Commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month With Pink Beads 2006-10-15 16:40:41 One of the many BreastCancerAwareness
Bracelets available at Shanrene.com
October is breast cancer awareness month and I thought I would commemorate the month by highlighting some of the ways bead jewelry artists are donating money to finding a cure for breast cancer and raising breast cancer awareness.
BreastCancer.org - A wonderful site filled with information, inspiring stories and helpful information. They do have an online gift shop with some bead jewelry items.
Beads
for A Cure - Survivor Shari Slonski created this very personal site that raises breast cancer awareness and inspires victims and families alike. She has a lot of beautiful and inspirationaly bead jewelry that is not only pink, but many colors for members of families, sisters and mothers. One of my favorite features of this site, besides all her professional looking jewelry, is her Cancer Awareness Color Chart which can serve as a guide for making jewelry of your own or buying it for yourself or someone else.

Find a Bead Store or Bead Club Online MapMuse 2006-10-08 15:10:24
A few days ago I received an email from MapMuse.com that really intrigued me. It turns out they’ve created an online map where you can search for Bead Shops and Beading Clubs throughout the US. You can just go to the map and either browse by a general area or town or actually zoom into a specific zip code!
Once you find all the beading stores on the map, you can hover your mouse over each location and a little pop up window appears, giving you the location of that store as well as information submitted by volunteers about the specialties of the beading shop you’re looking at.
Since they’ve started the project they have had over 400 contributions and changes to the map, but now they’re asking for our help! You can add other stores and clubs you know about and you can inform the site if a store has closed. They’re even thinking about adding additional features including a beading blog and a beading message board in the future!
I think this is a grea Read more:Store
New Category: Online Bead Jewelry Tools 2006-09-30 15:38:57 Short update: I’ve decided to create a new category here which highlights all the great online bead jewelry tools which you can use from your computer. A lot of these tools are virtual bead boards where you can actually design bead jewelry on your computer screen, but some of the tools are also to help you pick out bead jewelry colors and patterns.
I know there are a lot of great tools out there on the World Wide Web, so please help others by posting your favorite online bead jewelry discoveries!

Swarovski Virtual Bead Board Online Jewelry Designer 2006-09-13 20:05:31
I don’t work with high quality Swarovski
crystal beads as much as I’d like to when I’m designing my bead jewelry, but I’ve recently discovered how I can create virtal jewelry patterns online using Swarovski crystals and have fun at least imagining I can afford to always work with the really expensive stuff.
It’s the Swarovski Virtual Bead Jewelry
Design Tool! It’s not part of the regular Swarovski.com website, but rather its own tool on a special “Create Your Style With Swarovski” website. The whole website is actually filled with some neat ideas and information about the company and its products.
This virtual Bead Board
is actually pretty straightforward and a little less complex to use than some of the others I’ve featured in this blog. Visit the site and go to the Design Tool portion. Scroll down through the brief instructions and click on the link to start the tool. You will need to have FLASH installed for this one to wo Read more:Designer
Bead Jewelry Idea - Bead Jewelry For Your Pet! 2006-08-29 03:26:50
No, this isn’t a late April Fool’s joke!
I went to a craft show last weekend (as a shopper, not an exhibitor) and I saw a lady there with some beautiful bead jewelry bracelets and necklaces. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted some strange looking bracelets that had a buckle clasp. I picked up one and, sure enough, the tag said “Dog Collar!” It was a real dog collar with a beaded strand of gemstones attached to the collar on each end!
The woman at the show (she doesn’t have a website) didn’t have any collars that were small enough for my little doggy at the time. She said she had sold out of them and was going to start bringing more “small dog” collars to her next show. When I got home I started looking around the internet and found a lot of people selling all sorts of neat-looking pet collar bead jewelry.

