Hispanic Spotlight: Carmireli 2007-04-27 01:18:00 Carmireli is an up and coming pop start with a voice to match her desire to succeed in the pop world. Check the biography from her MySpace page and check out her website carmireli.com.The radiant Carmireli was born the youngest girl of eleven in Santurce, Puerto Rico, and celebrated her eighteenth birthday on July 21. Though originally from the island, most of her upbringing was in Queens, New York, where she became no stranger to the words " struggle" and "overcome." The family fell upon hard times and resided for eight years in a windowless, basement apartment before moving to upstate NY at the beck and call of one of her older brothers that had found a bit more fortune in this land of liberty. This anglicized has that "Bring it on" attitude. At the age of thirteen following her mother's dream, Carmireli began her theater, dance, and voice studies. Ironically, just a few words spoken by a voice teacher would become the beginning of her chrysalis. He said "You're just one of a thous Read more:Hispanic

Hispanics Mostly Catholic 2007-04-25 21:31:00 MSNBC has a story announcing what most Latinos already know, the majority of Hispanics
son catolicos. What's a little more surprising at least to me is that most evangelical Hispanics are almost split evenly in their political preferences. Republican evangelicals slightly outnumbering the democrats in their faith. The democrats though have an huge edge in the catholic faith."U.S. Hispanics view religious and political life as intertwined, often worship in ethnic congregations and embrace a spirit-filled, charismatic style of Christianity, a new survey says. The trends cross Roman Catholic
and Protestant lines and signal significant shifts in the U.S. religious landscape, considering the explosive growth of the Hispanic population, according to the survey released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Hispanic Center. When it comes to political loyalties, religion trumps ethnicity: Hispanic Catholics, who make up two-thirds of the Hispanic population, are

Puerto Rican in Israel gets arrested 2007-04-25 03:33:00 A Puerto
Rican activist, protesting against Israel
's West Bank separation wall, which they use as security, and which Palestine claims is a grab for land, was put under house arrest."De Jesus initially was arrested
after climbing a six-story surveillance tower alongside the separation barrier, near the West Bank town of Bilin. De Jesus stayed stayed on the tower for five hours and flew a large Palestinian flag, as part of a weekly protest by peace activists against the barrier.De Jesus, also known as Tito Kayak, is famous for leading protests against U.S. Navy exercises on Puerto Rico's Vieques Island.De Jesus said he felt good he'd revived media attention about the Israeli barrier, built mostly in the West Bank. "Maybe because of the media other people will know what's happening here in Palestine. Palestinians have the right to live like humans," he said in a telephone interview from his house arrest in Tel Aviv."
Taking Advantage of Our Own 2007-04-24 21:20:00 Rolando Montez, a resident of California, was convicted along with three associates of defrauding Latino home buyers of $1.2 million. He used their faith, and the fact that he was the pastor's brother in a local church, to trick them into believing he would get them a new home for an investment of $7,500. As if we don't have it hard enough to succeed as a community, here we have a classic example of someone taking advantage of peoples hopes and dreams. Here is a quote from the story in the North County Times of San Diego."Montez's First Latino operation eventually attracted investments of more than $1.2 million from more than 100 Latinos throughout North County. While the company did own property, it would never have been able to accommodate the number of homes promised. Even if it could have, the amounts being invested were too small to secure a parcel or build a house. In any event, the San Diego County district attorney's office tallies about $874,000 in investments still unacco Read more:Taking
