Mohammedan SC Dhaka 2-1 Oldham Athletic 2007-05-08 20:16:00 Oldham Athletic received a hostile welcome when the youth side of the English club lost their first exhibition match to Mohammedan Sporting Club yesterday.Nigerian forwards Mwach Ukwu Paul and Emeka Christina struck first half goals in the home side's 2-1 victory at the Bangabandhu National Stadium as the visitors wilted under scorching heat.Matt Barlow scored a consolation goal for the Latics, who were forced to make nine changes at the break and looked better under lights.A few thousand crowds, however, enjoyed a lively start by the black and whites who went ahead after 20 minutes.Paul and Emeka dictated the terms early and their hard work paid off after Zahid initiated the move at the right flank. Taking the ball from the midfielder, Paul got inside the box but his shot came off a forest of legs and Emeka made no mistake to drill the ball into the bottom corner.Six minutes later, Emeka forced a fine save by Ryan Smith, the goalkeeper who has already played for the senior side in th
Cruciani Sacked or Relieved? 2007-05-06 22:33:00 Abahani parted with Argentine coach Diego Cruciani after 11 weeks as both parties felt it was the right thing to do.Cruciani, who coached the Bangladesh national team for just over one year, took charge on February 15 and led Abahani in eight matches in the ongoing professional football league. However, his name was erased from the starting list of the sky-blues yesterday's B. League game against Arambagh, which Abahani played under their good old coach Amlesh Sen."Shortly after his arrival, Cruciani put pressure on us, threatening to leave because of the crowd pressure. He was irritated by the fans' behaviour at training ground and at the match venues. Finally, he asked for full time security," said Abahani manager Satyajit Das Rupu after Abahani's 2-0 win over Arambagh."We did not find any reason to provide him such security because the fans were never threatening. After our loss to Khulna Abahani, the club management thought it was the right time for him to go," he added.Sources s Read more:Sacked

Arambagh's Second Win 2007-03-28 21:02:00 Second half goals by striking pair Nico Dimas and Mujibur Rahman Ritu inspired Arambagh to their second successive win in the B. League when they blanked Dhaka rivals Farashganj 2-0 yesterday.Arambagh, who recorded their first victory in the previous round against touring Chittagong Abahani with a brace from Kenyan debutant Dimas, had to wait for exactly an hour to go ahead at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.Dimas showed exquisite control with the ball when he picked up a long pass from Ugandan midfielder Dominic and dodged past two rival defenders before breaking the deadlock with a low drive inside from the box for his third league goal after.Ritu sealed the victory 16 minutes later when the substitute finished a counter attack with a tremendous grounder just inside from the area.Arambagh maintained third place with seven points from four games while Farashganj, who have played a game less, remained on four points at the end of the fourth week. The league resumes on Friday with title Read more:Second

Kazi Salahuddin Interview 2007-03-18 18:34:00 Take it from the legendEvery country has its own Pele or Maradona. The two living football legends are worshipped all over the world and Bangladesh is not an exception. But surprisingly, no footballer has ever been called the Pele or Maradona of Bangladesh. Rather, our country had their own answer to the greats: Salahuddin. An intelligent striker and exquisite ball-player, Kazi Salahuddin remains arguably the best footballer ever produced by the nation. His skill and showmanship could alone bring 20,000 people to the ground even in a match of less importance, which is unimaginable nowadays even in an Abahani-Mohammedan clash. To this day, he remains the only man to have played as a professional footballer. Now a businessman and vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation, Salahuddin still manages to cut ties with the world on Saturdays and Sundays just to watch live football, a fact that gives just an idea about his love for the beautiful game. What made him a great and popular fo

Foreigners Uncertain 2007-03-02 16:37:00 In spite of spending over crores, neither Abahani nor Muktijoddha go into today's B. League opener with their confidence sky-high.The draw has put their fate to meet in the opening match although the local heavyweights are used to get enough time by playing small timers to prepare for the big matches towards the end of a tournament.Playing a big match as their first match of the season, however, does not bother mentors of the two title contenders. What pricks them most is the uncertainty over picking their starting line-up.A few warm-up matches were not enough for measuring the strength of the squad, yet, or even making up the mind for a format or planning for the opposition although the biggest names of local football flock for the two teams. The national footballers have virtually chosen the two camps this season, the seniors showed their loyalty to Muktijoddha, and the younger ones joined Abahani. And both the coaches, Diego Cruciani of Abahani and Abu Yusuf of Muktijoddha know the se Read more:Uncertain

under-23 side.Tony Philliskirk's outfit excelled themselves in baking 39-degree heat in the coastal town of Sylhet, with Director Ian Hill describing them as "an absolute credit to the club."Pearson put his side ahead with a sublime effort from the edge of the area after just quarter of an hour as Latics battled manfully in trying conditions. The hosts equalised just before the break, with a strike from prolific Farashganj striker Mohammed Robin, but Latics were the better side once again in the second period and created a number of opportunities to win the game.

Union brushed aside basement side Rahamatganj 6-2 in both sides' ultimate first-leg match in the B. League yesterday.Apart from the Nigerian striker's three goals, Faisal Mahmud struck twice and Monwar added the other for the defending two-time Premier League champions, who completed half of the league on 15 points. The hapless Rahamatganj, who reduced the arrears through Apu and Shoeb before Milon missed an injury time penalty, stuck to two points after ten rounds. The Oranges, virtually out of the title race, climbed to fifth place with their overall fourth win in ten outings but Syed Nayeemuddin's side could slip one place below if Wednesday's match between Arambagh and Chittagong Mohammedan does not end in a draw.Brothers who came to the game on the back of a 1-0 loss to Mohammedan, began brightly and Faisal cut the ball back from left to set up the opener after 13 minutes. First Leg Enters Last Week Today 2007-05-10 18:45:00 The final round of the B. League's first leg begins a day earlier with struggling giants Brothers Union meeting basement side Rahmatganj today at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.Apart from Muktijoddha, who finished all their ten matches to stay atop the table with 18 points, remaining ten teams will be involved in the last week games.Mohammedan, who buried a wretched start to bounce back in the title race with a late flurry of wins, look set to topple the Reds as they host unfancied Khulna Abahani, who however earned the reputation of giant killers after away wins over Dhaka heavyweights Brothers and Abahani. A win will take Shafiqul Islam Manik's black and whites two points clear of Muktijoddha. They will maintain the top spot until the second leg begins in June if Abahani and Sheikh Russel, who are also level on 18 points but have inferior goal differences than Muktijoddha, draw in the last match. The winner between Abahani and Russel, however, will take pole position midway throug Read more:First

Mohammedan SC Dhaka Thrash Khulna 6-1 2007-05-14 00:02:00 Mohammedan Sporting club finished their first leg campaign of the B. Abahani Ltd Dhaka 0-0 Oldham Athletic 2007-05-12 19:55:00 Abahani played out a goalless draw with English tourists, Oldham Athletic, in the third and last exhibition match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday. The match produced a lot of excitement with both Abahani and Oldham playing attacking football, but failed to produce any result.Abahani dominated most of the proceedings and got several chances though failed to convert any of those into goal, much to the disappointment of the local fans in the big bowl. They came close to scoring as early as in the 14th minute, but Awudu Ibrahim's powerful shot from vantage position whistled past the post. The hosts got another chance in the 22nd minute, this time a feeble shot by Tipu from inside the D-box went straight to the safe hands of Oldham custodian Josh Bell.Abahani were deprived of a goal in the 38th minute when Ibrahim's powerful shot sailed over the crossbar. After the break, Tipu missed his second chance to give Abahani the lead when his angular shot from inside the D-box was par
