Steelers Would be Fools to Move Fanaca 2007-04-25 14:33:21 At this point of having a new coach and a new attitude come into Pittsburgh, the team would be foolish to make a move to trade super offensive lineman Alan Fanaca to the Cardinals for the chance to move up in the first round. The rumor bug has been sailing around, saying that Fanaca wants to be reunited with offensive line coach Russ Grimm and former coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who now both are in Arizona. Whis as the head coach, and Grimm as an assistant.
Fanaca was outspoken when the Steelers
upper brass passed up on both Grimm and Whis to hire Mike Tomlin as the teams new head coach back in January. Now, with one year left on his contract, the OL is upset because of the stall in getting him a new deal. This past weekend Fanaca was absent from the teams first mini-camp, though it was not mandatory. The next one is though, and new coach Tomlin has already stated that he will reach out to Fanaca to try and get him to be at the camp.
The Steelers could grab a few draft choices or move u Read more:Fools
2007 NFL Mock Draft 2007-04-25 14:21:00 Well, everyone else has one - so here at nflgridirongab.com we have done our homework and put together our own mock draft. With just four days left till the big day, here is how we have the first round breaking down with some comments by some of, but not all of the picks.
1. Oakland - JaMarcus Russell QB - No brainer here that if the Raiders want to start rebuilding, they need to do it with a franchise QB, and Russell is just that.
2. Detroit - Joe Thomas OL - The Lions also need a lot of help, and they will get it with this stud lineman.
3. Cleveland - Brady Quinn QB - So much for the Charlie Frye era in Cleveland. The Browns cannot afford to miss on this pick, and Quinn is a lifelong Brows fan, so overall its a perfect match.
4. Tampa Bay - Calvin Johnson WR - The Bucs are in desperate need of a playmaker on offense, and while QB is still a question, Jon Gruden knows they need this big time talent now.
5. Arizona - Gaines Adams DE - Cards could use help on the D-Line, and Adams is th Read more:Draft
Raiders Should Not Outhink Themselves Away From Russell 2007-04-24 13:14:13 Sitting in the cat bird seat at number one is not always a good thing in the NFL Draft. It usually means you are one of, if not, the worst team in football, and this year that distinction goes to the Oakland Raiders
, who are in the process of trying to nail down what top guy they want to take with the number one pick. The choices seem pretty simple - you either take the franchise QB in LSU’s JaMarcus Russell
, who everyone seems to think they take, QB - Brady Quinn from Notre Dame, or Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, who many think is the overall best player in the draft.
Watching Aaron Brooks and comedy of QB errors from others a season ago for Oakland, the obvious choice in this spot is Russell, who may not play right away, but could be like Vince Young and be in the starting lineup by week 6 or 7. Former Raiders coach Tom Flores stated the other day on a Cleveland talk show that he felt that Russell would be the choice at one for Oakland. The funny thing now is a report says tha
Saturday’s Top Three Picks Anything but Settled 2007-04-23 14:52:45 With the draft just days away, many teams are doing the usual job of throwing up smokescreens as to what they are going to do when the time comes that they are on the board for that all important first pick. A few things are certain, but many more are not. One thing that seems to be in place is that the Oakland Raiders are going to use that first pick, and not make a deal to move down and acquire more picks. The Raiders are in desperate need of a high impact player on offense, and most draft boards have them taking LSU QB JaMarcus Russell with the top pick.
After that things become very hazy. The Detroit Lions, a team that could use just about everything, are taking calls right and left for teams with offers for them move up in that spot and for the Lions to get picks and at the same time move down. If the Lions do stay at number two, and I don’t think they will based on their huge amount of needs, the player it looks like they would take is DE Gaines Adams from Clemson. Big Ben Takes a Jab at Former Coach Cowher 2007-04-22 20:00:44 A new year and a new look for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who kicked off their first mini-camp over the weekend. One fact that came out to the media that may have been a bit of a shock was from QB Ben Roethlisberger, who told the media that he and former coach Bill Cowher
are not exactly on each other’s Christmas card list.
