Contact Me
2007-07-25 04:20:00
Somewhere along the track I lost my contact button and did not realize it. (If anyone has seen it please send it back to me). I fiddle with this template so much that it was probably overwritten in error. My side-bar now sports a new shiny contact button, based loosely on Stu Nichol's CSS Play Rocker Switch Menu. Now anyone wishing to contact me may do so by clicking on the button which will take you to a form on the Contactify site. I decided to use Contactify so that my email address would be hidden from those pesky spammers. (I could use much stronger terms to describe them!). It is also a handy way of including a method of contact in a post as follows:Contact meIf you use another email utility which you think is better than Contactify in any way please let me know.I always welcome your input so if know of anything you think would be useful to feature on this site, please let me know. I always thank my contributors by way of a mention and link. Such links are a good way for other blo

Pownce Invites
2007-07-23 15:23:00
I have three Pownce invites to give away to the first three people who contact me by leaving a comment on this post.Pownce membership is by invitation only right now, during its testing period, but I have yet to come across any gliches or problems with it.What is Pownce?Imagine a combination of Twitter/Jaiku with a desktop* based messaging/link/file/event/photo sharing system and you will get a general picture.Yet another social networking tool maybe. but the extra features do make it useful. Messages can be sent to individual contacts, your whole list of contacts, a group of contacts or all the pownce members. Grouping allows you to seperate your list into categories, for example, family members, friends, work colleagues, blogging contacts. The contacts you can add are existing friends and contacts plus their friends/contacts. It has a pyramid rather than the flat sort of structure that allows you to browse members and add anyone. For now at least -I do not know what plans there ar

HTML beginners - copying source code.
2007-07-28 13:39:00
HTMLAlthough blog software does makes it possible to produce your pages without knowing any web coding, there are times when you do need to enter html. If nothing else you are likely to need to enter web links in your posts or sidebar from time to time. If you don't know any html do not despair! There are ways round it.Any browser will allow you to view the page source,, but finding the particular code may not be easy but, as I like 'easy', here are better options if you want to just find out code for part of a web page.If you just want to create a link or clickable image you can use an online tool such as Quick Link Maker.Firefox offers an inbuilt solution, which will show you the source code for any text you wish to know the html code for; including links:Highlight any text on a page, right click and choose 'View Selection Source' from the drop down menu. A window will appear showing a snippet of html code, with the the area you selected highlighted. It is usually just a matter

Blog Toolbox - MS OneNote
2007-07-27 19:11:00
Being an avid blog researcher, who takes copious notes, as well being self-employed with lots of different projects on the go, I need to be organised.Having tried various methods for note taking that were lacking in some way, I am now a firm fan of Microsoft OneNote. This program is built into Microsoft Office (at least since the 2003 version). It sat there for 3 years unnoticed and unloved until my son put me on to it a year ago.I originally used it for my blogging research notes but, having got to know the program better, I now keep all sorts of details and information in there. I have separate OneNote folders for each of my blogs, websites and clients and a personal one for miscellaneous notes and reminders. The beauty of it is that I can keep all my notes within the one program and changes are automatically saved. I don't have to worry about losing information. The methods for organizing and categorizing your notes are plentiful, making it very easy to

SSS 9 - Mainly Soccer
2007-07-29 13:17:00
SSSI am sure it must be still Sunday somewhere in the world. One of the reasons I am late with this is that I went to an 'Idea of North' concert last night. They are a very talented Australian A Cappella group. I really enjoy watching them perform live, it makes me appreciate evn more how they can create such wonderful sounds with no backing music. I am unable to embed their video clips but here are a couple of urls to their work:Isn't She Lovely music clip - The Idea of North This one is a special feature on their recent DVD "Live at the Powerhouse". See if you can guess what happens at the end of the clip!RachelThat does not really count as silly so back to being more jocular. I thought this post from Colin on his 'Life' site was really funny Proof (If Any Were Needed) That Footballers Are Thick. I read this on the heels of an email my brother sent me. I am not sure where he found the quotes. If anyone knows if they are online, please let me know and I will link to them.Quotes ma

