How to get your kids to eat their veggies 2007-09-10 11:49:47 If you are like most moms, at some point you have been faced with the problem of your child not liking or wanting to eat vegetables.
My son goes through stages. At one point, he loved broccoli. He would eat an entire plate of steamed broccoli for dinner. Now he won’t touch it. His new thing is tomatoes, which he hated a few weeks ago. Instead of arguing with him about this, I just keep offering different vegetables and he can choose whether or not he wants to eat them. However, I don’t want him to go without eating any , so I have to disguise them. One of the ways I do this is by making a vegetable quiche.
Hopefully this recipe may help your child too.

BROCCOLI QUICHE
Ingredients:
Prepared Pie Crust
4 eggs, beaten
2 Tablespoons finely chopped onions
1/2 teaspoon thyme leaves
3 ounces shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup half & half or milk
1/2 cup fresh broccoli or frozen broccoli
3 ounces shredded Monterey Jack
TOTW: Your Child’s Opinion 2007-09-09 17:12:19 This week’s topic of the week (TOTW) is going to be about our children’s opinions and how much we think their opinions should count in regards to what they wear, what they eat, what they do, etc. We all know that kids go through phases. One week they may only want to eat broccoli and the next week they hate broccoli and only want to eat pretzels. They might want to wear a purple shirt with green pants and yellow rain boots to school. Does it matter to you?
Personally it is very important to me for my child to have as much control over his life as reasonable and possible. If he wants to wear an orange shark shirt with non-matching blue and green shark shorts and striped caterpillar rain boots out in public, of course I will let him. And yes, that was an actual outfit my son wore to Target and the grocery store one day. It was very cute, I might add.
As far as eating, I do not believe in forcing him to eat anything he does not want to eat. I won’t feed him ice cream
Britney loses her kids 2007-10-01 13:51:27 Britney
Spears has just lost custody of her children, Sean Preston (2) and Jayden James (1). Ex Kevin Federline will be granted custody until further notice of the Court.
This is so sad! I don’t care how much anyone dislikes her - for a mother to lose her children she must really be in serious trouble. Their dad is no prize either. Those poor kids.

TOTW: Pets 2007-09-30 19:30:58 We had a great discussion last week on germs. Towards the end of the thread, we got started talking about pets and their cleanliness or lack there of. I’d like this week’s topic to be about pets!
Do you have them?
What type of or how much interaction do they have with your child(ren)?
How do you feel about licking on the mouth?
Small scratches and/or bites?
Sleeping in the same bed with you or your child(ren)?
How do you feel about other people’s pets getting near your child(ren)
I know that is a lot of questions, I just hope that they will spark some discussion.
Last, but certainly not least…….a very sensitive topic, which I anticipate will be something I have to deal with sooner than later, is the death of a pet. How do you explain that to a young child?
My son is so attached to our cat. I think he will be devastated when she is no longer with us and I have no idea how to approach the subject. Do I bring it up ahead of time or wait until she is clo