“Our relationship wasn’t great because he was here before I got here and I was just a young kid,” Roethlisberger said Friday to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There was tension between the two for the three seasons in which Cowher coached the QB. Cowher often talked about keeping Big Ben
in line with the plays called, while Ben was the type of QB who liked to make things happen, running around in and out of the pocket to try and make a big play.
That style though, despite what Cowher may say or think, is exactly what took the Steelers to the Super Bowl title two seasons ago. Big Ben made huge plays in all four playoff games, and it was his ability Read more:Former

Is Jones’ Full Page Promise Sincere Enough? 2007-04-22 18:31:59 Can anyone for one second really buy how “sincere” Adam “Pacman” Jones was in his recent purchase of a full-page ad saying how he would regain the trust of the fans and his team? Jones, who has had to talk to police on 10 different occasions due to run-ins with the law, stated that he will appeal his suspension which currently has him missing the entire 2007 season with the Titans.
The letter to the paper states that in the past few weeks, Jones has “learned a lifetime of lessions.” It says that he will “stop making poor choices that have put him in his position,” and that he is going to re-enroll and West Virgina Univ. and finish his degree. NFL commish Roger Goodell did recently say that Jones may be able to come back to playing after 10 games if he meets certain requirments.
The issue to me with Jones is if this is just a ploy to try and make him look good to the commish as well as those in power that put this year-long s Read more:Sincere

Rams Interested In Deal to Grab Troubled Williams 2007-04-20 14:42:13 The troubled career of running back Ricky Williams
could find a twist this upcoming season as he will likely get another shot to play in the NFL. Sources say that Williams, who was suspended for the past season for substance abuse, is getting some vibes that the St.Louis Rams may be interested in his services for the 2007 season. Williams played under current Rams coach Scott Linehan in Miami when Linehan was the Dolphins offensive coordinator. He would be brought to the team to be Steven Jackson’s backup.
“I know there would be a certain amount of risk involved, but I would just because he deserves that based on what he was able to do,” Linehan stated Thursday. Of course another thing that would have to be worked out is a deal that would bring Williams to the Rams, as he is currently under contract to the Dolphins. In his last season in the league, Williams ran for 743 yards serving much of 2005 as the main backup to Ronnie Brown in Miami.

Tampa Bay Talking Deal to Move Up to Take Johnson 2007-04-17 14:35:20 The Tampa
Bay Buccaneers are looking to move up the list in the upcoming NFL Draft, and word is the player they are targeting is wide out Calvin Johnson
. The move makes perfect sense for the Bucs, who went out and grabbed last years surprise QB in Jeff Garcia, and are sorely in need of a big playmaker on offense, and Johnson fits that bill. Tampa Bay
GM Bruce Allen has been talking to Raiders owner Al Davis about moving up, and Davis is considering the move according to sources.
Word is that Tampa Bay is looking to offer the Raiders all four of their picks in the first three rounds just for the chance to move up to one to take Johnson, who many consider to be the best athlete in the draft. Johnson and the Bucs met on Friday, and Johnson’s agent said the meeting went well. Of course they also met with QB’s JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn, but pretty much everyone in the league knows that they have their eyes set on Johnson.
The pressure is on Tampa Bay and more on head coac Read more:Talking

Green to Miami to Get Done This Week 2007-04-15 20:44:55 Now that Dante Culpepper is basically on his way out in Miami
, you can bet that the Dolphins are going to do whatever it takes to get the Trent Green
deal done by the end of this week. The Dolphins are in dire straits after getting a weekend minicamp done in which they quickly realized that they have no real quarterabck. Culpepper continues to try and come back from a knee injury, and he didn’t take a snap over the weekend. Sources say that he will be released once the Green deal gets done.