Learn How To Create Bead Jewelry With Kits from Beadsphere 2006-10-29 23:46:55 One of over 250 bead jewelry kits available at Beadsphere.com
A friend who is starting to get into stitch bead jewelry told me about this great site where you can get some really beautiful kits to help you learn how to make some amazing pieces with beads and stitching. It’s called Beadsphere and it really lives up to its name!
The site is easy to navigate and the photos of all their kits and offerings are great! They sell a bunch of different things including bead jewelry kits (patterns with all the beads), finished bead jewelry pieces, and plenty of the Miyuki beads that they use in most of their designs. They also have a few tutorials, monthly specials and some wonderful examples of things you can do with beads (like christmas ornaments) that are not usually found in bead kit format!
My favorite part about the site is that the over 250 different bead project kits are broken down by skill level, so you can find pieces that fit your abilities, whether you’re a novice or Read more:Jewelry
A Quick Look At Beautiful Native American Bead Jewelry 2006-11-07 04:19:04
With Thanksgiving coming up I began thinking about NativeAmerican
Indians and how they could really be considered the first American bead fanatics!
This is a no-brainer to lovers of Southwest art and design and people who live near Native American populations and reservations. Here on the East Coast we tend to forget how important beads were in the American Indian culture and how amazingly intricate and beautiful much of their beadwork is.
There are plenty of amazing examples of Native American bead jewerly to be found. One of the best places I discovered is E-pueblo.com’s Native American Jewelry
area, a store based in the Southwest that specializes in Native American art and jewelry and has an amazing collection of authentic pieces by local artisans. To the right is one of the many pieces on the site by Ray Lovato. It’s made out of handcut natural turquoise beads. It’s absolutely beautiful, but I can’t imagine how much work it is to actually cut ea Read more:Quick

Bead Cruise 2006-11-14 13:18:01
One of my ‘must-do’ items for my life is go on a Bead Cruise
someday. The most well-known bead cruise can be found over at www.beadcruise.com.
What exactly is a Bead cruise you ask?
It’s a vacation and great way to enjoy bead jewelry all in one! It’s an actual cruise with all the regular vacation activities as well as beading classes, professional instructors and plenty of time to meet other beadaholics and share your love of bead jewelry with others while on the high seas!
Each year a new cruise is chosen! This year the Bead Cruise is sailing in March 2007 from Galveston, TX for a 5 day cruise to Cozumel and Costa Maya on Royal Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas. Their website has a good bit of info and links to a photo gallery, a bead cruise blog, and a Yahoo group where you can find out even more!
New Beads, Vintage Beads, Bead Facts and more at The Beadin' Path 2006-11-21 00:27:18
I love bead stores that are more than just stores that sell the ordinary collection of new beads. I like stores that have some “character” and sell all sorts of interesting materials and tools and beads that I’ve never seen before. I haven’t visited their store in person yet, but the website of The Beadin’ Path makes me want to take a trip to Maine next summer!
There’s no such thing as a quick visit to their website, either. First of all, they have a lot of funky beads at competitive prices. There are three ways you can shop: They have a “Shop For Beads
” section which is broken out by logical categories and includes easy to see sharp photos of every bead they offer, they have a Bead Bargains section with all their sale items and they have a “What’s New” section with the latest additions to their shop. I love all the vintage beads they have dispersed throughout the site. I don’t usually see many “o Read more:Vintage
Holiday Gifts for Bead Jewelry Artists 2006-12-12 03:15:15
Like a lot of people I’ve been pretty busy with the holidays, but I thought I would help out all you non-beaders with gift ideas for us bead-a-holics!
Beadstoppers - I’ve featured these little lifesavers before, but I can’t emphasis enough how amazingly useful these are, especially to the person who is new to bead jewelry. They’re little springs which you can attach to the ends of your wire or ribbon or string when you’re making a piece of jewelry. These little springs keep the beads from falling off if you drop or bump the piece or if you just haven’t tied the ends off yet. They’re affordable and innovative and thoughtful!
Bling Bling Beaded Bracelet Kit - Got a junior bead jewelry artist in the family? Start her off with any one of a dozen great beading kits designed specially for kids. There are actually lots of different kits available for younger jewelry artists, from 5 to 15! Look around and choose one that is age appropriate.