You know you are a mom when……… 2007-09-28 13:26:41 This week for my Friday Fifteen, I am attempting some humor about motherhood in hopes that most of you can relate. They don’t all apply, all the time, but there’s definitely some truth here. Hope you enjoy….and please feel free to add your own!!!
You know you are a mom when………
1. You know the theme song to at least three kid shows by heart.
2. Not only do you know the theme songs, but you know all the characters’ names. (and if you don’t know the exact time each show is on, your TiVo tapes them anyway)
3. You go to Target for all your shopping needs.
4. You carry a gazillion baby wipes everywhere you go, but you forget your sunglasses most of the time.
5. Your car CD player has at least one CD of songs that would drive most adults insane, but you happily sing along to every song.
6. On the rare occasion you are in your car by yourself, you keep checking your rear view mirror and are surprised when the car seat is empty.
7. You never l
Cool find of the day: baby strap 2007-09-27 13:40:29
That’s my baby boy at 11 months old. That was in our hotel room in Tokyo, Japan, while we were enjoying breakfast. There was no high chair and no booster seat and although I could have easily put him on my lap, it was a lot easier (and fun for all of us!) for him to be in his own chair.
Most of the restaurants we went to while there, did not have high chairs. The ones that did, did not have a waist strap. Needless to say, the waist straps they sold separately in department stores were a big hit. We saw them everywhere, being used by everyone with a baby.
That was probably our first purchase in Japan, since we realized right away it was going to be pretty hard to eat out with our son otherwise.
And a great purchase it was. We got a ton of use out of it. Since basically all it is, is a thin fabric belt, it was so easy to carry around in my purse or diaper bag.
We’ve used it quite a bit at home when our son was younger too and pretty much bring it with us everywhere we trave
Natural Fertility Boosters 2007-10-12 08:08:22 Although these are all natural fertility boosters, please check with your doctor before trying any herbal supplements or beginning an exercise routine.
1. Stop smoking - Smoking damages eggs, reducing the chances of getting pregnant during any given cycle, and smokers may hit menopause several years earlier than their non-smoking peers. Smoking also negatively impacts hormone levels, further reducing fertility.
2. Limit caffeine consumption - Several studies have shown reduced fertility for women who consume more than 300 mg of caffeine each day. Fortunately, the threshold is high enough that you can still indulge in that morning cup o’ joe, since the average 8-ounce cup of coffee only has 100 to 130 mg of caffeine. Don’t forget, though, that black tea, green tea, chocolate, and some sodas also contain caffeine.
3. Get to a healthy weight - Obesity can inhibit ovulation and wreak havoc with hormones. It also puts women at risk for a variety of health problems (such as diabetes, hea Read more:Natural

Jon and Kate, plus 8 2007-10-10 11:33:33 Does everyone know about the Gosselin family? If not, please read their story so we can discuss. They have a show, actually I think they have several shows, on the Discovery Health Channel and TLC. In a nutshell, this couple Jon and Kate, have a set of twins (2 girls, 7 years old) and a set of sextuplets (3 boys, 3 girls, 3 years old), making that eight kids. My husband and I are totally intrigued by this family and love watching them to see how they get things done. They’ve got quite an operation running. The mom is totally organized and systematic. The dad is the most helpful dude on the planet. Their kids are so adorable. I mean, totally, utterly, the cutest little things ever! I am obsessed with them. Ok, not literally, but I do love to see them because they are just so durn cute.
All of the kids were conceived using fertility treatments. During Kate’s pregnancy, when they found out there were so many multiples, the doctor offered to do reduction. This is where they ran
Teddy Bears for Awareness 2007-10-10 06:05:18
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness
month, as my cool find this week, I wanted to find something that would help the cause. I was looking particularly for something kids would like and I found this pink bear wearing the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon. I think it’s an important lesson to teach kids what this pink ribbon they probably see all over the place, means.
Like I said in my earlier post, Pink for October, a family member of mine was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer so it hits especially close to home this year, and I want to do everything I can to support her and others just like her.
A portion of the profits from the original sale of this Beanie Baby will aid in the fight against breast cancer.

