 13:43:07
Only a few days into his new regime and already Chilli has broken training.  I caught him making a deal with an unscrupulous gardener, who was trying to trick Chilli into using performance-enhancing drugs.  I gave Chilli a dressing down, which is hard as Chilli doesn’t wear any clothes (does a plant pot count?). Chilli said I was over-reacting and that lots of vegetables and flowers use Baby Bio.  I stuck to my guns and said chemical abuse would not be tolerated in this house. I found out later at Baby Bio is perfectly legal, more a vitamin than a drug.  I tried to apologise to Chilli but he gave me the old ‘leaf shoulder’.  I doubt Chilli and I will speak again today.

Training Begins
2007-05-01 14:35:11
Today is Chilli’s first day in training, so we headed over to the local supermarket to get some training accessories.  Chilli said he’d prefer to start his training with some general stretching and flexibility work, so we brought a yoga block and some resistance bands.       As you can see, Chilli got stuck right into his training regime.  He’s a small kid but boy has he got some heart (brings a tear to the eye).

Day Two - Chilli is very quiet
2007-04-30 18:19:24
Chilli has been with us for two days now and although he seems to be settling in he’s been very quiet today. I thought at first he’d been on the beer again last night (he comes from a drinking culture) but he said he was dry. He perked up in the afternoon and made a couple of jokes about cacti (I don’t think the two families get on very well), but I had to warn him that we didn’t approve of predjudice talk in this house. It was a prickly subject from then on, adoption is harder than you think.

Chilli gets a new home
2007-04-30 16:55:13
Long ago (well last Saturday), in a place far, far away (ok - West Sussex) a chilli pepper plant was lonely and sad. You see, this chilli was not like other chilli plants, he had a dream. A dream to be more than just a plant, but a valuable member of the chilli society - but life (or lack of sun light) was holding him back. Then, a magical thing happened. Three people entered the room (bar) where ‘Chilli ‘ lived and took pity on his sad, fruitless sole. They were kind, friendly people (they wobbled a bit but chilli figured it was a human thing), and made a pact to help Chilli fulfil his dream. Before Chilli could say ‘could you water me please’ the three had paid the mighty sum of 15 pounds and entered Chilli into the Chichester Chilli Pepper Challenge. Chilli was on his way to a new home and a new life - this blog is his story.

Who let the dogs out, who, who, who
2007-05-05 23:03:37
Chilli kicked up a right fuss this morning.  Liz and I were heading out for a bit of exercise on the bikes and Chilli was annoyed that he couldn’t come along.  I tried my best to explain the dynamics of why it wasn’t possible (no legs and all) but he just kept going on about it being ‘one rule for us, and one rule for plants’. To be honest I think he’s still brooding over the whole vegetable curry incident (he caught Liz making a curry and branded us both barbarians).  In the end we came to a compromise, Chilli got to spend the morning out in the garden sunbathing (he calls it training!) and we headed out on the bikes. When we got back the neighbour’s dog was annoying Chilli so we took him indoors.  Chilli got on his soapbox ranting about how dogs shouldn’t be allowed out without a lead and that certain chemicals were harmful to plants.  I honestly didn’t have a clue what he was on about – too much sun I expect. There’s been a very strange smell in the house al

Chilli’s Grandad
2007-05-10 19:49:39
A bit of investigating has turned up some history on Chilli ’s grandad or, more correctly, great great great great great (…I need enough “greats” for about 7,000 years.) It turns out that 7,000 years ago this very Tuesday (you see, I needed all those greats!) there occurred in South America an historic event. It was nothing less than the first eating of a chilli. It is understood, though accounts are hazey, that a group of Pre-Columbian Native Americans, after a hard day erecting a temple to the Sun God, fancied a bite to eat. Unfortunately, at that time, there was no local curry house, or chippie, or even an Esso garage where you could get a Kit Kat. All there was, in fact, was the jungle.  Now, the jungle can be a junlge at the best of times, but when you are looking for a curry, or a large single of chips, or a Kit Kat, it is doubly so. All that jungle and not a bite to eat. The pre-Columbian Native Americans got mightily cheesed off. But they were stil

Chilli’s off to Newcastle
2007-05-09 19:47:05
It just goes to show you can never second-guess a chilli plant. To give Chilli a break from his hard training regime (which as far as I can tell involves laying in the sun, which Chilli insists is hard work), we said he could pick a place for a short weekend break. We gave him a long list of possible places that we thought he’d enjoy and would be at home in, ranging from the New Forest to the Amazon. But, very much to our surprise, Chilli has picked Newcastle ! Chilli explained that it was a close thing between Newcastle and Manchester (I had to double-take on this one) but in the end Newcastle won because Chilli wanted to see the Angel of the North. He went on to explain he’d always wanted to see an angel and the nearest he’d ever come was seeing a rusty old metal angel on the top of his friend Chris     (-mas tree) one year. I hope he’s not disappointed.