The Chiefs had been trying to hold out for a second round draft choice from the Dolphins, and the fish wanted all along to give KC a number three. Now that they are in a tough spot, the Dolphins may be forced to give up that number two that they really wanted to hang on to. Right now the only quarterbacks that took snaps over the weekend for the Dolphis were Cleo Lemon and Gibran Hamdan. In other words, Miami has no choice but to try and get something done, and Green is clearly the guy they wa
Moss to Pats a Great Move by New England 2007-04-29 20:25:46 The New England
Patriots have once again made a solid deal, this time making a deal with the Oakland Raiders to acquire wide out Randy Moss for a 4th round draft choice in this years NFL Draft. Moss became an afterthought for the Raiders after the team got first pick QB JaMarcus Russell, then later in the day made a deal with the Lions for wide reciever Mike Williams. It gives Williams a shot to revive a career that has been pretty much lackluster for the Lions.
Moss should be able to get his career, which has been pretty much at a standstill back up to speed with the Pats and quarterback Tom Brady. It did not seem like the Raiders were all that upset at getting rid of him. “We felt this was the best scenario for both the Raiders and Randy,” Oakland coach Lane Kiffin said. “We wish him nothing but the best.” The Pats have already added a couple of wide outs this offseason, including Donte’ Stallworth, Kelly Washington, and Wes Walker. Dolphins Shock Everyone with Pick of Ginn Jr. 2007-04-28 20:04:28 Wow. That is the word that quickly came out of my mouth when the announcement of Ted Ginn Jr. being the 9th overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft to the Miami Dolphins
came down. Ginn, who may have been the best wide out in the draft, was expected to go in the mid to late first round, and I personally had him going #19 to the Tennessee Titans. Ginn is a wide out that can be a playmaker and all this move does means that the deal to get Trent Green to the Dolphins basically has to be done.
How can Miami pass on Brady Quinn and go with a wide out? Well, again, here has to be what’s happening. One - Trent Green is going to be your opening day starter for the Dolphins. That deal with the Chiefs has to be done, and you can bet by the end of the day that he’ll be a fish. Two - a rumor that has been floating around for the Dolphins to be ready to deal or get rid of Marty Booker as their second wide out has also got to be in the works. Miami can have a great combo with Ch Read more:Shock
Vikings Get Homerun Hitter with Peterson 2007-04-28 19:37:48 Adrain Peterson
is the best back in the draft, and this was a great pick by the Minnesota Vikings
. Chester Taylor and Peterson will make a nice 1-2 punch for the Vikings, who with playing indoors at the Metrodome could have a great running game. Peterson is the home run hitter, can catch the football and could very well be the rookie of the year for the Vikings.
The quarterback spot is still iffy with Tavaris Jackson, but the chance to get a 6-1, 200 pound back with the speed of Peterson, there was no way that the Vikings should have passed on him for Brady Quinn. It is rare in this league to be able to get a back with the type of power and speed that Peterson has. Now of course there is the chance of a big injury, and his collarbone is a concern, but the upside on Peterson outweighs the injury that Peterson suffered last season.
Bucs and Adams a Good Fit at the Number Four Spot 2007-04-28 18:58:43 Defense is the way that the Tampa Bay Bucs went with their first pick in Saturday’s draft, and I think that is about the only move they could have made. Gaines Adams
, a stud defensive end from Clemson was the best pick for the Bucs, as they really need to start thinking about re-tooling that defense that is getting older by the day. He is closer to Simeon Rice when it comes to great Bucs defensive players of the draft, and if he can be that player, then Tampa Bay will be thrilled.
He is a speed guy, and a guy that can make some plays for Tampa Bay in his first year. Don’t forget that Mario Wiliams was number one overall, and I think that Adams is about the same type of player. Maybe not 100 percent as good, but very close, and Tampa Bay was able to get him at four instead of having to spend that #1 pick and money on him.
Yes, Tampa Bay is still in some trouble on offense, but they will have time to shore that up before 2007 opening day. Now though, they have what Read more:Number
Browns Make Safe Pick Going with Thomas 2007-04-28 18:51:53 The Cleveland Browns
for some reason seem to have enough faith in quarterback Charlie Frye to keep him as the starter for one more season, as the team passed today on quarterback Brady Quinn and take Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas
. I know this team well considering I have covered them since 1999, and while Thomas is a safe pick, he is a good pick for this franchise. The left tackle is a position that this team really needs, and while it is not the glamour pick that fans may have wanted, it was the right pick.
