Why I can come off as an extrovert...
2008-03-14 11:00:49
I worked for a tech startup in '99 as a dev. Our company's dev attended a technical developer's conference. At the conference was a trade floor. The dev's were told that they needed to put in shifts during the conference at the booth with the marketing and sales guys. This is pretty much standard practice. What was not standard practice, was that this company's sales and marketing force were pretty much a row of impotent has beens. As the adage goes, they couldn't sell a bottle of water to a dying man in the desert. When I took my shift I watched as the two suits at the booth stood there like they were waiting for the delivery of the next roll of toilet paper. After 10 minutes of this I decided to "switch on". As people passed by I engaged them. You've seen this in action done very poorly at

Pi Day!
2008-03-14 09:54:28
3/14Of course one could hazard that we still have 7 years to go until... 3/14/15Then there are others who might say that 3/14/16 is a more correctly rounded day. What I really want to know is the one geek in Shakespearian time who was into this."Good my Lord, Forsooth, is not the date and time Marche the 14th in this the year of our Lord 1592?"Roderick you oaf, why must thou quest me thus at 6:53...nay now 6:54 in the morn?" And Roderick found himself having crap thrown at him and shortly thereafter dying of the black plague.Next useless time and date on December 24th and 9pm (Eastern standard time)

Wait? Social Life :?) What a week!
2008-03-16 16:12:22
Finally, a sane and vaguely healthy week.I missed Monday while the last of the weekend rang itself thru my system.Tuesday I had lunch with the lovely 1_wolfsong. We had some of elocinnuala's leftover shepherd's pie that I'd brought in. Let me tell you. That woman can cook!. After work I was met by the amazing lazuli93 for dinner, chat and drinks. I took her to Redmond's Marinopolis Sushi Land. Quite fun. They didn't want to give us a booth, but we were there before the rush, so they acquiesced. Note: The Toreador in Redmond has an AMAZING selection of Tequilas. Granted, I don't drink tequila. But they did have Mango-Tequila Sorbet. And oh... yum. I just wish I had my stomach back to full strength at that point. Great conversation... I feel much better about stuff I'm working on after a cha

Something I never thought I could do...
2008-03-20 00:13:57
Edit This time in English.I have many dear friends that I love and respect. And pretty much from this post forward I realize that my relationship is going to turn blatantly into, "We will have to agree to disagree". Basically there are some friends who will disagree with me on what I am doing. One friend who actually might agree with me faces a different aspect of this amazing thing. This evening I wrote a letter to my oldest and dearest friend. Someone who I have been a member of a Rocky Horror cast with, someone I have been in the SCA with, someone I have had the strangest of relationships with. I've been thru chaos, and punk, and rasta, and pasta, and book clubs, and parenting discussions with her. Before I wrote this letter to her I would never have believed it possible.I asked her to con

"Not This Time"
2008-03-18 18:32:47
shimmeringjemmy posted earlier today. I'm going to follow up with a bit more rhetoric.I seriously ask friends and readers to take the time to read this and follow the link at the end.Like many people I have been very angry at the last 3 elections. My anger has not stemmed from what the Republicans are doing to the Democrats. My anger has stemmed from what the Democrats do about the Republicans.Personally, I had pretty much come to the conclusion that both parties want nothing more than to polarize the country to take the inevitable decision out of the populaces hand so that they could turn it into a contest to see which side could wield the better legalese interpretation. And then in my eyes... it got worse. The Democrats would counter with minority candidates. Now personally, I'm not pleas

Why I hate: Wear Green Today Events...
2008-03-22 00:12:48
Today... many people who use LiveJournal who felt strongly about policy and practices, decided to voice their discontent ironically by not voicing. That is to say, forming a 'strike' to walk out on their journals and neither post nor comment.Actions like this annoy the hell out of me. But I will not state how I feel about the situation. Now, I'm talking about the choice of action... or in this case inaction.I will explain. Many times I have seen, "Wear Denim today to protest mutilating kittens."My problem with this becomes two-fold.One.... What if all I ever wear is denim. Does this basically mean if I support mutilating kittens and don't have a wardrobe that doesn't have denim in it somewhere; I have to go buy new clothes? And B.. or two... What if I didn't get the memo? What if I show up

