I got tagged - do I take up the challenge?
2007-05-17 22:23:00
In case you don't know what I mean by being tagged:I am not referring to: Being microchipped like a pet dog.Being bookmarked on del.icio.usWhat I do mean is that I have been challenged to take part in a couple of 'group writing projects'/ blog memes. The wikipedia definition of a meme is a "unit of cultural information" which can propagate from one mind to another in a manner analogous to genes". My definition in relation to blogging -"something you inherit from a blogger you know and pass on to other bloggers - the genetic reference much kinder than referring to it as something you catch like a bad cold. You have probably seen lots of memes around; they are particularly popular among teenagers on such blogging platforms as MySpace and Live Journal. I am well past teenage years (in age that is - some would dispute it in terms of maturity - eg those non blogging fans in my family who wonder why I do it!). Take a look at Instigator Blog and The Daily Meme sites for many examplesS

Linebuzz Founder Mark Maunder Comments
2007-05-15 23:00:00
The first two comments I received using LineBuzz came from me (It's a worry - I talk to myself using the chat feature on this page too!) . The third comment came straight from the horse's mouth - from Mark Maunder, the founder of Linkbuzz. As I thought his comment valuable for bloggers trying to increase traffic to their site, I have reproduced his comment here. Hope thats OK Mark.Hi Sue, Great blog, and I see you're one of the first to use our customization features since we launched yesterday.I thought I'd comment on methods to increase traffic via SEO.I used to run a job search engine which was one of Time Mag's top 50 websites of '05. We provided a search, but simultaneously got a lot of traffic from the non-vertical search engines like Google. Bloggers generate a lot of new content daily which search engines love and that's one of the keys to promoting any website to the SE's. And you've mentioned that in your article. But another key is letting the search engines know abou

Linebuzz - a novel approach to commenting
2007-05-15 22:22:00
When I discovered LineBuzz , I was immediately compelled to try it out. I think this novel application, which went into beta yesterday, has the potential to be a real winner within the blogsphere.LineBuzz will let your blog readers add comments inline. How it works.Readers of your blog can highlight any post text and hit on a "Comment Inline" button (which would usually be best placed in a sidebar). This pops up a window where they can add a comment. The comments are then displayed in a box under the "Comment Inline" button. Text that has been selected for commenting is underlined when your page next reloads. Clicking the underlined text text triggers a pop-up showing the the comments made. Apart from the usefulness of having your comments displayed in this way, readers can comment about a particular part of your post.Installation is simple. LineBuzz creates the script for you. All you need to do is type in your blog url and then insert the script where you want the comments to appear

Social Bookmarks Manager
2007-05-20 07:49:00
Social Bookmarks Manager is a small freely downloadable program which creates bookmarklets for your site. You can create either text only, icon only or text and icon links. The program comes with 59 profiles of the most popular social bookmarking sites and generates ready-to-use HTML code for you to paste into your site.It is a good idea to tag and bookmark your own posts too. Rather than adding numerous tags to my post and having too many categories, I bookmark my posts so that I can find them easily by adding more specific tags. Online public bookmarking is also one of the ways to increase traffic to your site so ensure if you have the option that your blog bookmarks are not private. Here is an example using 10 out of the 59 online bookmarking services supported by the application.Add to: Tags: Tagging, Bookmarking, Blog-Tools sueblimely

Increase your Blog Readership Part 2 - Presentation
2007-05-18 12:32:00
Having worked out your individual needs for your blog, think about your content presentationWrite content that will be of interest to the audience you are trying to reach. It is unlikely that all of your posts will be of interest to all of your readers of course, but aim to captivate as many as you can. What sort of content is of most interest may take some time to work out, although research will help you get started. Visit popular blogs about a similar topic. Find them by doing search engine searches, Google blog searches, visiting popular bookmarking services such as del.icio.us, Stumbleupon, technorati. Deduce from this what you think are popular topics, or sub topics of your particular subject area. Even if your content is quite unique, visiting successful blogs can provide you with useful information.. Once your blog gains readership, popularity of posts is easier to determine. You have such tools as backlinks, comments, bookmarked posts and email subscriptions and site statisti

If You Remember No Other Traffic Tip, Remember This One
2007-05-21 13:27:00
I would recommend this post to those of you who are starting out blogging and are concerned about increasing traffic. John, of "Finding The Money" fame, has again come up with a well written article that pulls no punches and makes perfect sense. The article spurred me on and I hope you find it encouraging too. I am not going to give away his tip as you need to read it in context. (I also don't think it good betiquette to take advantage of someone else's idea in posts but I will certainly put his advice to good use.)If You Remember No Other Traffic Tip, Remember This OneTags: Traffic, Blog-Tips, sueblimely

