Bags of books and maybe a job 2007-10-31 20:24:10 I am sorry to say that I’ve been a bit lazy on posting the last few weeks though it is my intention to better myself. Last Saturday I was at the sale held by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters and named “Archaeobook blowout” by Martin Rundqvist at Aardvarchaeology.
And Good Golly Miss Molly did they have books, lots of titles on interesting sites, finds and research; Mainly on history, art history, architecture, archaeology, runes etc. I got my fair sheer; about 10 bags at the going rate 50 Swedish kronor (ca 5,5 €)/bag.
They opened the sale at 10.00 so me and my girl was there at approximately 09.30 and got a little shock, the queue was at least 75-100 meters long. When we got in it was easily 200 meters. An hour later when we got out, the queue was even longer. As we passed the queue with all our bags filled with books, very heavy bags, we saw a lot of friends and colleagues that shoot us long views of envy (and who said hallo).
I won’t bore you with all
Check out Four stone Hearth vol. 27 2007-11-07 15:29:40 The Four Stone Hearth blog carnival vol. 27 is hosted by the blog Sorting out Science. A blog with the under title: Science for people who never realized that science could be interesting. I haven’t had time to write a specific post for this edition but the author still found a post of mine worthy of mentioning, many thanks!
Besides my post there are a lot of interesting posts on archaeology, anthropology, osteology and much more such blog candy. Among others I found a blog that I’ve missed called Archaeozoology that I found interesting, though I’ve only have scaned a few post randomly.

. The grave mounds were stunning, but I feel as winter is coming on it is time for another motive.
This picture shows a part of the wooden inner roof of the church of Dädesjö, the paintings are very well preserved and dated to 13th century and is probably painted by Sigmund.
At this webpage, more pictures and information is available both in Swedish and in English.
And another interesting feature in this church are painted runic texts which I have written about here.

Stockholm - Beijing - Växjö - Haparanda - Stockholm - Växjö = 2007 2007-11-05 03:05:52 I am going back to Växjö, at least until Christmas. For the fourth time it is time to pack my bags and take employment at the County board of Kronoberg, this time I will work with ancient monuments in areas that are due for reforesting. In Sweden one has to report to the Swedish Forest Agency when it is time to do felling of wood and reforesting and if there are ancient monuments in the area a special decision with information of the cultural heritage is sent to the land owner. This is principally what I will do until Christmas and hopefully a few months afterwards, we’ll see. It’s been a year with extensive travel, first to China, then to Växjö, to Haparanda and now to Växjö again. This is in many ways nice and fun but it is also a bit stressful, but it is nice to have a job.

Back in Växjö 2007-11-12 03:17:56 Today I start working in Växjö at the county administrative board of Kronoberg again. I’ll be here at least until December 31st (though I’ll be in Stockholm during the weekends). As I watch out my office window big snowflakes are falling and I feel good about working indoors. I didn’t find time to visit the new exhibition at the Museum of National Antiquities before I left, but I hope to be able to do so at the end of the week.

Excavation in Södertälje November 2007 2007-11-17 03:51:11 A few pictures of the stone setting I will excavate the coming weekend. It is located a few miles NW of Södertälje and is heavily damaged. What is left it WNW part of the grave, if it is a grave.
Picture taken from N
We have used a probe to determine how deep the layer of earth is and if we could see any cultural residue, the earth is ca 10-15 cm deep and it seems very homogenous.

Many of the stones that lie on or nearby the construction are probably a result of nearby constructions. They have sharp edges which resembles stones damaged by explosions. This added to the fact that ca 75 % of the construction is disturbed not only by this but from the fact that in must have been plundered of stones in an earlier stage. This makes it somewhat difficult to determine the original size and appearance of the construction. The picture from NE seems to indicate a square form, this might be an illusion as many of these stones are probably a later edition.

Soon it is time for some winter excavation 2007-11-14 07:30:05 It seems there will be yet another excavation this year for me. Next weekend on the 23-24th November I will participate in the excavation of a stone setting, or a probable stone setting I should say. It is in a bad condition and there is not more than ca 25 % left which leads to the risk that through the damages it has been misinterpret. If it is a grave, it should be from the late Bronze or early Iron Age, and if there comes bones I’ll analyze them, now isn’t that nice. The site is located some miles NV of Södertälje.
More info about the grave and some pictures ‘ll come as the work progresses.