Well, we knew it was going to be ugly
2008-03-22 12:07:45
When I entered the Washington Caucus I did so firmly as an undecided member choosing to support the Democratic Party.I was so firm in my stance I was prepared (if necessary) to stand as an 'undecided delegate' in the conference. I acknowledge the amount of pressure from both sides of the democratic campaign that this would open me to.At my caucus location, people were unimaginably supportive. Yes there was a vocal majority of Obama supporters. The Clinton supporters (while numbering less) were no less vocal of their support.Yet, despite this there was NO pressure on me to pick a candidate. Everyone who was familiar with the caucus process were united in one stance. Showing those of us unfamiliar how the process worked. Everyone had a fair time to speak. I was even given time to speak on wh

Memetime: This is going around via email
2008-03-24 10:00:12
This email or things like it go around about once every 3-5 years. This one is entertaining because it talks about how easy things are today by comparing it to about 20-25 years ago. To be honest; things weren't that miserable 30 years ago either. They were different; but I'd still take the creature conveniences of 30 years ago over the lack of conveniences of say... 90 years ago.So... this is a fun walk down amnesia lane for the 30+ crowd. (I know some of you have already seen it via email and blog)SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!! This is a meme I came across in my history from about 3 years ago.1. Post a list of ten TV shows or fandoms you follow (current or cancelled).2. Have your friends list guess your favorite character from each show. (comments are screened)3. When guessed, bold the line and write a sentence about why you like the character.4. Post in your own LiveJournal. The list:1. Doctor Who chite: Sarah Jane. She was the best companion of the lot.2. Babylon 53. Firefly (two answers)4. M.A.S.H.chite: Hawkeye... It just was. There was no one else.5. Wonderfalls6. Red Dwarf bayareajenn: Lister. Cloister the Stupid in the land of Fushell :-D7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer8. Family Guy bayareajenn: Brian. Why do you like Doctor Who?Bless you to the person who wrote this.I was a kid in the 70's and Early 80's. Let's just start there. Cartoons really had gone to complete sh*t by the time we hit 1984. I knew that Warner Brothers cartoons were 'way old' and that the 70's hey day of Bullwinkle and Rocky and other such shows were being replaced by He-Man. And no matter how much we joke. He-Man really was a crap of a cartoon. So let's look at science fiction in the 70s and 80s. Star trek was history and all we had was the filmation Star Trek cartoons. A wonderful article posits: Between groundbreaking classics that were light years ahead of their time ("Star Trek," "The Twilight Zone," "The Prisoner"), envelope-pushers that were canceled far short of their creative peak ("Battlestar Galactica," "V"

Do you believe in angels? This is a really good question. I'll say right off the bat... chreubs with wings and halos.. or any human with wings and halos... Not so much. Now, I am a ceremonialist. LBRP at 20 paces and all. So I invoke the power of the archangels. And for visualization I go all the way. Michael: Big Guy.. flaming sword. But belief... That's a different question. The concept of Angels in ceremonial magick, kaballah, and some biblical studies is sort of the middle management between the divine and physical world of existence. You know I have enough problems trying to find my physical purpose and my attainment of a divine that transcends everything I might proscribe to it. Now... There is the concept of the Holy Guardian Angel, I kind of view that as the first step to divinity beyo