Stirredup - but no shakedown
2007-08-02 15:49:00
I recently came across Stirredup, a site whose aim is to promote content that "generates spirited conversation".Submitted articles are awarded points based on how much response they get. Points are gained mainly through clicks through to an article and the number of comments it generates. (Considering that very few comments are made the clicks must be all important). It is not possible to favor a post without having read it at its source blog or website, the idea being that it must generate real interest to achieve importance.Whether you agree or disagree with the content of the article is not important it is the actions you take with regard to it that count. Hopefully this will avoid the link exchange 'shakedown' - "I will only favor you if you favor me" kind of thing. You are encouraged to submit your own posts to the site. New posts are shown in the 'Stirring' section. If enough points are awarded, articles are then promoted to the Hot News pages which start on the Stirredup ho

Blogged Out or Stressed Out?
2007-08-03 13:13:00
Blogging is meant to be fun, right? Most of the time it is but, are you ever:Overwhelmed by the amount of work your blog itself creates.Feel stressed trying to keep up with all the social networking you feel that you have to do?Worried that your posts are good enough, your site is designed well enough, you are running out of ideas ....Concerned you are missing out on some new trend. If you are keen to increase readership and gain recognition in the blogging world, as most of us are to some extent, there are many things we are advised to do. When you are not blogging your mind may be filled with thoughts of having to blog daily, answer comments, comment on other blogs .... and then you have to spend the time actually doing it.With the advent of all the new social networking tools it is sometimes hard to keep up. It was simpler (although probably less effective) when the main things you had to do to get your blog noticed was to submit to blog directories and search engines, make sure

Blogging Stress - Less networking, Better Networking
2007-08-07 12:15:00
Following my article Blogged Out, Stressed Out I have been concentrating on researching the issue of Social Networking with a view to cutting back on some of the groups I am a member of. My aim is to make my social networking activities more productive as well as less time consuming. To gain the full benefit from Social Networking sites you need to be an active participant. In general adding contacts, commenting on their blogs, favoring those you like and messaging are necessary to make your membership worthwhile. If you join multiple such sites, time constraints mean that you have to spread yourself too thinly and you cannot give each of them the attention required. Many times I find the same people are joining the same sites that I am a member of. One face may appear four times in my sidebar widgets (MyBlogLog, Bumpzee, SpicyPage, Blog Catalog). It is a good reminder for me to catch up with some of the people behind the images, but then I have to decide which is the best site to visi

Fechr Feature
2007-08-09 01:00:00
There is some mutual back-scratching happening over at Fechr . Write a post about the Fechr site, saying what you think about it, and you may be chosen as the featured blog of the day. The site plans charging for the priviledge in the future, with this free offer only then available on a Friday. Charges in the future will start out at a "modest $5 to $10" but they do not say what the immodest price will be.Fetchr is pronounced 'feature' but I am not sure I would remember to call it that. photo from PetHINTSI decided to have a look round to see if there was anything being said about the site other than what Fechr suggests is said. It does seem that if you are featured your site will benefit from a fair few hits:A comment on One of a Kind Wisconsin LLC, by Michelle Gartner who says she got over 200 unique hits from being featured on FechrLisa of Lisa Reviews says she "ended up with 592 hits from Fechr"Adracker recommends "alerting your hosting company for the extra traffic" after Fec

Blogging Stress - Less posting, better posting
2007-08-13 23:38:00
It is recommended that bloggers post regularly and frequently to develop and maintain their readership. This can create a lot of pressure on blog authors, especially if the time available for blogging is limited, you have a lot of research to do or you simply do not have the quantity of ideas or material to do so.In these sort of situations frequent regular posting can be counter productive:The quality of your riting may not be up to your best standard. (Not to mention the attention to detail - e.g. spelling!) It may be obvious that not enough research has been carried out.You do not allow enough time for ideas to form fully and your content reflects this. (er - now what was I going to say next) You are forced to neglect other aspects of blogging. (commenting, replying to your comments etc). I tend to be an offender here - sorry. You can start to lose interest because you are not enjoying blogging and you are less than satisfied with not satisfied with your content. Readership actually

