Foods classified to help kids eat right 2007-04-26 03:16:13 I think this is fabulous and exactly what needs to be done:
A new Institute of Medicine report, prepared by a panel of food and nutrition experts, outlines what schools should offer in vending machines, stores, a la carte lines and at fundraising events. The report divides foods into two tiers:
• Tier 1 products
could be offered to all school children in elementary through high school during the regular school day and after-school activities.
Foods
should provide at least one serving of a fruit, vegetable, whole grain or non-fat or low-fat dairy product. Foods should contain no more than 35% of total calories from fat, no trans fat and no more than 35% of calories from total sugars. Snacks would contain no more than 200 calories per packaged portion.
Some foods that meet the criteria: Apples, fruit cups, raisins, dried fruit, baby carrots, whole-grain low-sugar cereals, some multi-grain tortilla chips, some granola bars, non-fat, low-fat yogurt with no more than 30 grams of a

A little history on Baby Talkers 2007-04-23 04:12:33 As my son’s second birthday gets closer, I realize that so does the second birthday of the Baby Talker’s blog. It was born just a couple of weeks before Jax. The very first post on the Baby Talker’s blog was written by my husband on June 11, 2oo5. I thought I would take a little
trip down memory lane by looking back in the archives.
I remember having so many questions about everything! One of my major concerns was what the “must-have” items were. To make it easier for other moms-to-be, I made a New Parents’ Checklist of Baby Essentials. Of course not every item is a necessity, but it will give you a good start and might remind you of some things you have forgotten.
At 37 weeks pregnant, I packed my hospital bag. At 38 weeks, I had my membranes stripped. A week later at 39 weeks, 1 day I was induced and our son was born on June 29, 2005.
I took a bit of a hiatus from posting and came back in September with a few posts about sleep deprivation, clogged Read more:Talkers
Friday Fifteen: things I want to buy for my son’s birthday 2007-04-20 14:46:39
When it comes to buying things
for my son, I am nuts. I am always finding things that I want to get for him. His second birthday is coming up soon and this is MY wish list for him. ha!
1. A train table. (still researching which one to get, I just thought this one looked good, but am totally up for suggestions!!!)
2. Elmo TMX. What can I say? My son loves it. 3 of his friends have it and when we go to their houses, he picks up the Elmo and hugs it saying “awww baybeee”.
3. The Little Tikes double easel - Art is a big part of my life and always has been. I can’t wait for my mom to start giving J “lessons”.
4. A tool bench. I can’t help it - it’s sooo cute! I guess I’m also hoping he’ll be able to help around the house one day soon. We sure could use it. HAHAHA!
5. Giant building blocks. My brother and I had these as kids and I remember building forts and having the best time with these things. I recently bought a small set (about 1 Read more:Friday

Weaning from the pacifier 2007-04-18 15:37:41 This is actually a subject I never really worried about. I was the person who refused to give my son a pacifier before he was born. However, the nurses at the hospital felt differently and gave him one. You may ask where was I? Why didn’t I object? I honestly don’t remember and he was with me the entire time! Hmmm…..
Anyway, it happened and he seemed so content with it that DH and I decided to let him use them. Our son was a big sucker…..needing to breast feed every 2 hours around the clock until he was almost 11 months old, having a paci in his mouth the rest of the time (not literally, but almost). He needed the pacifier to sleep for naps and at bedtime and when he was having a melt down in the car. It was his “security blanket”.
I did not have a time frame in mind for when I wanted him to stop using it because it made him happy and was fulfilling an obvious need of his. I figured when he was “too old” for it, one of us would realiz
Beaming with pride! 2007-04-18 15:19:19 I am SUCH a proud mama and there are times that I just want to shout it from the roof top. Now is one of those times! There is no particular reason. I’m just sitting here doing my usual morning laptop routine, getting lost in what I’m doing and I look up to see my son concentrating with his stacking cups. He’s just standing there right across from me, keeping himself busy and having a grand ole time playing by himself. He is stacking the cups in perfect order inside one another. Then he takes them out, one by one and builds a tower. He catches me watching, says with huge excitement “tower” and knocks it down, all the while gleefully laughing. It is so cute and I literally just beamed with pride.

