Baby Otter Swim Lessons 2007-05-29 08:46:00 I finally made the call.
In addition to the horrible statistics:
• Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in Florida.
• 75% of victims are ages 12 to 25 months old.
• 65% drown in the family pool.
• 33% drown in a neighbors’ or relatives’ pool.
• For every child that drowns, 4 are hospitalized for near drowning.
• 77% were missing less than 5 minutes.
I just want my baby to know how to save himself if he falls in the pool……and I want him to enjoy the water as much as I did as a kid. We live in Florida. That is what kids do here. They spend their days in the pools and at the beach.
Jax will be 2 in a month and we have taken him in our pool quite frequently, but we are not qualified to teach him survival skills. Lately he has gotten extremely bold and goes onto our first and second pool step by himself. He also thinks it’s funny to run around the pool. I am terrified of this. Not that he will ever be outside alone, but that Read more:Otter

A meme for me 2007-06-03 08:28:55 Nesting Momma tagged me to post 7 random things about myself. Thankfully it wasn’t 7 interesting things because I’m not sure I have too many of those.
1. When I was fifteen, I hitchhiked in La Jolla California so I could go to the Hard Rock Cafe. It was totally worth it.
2. When I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor, an artist, a ballerina, a zoo keeper and a mommy when I grew up.
3. I was a band groupie in college. My husband (then-boyfriend) was a musician in a band and I was at all of his shows lusting after him.
4. I’ve been to 19 countries outside of the USA: Bahamas, St. Lucia, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, England, Italy, France, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria, Canada, Israel, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, and I can’t think of the last so maybe it is only 18. I’ve been to a lot of US states too and would love to travel around the entire country in an RV for a year. My husband does also, so we’ll see. Maybe it will happen

The Inverse Power of Praise 2007-06-01 04:57:17 Since Thomas could walk, he has heard constantly that he’s smart. Not just from his parents but from any adult who has come in contact with this precocious child. When he applied to Anderson for kindergarten, his intelligence was statistically confirmed. The school is reserved for the top one percent of all applicants, and an IQ test is required. Thomas didn’t just score in the top one percent. He scored in the top one percent of the top one percent.
But as Thomas has progressed through school, this self-awareness that he’s smart hasn’t always translated into fearless confidence when attacking his schoolwork. In fact, Thomas’s father noticed just the opposite. “Thomas didn’t want to try things he wouldn’t be successful at,” his father says. “Some things came very quickly to him, but when they didn’t, he gave up almost immediately, concluding, ‘I’m not good at this.’ ” With no more than a glance, Thomas was dividing the world into two—things he was nat Read more:Inverse

Cycle Beads, the fashionista’s answer to an ovulation chart! 2007-05-31 10:45:36 The following article is written by contributing author Hannah Claire Shapiro of the column The Knocked Up Knockout
(full article can be seen there - this is just an excerpt):
So, I am beginning to ponder Baby 2.
Though I had no problems conceiving last time, there is no guaranteeing the same luck with Baby 2. You see, according to Victoria Jennings, Ph.D, Director of Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health, approximately 20% of women who do not become pregnant fail because they do not know when they are fertile.
Enter CycleBeads
, the fashionista’s answer
to an ovulation chart! This pretty, rosary-style, contraption (developed by Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health), enables a woman to easily identify her 12-day “fertile window”. The CycleBeads are ever so easy to use: you simply move a black ring over a series of color-coded beads that represent her fertile and low fertility days. The day a woman starts her period she puts the
No Maternity Insurance 2007-05-31 09:47:12 It is estimated that over 50% of all pregnant women are uninsured, and the cost of maternity health expenses can be staggering for those paying out of pocket. I am one of those people and I can attest to the huge bills we received when paying out of pocket for my pregnancy with my son. Most doctors and hospitals have a payment plan and discount for those without maternity coverage, but it is still quite pricey.

Who is this monster in my house? 2007-06-04 06:48:39 And where did he come from?
We seem to be hitting those “terrible twos” hardcore. Sorry, I am not one of those people who is going to sugar coat it and call it the “terrific twos” because that it ain’t. For those of you who never experienced this with your kids, I envy you. For those of you who have yet to experience it with your kids, I fear for your life. Since I know you are all loving and wonderful mothers and would never harm your children, I am warning you it takes a lot of patience and will power to keep from inflicting personal injury upon yourself just to make the pain of it all go away.
I’m lucky I’ve got my husband to remind me that “it’s only going to get worse” and that I’d “better figure out a way to control our child”. Oh goody!!!
And then……after about 3 excruciating minutes of horror, my precious, adorable, sweet and funny little toddler returns. God, I love him! It is so nice t
Lady, stop laughing, it’s so not funny 2007-06-03 20:29:50 Well yeah, I’m laughing too. But not because it’s funny, because it’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. Seriously. A hat to cover your boobs while breast feeding? Sheesh, the things people come up with to make a buck.
MoBoleez has coined this hat “the modern bonnet for breast feeding babies”. First of all, bonnets are anything but modern. Second of all, a hat to cover your boobs????
They make sure to get the message across that these hats are intended to “cover the breast, not the breastfeeding!”
The “stay on head sideways” design means that once the hat is on, it’ll stay on, and no more fussing with dropping blankets or awkward, bulky ‘nursing covers’. While the big brim gives mom a little privacy, it doesn’t cover up the breastfeeding, it celebrates it in a fun sort of way!
Alright, so their message is annoying kinda cute, but come on, a hat to cover up your boobs??? I’m not sur
Eat your apples 2007-06-03 19:08:13 Children of mothers who eat plenty of apples during pregnancy are less likely to develop asthma.
The University of Aberdeen project quizzed 2,000 mothers-to-be on their eating habits, then looked at their child’s health over five years.
They found that those who ate four or more apples a week were half as likely to have an asthmatic child compared with those who ate one or fewer.
The study was presented at the American Thoracic Society conference.