Reports on the damaged ancient monuments due to the storm Gudrun 2005 in Kronoberg County. 2007-11-18 12:54:01 A few days ago my second report on the surveys and the work of reconstruction of ancient monuments in Kronoberg County
came from the presses. Both are available to order from the County Administrative Board of Kronoberg, though they are only available in Swedish.
The titles are:
I rotvältors land… - resultat från skadeinventeringen 2005 - 2006. Länsstyrelsens meddelande 2007:03 (In the land of uprooted trees… - results from the surveys 2005-2006. County Board report 2007:03).

Excavation report II 2007-11-25 05:42:45 The excavation is finished, in the west half of the presumed construction we didn’t find any artefacts or reminiscence of constructions. We found a crevice where the earth was darker which gave us some hope of finding some residues of a grave, but the earth was not fatty and we found no pieces of coal, cremated bones or ash.
The east haft the construction, the flat rock is visible.
The construction can best be described as a stone setting of the type called Äckel, which can be described as stone settings situated upon flat rocks. They are often constructed by stones of different size and seems a bit unorganized, in other words the construction plan isn’t all that obvious. It is not unusual that the finds made are found in crevices, and one interpretation is that these where used as the primary grave and then covered with rocks. It is not that unusual that there is no finds at all due to the construction form and the elements of nature.
The concentration of visible ston Read more:Excavation

Excavation report 2007-11-23 10:18:57 As report
ed in previous posts I am excavating a stone setting in Enhörna parish, just outside of SödertäljeThe first day of the dig has been good if one sees to the amount of work we’ve finished, more than half the work done. The weather Gods has not really been on our side but it could have been a lot worse, it’s been a bit cold and we’ve gotten a share of rain and snow. As we dig close by a junior level school we’ve had visitors coming and going all day long, with a lot a questions and thoughts. We’ll dig tomorrow as well and finish it all up.
As it seems right now we have nothing that proves that this is a grave, we’ve found no coal or ashes, no cremated bones, no ceramics and we’ve seen no structures. What we have found is rather large stones with sharp edges, ca 0,4-0,7 meter and very few other objects. And the objects we’ve found is quite recent, a crowbar, some shards of glass from a bottle etc.
There are no pictures today, bu Read more:Excavation
Office archaeology 2007-12-04 10:44:36 During the last month and until the New Year I’m working at the County Administrative Board of Kronoberg, where I have worked on and off since 2005. This time around I am working on catching up, there are loads of decrees that needs to be sent. Most the of the decrees regards reforesting and are due to the storms Gudrun and Per that hit Sweden in 2005 and 2006.
The decrees I work with all regards reforesting in areas where there are ancient monuments and are designed to inform the landowner about the whereabouts of and the type of monuments that are on his land. They also inform the landowner of his or hers obligations. The decrees are designed to protect the monuments via different regulations, for example the County Administrative board does not allow soil scarification or does only allow a certain method of soil scarification on or in areas with ancient monuments, the County Administrative board does neither allow plantation on prehistoric graves or constructions. A problem t
Åke Hyenstrand 1939-2007 2007-12-01 05:46:39 I was informed by Martin Rundqvist at Aardvarchaeology that the former head of the archaeological department at Stockholm University Åke Hyenstrand has past away. I believe that Hyenstrand will be remembered foremost for his contributions to Scandinavian and Swedish archaeology during the 70’s and 80’s, especially his works concerning the care of our cultural heritage and his large scale analysis of the results of the national survey of ancient monument in the 70’s.
My thoughts go out to his family and close ones.

Storm related Archaeology in Sweden 2007-12-13 13:42:20 Â Today I updated the Kronoberg county administrative board web page, or at least the page that regards surveys after the storms Gudrun and Per. As it is written in Swedish I thought that I could translate it and publish it here as well, see the original page in Swedish here.

surveys1 and restorations of ancient monuments and remains in Kronoberg County 2005-2007.
1) Surveys to establish the amount of damage the storm Gudrun (2005) and Per (2006) caused on ancient monuments and remains.
After the storm Gudrun there was a need to estimate how many, where and to what extent ancient monuments in the county had been damaged. The information collected in the surveys has been used to determine where and what actions that has been need to make. The information is also available for future research. During the surveys more than 2000 ancient monuments have been visited and more than 150 has been reconstructed or restored in some way. Three monuments have been excavated due to the damages Read more:Archaeology