That would be Mommy! 2007-04-16 05:06:24 For the longest time I craved to hear the words “mama” come from my little one’s mouth. I knew he knew who I was. The kid was attached to my boob 24/7 for a year and to my hip since then. He is my little postage stamp and when anyone would ask him where or who’s mama - he would look at me, smile real big, point and giggle. Yep, he knows me. Month after month, slowly but surely his vocabulary was growing, but still no name for me.
Until finally…..my son must have heard me talking and telling anyone that would listen how badly I wanted to hear the word, because he did it. He said “mama”. Then he wouldn’t stop. All day long, “mama, mama, mama”. Suddenly I was the 65 year-old cranky lady from that old tv show. If you knew me, the name just doesn’t fit.
I always refer to myself as “mommy”. My husband, my parents, my friends…everyone refers to me to my son as “mommy”. I swear he heard me talking Read more:Mommy

Crazy toddler requests, someone please shoot me! 2007-04-13 14:45:36 I guess those of you who have been through this already are saying to yourself with a smile, “Welcome to Toddlerhood”. Woah. It is enough to drive the sanest person bonkers.
My son is obsessed with having blue cheese….and no, I don’t mean the blue cheese that normal people eat. I mean, blue COLORED cheese. There is no such thing, yet he insists there is and he wants it. NOW!
Try explaining that to a hard-headed toddler
. Then I ask if he wants a blue spoon and he says yes. That satisfies him for all of 3 seconds. Then he wants “two”. Good thing I have an extra. 1 second later, they are both on the floor.
“Hey kiddo, do you want a blue cup?” He wants the blue cup with Elmo, but it’s empty and when I give it to him, he tries to drink air. So I fill it with water, but that’s not cool. He dumps the water.
Now he wants a banana. We don’t have any, sorry. I have dried bananas, which the little man usually inhales. Nope, not go Read more:Crazy
Fifteen things that remind me of childhood… 2007-04-27 19:28:43 Fifteen things
that remind me of childhood:
1. my little pony - how pretty were they?!?! omg, I loved these things. I was obsessed with brushing their hair.
2. cabbage patch kids - my first one looked like a mini version of myself, of course, since it was my baby! Her name was Cora and she had the cutest brown pigtails, big brown eyes and pudgy cheeks. I eventually got a boy, a preemie, and one of those animals, but I can’t remember what they were called. Anyone?
3. garbage pail kids - the girl’s version of baseball cards?
4. strawberry shortcake - I also really liked blueberry muffin. I think she was my favorite.
5. building forts - my brother and I had such a blast doing this with our dad’s help. climbing and jumping all over the place. ahhh the memories.
6. bike rides - yes, I had a little pink huffy with a flower basket. wish I had a picture!!
7. tea parties - I was a great host. I had a little table and chair set in my room (and a high chair too) that I would pu Read more:Fifteen
Are Moms Appreciated Enough? 2007-05-02 13:35:49 I always hear people say that being a mom is the toughest, yet most rewarding job in the world. For me it is definitely tough at times and definitely rewarding beyond my wildest dreams. The looks of admiration, support, and love I get from my son are priceless. The pride he exhibits when he’s done something, anything, is precious. The hugs and kisses and other signs of affection he shows are the best things in the world. Taking care of him and teaching him gives me a greater purpose than I’ve ever known. I just hope that when he grows up, he remembers on some level all that he’s been given. I don’t feel like I’ve sacrificed much, although as parents, we all make sacrifices, and I don’t expect anything in return. I just hope that he always knows how much I love him and that he appreciates it.
I have always really appreciated my mom. Obviously as a mother now myself, I understand her more and understand where she’s been coming from all these yea Read more:Enough

Fifteen random things about me 2007-05-04 14:34:16 1. I’m in a book club. Once a month, a group of us get together at someone’s house for food and drinks and some book discussion. I don’t always read the books because I don’t really go for the books. I just need the break! This month we are reading Wife in the Fast Lane and I plan to read it.
2. I love pedicures. I had to take my mom to the eye doctor the other day. On the way home, my son fell asleep in the car. I dropped my mom off at her house and carried my sleeping boy in to her house too. I ran out to get a pedicure.
3. I suck at food shopping. Going to the grocery store is a chore for me, yet I find myself planning when I have to go. It gets me out of the house sometimes and once I’m there I guess I don’t mind it so much. I hardly ever go with a list. My husband complains that I don’t buy anything he likes, but he doesn’t give me any suggestions. There are lots of snacks in our house!!!

Product Review: Peg Perego Highchair 2007-05-05 20:14:07 We have the Peg Perego Prima Pappa highchair for our son. It was recommended by a friend and got rave reviews from various moms I spoke to while pregnant. It looked very nice so I figured it was a good idea.
I liked that it could double as a “rocker” for baby and that it had various heights that we could adjust as necessary. We never did use it as a rocking chair, but we did adjust the height. As my son got older, we lowered the chair. Now it is in the lowest position and goes right up to the table. We often use it without the tray.
At almost 2 years old, my son still likes sitting in it. I’d say that is the best thing about the chair. It’s comfortable. The worst thing about the chair is that it’s horrendous to clean. It gets filthy and has a million nooks and crannies which are impossible to get into. You have to use a wrench and screwdriver to undo the straps, take off the cushion, take the chair outside and hose it down with a power hose in order to
Is this weird, or is it me? 2007-05-05 17:39:12 1. Two men dressed in army fatigues, complete with combat boots, dog tags, and crew cuts. Instead of carrying bazookas, they are carrying giant tubs of bazooka joe gum. They are walking down the middle section of a major roadway.
2. A pretty beat up van with a sign on it reading, “looking for quality drivers”.
3. A man dressed in all black: pants, boots, shirt, trench coat, hat, holding a black umbrella and a black rolling suitcase. It was 92 degrees F out.
4. A jeep with no windows, but a car seat in the backseat.
This was all within a 15 minute drive home from a play date at my friend’s house on Friday.