A day of reminiscence 2007-06-14 14:43:21 Thursday afternoons have become my “break”. My parents take my son for the afternoon so that I can get things done around the house without interruption. Today I realized, amongst the mountain of laundry I still have to do, that I needed to immerse myself in even more clothes. I decided that it was time to go through my son’s drawers and closet to put away all the little outfits he’s outgrown.
I have done this in the past, but didn’t organize it well and never labeled the boxes. So, today I unpacked his entire dresser, closet and previously packed away clothing and put things in piles. Each pile had a note that said either newborn, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-18 months, or *gasp* 18-24 months. I cannot believe my baby has already outgrown his 18-24 month things!!!!
I also cannot believe how much clothing the kid his. It’s insane! There were even some things that still had tags on, never worn. I told my husband that if we have a girl next time, she&rs
Unsolicited Advice 2007-06-16 11:24:13 We all get it, we all hate it. In fact, I’ve been hearing a new buzz word around the blogosphere recently, referring to it as assvice. Isn’t that great? It’s the obnoxious comments you get from strangers when you’re just going about your own business. It’s the well-meaning, but annoying just the same comments you get from your mother-in-law. You are not alone, I promise. I am going to share some tips that may help you deal with the situation. If you have any other tips, feel free to let us know. Even though these are all rational and mature responses, I’d love to hear some of your sarcastic and less than polite retorts as well.

Big Boy Bed 2007-06-20 20:41:58 So tonight is my baby’s first night in his “big boy bed”. The mattress arrived this morning. J didn’t notice a thing. He fell asleep on the couch this afternoon and I carried him up to my bed for his nap. Meanwhile, I washed the new mattress pad and made his bed up with his new animal sheets. After his afternoon snack, I prompted J upstairs by telling him I had a great surprise waiting for him in his room. Intrigued, he followed me and his eyes seriously lit up when he saw his bed. He was soooo excited, he screamed “yeeaaaaaaaaaah” with laughter and jumped on the mattress, inspecting every inch. He played on it for about an hour…..pretending to sleep……touching and naming all the animals…….playing “tim-ber”………jumping on the bed. I just can’t believe my baby is such a big boy!!

First-Born Jealousy 2007-06-27 08:50:59 By Elizabeth Pantley, Author of the No-Cry Sleep Solution and Gentle Baby Care
Question: Our first-born is showing extreme jealousy towards the new baby. He’s obviously mad at us for disrupting the predictable flow of his life with this new challenger for our attention. How can we smooth things out?
Think about it: Before the baby entered your family, your toddler was told he’d have a wonderful little brother to play with, and how much fun it would be. Then the little brother is born and your toddler is thinking, “Are you kidding me? This squirming, red-faced baby that takes up all your time and attention is supposed to be FUN?” He then “plays” with the baby in the only ways he knows how. He plays catch. You yell at him for throwing toys at the baby. He plays hide-and-seek. You yell at him to get the blanket off the baby. He gives the kid a hug, and you admonish him to be more careful. Is it any wonder that your toddler is confused?

The Baby Bug (TBB) is a niche social bookmarking and networking-type site for parents. If you are a website owner or blogger and write articles relating to parenthood and/or family life, you can submit, promote, bookmark and vote on your favorite blog entries and articles on TBB.
I found it very frustrating to find a category to post my articles on other news aggregation sites, such as Digg. We decided to fix this problem for all of the mommy and daddy bloggers out there and create a site just for us!
Other bloggers and website owners will see your links and visit your site if your content sounds good. Baby Soup 2007-07-03 09:05:00 This morning Jax and I went swimming. The weather is sketchy here in summertime, either rainy or super hot so on the mornings that it’s nice and clear out, you have to take advantage. So, we’re hanging out on the steps and J is inspecting me with intense curiosity. Finally he points to my swimsuit and says “baby soup”. That’s right Jax, it’s my bathing suit!

3. Genetic screening may endanger fetusus - Screening unborn children for genetic defects appears to reduce the chances of a healthy pregnancy and live birth.

Motherhood is a roller coaster ride 2007-07-09 06:52:37 As I’ve learned is normal with being a mom, we’ve been having some new issues lately. I decided to go searching through the forums for some information on the current subject, hitting, before starting a new thread. It was interesting to see all of the old topics I’ve started in the past. Lots of them are ancient history and seem like they only lasted a very short phase. It seems that everything with our little ones come in stages. It’s a constant guessing game. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. There are days that are amazing and I’m floating on air thinking I am the luckiest person in the world and there are days that I get so frustrated, I want to run away. I dream of vegging on the sand in front of the ocean, sipping on pina coladas…..alone!! Then I just look over at my baby and it vanishes. Those thoughts are gone in an instant. Motherhood

My Sister’s Keeper (very sad, but good read)
The Memory Keeper’s Daughter (another sad, but good read)
The History of Love (book club - loved it!)
Eat, Pray, Love (book club - our most recent book, very enjoyable)