No one ever expects…

Further investigations into Chilli’s forebears have revealed another interesting bit of history but a disturbing ancestor. There is a famous scence depicted in the long-lost etching by Goya. A young peasant man is seen crying tears of remorse before the outstretched accusing finger of the Grand Inquisitor. The peasant had repented before the glory of the church. It is now clear, however, that there was more to that outstretched finger than meets the eye. For at the end of that finger was the infamous Chile del Fuego de la Verdad (the Chili of the Fire of Truth.) It seems that the Grand Inquisitor had rubbed his finger in the torn flesh of a fresh chilli and poked the heritic in the eyes. He gave him chili eyes. That’s why he was crying. And that’s why he repented. It was this chilli that single-handedly, or more correctly single-fingeredly, cleansed the whole of Seville of heretics in the year 1502. With that chili finger the Grand Inquisitor of the Inquis

PMI – Chilli bounces back!
2007-05-19 14:06:45
Salvation – all is not lost and Chilli , that resilient little plant, is back in training. You see, after our worrying trip with Farmer Giles, it looked like nothing would pull Chilli out of this slump – but then we had a cunning plan.  Everyone knows that when a student gets disheartened they head for the pub.  It’s a well-proven fact that a pint of beer can cure wrinkles, dissolve worries and promote intelligent thinking (ok – not so sure on that last one).  With nothing to loose, we took Chilli on a pub-crawl. I know what your thinking, surely Chilli is in training, but desperate times calls for desperate measures (or at least large measures at the bar).  And what a success!  On our third pub, we ran into three other chilli plants and given Chilli’s state of intoxication we were a little worried things might get nasty.  But as it turns out, Chilli learnt a special secret. You see, the other chilli plants, which looked tall and well grown, were in the pub drowning thei

Runt of the litter?
2007-05-18 13:48:28
Chilli has the hump.  It’s been a worrying week for Chilli, who met up with some of his siblings for the first time since his adoption.  And something was very obvious; Chilli has some growing to do! I’ll let Farmer Giles, one of Chilli’s friends explain (read in a country accent): “You see what ‘append was, I took this ‘ere chilli pepper plant to the pub, where doz other chilli plants from the greenhouse woz.  Unfortunately all of those other plants had been in the greenhouse and got lots of what we call ‘sun shine’ while diz here chilli had been living in a kitchen. Chilli was quite a bit smaller than doz other plants ya see” And there we have it, Chilli, in a gump has decided he is the runt of the litter, doomed to failure and he’s lost all enthusiasm for the big challenge. I fear we may have a problem on our hands.

Pepsi Explosion
2007-06-09 18:06:23
Unbelievable, Chilli finishes his hard workout and goes to the fridge freezer to get a drink, only to find some joker has left a can of Pepsi in there - overnight.  It’s only gone and exploded, covering everything.  Poor Chilli never got his cool refreshing drink, must ask Lee if he knows anything about this?

Keep up the fluids
2007-06-09 18:04:04
Chilli’s been working so hard I think he’s going to burn out.  To help him cool down after his workout I popped a Diet Pepsi in the freezer for him.  It’ll be nice and chilled when he get it - got to look after the kid. P.S. Hope Pepsi is good for Chilli pepper plants!

Chilli Does Hamburg
2007-06-16 01:45:13
It’s party time for Chilli , he’s been training so hard we’ve given him a break and sent him off on a party weekend to Hamburg .  He’s staying in some place called the reaper-barn, or something.  Being a barn it’s prbably somehting to do with plants.  He says it’s hot there, so being a chilli he should fit right in.

Stranger Than ‘Chilli’ Fiction
2007-07-28 15:16:19
Got home tonight to find Chilli slumped on the couch watching a pile of DVDs.  This didn’t seem much like the training plan Chilli had lined up for the day.  The DVD that was playing was a Will Ferrell movie called Stranger Than Fiction , which Chilli said he could really relate to (he’s a little self involved, is our Chilli).  He then got on his soapbox and started making all kinds of claims that nothing he did “was ever private” and that he’d had “enough of everyone commenting” on his life.  I really don’t know where he gets these ideas from - honestly - talk about a dramatist!  He’d annoyed me so much I just had to blog it.

Chilli’s in a slump
2007-07-28 14:59:17
Not sure if it’s the weather or something else, but Chilli has not been himself since coming back from Hamburg.  We had our suspicions that Chilli was not exactly sticking to the ‘clean living’ plan in Hamburg when we found the following hidden under his pot: Really didn’t know how to discuss this with Chilli, but I think I might have to if he doesn’t pick up the training soon.  He’s looking out-of-sorts to me.

Chilli Wants Jose Mourinho
2007-09-22 03:40:03
This was a suprise, Chilli stormed in this morning and made it clear that his number one objective was to bring Jose Mourinho to Chilli Pepper FC.  Chilli was pretty certain Jose’s recent comments were a hint that his offer of two (not one, two!!) spicy meals a week and a can of diet coke were being considered by Mourinho. Of course there is the legal issues to get sorted with Roman Abramovich, but Chilli said people shouldn’t under estimate the Russian love of hot food!