Happy belated Mother's Day! 2007-05-14 20:11:03 I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day and that the fantastic job you do every day was acknowledged with the appreciation you deserve!
I am proud to say that I had a beautiful day spent with my loving family.
I was tagged by two of my blogging friends, Sinead and Andi to take some time and answer some questions on how I’d like to take better care of myself. Here goes:
Set aside some time during which you can relax and reflect. Sit in a comfortable spot. Try not to think too much about your answers. Once you’ve answered, you’ll have a better idea of what you need to thrive. Ask yourself:

No! 2007-05-22 01:37:46 My son is at the age/stage where he is really wanting to show his independence. If I say yes, he says no. If I say anything really, he says no. It’s his new favorite word…..and it is driving me crazy.

Favorite characters 2007-05-21 16:04:29 My son really loves characters. He can name every single dude on Sesame Street, while having a new favorite every couple of days. He gets excited to see Dora and Diego and let’s not forget Boots. He believes the Backyardigans are his friends and can name all of the different trains from Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. My boy is just enthralled by them all.
Don’t get the wrong idea. My kid is not glued to the TV at all times. He became familiarized with the characters from books long before he watched them on television. I am totally not a brand cautious person, I’m not into having a Thomas train versus a no-name train. It makes no difference to me. Either one will work. However, my son has a thing for “characters”. He loves anything with wheels, but show him a regular car or one of the Cars from the movie CARS, and no question he’ll go for the Disney one.
I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that these characters are given personalities Read more:Favorite
Realizing my baby isn’t such a baby anymore… 2007-05-19 16:33:30 At almost 23 months, I’m realizing my baby boy isn’t so much a baby anymore. I mean, he’s still my baby, but he resembles a young boy much more than a baby these days. He knows that giving me a kiss will most likely get him what he wants. He deliberately tries to act funny in many different ways, whether it be fake sleeping or blaming his farts on someone else. Yes, he actually blames his farts on someone else and we have no idea where he learned this…..honestly. He asks for what he wants and blatantly tells us what he doesn’t want. He runs and jumps and expresses different emotions, actually knowing what those emotions are. He knows his friends and asks to see them. He points out things to us that we are truly shocked and amazed he knows. This kid has an amazing memory and sense of humor and temper!!! Yep, that’s my boy.

Sharing 2007-05-23 21:26:13 We are having a real issue with sharing lately. My son is super possessive and while we are all possessive of our belongings and rightfully so, he needs to learn that he has to share his toys with his little friends when they come over to play. I try to explain to him when he goes to “so and so’s” house that they let him play with their toys so he must do the same when they come over to play at our house. Instead of constantly saying “no” to him, I have tried saying “it’s ok - you have another one here” and passing him another toy. If it is a favorite toy of his, I will ask him to find a different toy for his friend to play with and then he can have his special toy back. I tell him that we are going to take turns. That first “so and so” will play with it for a little while and then Jax can have it. I have told him to be gentle (because he tends to grab his toys a bit aggressively as of late) or “it’s not nice not t Read more:Sharing

Appalling sight of the day 2007-05-25 05:55:42 So yesterday we’re driving to our “mommy and me”-type class and Jax and I take notice of this really cool car next to us because it looks like Flo from the Disney Pixar movie CARS. If you’ve been around for more than 5 minutes, you probably already know that my son is obsessed with this movie and all of the characters because I’m sure I’ve mentioned it…..oh maybe a few times. Anyway, so we’re driving next to this car that looks like Flo except it’s darker green and in much worse condition. It’s pretty banged up and has grateful dead stickers all over the back. I notice there’s a kid in the front seat. It totally reminds me of the discussion we just had here about what age everyone will let their child sit up front. Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out how old this kid is and trying to think back about how old I was when I was allowed and the car goes in front of us……and keeps driving in the direction
Graphic Portraits - don’t you wish you had one too? 2007-05-30 06:28:36
We received a very cool gift recently. It is a huge framed picture for our wall handmade by a very talented artist. (click on thumbnail for larger view) We’ve hung it in the playroom and it looks amazing.
I guess they are called graphic portraits….and can be used for almost any application: t-shirts, art work, wallpaper, mouse pads, cards/stationary/business cards, etc.
You send in the photograph(s) of your choice and there is a set fee for creating the actual image. Then an additional charge depending on how you use it. You can do more than one photo per application too. For example, if you did four squares, each one could be a different person or pet if you prefer. ;) For more information contact gwegweiser at gmail dot com (written as a normal email address of course). Tell him you saw his picture of ‘Jax’ at Baby Talkers.
