Lots of Babies Near Mama’s Heart
2007-04-24 03:01:52
I love hearing all of the stories Mommies tell about breastfeeding their babies. I was especially pleased when Susan over at 5 Minutes for Mom wrote, “How Long Did You Nurse?” The answers range from weeks to months to years and it was very touching to read the struggles, challenges and triumphs of the mothers who posted. The love in the words of these Mamas just filled my heart. (I needed that today, so thanks!) In Susan’s post she also reviewed Near Mama’s Heart , my children’s book about breastfeeding. She writes: Near Mama’s Heart is a wonderfully unique book full of photos of nursing babies and their families. If your special time of nursing is over, you’ll enjoy the sweet reminder. Thanks Susan and Janice! It is important to remember that weather you nursed for a day, a week, a month or a year, you did and are doing the best that you can for your baby.  Mommy guilt is a powerful thing and no matter how long us Mommies breastfeed (or do anyth

Another RMH Update
2007-04-24 01:14:29
Jake Marcus, lawyer and breastfeeding advocate, sent in a comment on the last RMH Update I posted. I thought it deserved its own post. She wrote,  Just to let everyone know that Birth Without Boundaries is hosting the updates from these moms and their request for action. RMH only agreed to limited breastfeeding for these moms and not to any change in policy for other moms. Check out what the family is asking people to do to protect the right to breastfeed in Ronald McDonald Houses nationwide. Many thanks. Jake Marcus, J.D. Birth Without Boundaries International Thanks for the info. Jake!

Don’t get mad, get a picture!
2007-04-20 15:18:52
A friend of mine was hand painting a beautiful mural on her sons’ bedroom wall. As all moms do, this project was done in short bursts. In between laundry, crafts, stories and refereeing, she would paint a little bit at a time.  It was beautiful! The boys were so excited about it. It did seem as though if she tried to sneak a few minutes of painting in, they would run in and want to “help.” One day, in the midst of painting, Laura (not her real name) was called away. Thinking she would be “right back” was a mistake because, with all things Mama, the distractions of the day took her to another place. Another boo boo to kiss, fire to put out, peanut butter and jelly sandwich to make. Many Moms will warn you, “If it becomes “too quiet” you should probably go check on the kidlets.”  Laura heard this “silence” and decided she better go check on her munchkins. By now you have probably guessed that her

A Familymoon and Alternatives to Punishment
2007-04-15 05:45:08
I am taking the weekend off and I’m calling it a familymoon. I know this may not be a real word but think of it along the lines of a newly wed’s honeymoon or the new parent’s babymoon. Why? There has been too much computer time, work, and everything else that goes along with trying to be everything to everyone. I need to get back-to-basics and reconnect with my family. Since I want to make this quick, I thought I’d share a little gem I found over at Mothering.com. In their natural parenting toolbox I found a great article (below) that has ideas on one of my favorite topics - positive parenting. I only copied part of the article here, so make sure you click on the link to read the entire thing. I also encourage you to browse around while you are over there because there is a tremendous amount of helpful information on Mothering.com. Alternatives to Punishment Copy this list and post it where you can see it, as a constant reminder. • Use positive reinforceme

My Own Notes from the Underbelly
2007-04-12 23:15:10
I have made some notes of my own about the new show, Notes from the Underbelly, which premieres tonight, April 12th, at 10pm, on ABC. The description from the ABC website explains that this new sitcom is a “comic take on life’s greatest adventure - parenthood. This ensemble comedy proves that surviving the politics of pregnancy and maintaining your relationships with family and friends can be just as demanding as raising a child.” This show has the potential to be funny. After all, what about parenting isn’t funny? This show also has the potential to help positively promote breastfeeding. I even got my hopes up when watching the previews because I saw the men going out to buy a breast pump and the women talking about the “Pump and Dump” rules. Although this sitcom is supposed to be funny, in my opinion there is nothing funny about it at all.  As I continued to watch the previews, they made me very frustrated. In particular, Episode #4 &ldq

