Deeply Dormant 2007-04-30 19:33:58 Two of my bonsai this year have still not come out of dormancy yet and sprouted leaves. One is a collected yamadori Hawthorn which needed a severe root cut which I don’t think it liked very much. The other is an oak I bought last year from a guy on ebay. (more…) Read more:Deeply

New website address 2007-04-28 10:23:25 Well I got round to purchasing a website
called bonsaiart.co.uk
There’s no change to this site for the moment but I aim to move to that site by May 7th. Fairly ambitious I know but I will be working on it every day from now until then and I think it can be done. There will still be daily blogs from this site until that date.
Thanks for your support!

Domain consideration 2007-04-24 18:38:15 This blog has really taken off! It’s only been online 7 days and already had nearly 170 hits in total and 15-20 rss feed viewers per day. I am thinking of purchasing a domain name as I feel i’m outgrowing this host already. Onwards and upwards as they say! Once I get more space I’ll be able even more to the site such as a picture gallery, a forum and maybe even videos also.
Watch this space.
Best bonsai tree choice 2007-04-24 10:36:30 What are the best trees for bonsai? This is a difficult question as I feel that any tree or shrub can be used for bonsai. However there are some that are harder to use than others for various reasons. (more…)
Gigantic multi-trunk tree 2007-05-03 11:48:02 This morning I spotted a fantastic tree which goes to show you can have a great looking tree with many trunks. I think it is a cypress, that’s my guess anyway. See below. (more…)
The time for yamadori is over 2007-05-02 17:54:41 It is definately the wrong time to collect trees from the wilds at the moment. I actually commited the immortal sin a few days ago of collecting in the height of spring. (more…)
How trees grow - Part 2 (dormancy in deciduous trees) 2007-05-06 07:30:34 Dormancy in deciduous trees is something everyone knows about and sees in the winter. These trees lose their leaves during the winter and cease all growth until the weather improves in spring. (more…)

How trees grow - Part 3 (Dormancy in evergreen trees) 2007-05-07 07:30:51 Dormancy in evergreen
s is something that you do not hear about so often as in deciduous. It does occur however but they do not lose their leaves/needles. The tree itself actually stops growing. (more…)
How trees grow - Part 7 (Branches & Trunk) 2007-05-11 07:30:54 Suprisingly height growth in a tree does not occur from the ground. If you made a mark on the trunk of a tree it would remain in the same place for the life of the tree. The branches extend from the buds and exisiting branches only expand in diameter, they do not lengthen. The trunk expands in diameter each growing season outwards. (more…) Read more:Trunk
How trees grow - Part 6 (Buds & Leaves) 2007-05-10 07:30:32 Buds are the primary source of new growth for a tree. They are one of the only parts of the tree which contains meristems. Meristems are areas of intense cell activity. This enables it to focus all its growing efforts into the new leaves which appear from the buds. (more…)
How trees grow - Part 5 (Roots) 2007-05-09 07:30:14 Roots are the first thing to start growing in springtime. New fiborous roots start sprouting utilising the same meristems as buds. (more…)

What’s the point of Grafting? 2007-05-13 07:30:38 For a long time I wondered what the reason for grafting was. A sloppy graft seemed to be so disfiguring and point
less.
However a graft is used to gain the desired qualities of a specimen tree. If the specimen tree is very straight, has many leaves or is a beautiful colour a graft can be taken to replicate the tree’s qualities. A branch is cut off the specimen tree and attached to the roots of an average tree of the same species. (more…)

How to get your bonsai to leaf by making them sweat! 2007-05-15 07:45:28 Two of my trees this year have not grown leaves after winter and have been in a dormant state now for way too long. After a bit of research I found that one method you can break dormancy is to “sweat” the tree. I found this at the University of Kentucky’s website. The good news is that they do mention oaks and hawthorns which are the two bonsai of mine that are affected. (more…) Read more:making
Site Additions 2007-05-19 20:07:30 I’ve added a few interesting things to the site. The most impressive one is a page accessible from the top bar called “Have Your Say“ With this addition you can post your own message to the main page! You create a post and it gets sent to me for moderation. Once checked over it will appear on the main page.
Give it a try…
Also I’ve added a link to “The Tree“. A good website I found with tons of information about trees. It can be found on the right hand side underneath Blogroll

Fantastic bonsai trees for sale on ebay 2007-05-18 07:30:36 I often check out ebay for new bonsai. I like to see what’s on offer to buy but also for inspiration for my own trees. If you have a bit of cash I recommend you check them out this week. I have a link on my page to the right hand side ———> (more…) Read more:Fantastic
Collecting Trees From the Wilds - Part 2 2007-05-23 00:30:12 I checked my collected ash tree last night and found 3 small new leaves already! A very good sign indeed. In fact I have never had a yamadori tree which has just been collected to sprout new leaves so quickly, it usually takes quite a while to recover. Maybe it’s to do with the fact that it spent probably only 15 minutes out of the soil and the roots were throughly wrapped up. Having said that I did have to cut off quite a lot of large roots to extract it from the earth. I was expecting to wait at least a couple of weeks for new growth (more…) Read more:Collecting

Redwoods Like to Think Big 2007-05-22 11:43:00 The redwood is the tallest tree on earth. Fact.
How do they grow to this enormous size? They think big! It sounds silly but everything about their structure is set up to be huge. I have a 1 year old tree (see below). The strange thing about it is that its tiny. You would expect a tree like a redwood to shoot up very quickly to gain great height. This is not the the case. This tree is slowly setting itself up to reach for the stars. (more…)