Bead Jewelry Idea - Bead Jewelry Charms for Cell Phones 2007-01-03 17:21:04 A beaded cell phone charm from Beadstudio.com
I’ve taken some time off creating my own jewelry just to give myself some “mental space” before starting up for the spring and summer craft season again. While I haven’t created anything of my own in about a month, I have visited two small craft fairs and noticed that almost all the bead jewelry artisans there were selling something I have yet to make: Beaded Cell Phone Charms
!
Beaded cell phone charms are really quite easy to make and lots of fun! They are usually nothing more than a single strand of beads that attaches to your cell phone or to your cell phone case. They help you find your cell phone in a crowded purse in a hurry and give your phone a unique flare that no one else has!
To make a cell phone charm all you really need to do it put together a short strand of beads as though you were designing a bracelet or necklace. Instead of using a clasp you can generally use a cell phone finding. Attach your st Read more:Jewelry

St. Patrick's Day Bead Jewelry Ideas 2007-02-15 13:01:33
A beautiful St. Patrick
’s Day customized beaded bracelet from Shanrene.com!
If you have a craft show coming up in the next month or so you might want to consider some St. Patrick’s Day bead jewelry. Seasonal jewelry always does very well for me, depending on the time of year. I find that the Fall is usually better for this sort of thing than the Spring holidays, but St. Patrick’s Day seems to be an exception. Whenever I have a craft show in late February or early March I invariably sell more green jewelry and get asked “Do you have anything for St. Patrick’s Day?”
I don’t normally make anything specifically for St. Patrick’s Day, but I have a small show that I’m going to sell at where I might give it a try. I decided to look around for inspiration and found a few great sites that have the items and even samples of some great St. Patrick’s Day Bead Jewelry

Bead Jewelry Idea - Prayer Beads 2007-03-01 12:08:19
A sample of the divinely beautiful prayer beads at FullCircleBeads
.com
I was in my local bead shop the other day and browsing through all the new pendendants they had gotten in when I saw a woman on the other side of the table who was piling on pieces like there was no tomorrow. Most of them were cross pendants of one form or another, most were sterling silver but a few were made of jade or some other colored stone. I said hello and we started talking. It turns out she was teaching a class at the local senior center on how to make your own prayer beads just in time for Easter. But then she told me that she normally makes her own Rosaries and regularly sells them at craft shows and church bazaars!
I came home and started looking into this and it turns out the the Rosary is just one of many different types of prayer beads one can use in a variety of different faiths and religions. In fact, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam many different faiths of Christianity and even some Native Ameri Read more:Jewelry

Elle Jule - A Canadian Bead Jewelry Designer With Inspiration 2007-03-19 12:30:00
The Band Together Bracelet - One of ElleJule.com’s amazing bead jewelry designs!
Danielle Stirling contacted me about a link exchange, but when I saw her website and everything she has going on, I knew I had to feature her work here! She’s a creative Canadian
bead jewelry designer who has been making her own jewelry and expressing her creativity in one form or another since the 6th grade! Last year she finally did what a lot of bead jewelers would like to do and turned her hobby into a way of life!
One look at her work on her website ElleJule.com and you can tell she’s a serious jewelry artist who knows has a knack for creating some amazing handcrafted bead jewelry. And while a lot of us tend to specialize in one or two types of beads that we use in our jewelry, Danielle freely mixes metals, Swarovski, lampwork beads, glass and silver all so inventively and so beautifully that you can’t help but be totally mesmerized by her pieces!

Bead Jewelry Trends for Spring and Summer 2007 2007-04-06 12:16:34 Some of the hot bead jewelry colors for 2007 according to Fire Mountain Gems and Beads.
I haven’t had the inspiration to make many beaded pieces lately due to the nasty cold and wet weather we’ve been having here on the East Coast. Over the weekend I was going through my calendar, trying to plan on what craft shows I want to try to sell bead jewelry at for this spring and summer, but I just couldn’t get into it.
I decided that I needed some major inspiration, so I decided to see what the “experts” are saying about what the hot bead jewerly and fashion trends are going to be this spring and summer.

