Let’s hear the good, the bad and the ugly! What are your favorite and least favorite parts of pregnancy? What are some things that no one told you, that you wish you knew ahead of time? Going out with Kids
2007-12-03 06:56:44
As many of you know, my husband and I have traveled quite extensively with our child. It’s not that we pick up and go every month, but we have traveled quite far and for long amounts of time with him. We also have always taken him out with us almost everywhere. He is now two and a half and this seems to be the last time we will be going on any vacation with him for a while. It is a very hard age to travel with, in my opinion. It’s a very hard age, period. I will have to post more later, but I just wanted to start off the conversation. What are some things you do to keep your kids and yourself sane while going out? It doesn’t have to be traveling, but even just going to a restaurant or the grocery store. Any funny or embarrassing stories to share? Mommy Talk, Topic of the WeekMommy Talk, Topic of the Week

TOTW: dealing with the loss of a pet
2007-12-10 11:02:22
Sadly, we recently lost our family pet, our sweet kitty. I got her shortly before my husband and I started dating when we were in college, which was about 12 years ago. She’s been with us for a long time and through many moves. From my first apartment in college to my first shared apartment with DH to my parents house and a couple more apartments and finally our current home. I am so used to having her around and seeing her in her little spots that she would find around the house. To make it even worse, we were not home when our cat passed. We were on vacation and she was home with my brother-in-law. He called me to tell me that she was not doing well and had stopped eating. I had my parents go assess the situation and speak to the vet and we all decided that it was her time to go. My parents took her to the vet to be put to sleep. I will feel guilty about that for a long time, but it is what it is. There was nothing I could have done. I just feel so sad that I couldn’t sa

Did that really just happen?
2007-12-06 17:00:41
So, we are in NYC, staying in my aunt and uncle’s apartment on the 18th floor. We’ve been here for about 2 weeks so my son, 2.5 years old, is pretty familiar with the building and the elevator and the doormen (thank God there is a doorman and you will know why in a minute). After a long day of walking around the city and a pit stop at FAO Schwartz (aka one of the coolest toy stores ever), we stopped for lunch at a restaurant near the apartment. We walked straight home because it was freezing. I decided to run back out for a minute to grab a coffee. I told my husband, who had started doing some work, that I was leaving. He was in a different room than my son, who was playing with the dogs and talking to my aunt’s cleaning lady. I told her that I was leaving too and said I’d be right back. Of course I assumed that either my husband or her, or both really, would keep an eye out for my son. I literally was gone for 5 minutes. The coffee joint is downstairs and acro

Fifteen Funny Things….
2007-12-21 07:57:28
Fifteen funny things my son has said in the past few days. Although I guess you kind of have to be there to hear his cute little voice and see the enthusiasm he has and the gestures he often uses. Anyway, here goes: 1. Oh, this couch is so comperbal (while testing out the couches at IKEA) 2. Don’t bug me (while taking a poop) 3. No thanks (after I ask if he wants to go take a bath) 4. I am soooooo tall 5. Just somefing else (after he’s done eating and wanting more) 6. Fank you! (thank you) 7 . I love you too, mom! (when giving me a hug - even if I had not just said I love you. lol) 8. I want your belly. (when he’s tired) 9. My kitty is with her mommy and daddy and all the other cats (when talking about our cat that recently died) 10. I’m going to Thailand (when I asked him if he knew where he was going today. We are going to gymnastics class, btw!) 11. I’m just playing 12. This is so cool (about a new toy he got yesterday) 13. That’s not nice (

Potty Progress
2007-12-20 10:52:01
When my son was 16 months old, I bought a small potty for him and put it in the bathroom so that he’d get familiar with it. I had no expectations, I just wanted him to know what the potty was used for. He did get very familiar with it and has known exactly what it is for quite a while now. It doesn’t mean he wants to use it, but he knows what it is there for. Throughout the past year, my son has been showing increasing signs of readiness and has gone in the potty several times. Each time he is very proud of himself and I think that he is going to continue, but it hasn’t worked out that way. Recently he started showing more signs of potty training readiness, such as asking me to change his diaper and telling me when he has gone. Here is a full checklist if you are interested in checking whether your child is ready or not. My plan is to be a little bit more aggressive in helping him get potty trained. I just ordered a new potty seat for downstairs so that they are acce

TOTW: Your Kids and Dating
2007-12-26 07:22:28
As all of us who are parents know, our little ones grow up right before our eyes……and it happens fast. One day they are getting their first teeth, next thing we know they want to be going on their first date. So, what age will you let your child start dating? Does it make a difference what gender they are? How about as kids - do you think it is ok for young kids to say they have a “girlfriend” or “boyfriend”. What sets this special friend aside from their other friends? If they are just best friends, would you encourage your child to just call the friend their best friend instead of their girlfriend or boyfriend? How do you feel about boy/girl sleepovers? What age do they stop? I know, lots of questions……but we haven’t had a topic of the week in a while and I wanted to kick it off. Please feel free to add your own questions. Getting Daddy Involved in Your Pregnancy
2008-03-06 14:44:53
I am midway through week 14 of my pregnancy and I am finally feeling good! Sometimes I forget I am even pregnant, but then I look down and see the noticeable belly bump that has already formed. My husband laughed at me yesterday when he noticed I was wearing maternity jeans. He said “pregnant jeans [...]