This team cannot run the football very well, and now with Jamal Lewis instead of Ruben Droughens they think with a new 6-foot-6, 311 pound left tackle that it will be enough to start being able to run the ball and be effective in doing it. Thomas was a brick wall a season ago for Wisconsin, and he has great feet and the only concern is a bit of lack of power, which he had better get if he is going to go toe to toe with the big guys in the NFL.
The biggest concern for Read more:Going
Can Johnson Do Enough to Turn Lions Around? 2007-04-28 18:39:20 Calvin Johnson
at 6-foot-5 with 4.3 speed was the best player in this draft, and for that reason, he was not going to last long, which is why the fans of Detroit were on their feet when they heard their ugly franchise had taken him. Johnson is the best wide out on the roster right now for the Lions
, which says a lot considering the money and picks they have spent over the last few seasons on wide recievers.
This is not to let Detroit off the hook by any means. They still have a ton they have to do with that roster if they are going to try and get back to even .500 in this league. They have a lot of things they have to do with the skill positions at quarterback and running back, and that is not even talking about a defense that gave up a ton of yards last season with a new head coach. For now, good move, and about the only move for Detroit, but once the honeymoon is over with Johnson, this team still has a long way to go.

Russell By Far the Best Pick for Oakland 2007-04-28 18:31:07 Did anyone ever think any differently? Yes Raider Nation, you got your man, and I for one can’t wait to see what LSU Quarterback JaMarcus Russell
will be able to do in Silver and Black out in the Black Hole. It was the right pick at the right time for the Raiders, who missed out a season ago on both Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler. If they would have taken one of those players, they would have been able to sit back this year and take the best player in the draft - wide out Calvin Johnson.
But such is life for Russell, who will come in with a new coach for a team that has not been competitive since they made a Super Bowl run with Rich Gannon as the QB six seasons ago. Russell finished his college career at 25-4, and was the best quarterback in college football last season. That is why as of 12:27 Saturday afternoon, JaMarcus Russell was and will remain as the best pick for the Oakland
Raiders.
Plenty of Teams Could Still Use Keyshawn 2007-05-02 17:31:15 So what it is going to take for a team to take a chance on 35-year-old wide out Keyshawn Johnson? The former Panther today finds himself without a team, as Carolina announced yesterday that Johnson was shown the door, this on the recent decision of the team to go in a younger direction with their wide recievers. Johnson has a career in TV, but for now, some teams will think that he has 1-2 years left catching the football. Below are a few teams that will surely give Keyshawn a look.
Philadelphia - The Eagles are always one of those teams that seems to be in need of a quality wide out. Not that Johnson would be able to do what Terrell Owens did three seasons ago in Philly, but he would be able to add something to their wide out core. Reggie Brown and Greg Lewis were the two starters at wide out last year, so you know that Johnson could help this core in a pinch.
San Diego - The reciever core in SD is pretty weak, as tight end Antonio Gates led the team last year with 71 catche Read more:Plenty
Eagles Reid Assures McNabb He’s Their Man 2007-05-02 15:52:19 You’ve got to love the Eagles quick moves to try and soothe quarterback Donovan McNabb
after the team did the right thing in planning for the future this past weekend in drafting a quarterback with their first pick. Word is Donovan’s ego was riled after the team went out and snagged Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb with the 36th pick of the draft. Quick to make things right, Eagles coach Andy Reid called McNabb, telling him not to worry, that drafting Kolb was not a sign that McNabb’s job is in jeopardy.
My question is - why not? Sure Donovan was having a great season last year before getting hurt, but let’s face the facts. It’s now two straight years that an injury to the Chunky Soup star has put the Eagles season on life support. Two years ago, they never recovered and had a bad season, while last year they were saved by the tremendous QB play of Jeff Garcia, and made it to the second round of the playoffs.