The Nursing Room Locator
2007-04-11 05:23:37
When you are going to be out and about and you may need a quiet place to feed your baby, check out the Nursing Room Locator.  Some of you may be thinking, “I don’t need a quiet place, I can breastfeed where ever I want” . . . and I agree. So does the creator of the NRL. She writes, “I firmly believe that every mother has the right to nurse her child wherever she sees fit, be it a bench in the mall or at the coffee shop down the street. That said, sometimes you just want a quiet place to feed your baby. Maybe you’re newly postpartum and still working on the mechanics of nursing. Maybe you have a distractible six-month-old who pops off at the slightest noise. Maybe you just prefer to nurse in private. For times like these, a nursing room is a wonderful place.” In my home state of Maryland the reviews are less than favorable, but it is a start. If you know of a place that should be added or reviewed, in Maryland or anywhere else for that matter, please contact Nur

Moms do “Nothing”
2007-04-09 02:10:27
As a new mom, you will get nothing done. Whole days will go by and you won’t remember what you did except feed the baby, change the baby’s diapers, get the baby to sleep. Doing &ldquo ;nothing&rdquo ; takes a lot of time. But you’ve done more by not doing anything than you did in entire days at the office. And it’s way more important than anything you’ve ever done at work. Remember that — it’s easy to forget. - Amy Einhorn in her book, The Fourth Trimester, And You Thought Labor Was Hard . . . (Crown Publishers, 2001).  I love this quote. I think it sums up how all moms feel, and gives them the confidence they need to feel good about their new role as a mom. It is not easy to transition from career woman to mom. In fact, it can be down right traumatic.  After sending this quote out to some fellow Mommies, several moms sent me some noteable comments in return. The most authentic response came from a dear friend, who thanked me for the reminder a

Britax Saved my Nephew’s Life
2007-04-27 05:14:27
My sister-in-law, Sue and six month old nephew, Dominic, were in a terrible accident a few weeks ago. His car seat was on the driver’s side; exactly where the other car slammed into my sister-in-laws mini van. From what she told me, you could barely put your index finger between the door and his car seat.               Sue and the baby are doing fine. Sue was pretty banged up but he did not even have a scratch on him. The Paramedic said that if Dominic was in any other car seat he would have been severely hurt. He said that every time he sees a baby (in a car accident) in a Britax they are never hurt.      For Christmas, my husband and I gave our precious baby nephew a Britax Boulevard Brownstone . We wouldn’t have it any other way. When I broached the subject with my husband, (of spending nearly $300 on a 3 month old’s Christmas present) he didn’t even think about it. He just said, “Yes, of course! He needs to be in the Britax!&rd

Teaching Your Child to Tie Their Shoes
2007-04-30 06:47:14
Remember when you learned to tie your shoes? I bet it was much harder than this: http://snipurl.com/1ippl But seriously, without even thinking twice, we tie our shoes (or our children’s) everyday. It’s easy, right? Not for me . . . Do you remember the moment when you finally figured out how to tie your own shoes? I do. I was sitting on my Grandma and Grandpa’s stairs. I am not sure how old I was (maybe 5?) but I’ll never forget that feeling of accomplishment. Wes has recently been asking me to teach him how to tie his shoes. I prefer slip-ons myself; Crocs are my new favorite. They are soooo comfortable. With Crocs, Velcro and other neat Slip-Ons, I can not help but to think that shoelaces are the new watch; they’ll be going extinct with the big and little hands. Do they even teach ”Telling Time with a Clock” anymore? I know what you are thinking. And since I have such fond memories of my own shoe tying accomplishments and since it tru

I found this sweet little poem about Mothers that I thought you would all appreciate. Enjoy! Who fed me from her gentle breast And hushed me in her arms to rest, And on my cheek sweet kisses prest? Evenflo Recalls Embrace Infant Car Seat and Carrier
2007-05-16 12:51:02
Emphasis on the carrier part, there. There have been 679 reports (with 160 injuries) of the handle releasing and the seat rotating forward enough for babies to fall out when the seat was being used as a carrier. That’s a lot of reports, and I’m surprised this recall hasn’t come sooner.read more | digg story

Where have I been?
2007-06-04 21:50:16
Wow! I can not believe how long it has been since I posted! The honest truth is that I have been busy in real life. I’ve lost 15 pounds, started (officially) homeschooling Wes and Claire, and my house is clean!   I have truly been enjoying my time away, but I have also missed catching up with all of you as well. Now the challenge is to find a balance between real life and staying current on the blog. What things have helped you find the balance in your life’s many roles?