Pink for October 2007-10-07 13:16:32 As I’m sure you all know, October
is Breast Cancer Awareness month. It hits especially close to home this year as one of my close family members was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s becoming so common that it’s scary. Well, it’s always been scary, but the reality that someone we know will develop breast cancer in their lifetime is very real. The statistics say 1 in 8 women will get it. Basically this means we will all be affected by it, whether it be ourselves, a friend or family member who are actually diagnosed.
What does this mean for all of us? It means that we have to be aware. There are certain things you can do to decrease your chances of developing breast cancer. Keep your doctor’s appointments, stay in shape by exercising and eating well and give yourself a monthly breast exam. However, one thing some of you may not know is that you don’t have to have a lump to have breast cancer.
I want to share with you a story of a mom in the blogo
Mommy Tattoos 2007-10-06 07:14:55 Mommies getting tattoos to honor their children is becoming a new trend. These days, stretch marks are no longer the only permanent reminder of birth. Mothers are increasingly going under the needle and getting inked with their children’s names.
According to the website, MommyTattoos
, you need to know the following before making your mark!
*Moms need to wait until they have weaned before getting a tattoo. Getting a tattoo at a reputable & licensed tattoo shop is pretty safe, but why take the chance of an infection that you could pass along to your baby?
* Find a reputable and licensed tattoo shop in your area. Ask questions, do some research and make sure you feel comfortable with their staff. If you feel even a slight uneasiness, then walk out and don’t look back.
* Be aware of the “rules” that all reputable & licensed tattoo shops abide by. Tattoo shops should have a working autoclave, which sterilizes reusable equipment. Tattoo artists have to wear l

Have Fun Indoors with Your Child 2007-10-02 12:30:01 I don’t know how the weather is where you are, but it has been raining every day for the past few weeks around here. Being stuck in the house can definitely get boring, especially for a child that needs stimulation. Here are some fun activities that you can safely do indoors with your kids.
1. Turn your house into a home theater. Rent a video from the video store or borrow one from the library, make popcorn, invite friends and hand out tickets to make for a special event.
2. Make a picture story. Take turns drawing different things on a piece of paper. After drawing each item, explain what it is and why it is part of the picture.
3. Using a sofa for cover and a bunch of handmade puppets, you, your children and their friends can write and produce an enjoyable puppet show.
4. Make an indoor bowling alley. Stack a collection of toilet paper rolls as bowling pins and use a small ball as the bowling ball.
5. Use a giant piece of paper and trace your child. When you are done tracing, h

Boy or Girl? You Choose!
By: Nancy Kunkel
I am a proud mother of two little girls, a nurse, and the owner of BoyGirlDiet.com. I specialize in fertility and reproductive nursing, specifically gender selection. Through my years of practice, it was my job to provide education and support to individuals, couples, and families regarding fertility, pregnancy, prenatal health and gender selection options.
When I started working in this field, I was pregnant with my second child. My husband and I already had a daughter and although we most importantly wanted to have a healthy baby, I always wondered what it would be like to have another girl. I’m best friends with my sister,and I couldn’t get it out of my mind that I wanted my daughter to have a sister too!
With the Boy and Girl Gender Diet Plans, gender no longer has to be left to “chance”, and now parents can choose what they want their next child to be. I always found gender selection an intriguing specialty and w Read more:Select

TOTW: ear piercing 2007-10-16 16:24:52 This week I’ve chosen the topic of piercing
children’s ears as our topic. How young is too young? Should you wait and allow them to decide for themselves? Is piercing ears only for girls or is it ok for boys too?
Personally I have no problem whatsoever with people who choose to pierce their young babies’ ears, but I wouldn’t do it. I think if I have a daughter, I’d like to wait until she expresses an interest and then we can make a big deal out of it and go get it done as a reward or just for being a big girl or something. I’d like for her to remember it (fondly, hopefully).
Now for my son, if he decides to pierce his ears, he can do it when he is old enough to make his own decisions, pay for it himself and care for his piercings. I just personally am not a fan of earrings on males. I think it is tacky. Having said that, my DH had his ear pierced when I met him (he was 20) and I liked it. Must be an age thing.
What do you think?