Blogging Toolbox 1-Firefox/Flock
2007-05-24 15:24:00
Firefox - is my browser of choice, with Flock a close second. Both allow easy addition of useful extensions and toolbars for blogging.Extensions:ScrapbookUses - blog editing and researchScrapbook allows you to download pages, complete with images, quickly and simply and then edit them using any html editor/text. I find this extension indispensable and especially useful to view and style xml and java script generated content; which you can't normally view until you have saved your template or posted your blog.Major Features:Save a web pageSave a snippet of a web page by selecting text and images Save a web site (In-depth Capture)Erase parts of the page prior to capture if there are areas you do not want. (e.g. you may just wish to do some styling of your sidebar) Organize the collection in the same way as BookmarksIt is great for the New Blogger. Alister Cameron in the eye of the storm
2007-06-02 05:29:00
Alister Cameron Blogologist, in fine form, has written an article about the trials and tribulations of keeping up with all the tasks that bloggers are advised to perform to stay on top of the game.I was nodding my head in agreement over the time it takes to carry out the sort of tasks he mentions -reading, researching, subscribing, commenting.digging, bumping, favoriting, faming, fuelling, stumbling, submitting, tagging, dobbing* , befriending. If I have missed out a particular term used by a social networking site, please let me know.Alister puts it beautifully when he says "everyone knows your success on ... social voting/bookmarking sites is directly proportional to the number of friends (i.e. people you’ve never met)" The following don't take me much time unfortunately as Alister has not met a lot more people than I have not met.commenting, thanking for comments, commenting on comments, researching the best way to comment, thank for comments and comment on comments…..My head

Missing Madeleine McCann
2007-06-01 00:26:00
I have a fervent wish that the power of the internet can be fully utilized to create good in this world. Its ability to draw people together for a common goal is already happening in a multitude of ways. The blogging community is a prime example with its interactivity, social networking, commenting and web rings,. The resulting RSS feeds create constantly updated web content.Sites which include blogging features are developing to support charities and create mutual support (eg Care2, an online community for people who 'want to make a difference'and Careplace, a mutual support community.Bloggers have the power to get their message through quickly and widely and I believe we should use this ability much more for the common good. For this reason, I am posting the following message about the British 4 yr old , Madeleine McCann , who was abducted in Portugal on May 3rd:Tags: Link-Love sueblimely alexa

Social Bookmarking as a Traffic Source - Part 2: StumbleUpon

My mate Hans over at bloggst has been successfully developing his site. It is good to witness hard work bearing fruit. (I use the term 'mate' because I have become a true blue Aussie over the years - one with a Yorkshire accent to boot)Bloggst is an online community and resource center created exclusively for bloggers where members can share tips, help and experiences. (you do not have to be a member to gain access to reading a lot of the site but there are advantages in joining)Bloggst offers articles and posts written by Hans, forums and a marketplace. Members are rewarded for their participation on the site. The blogs of regular contributors are added to the site's blogroll. There is an add a friend feature allowing you to track blogs of interest. One of the topics Hans is developing is 'Social Bookmarking as a Traffic Source ', where he is reviewing individual social bookmarking services. Quick Tip - Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar
2007-06-02 17:38:00
As I circumnavigate the blogosphere, searching for new blog tools and tips to report on in this blog, I end up visiting many many sites. Keeping on task has never been one of my strong points so I get sidetracked by sites (usually blogs these days) that talk of all sorts of weird and wonderful things.I also join social networking sites, make contacts, comment etc (see prior post!).All in all I have a huge amount of sites that I need to keep track on. As a quick and easy way of recording and organizing them I have created a folder, with subfolders, on my Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar . It is then simply a matter of me dragging a site's favicon icon on to the toolbar and into the appropriate folder.I am then able to find sites again easily although the rest of my family do not like using my PC because they cannot find anything easily.Come to think of it that is another good reason to have full toolbars and start menu folders with subfolders and subfolders ... They do not linger on my mac

Stu Nicholls - CSSPlay
2007-06-08 01:35:00
I am a devotee of CSS styling and always CSS instead of tables, unless it is just not practical to do so. I think table coding is fine for tables - the more complicated ones at that. When I was learning web building I followed Stu Nicholls CSSPlay examples regularly, particularly for his menus and boxes. His menu examples are accompanied by clear tutorials and copy and paste coding. If you wish to create a menu but are not confident about coding and styling it yourself Stu has now provided an automatic Menu Builder to creates horizontal and vertical menus which can include pop outs and drop downs. Here is an example of one of his clever boxes - no images are used for this: Hover over the box for a surprise.Jack in the BoxBOO!Tags: CSS, Design, sueblimely alexa

Jyte - make claims to increase traffic to your blog
2007-06-07 09:16:00
As with all social networking sites the more you put in, the more you benefit. Merely joining them is not enough to increase your blog traffic . Jyte allows 'claiming' on any topic under the sun but also caters for claiming URLs and selected text from a site. By making popular statements about any subject, and submitting post titles and selected phrases, you are increasing your exposure and that of your blog. Claim regularly to increase your chances of success.Study what sort of claims are voted for the most and how they are phrased.Repeat a popular topic with a different slant.Find out what keywords are popular.Be clever with your statementsBe humorous.Add favorite 'claimers' and give credit to others. That’s the theory I am going to follow. Tags: Traffic, Social-Networking, sueblimely alexa

What is Jyte?
2007-06-07 04:22:00
I have been exploring and participating on Jyte today and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I recommend you take a look. It has potential for use as a source of traffic to your blog - more on that in the followin post.Jyte is an acronym for "just you tell 'em";a community based website. The idea is that you make "claims" (a declarative statement) on any topic you wish, have those statements voted on and vote on the claims of others. The 'claim' takes the form of a headline, an optional description and tagging. You have the option to discuss/comment on any claims.Features:Make public claims for others to vote on. Vote on claims you agree or disagree with.Add favorite members.Join groupsCredit (favorite) other members and be credited yourselfYour own account page where you build a profile, track your claims, claims you have voted on and 'creds' you have given and received.Search claims by Timeline, Most Votes, Discussed, Solid, Contested and Recently Commented.Use your openID as you