Rear-facing - Unmatched Safety
2007-06-07 20:20:37
I have been meaning to get up on my soap box about the importance of keeping your child rear-facing in their car seat, for as long as possible. When I still had Wes rear facing well into his second year, it seemed like everyone had an opinion about it. Claire is almost 28 months and she will be rear facing until she is probably three and half; she is tiny and her car seat goes up to 33 lbs rear-facing. The facts are undeniable. Rear-facing is the safest way for your child to ride in a car. While doing some research tonight I found this article: Rear-facing - Unmatched Safety . It is a comprehensive article with many statistics, links and even a crash test video. I don’t think I could have done a better job writing another article, I thought I’d just point you directly to this one. Keep your children rear facing for as long as your car seat allows. Period.

Ice Cream Sunday, A Family “Treat”dition
2007-06-10 20:41:26
I have fond memories from my own childhood that I wouldn’t trade for all the money in the world. Easter Egg Hunts at Grandma and Pop Pop’s, Thanksgiving dinners at the &ldquo ;kid table&rdquo ;, ice cream cakes for every birthday . . . they make me smile just thinking of them. I have especially enjoyed creating new traditions with my own family. With my husband working long hours, almost everyday, we cherish the time he is home. Most mornings we give goodbye hugs and kisses and say, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Dada!” Luckily, Sunday is a short day for him and we can count on him being home for dinner and then doing bath time, (yay for me!) and then one of our favorite traditions of all: Ice Cream Sunday. According to parenting.org, “One of the most important things you can do to maintain a healthy family life is to have family traditions. Whether it’s with special foods or one-of-a-kind activities, traditions create fond childhood memories and bring

Hand Sanitizer Warning
2007-06-09 13:57:37
I have always had a thing about germs; especially after teaching preschoolers for several years. (The stuff I saw!) So, when hand sanitizer was introduced I ran right out and bought it. Hey, if Doctors’ use it to sanitize then it must be good, right? According to snopes.com, “More than half the calls received by most poison centers across the country involve children under the age of six.” Putting non edible items up and out of reach from curious little hands goes without saying. But who would have thought that hand sanitizer would be so dangerous?! Please read the entire article,   Booze Ooze; Ingestion of hand sanitizer by children can result in alcohol poisoning. It could save your child’s life.

Recall: 1.5 million Thomas the Tank Engine Trains and Accessories
2007-06-13 22:51:01
According to RC2’s website, “In cooperation with the CPSC, RC2 has issued a voluntary recall on June 13th, 2007, of various Thomas & Friends™ Wooden Railway vehicles and wooden train set components sold at toy stores and various retailers nationwide from January 2005 through June 2007. Tantrums, Fussing and Whining
2007-06-30 21:52:43
If you ask parents to list the most frustrating discipline problems during early childhood, you would find that these three items appear on every list. All children master their own version of these behaviors – every parent has to deal with them! Controlling their emotions Most often these behaviors are caused by a child’s inability to express or control his emotions. Tiredness, hunger, boredom, frustration and other causes that ignite The Big Three can frequently be avoided or modified. When your child begins a meltdown, try to determine if you can tell what underlying issue is causing the problem. Solve that problem and you’ll likely have your sweet child back again. Handling tantrums, fussing and whining No matter how diligent you are in recognizing trigger causes, your child will still have meltdown moments. Or even meltdown days. The following tips can help you handle those inevitable bumps in the road. Be flexible and practice those solutions that seem to bring the best res

I love my kids; the things they say, the way they love, the time they spend together as friends, the sheer essense of all that they are. Wes and Claire: You are my whole world and today I am extra grateful for you! No words will ever descibe they way I feel about you.