Gender Prediction Tests
2008-03-03 16:24:18
I recently received the Intelligender Gender Prediction Test in the mail. It is a simple urine test that apparently detects with 90% accuracy the gender of your baby as early as 10 weeks pregnant. I took the first test probably a few days shy of 10 weeks and the results were a bit ambiguous. [...]

More Harmful Side Effects to Spanking
2008-03-01 08:10:16
Another study has come out that spanking has harmful side effects. I am just going to paste the whole thing here. (emphasis mine) Researchers have uncovered another damaging consequence of spanking: risky sexual behaviors, or even sexual deviancy, when the child grows up. “This adds one more harmful side effect to spanking,” said Murray Straus, a spanking [...]

Things To Avoid During Pregnancy That You Do Anyway
2008-02-29 09:30:39
Last night I had a girl’s night out. It was one of my best friend’s birthday and a group of us went out for Asian cuisine. Looking at the menu ahead of time, I was not too happy because I am still so turned off by most food. Normally I love Thai food or sushi [...]

Pregnancy 13 weeks
2008-02-26 11:39:59
Today I had an unexpected visit to my OB. I had an appointment set for next week, but I was concerned that I had a bladder infection and didn’t want to wait so I switched it to today! Well, the test came out negative for a UTI, but they are going to culture it longer [...]

Insomnia, Vomit and Constant Urination
2008-02-19 14:55:22
Sounds like a party, right? Fortunately my one and only barfarama was yesterday morning, the day I hit 12 weeks pregnant. The funny thing is that I felt totally fine and didn’t see it coming at all. I just got blasted by a really nasty smell (old diapers sitting in the garbage can - ugh!!) [...]

Picking the Perfect Name for New Baby
2008-03-14 13:10:03
Picking your baby’s name can be an almost impossible task. For some prospective parents, it’s an emotional and logistical nightmare. You want to honor your great Uncle Dilbert but still protect your kid from years of playground torment. Your husband wants a name that evokes his Greek heritage (think: Anastasius), while you’re finding inspiration in [...]

First Fetal Movements
2008-03-12 16:57:30
For the past few nights, I am pretty sure that I have felt teeny tiny little baby movements. I wouldn’t exactly call them kicks, but there is some tapping, movement, swimming, flipping, fluttering….whatever you want to call it…..going on in there. It is so light and only happens late at night when I’m laying in [...]

When to Announce Your Pregnancy
2008-03-19 15:11:27
You’re pregnant! Congratulations! You are probably experiencing a flurry of emotions and questions. Among them: when to share your good news? My first time around, I was a bit more cautious and waited until about 10 weeks to tell most people. Close family knew right away and I waited until after my [...]

No Dinner For You!
2008-03-27 23:01:48
I sent my son to bed without dinner tonight. I know that sounds awful. But here is the situation. He has become such a finicky eater. I know it’s normal for his age, but it frightens me. I am scared to cater to his pickiness too much. I do not want to be the mom [...]

Pregnant Man
2008-04-03 15:32:57
I’m sure you’ve all heard about the pregnant “man”. He was on Oprah today. I didn’t see it, but I read the story. I’m pretty torn because I have no moral issue calling a he a “she” or a she a “he” if that is what they choose to live their life as, having had [...]

Pregnancy Cravings and Aversions
2008-04-07 11:45:10
Pregnancy is a funny thing. It can make you disgusted by things you used to love and it can make you drool over things you previously hated. Fortunately, from my experience, the aversions usually aren’t so bad after the first trimester. In my first pregnancy, I was turned off by chicken, turkey, and fish. In [...]

Pregnancy Workouts
2008-04-09 09:33:34
Exercise is important. That’s a no brainer. During pregnancy, exercise not only keeps your body toned and healthy, but will also increase blood flow, help fight fatigue and prepare your body for the exertion of delivery. I did not exercise regularly during my last pregnancy, although I did make a point to go on a [...]

The Miracle Blanket
2008-04-14 13:24:09
My son, Jax, has never been a wonderful sleeper. For most of his first year, he ate every 2-3 hours around the clock. This meant very little sleep for both of us. Naps were a joke. Ten minute power naps here or there. It was tough. I have many friends with great sleepers and they [...]
