Commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month With Pink Beads

One of the many Breast Cancer Awareness Bracelets available at Shanrene.com October is breast cancer awareness month and I thought I would commemorate the month by highlighting some of the ways bead jewelry artists are donating money to finding a cure for breast cancer and raising breast cancer awareness. Find a Bead Store or Bead Club Online MapMuse

A few days ago I received an email from MapMuse.com that really intrigued me. It turns out they’ve created an online map where you can search for Bead Shops and Beading Clubs throughout the US. You can just go to the map and either browse by a general area or town or actually zoom into a specific zip code! Once you find all the beading stores on the map, you can hover your mouse over each location and a little pop up window appears, giving you the location of that store as well as information submitted by volunteers about the specialties of the beading shop you’re looking at. Since they’ve started the project they have had over 400 contributions and changes to the map, but now they’re asking for our help! You can add other stores and clubs you know about and you can inform the site if a store has closed. I don’t work with high quality Swarovski crystal beads as much as I’d like to when I’m designing my bead jewelry, but I’ve recently discovered how I can create virtal jewelry patterns online using Swarovski crystals and have fun at least imagining I can afford to always work with the really expensive stuff. No, this isn’t a late April Fool’s joke! I went to a craft show last weekend (as a shopper, not an exhibitor) and I saw a lady there with some beautiful bead jewelry bracelets and necklaces. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted some strange looking bracelets that had a buckle clasp. I picked up one and, sure enough, the tag said “Dog Collar!” It was a real dog collar with a beaded strand of gemstones attached to the collar on each end! The woman at the show (she doesn’t have a website) didn’t have any collars that were small enough for my little doggy at the time. She said she had sold out of them and was going to start bringing more “small dog” collars to her next show. With Thanksgiving coming up I began thinking about Native American Indians and how they could really be considered the first American bead fanatics! This is a no-brainer to lovers of Southwest art and design and people who live near Native American populations and reservations. Here on the East Coast we tend to forget how important beads were in the American Indian culture and how amazingly intricate and beautiful much of their beadwork is. There are plenty of amazing examples of Native American bead jewerly to be found. One of my ‘must-do’ items for my life is go on a Bead Cruise someday. The most well-known bead cruise can be found over at www.beadcruise.com. What exactly is a Bead cruise you ask? It’s a vacation and great way to enjoy bead jewelry all in one! It’s an actual cruise with all the regular vacation activities as well as beading classes, professional instructors and plenty of time to meet other beadaholics and share your love of bead jewelry with others while on the high seas! Each year a new cruise is chosen! This year the Bead Cruise is sailing in March 2007 from Galveston, TX for a 5 day cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya on Royal Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas. Now that the summer heat is here my home has been getting pretty warm during the day, so I’ve been using our ceiling fans a lot to cool things down. More Amazing Ancient Shell Beads Discovered

They don’t look like much, but these were probably used by ancient man (and woman!) to create primitive bead jewelry! They don’t look very decorative, but scientists have once again found some of the oldest man-made “beads” ever discovered! These 82,000 year old small snail shells have evidence of a red paint applied to the sides and obvious stringing holes drilled into them by someone long, long ago. Last year another discovery of ancient shell beads was reported, but this latest finding of beads seems to be much older than the first. National Geographic is reporting the find. Fire Mountain Gems has a huge 50% sale where you can get some pretty good deals on just about everything they carry, including beading supplies, tools, gifts, all sorts of components and more. It looks like they are selling off a lot of their extra or out dated inventory, so now is a good time to stock up on some items that you may have been holding off buying.