Mommy’s Secret Crush 2007-10-16 16:04:31 Ahhh, the secret mommy crush; it’s more common than you might think, or than some married moms might want to admit. We tend to link secret crushes with our innocent youth or adolescence. These early “puppy love” moments ultimately pave the way for our adult relationships, but crushes can happen to anyone, at any time, even to a happily married woman with kids. We’ll get into the reasons in a moment.
There’s often a mysterious quality about crushes. They tend to sneak up on a person with very little warning. They can come as easily as they can go. And here’s another little interesting tidbit about secret crushes: You can’t always pick who you have a crush on. Crushes produce that “Wow … what was that!?!” kind of feeling. The object of our crush is often someone who is a virtual stranger, someone you don’t really know that well (and probably don’t want to know that well, either). When the secret crush is a complete fantasy, these men can be anyone you want them to Read more:Mommy
Alternative Halloween Treats 2007-10-26 07:03:56 I don’t know about you, but as a kid I loved all the candy given out at Halloween
because it was one of the only times of the year that I got to indulge in so much sugar! However, now that I am a parent, I am not too fond of the whole idea. My son is only 2 so he definitely does not need all that candy. We are planning on going “trick or treating” at the mall where I am sure he will get way more sugar than an elephant could handle, but there will be no sweet give-a-ways at my house this year. For those of you who are looking for some alternative treats to hand out and are worried that the kids won’t like them, don’t fret. Here are fifteen goodies that I’m sure most kids would enjoy. Besides, they’ll be getting more than their share of candy at all the other houses.

2. Stickers
3. Mini bouncing balls
4. Awareness rubber bracelets (pink is perfect this month for Breast Cancer)
5. Play - doh

TOTW: Holidays 2007-10-22 12:12:17 With Thanksgiving coming up and the other holidays soon to follow, I figured a good topic for this week would be about the holidays. How do you balance time with your and your significant other’s family? Do you do things separately or all together as a big family? If you put up a tree and have young mobile children, how do you keep them out of the decorations? When do you start putting up decorations? What are some of your special family traditions around holiday time?
Please feel free to add your own questions, these are just to get you started!

Makeup, fishnets, and shaving, oh my! 2007-10-30 10:30:43 This week’s topic is going to be on makeup, shaving, nail polish, and certain fashion statements.
What age do you think is appropriate for your girls to start wearing makeup? Will they or are they allowed to play with makeup now for dress up games? What about your boys? Can they play with make up too?
How about nail polish? What age is appropriate to paint your kids’ nails and is it only ok for girls or can boys do it too?
When will you let your children start shaving? Is once they get unwanted hair a sufficient enough reason or do they have to be a certain age?
How about girls wearing thongs? And fishnets? There has been a bit of controversy lately about little girls wearing fishnet stockings as part of their Halloween costumes. Is that appropriate or are they just too young?
Should be an interesting discussion.

First Sleep Over 2007-10-28 09:41:22 My son is exactly 28 months old and he just had his very first sleep over away from Mommy and Daddy last night. I’ve been ready for a while but we were waiting until we were pretty sure our son would be ready. We had a party last night so we planned it out that J (DS) would sleep at my parents’ house. He spends a lot of time with them and loves being with them so I wasn’t worried about that. Last weekend he and I slept at their house for 2 nights because my husband was in the hospital, so I think that got him used to the idea as well.
My parents picked J up from our house last night to take him to dinner and he made a small fuss to go. Normally he is eager to leave with them, but I had told him he was sleeping there so he was a bit apprehensive. It took about 5 seconds for my dad to get him to laugh and all was fine. Turns out our son sleeps better at his grandparents’ house than he does out ours.
Meanwhile, I had a terrible night sleep. I was up every few h Read more:First

Tips for getting kids dressed 2007-11-02 06:30:23 Shoes on the Right Foot - Mark the side of each show facing inward to identify which shoe goes on which foot. Teach the child that when the marks face each other, the shoes are on properly.
Tied Shoelaces - Keep shoelaces tied by dampening them before tying.
Clothes on the Right Way - Mark the front of a shirt, dress, pants, or other item of clothing so your child can tell the front from back.
Keep Socks Together - When your child takes off his or her socks, make sure the child attaches the socks together with a rubber band, plastic clamp or laundry pin to avoid mismatched socks.
Don’t Lose Mittens - Put an end to lost single mittens by attaching the end of a long piece of yarn to each mitten and running the yarn through the inside of the coat and sleeves. Or just put each mitten in the corresponding side coat pocket.
Fisted Dressing - If your child won’t make a fist when you try to put his arm up a narrow sleeve, give him or her a small toy to hold on to so you can slip th
Cool find of the day: Planet Happy Toys 2007-10-31 10:24:45
I love this Dream Meadow Playmat & Changing Station from Haba. Look at all the little things that rustle, squeak and move about on the meadow. This soft play mat can be easily converted into a bed or diaper changer by flipping up the sides. The play gym bar allows little ones to discover even more by hanging different toys from the gym bar.