You have a long and varied list of how to contact you and regale us with stories of all the scammers who contact you, but it is difficult to get an actual response from you. Am I doing something wrong? It's a fair cop. Things have been a bit uneven of late. And in the old cliche words to all not just the asker, "It's not you it's me."Typically, I like to get a response out within 24 hours. Actually, I like to have one out within 2-4 hours. So what goes wrong? For starters... best way to question me is via IM with an emphasis on AIM. I am horrible at phone conversations. But let's focus on email. If you don't get a response from me within 24 hours there are a couple of possibilties.1) I didn't think the question necessitated a response. (Sometimes a vastly wrong assumption on my part)(the writ

Catching up... NorWesCon
2008-03-28 19:01:13
So... last weekend (Et al Croce: Seems like such a long time ago...) we went to NorWesCon.On the one hand, internally I was giddy like a little kid. shimmeringjemmy gave me several hours free time on my own at the con. This was exciting in theory.Unfortunately, my con experience wasn't like the ones I had as a 15 year old. NWC seems to be far more based in the social clumping. Seeing friends you don't get to see except at NWC. Hanging with friends at sessions. Going with friends to gatherings.I'm still new to the area so my social experience consists of    seeing about 10 people in the weekend that I kinda know...    Admiring their outfit if they are wearing it...    Asking how they are enjoying the con...    w

I have caught the con/festival crud. I don't have the miserable sick that I had in February... But it's a coughy, achy, sneezing goo.Now here's the problem. For the next 48 hours I need to be at the top of my game.I basically need to perform at my best.So I need to ask friends and such to send positive energy of success in my general direction for at least the next 48 hours. I can't exactly explain why at the moment. I probably will next week. But for now. It's just a sort of muster the will and go forwards kind of thing.I know I'm being vague... but rest assured.. If all works like I hope... I will explain in detail (with luck) within the week. Thanks for this unpaid service announcement.P.S. if you know what I'm dealing with, please don't share until I post.

Only in my geeky world...
2008-03-30 18:19:07
I've added a new internal hard-drive to my workstation at home. The old drive was getting pretty full and I'm pretty sure I need to blank it and run diagnostics on it.The old drive has two partitions: Babalon and Beast. Babalon is the boot volumeThe new drive has three partitions: Tardis, Doctor, and Rose. Tardis is the boot volume. So I've put Leopard into the Tardis Drive. Much to the chagrin of the 5th incarnation.I commented to shimmeringjemmy that I would now transition all the old files to the new OS.I said... "The file transfer now begins. Everything from Babalon into the Tardis"Only in my twisted, geeky, philosophical worlds would I actually try to put everything that comes from Babalon into the Tardis. And somewhere an author in Boston has just sprayed coffee across the room.

2008-04-01 10:45:52
I haven't decided if I'm playing yet. So.. the current status is no.So, this morning I have been swamped with IMs... How did it go?Well, the good was that Aiden stayed asleep in his bed for several hours. I'd put a gate up at the end of the bedroom corridor and a 2nd gate in the open doorway of the master bedroom. And then daddy genes kicked in. Is it too cold in his room. Is he sleeping okay? What if the gate comes down? Will he fall down the kitchen stairs to the basement. That's right... he slept... I didn't.Somewhere between midnight and 1 I heard the crying. I suppose this is good because it would inevitably lead to me getting more sleep.I wandered into his room. He was sitting up in bed crying. The "Where is everyone? Why is it dark?" cry. I picked him up. He quickly went limp on my sh

2008-04-05 03:48:49
Tonight was the Aries Bash. If you think that once 4 pagans know something ... no secret can be kept.YOU ARE WRONG.Two months ago an idea was born in our basement.Led on by ladydrakaina about 7-8 people organized, raised the funds for airfare, andbrought S.J. Tucker and K from Little Rock, Arkansas to the Aries Bash.We did not know. We were feeding aiden_freeman in the dining room and I was presented with guests who I had no idea were even in my time zone.SJ and Betsy performed about 90 minutes of music.So... I wanted before writing my weekend post, just a moment of bragging rights. So fiannaharpar and shadesong you reallllly need to come out for my parties. You never know (I know I had no clue) who might show up.