SSS 11 - Laughter is the best medicine
2007-08-12 16:11:00
Found on FlickrFrom Stamp and Shout If you don't find these at all funny you could always try to laugh.. Laughter, even for no reason at all, is meant to have healing powers over mind and body.Weekly laughter classes are held at a community hall not far from where I live. I thought I would check online to see if laughter therapy was becoming popular. It certainly looks that way.2007 Laughter Yoga Cruise (It is beyond my comprehension how anyone can find contortingthemselves into unnatural positions any way amusing. *Yoga classes did help me though. I was suffering badly from nerves and had a long term problem with finger nail biting. I no longer need to wear gloves to hide my embarrassment. No one seems to notice that I don't wear open toe shoes any more.* I think Laughter Mystery Flights would be more fun than a cruise (although I am not sure if they would take off).If this does not appeal to you, how about making others laugh, you may find it catching.Steven M. SSS 11 - How Blogging mirrors real life
2007-08-19 12:01:00
I have spent a lot of time this week pondering the direction in which I want my blog to go but I will talk of this some other day. As it is "Sueblimely Silly Sunday" time again I will instead let you have a peek into the less serious side of these thoughts. If I don't keep my mind focused it tends to wander off in all sorts of wild and wonderful and absolutely silly directions. Do I hear you saying 'keep taking the tablets dear"? The main focus of my more deep and meaningful thoughts was the social psychological aspects of blogging and the need it fills in today's society. I will bore you with all this in the near future, when I have had time to do more research - to make sure I am not talking a lot of bull. It is over 20 years since I formally studied the Social Sciences and although my interest in the subject has not waned I tend to get my Durkheims and Mazlo's confused. Weber has become just a type of BBQ and Wertheimer a vacuum cleaner. (I did not think a little name dropping w

Google Sky - Reach for the Stars
2007-08-24 19:09:00
This is totally off topic but I had to share the cause of my excitement. As I came home last night from a delightful evening out, dining with my two sons at a cheap and cheerful local Greek restaurant, my mood was high and the sky was dark and clear. I wished, once more, that I knew more about the stars and constellations in the southern sky above. Imagine how pleased I was to discover that Google Earth now incorporates 'Sky' which allows an astronaut's view of the earth. Not only can you view stars, constellations, galaxies, planets and the Earth's moons but you can zoom right down to street level. Street level earth that is - Google has yet to discover life on another planet. Imagine if they developed the Sky equivalent of 'Street View' - we would be able to try and spot the little green men ourselves? To access the new feature you must download the new version of Google Earth - Download To use the feature you 'Switch to Sky' from the View menu in Google Earth. Once this is

Apologies to Google
2007-08-22 22:12:00
I just made a blogging boo boo and want to say sorry to Google Adsense. Google must take part of the blame though.I just committed the sin of clicking one one of my own Google Ads - because it caught my interest. I wrote a post on laughter therapy a couple of weeks ago and clever Google Adsense Bot (I am just assuming there must be one) "read" this post and delivered an ad for a laughter therapy session taking place in my home town of Melbourne. Very clever really.I included the image because it made me smile and I thought it may do the same for you.I think I may do an experiment and include some words I would not normally use, to see if they get picked up on by Adsense. It is not that I think I will make any money out of adsense but I am now curious as to how responsive it is to my content.Google - you can have my $0.00000000000001 adsense payment back if you want it. In the future if I see anything of interest on there I will just copy the link and go to it from the browser rather

Last week I mentioned the blogLOUDER - Blog Consulting Competition being run by Adnan on Blogtrepreneur. I was fortunate enough to win this competition. For my prize I had the choice of a Blog Consultations using an Instant Messenger Service or Blog Review in the form of an emailed report. I had first thought I would opt for the review so that I got an objective analysis of my blog without me influencing it in any way. After having a chat with Adnan, however, I decided that the objectivity would still be present in a consultation, it allowed me to ask questions and as I was not completely new to blogging we would not cover areas I already knew. I was pleased with the results of the consultation. Adnan really does knows a lot about blogging. He speaks from personal experience and was able to fill in some gaps for me, especially with regard to SEO, blog promotion, increasing readership and RSS subscriptions. The consultation was tailored well to the requirements of this blog. Although
