What’s Worse Than a Diaper Full of Sand? A Diaper Full of Sand and Shit. 2007-04-21 04:48:45 So what’s been going on in the PHAT house lately? Little League season has started. Yeah!
We’re getting some warmer weather and C wants to be in the sandbox every day. She lays down and covers herself in sand, so we just strip her down to her diaper and let her go to town. Today [...]

VA Tech: Nothing “Could Have Been Done” 2007-04-18 20:18:58 Like many people, I’ve been flipping channels and watching the news unfold about this tragedy at VA Tech. It’s a horrible thing that happened, but I am getting really annoyed watching the media speculate about how it “could have been prevented.” Is the emergency response team at VA Tech up to speed? There were [...]

Search Engine Funds Public Ed 2007-04-12 13:19:51 CatchTomorrow is a new search engine that is donating 50% of its gross revenue to America’s public schools. Interesting idea, although I’m not convinced more money is the answer to the public school’s problems.

Notes From Spin Class 2007-04-12 02:10:33 About 10 years ago, I taught Spinning (exercise class done on stationary bikes). Then I had a child and kinda dropped out of exercise classes, opting to do my own thing during my sporadic trips to the gym. But I missed the motivation, the group dynamic, the instructor to guide me and push me just [...]

Custom Charts 2007-04-08 23:06:35 I’ve always been a pretty organized person. I like charts and schedules and goals. Lately I haven’t been using these tools and I’ve truly felt a negative effect in my life. So I’ve been trying to get back on track.
I just found a fun and useful web site that creates custom charts. It’s designed [...]

Tabletop Photo Gallery 2007-04-08 21:37:18 Another cool idea from FamilyFun magazine: Rejuvenate an old card table by covering it with a photo collage. Take a bunch of family photos, arrange them on the table and cover the whole thing with Mod-Podge to seal it.
Sounds like a great rainy-day activity that my kids would love.

Two Years of Bloggity Disarray 2007-03-30 04:41:50 Today is my two-year blogging anniversary. Two years of motley posts, unfocused ramblings, continually-changing designs. Not that that’s a bad thing.
My life, like this blog, has been in a state of disarray. But in a good way. I’ve changed and grown over the past two years, and I’m not just talking about the 25 pounds [...]

Hot Dogs and Coca-Cola 2007-03-29 17:34:13 Today in history:
Coca-cola was invented in 1886. I found this article interesting, if a bit alarmist.
Oscar Mayer’s birthday. Read about the history of hot dogs. Then create this simple Hot Dog Vendor box with your kids. And I bet imaginative children can find all kinds of uses for this craft besides playing “hot dog vendor.”

Spiders! 2007-03-24 00:58:44 OK, I don’t like spiders. I get creeped by pretty much any bug. Naturally, this aversion has rubbed off on my son, so he’s not exactly the kind of boy that’s made of “snips and snails and puppy dog tails.” That said, I occasionally make an attempt to show him that bugs can be [...]

Every Day’s a Holiday 2007-03-19 14:54:14 Did you know that every day’s a holiday? And there are some interesting ones. I like to search the web to find out what’s special about today, then create a little “celebration” that incorporates a learning activity. A great resource is About.com’s Fundays Calendar, which includes links of related activities for each “funday.”

The Heart Can’t Be Superglued 2007-03-17 20:25:02 L started an art class a couple weeks ago at a local paint-your-own pottery shop. The instructor has been wonderful, teaching L about drawing, sculpting and painting through hands-on projects.
In the first class, he drew a landscape. She taught him about depth and the horizon, how to paint from light to dark, and how [...]

Winning, Losing, Praising 2007-04-22 20:53:05 It was the fourth (and last) inning in my son’s first Little League game of the season. His team, the Orioles, was down 5 to 0. Suddenly, they got a hit, a stolen base, another couple hits, then an awesome hit that was close to a home run. The score was 5 to 4!