Bead Jewelry Software for Running Your Business 2007-04-17 12:34:27
If you’re reading this blog it means you love making and wearing bead jewelry and it means you know how to use a computer and read about your favorite hobby ! I know a few professional bead jewelry artists (meaning it is one of their main sources of income) and they all complain about the complexity of running the “business” end of their bead jewelry business. Most of them don’t use computers, but I started to wonder if there were any serious software programs for the computer that could help bead jewelry artists run their businesses.
There are, of course, plenty of online bead jewelry tools and designers that I’ve featured before, but I haven’t spent much time investigating other types of programs that could help with the business side of selling my jewelry.
The definite “queen” of the JewelryBusinessSoftware
market is Jewelry Design Manager by Bejeweled Software company. There are three versions of their famous software, each wit
iBead Unveils New Bead Jewelry Website with a Bold Color Scheme 2007-04-24 12:03:08
Black is Beautiful at the newly designed iBead.com.
In the past I’ve reviewed different online bead stores, but I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned iBead.com before. I have bought from them in the past but there was nothing extraordinary about the experience. Their new website looks very promising, though!
The moment you visit iBead.com you realize something is “different” but you might not be able to identify it right away. It’s the COLOR of the pages! Instead of being like 99% of all the bead jewelry online stores out there, iBead has taken a radical change and gone with a dark black and charcoal colors page scheme instead of the standard white.
I was thrilled about the difference at first, but after surfing around it for a while I have to wonder if it is really a good idea. Most of the bead photos are still against a white background, so you can still get a sense of the brightness in the bead colors. Color

Beautifully Creative Bead Jewelry at Z Creations 2007-05-06 12:39:34 “Dreamcicle” by CreativeZ Jewelry
was named partly for its colors and partly because designer Valerie Z. Holstead wore it for her own wedding!
Bead jewelry designer and entrepreneur Valerie Z. Holstead actually contacted me about her new Z Creations Jewelry website, but if I had just stumbled upon it I would have guessed that she’d been designing and selling bead jewelry on the Internet for years! With beautifully unique pieces made out of high-quality crystals and metals, Valerie’s jewelry sparkles online as much as it does in person.
Always creative, Valerie turned the loss of a friend and coworker into a bright spot by taking some time off her day job to re-examine what was important to her. She had always been creative and started venturing into all sorts of ways to use her creativity to make ends meet. She dabbled in a number of things including soy candles and homemade dog treats, but she found her true calling when she started creating bead jewelry.
Amazing Bead Jewelry For A Good Cause 2007-05-12 13:31:17 This tier drops choker was created by women in India and sold through WorldofGood.com to help them earn a living wage.
I like to highlight all the positive ways people around the world are using bead jewelry to help one another. I recently stumbled across the World of Good website which features all sorts of fair trade products crafted by artisans all over the world and sold for a fair price.
They have a lot of really eclectic and unique pieces, but the World of Good jewelry section astounded me because most of it is made with beads, is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, is amazingly affordable and is helping people around the world!
World of Good helps artisans in impoverished nations by allowing them to create incredible works of art and paying a living wage for those works, and then bringing those pieces to mainstream markets through the internet and other channels. UV Sol Beads - Fighting Skin Cancer with Color Changing Beads 2007-05-20 16:35:40 Color changing Sol Beads
jewelry change from white to bright colors depending UV light exposure.
With the weather finally beginning to get warmer and everyone starting to spend much more time outside in the sun, I thought I would show you to a really amazing type of bead jewelry that helps remind you to be careful about getting too much sunlight at one time.
How can a piece of bead jewelry do that? By changing color in UV light! Patricia Swanson was a science teacher whose dear friend had a struggle with skin cancer. Patricia knew a thing or two about how sunlight works, so she put together UV Sol Beads - simple beaded jewelry pieces that are an opaque white inside, but turn bright colors depending upon how much UV light they are exposed to! They can turn from while to full color over 50,000 times!
You don’t even have to wear them as jewelry. You can tie them to your purse or stroller or any part of your clothing that will be exposed to sunlight just as your skin will be. A Read more:Fighting

Computer Keyboard Bead Jewelry 2007-06-04 04:52:09 Learn how to make bead jewelry from old computer keyboards at the DIYNetwork!
Okay, I admit that I have a soft spot for bead jewelry made out of very unconventional “beads” that most people wouldn’t consider jewelry. I don’t usually wear jewelry that isn’t conventional, but I simply fall in love with the idea of recycling and using household items to create works of art and beauty! In the past I’ve highlighted coffee bean bead jewelry, bead jewelry made from old typewriter keys and even some artistic beaded items made from candy wrappers.
But here’s a more modern approach to the typewriter key jewelry: computer keyboard beads! It seems like this is a pretty popular idea because more than one jewelry artist out there is making some fascinating things out of discarded keyboards.