So why not plan ahead? With Garcia in
Why Brady is Right for the Browns - He Shines in the Face of Adversity 2007-05-02 06:24:48 Despite Cleveland’s stellar draft the team is not going to all of a sudden turn into a winner. They will battle adversity all season long as they have in the past, but no one is more likely to flourish in that situation than Brady
Quinn. He proved that on draft day. After he began slipping quickly in the draft, NFL commissioner Roger Godell invited Quinn into a private room so he didn’t have to face the media during that nerve-wracking wait. What did Quinn do? He agreed to an interview with ESPN. During that interview Quinn displayed his exemplary character.
The most valuable trait that he demonstrated during the draft was his composure. He will need that composure when he steps under center for the Cleveland Browns
. Quinn not only has composure off of the field but on the field as well. He proved that throughout his illustrious career at Notre Dame.
First of all, the starting quarterback at Notre Dame is always under an international high-powered microscope on and off the field an Read more:Right
Panthers Say So Long to Keyshawn 2007-05-02 03:14:29 The Panthers
, on the heels of drafting USC wide out Dwayne Jarrett on Saturday, have bid farewell to reciever Keyshawn Johnson. The former Jet, Buc and Cowboy was released by his fourth team on Tuesday, as the team moves in another direction towards getting younger at reciever. “We appreciated the contribution of Keyshawn in his season with the Panthers,” coach John Fox said. “He brought us high production, but at this time, we are in a situation in which we have a number of young receivers and thought this was the right time to make the decision.”
Keyshawn will turn 35 in July, so he likely would get some looks from other teams if he wanted to throw himself into the free agent mix. He did look rather good and did a nice job this past weekend working as a guest on ESPN during he draft. It likely wouldn’t take much for him to move from the field to the booth, if that is the direction he wanted to go in.
He is the 16th wide out with 800 career catches, and
Tampa Takes a Chance on Former Number One Sims 2007-05-02 01:40:05 The Tampa
Bay Bucs, knowing that they still need help on a defense that is getting older, are taking a shot with a former number one draft choice that was a bust with the Chiefs. Tuesday, the team acquired the 6th overall pick in the 2002 draft - DT Ryan Sims from KC for an undisclosed draft choice. Sims played in 59 games with the Chiefs, starting 36 of them, but overall underwhelmed the team and was always out of shape and usually hurt.Sims did have one decent season, 2003, when he had three sacks and one forced and one fumble recovery. He will add depth to a D-line that was bolstered last weekend with the NFL Draft that produced the teams number one pick - Gaines Adams. Overall Tampa Bay used 7 of their 10 draft picks on defense. Right now the team has Chris Hovan and Ellis Wyms at the D-Tackle spots, but with Adams likely to take one spot, the other may still be up for grabs.
At 6-foot-4 and 315 pounds, if Sims can get himself in solid playing shape, he may be able to help out a de Read more:Former

Dolphins Miss the Boat on Taking Ginn over Quinn 2007-05-01 13:57:35 It is easy to second guess when it comes to the NFL Draft, but I don’t think that many people are really on the fence when it comes to talking about the Miami Dolphins
. The tone of talking about their draft usually comes down to the same theory - what were they thinking? The Dolphins, in dire need of a quarterback, passed on Notre Dame signal caller Brady Quinn
, and instead pulled off the shocker of the draft by taking injured Ohio State speedy wide out Ted Ginn Jr. Ginn, who injured his foot in the National Title game vs Florida, was a first round pick on many boards, but for sure not at number 9.
The decision to take Ginn did not sit well with the Dolphins faithful, as shock and outrage quickly overtook the teams draft party. When new head coach Cam Cameron came to the mic to tell the fans the news about taking Ginn, he was met with a chorus of boos, and you could tell that he cut his speech short due to the catcalls he was getting from the crowd. The bottom line is Miami has n Read more:Taking
How Much Longer Can Vick Get Away with Issues? 2007-05-04 02:44:23 Can one wonder if Michael Vick is headed down the road of destruction? First we have the whole incident where he tosses out a water bottle at an airport in Miami that authorities want to take a gander at. Vick had a hiding spot in the bottle, and authorities thought they were seeing some sort of illegal substance (IE - Pot) in the hiding spot of the bottle. It took awhile, but Vick finally was deemed innocent for the bottle. Then there was the whole finger flipping incident in his own home stadium last year that didn’t excatly show up on the cover of the Falcons Chirstmas cards.
