For the design of the OW1 stool, he adopted the idea of a single element – a felt sheet shaped like an obi (a simple, traditional Japanese belt worn with the kimono). He saw the potential in this simple rectangular object to be shaped into various kinds of configurations and to be functionalised, just like origami.