Bead Jewelry Idea: Custom Bead Fan Pulls 2007-06-12 04:48:58
Check out the beautiful hand made bead and crystal ceiling fan pulls at All Things Beaded by Cynthia Santana !
Now that the summer heat is here my home has been getting pretty warm during the day, so I’ve been using our ceiling fans a lot to cool things down. I was working on a beaded bracelet for my niece today and as I reached up to pull the chain to turn on my ceiling fan I realized that I was holding a fan chain in one hand and a jewelry chain in the other!
I quickly looked around and found that a lot of bead jewelers had beaten me to this idea, but it still seems like a fun one: making custom beaded fan pulls! Most fans come with pretty standard teardrop or round balls on the end of ceiling fan chains that may match the fan, but don’t really pull any sense of style or elegance into the room.
Beaded fan pulls look like they’re something that are really pretty easy to make, and they would probably sell pretty well at craft shows during the summer months. T Read more:Jewelry

More Amazing Ancient Shell Beads Discovered 2007-06-22 05:01:12 They don’t look like much, but these were probably used by ancient man (and woman!) to create primitive bead jewelry!
They don’t look very decorative, but scientists have once again found some of the oldest man-made “beads” ever discovered! These 82,000 year old small snail shells have evidence of a red paint applied to the sides and obvious stringing holes drilled into them by someone long, long ago.
Last year another discovery of ancient shell beads was reported, but this latest finding of beads seems to be much older than the first. National Geographic is reporting the find.
From the article:
In a paper published in the June issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the archaeologists suggest that the beads mark a shift in human development and the beginnings of modern cultural behavior.
“We think that they were capable of thinking symbolically and able to use one thing to represent another,” Nick Barton said.

Using Hardware Washers for Homemade Bead Jewelry 2007-06-28 04:39:36
Using washers to make jewelry. Photo and full instruction can be found at the Vermont Rutland Herald!
Once again, I’ve stumbled across a really cool idea for creating a type of bead jewelry out of found objects that are not really considered traditional jewelry items. In the past we’ve seen people who make jewelry out of recycled junk and craft beautiful jewelry pieces out candy wrappers! This time it’s decorative wrapping paper and metal washers. This project is so easy it’s even a neat idea for children or little girls’ birthday parties!
This comes from the Vermont Rutland Herald’s website that has the full instructions online. From their site:
Washers are available in so many sizes and they cost just a few cents. You can create large and chunky necklaces with jumbo washers or dainty and delicate necklaces with small washers. Charm bracelets can be made by using lots of small washers and doughnut-shaped earrings are perfect for summer fu Read more:Hardware

Cheap Beading Supplies Can Be Found At Closing Rag Shop Stores 2007-07-04 06:21:39
Hurry! You can still get some great jewelry supplies on sale at your local closing Rag Shop store!
I normally like to write about beading supply vendors that sell their inventory online as well as in a real store, but this is a special case. Rag Shop is closing and selling off everything they have! For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, Rag Shop is a arts and crafts supply store that carried a little bit of everything, including seasonal decor items, fabric and even bead jewelry supplies. Their stores were often smaller in space than a JoAnne’s Frabrics or a Michael’s, but they had a lot of neat and unique items and always had great sales.
They are closing all 61 stores, that extend up and down the East Coast of the US, mostly between Connecticut and Florida. Rag Shop’s bankruptcy is due to increase competition from places like Wal-Mart and the larger craft stores that simply have so much inventory and market power and that a small store can’t easily comp Read more:Cheap

Gems has a huge 50% sale where you can get some pretty good deals on just about everything they carry, including beading supplies, tools, gifts, all sorts of components and more. It looks like they are selling off a lot of their extra or out dated inventory, so now is a good time to stock up on some items that you may have been holding off buying.
Many of the items, especially the beads, really are half off their retail price, which makes this a pretty exciting sale. I’ve been surfing through the sale items picking out some things that I was interested in a while ago but just didn’t want to spend the money at the time.