Then of course there was the failure to show up for scheduled appearance on Capital Hill for after-school funding, yet another black eye for the QB and the Falcons organization. Vick’s name came out on Thursday linked to the website Read more:Issues
Leaving College Early: Bad Decision or Good Decision? 2007-05-03 15:59:44 For some college football players it is obvious that they should leave college early to enter the NFL draft. If their projected draft status is high enough, then leaving school early and cashing in on that first round signing bonus is the smart move because a players draft status can drop with the slightest tear of an A.C.L. or the decision to go after a 3rd national title a la Matt Leinart. Players like JaMarcus Russell, Calvin Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Lawrence Timmons, Greg Olsen, Reggie Nelson, Anthony Gonzalez, Ted Ginn Jr., Jon Beason, Jamaal Anderson, Jarvis Moss, Robert Meachem, Marshawn Lynch and Darrelle Revis all made smart decisions based on their projected “Big Money” draft status. The proof is in the pudding; all of the above-mentioned players were drafted in the first round. Below is a list of players who made the decision to enter the draft based on something other than basic common sense and draft day proved it…

Heisman Winner Smith Out to Prove Critics Wrong 2007-05-03 14:45:29 If you think for one minute that it won’t stick in the back of his mind all the teams that passed on Heisman
quarterback Troy Smith
- think again. Smith is set to wear purple this season and will likely start out, but not end up as the number three quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens. I’ll go out on a limb and say that we will see Smith lineup under center in more than one NFL game this season for the Ravens. One reason is due to how fragile quarterback Steve McNair has been over the past few seasons, and the other is the fact that Kyle Boller is….well, Kyle Boller. Plus truth be told with Boller being a free agent at the end of the season, you would think the staff would want to give Smith a long look if the opportunity presented itself.
Smith was taken a bit later than where many thought he would be. Most had him going in mid to late third round, or possibly early fourth, but instead he made it all the way to the late fifth round, going with the number 175 pick in Read more:Prove

Olympic Sprinter Gatlin at Buccaneers Mini-Camp 2007-05-06 20:48:09 Justin Gatlin is facing up to an 8-year suspension from track and field for testing positive for testosterone and other steroids last summer. Gatlin tested the waters of Arizona and Houston but the Buccaneers
were the only team to offer him a formal workout. The Buccaneers will decide whether to sign Gatlin and invite him back to next week’s mini-camp following this weekend’s.
Gatlin is no stranger to football; he just hasn’t played in a while. The last time he played was in high school. Gatlin has said that catching the ball isn’t a problem, he doesn’t drop balls. It is obvious that Gatlin has the speed for the NFL; in 2004 he won the gold medal in the 100-meter. Recently, in a workout in Houston he ran a 4.1 second 40-yard dash. While Gatlin is testing his hand as a wide receiver in mini-camp, his most likely position if he makes a team will be returning kicks.
Gatlin has the perfect agent for helping him find a place in this league. Renaldo Nehem Read more:Olympic

It’s Not Steve Foley’s Fault 2007-05-06 14:26:36 Steve Foley
might never play football again. He was shot last summer during an altercation with an off-duty police officer. The officer began following Foley in the southern part of San Diego on suspicion that Foley was driving under the influence. This off-duty cop followed Foley, in his civilian vehicle, to a neighborhood about 25 minutes away from where the cop began following Foley. When Foley exited the freeway he realized someone was following him. He stopped the car on the side of the road and exchanged words with the officer. Foley and the officer then got back in their cars and continued driving, where they eventually met in cul-de-sac not far from Foley’s

Stop for a second and put yourself in Foley’s shoes, he has realized that he has been followed off of the highway and now into his neighborhood at 3 a.m. by a man whom he doesn’t know.