Cool find of the day: JacaLuca 2007-11-07 18:34:22 I know I am late in posting my cool find today, but our internet connection has been down all day so I haven’t had a chance to get online. Anyway, I have come across an adorable site called JacaLuca. I can definitely relate to why these two first time moms of baby boys started this company.
First and foremost, they felt that there was a major absence of cute and stylish boys clothes in the marketplace. They wanted to put together a unique, one of a kind line that would turn heads; something that they would love putting on their guys. They knew they had a hit when they would take their kids out to the malls and baby classes in their new creations and received compliments from everyone; even inquiries on where their shirts came from.
You must check out the original tie tee. It is adorable! All of their products are. They even have some girl clothes, but I must say the boy stuff is better…..which is unusual, right?!?

TOTW: Daylight Savings 2007-11-05 05:06:32
It’s Monday again, which means it’s time for a new topic of the week. Since yesterday was DaylightSavings
, I wanted to ask a couple of questions about that.
So, in the Fall, we go backwards, which essentially means our kids are going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. For me, the bedtime deal is great, but I am not the happiest camper in the morning. Instead of getting up between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., I am now being woken up at 6:30 a.m.
My son fell asleep at 8:30 last night, though, which is great. A whole other topic, but my husband and I went on a date last night. It was our 7th wedding anniversary so we got all dressed up, went for a fancy dinner (generously payed for by family members) and then to see a movie. We left our son with his grandparents and were figuring he’d pass out at some point before we got back, but were pleased to hear he went to bed at a normal hour. It made perfect sense, because he normally falls asleep sometime between 9:30 and 10. Yes, h Read more:Daylight Savings
TOTW: Division of Household Labor 2007-11-12 12:16:35 This week’s topic of the week is going to be about the division of household labor. I’m not sure if we’ve covered it here before and if we have, it’s been a while, so no harm in bringing it up again.
How’s the split in your house? Are there some chores that only one of you typically do? Are there some chores he expects you and only you to do? Are there some you expect only him to do? What about your children, if they are old enough to do chores?
When I was a kid, I remember my dad helping out a lot around the house. My brother and I always had set chores too, but they were pretty easy. I unloaded one shelf of the dishwasher, he did another. I set the table and we took turns collecting garbages around the house for garbage day. I’m sure he had some more to do, but I can’t remember.
Currently, my two year old son is too young for chores. He likes to “help” me around the house, but that’s a whole other topic. I admit I am far fro Read more:Division

Fifteen things I love about kids 2007-11-09 12:55:17
Kids - I just love them! Obviously I love mine with all my heart and soul, but I truly love all of my friends’ kids and I love watching them and learning from them. This week my Friday Fifteen
is a list of 15 things
I love about little kiddos.
I love:
their innocence;
their silliness;
their voices and the way they say things;
their imagination and creativity;
the way their eyes light up when they are amazed;
their amazement and wonder at so many new things;
the way they find joy in everything, even the most mundane things;
how they interact with each other;
the way they call for “mommy” when they are scared, hurt, tired, hungry, or just want some physical contact or attention;
how everyone and everything is their “friend”;
how quickly they can be distracted and forget about what was bothering them 5 seconds ago;
how smart they are;
their laughs and how much they actually love to laugh and have fun;
their little hands and feet and bellies and cheeks; and
