Pretending to be something else 2007-04-25 14:11:00 I think it is probably a known fact that the wife and I are (were) big Hot Water Music fans and (thus) fans of both ex-HWM projects The Draft and Chuck Ragan's solo project. Something about the earnest post-hardcore that HWM played just struck a nerve with us and so many other people. And while I like The Draft quite a bit, I was always partial to Chuck's voice over Chris Wollard's. A bit more gruff and just a bit more powerful.Chuck Ragan has a new live solo album called Los Feliz that will be released May 8th on Side One Dummy and it is full of gut-wrenching songs played by a guy (that's Chuck) with only his acoustic guitar for cover. You can hear Chuck's passion in every heartfelt breath. Now rather than posting something
from Chuck's forthcoming Los Feliz album, here is an entire live set from sometime in 2006 at LA's Troubadour. Cheers!MP3 | Chuck Ragan - Dancing With You MP3 | Chuck Ragan - Sound Of A Gun MP3 | Chuck Ragan - The Boat MP3 | Chuck Ragan - It's What You Will
In a primo part of town 2007-04-25 03:16:00 Well, we missed the Moxie Motive EP release show a few weeks ago at the Empty Bottle, so the least we can do is say something about the band. For starters, they are from Chicago and play some seriously soulful and searing garagey indie rock that sounds a bit like Pablo-era Radiohead or The Verve. Yep.Oh yeah, they also manage to work some sweet violin melodies into their songs as well. And even though there are only seven songs on the EP, they are all huge. This brings me to another question. How can there be so many great bands in Chicago right now? Seriously? I'm certainly counting Moxie Motive as one of those bands. You decide for yourself. When the going gets tough the get go 2007-04-24 20:24:00 I don't think I've mentioned it here, but my former band Allister recently called it quits. Sad news for fans of well-played pop-punk but there is a little silver lining. Scott and Kyle from Allister have formed a new band called The Get Go with Chris Messer (ex-Showoff), Dan Hammond (ex-Home Grown), and Nick Gigler (ex-Mest). And no, Nick isn't the guy from Mest that stabbed some guy in LA a month ago. Unsurprisingly, The Get Go (thus far) sounds a lot like the above bands with Messer's distinctive vocals setting them apart.Their first show is scheduled for June in Detroit, and no plans for an album have been announced. The two belong songs are webrips from the band's myspace page.MP3 | The Get Go - Face In The Dirt MP3 | The Get Go - You Versus Me
Everything in this room is edible 2007-04-24 14:59:00 I went to get my haircut on Saturday morning and during the 5 minute drive to the salon I managed to catch "The Magic Position" by London indie popstar Patrick Wolf on local college radio station WONC. The song is sooooo good. It is title track from Patrick's latest album which is also quite good. It was (as so much music is) absolutely perfect in the moment of a warm and cloudless Saturday morning. Having not heard anything from him before, I was very pleasantly surprised at just how great his unique brand of pop was. Nothing like weaving theatric and affected vocal melodies with lovely violins and other instruments and smashing them into glitchy electronics. You know that I'll be heading out to get The Magic Position when it is officially released next week. In the meantime, have yourself a listen.MP3 | Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position The Magic PositionMP3 | Patrick Wolf - Accident And Emergency The Magic PositionFind more music from Patrick Wolf at The Hype Machine. Being the odd man out never hurt 2007-04-24 03:35:00 Don't you just love stumbling into great new music? Some such music is from Connecticut's Titles. From what I've heard of their 2006 self-titled album on Welcome Home Records, they are an excellently crafty mash-up of jangly midwestern guitars, country-blues riffs, decidedly indie vocals, and an abrasive rhythm section. Perhaps they are the East Coast's answer to Birdmonster? Perhaps they are forging completely new territory that raggedly rocks like Red Red Meat meets Christie Front Drive. Anyway you size 'em up, Titles appear to be ready to make you tap your toes, nod your head, and (thus) rock your socks off. They even have a new split 7" out on Saftey Meeting Records that deserves your attention. Cheers. MP3 | Titles - Dust STMP3 | Titles - Pink Pair Of Shoes ST
Late for work by nobody cares 2007-04-23 14:10:00 The latest album from newly Portland-based singer/songwriter Laura Veirs is called Saltbreakers and it is great. I must disagree with the fairly negative Pitchfork review which states that Saltbreakers is full of "songs that aim low and leave no impression on landing" and "sewage." Rubbish, I tell you.The album (like 2005's Carbon Glacier was) is full of literate folk-pop that is backed by diverse and grandiose instrumentation and (occasionally) an airy electronic haze. Oftentimes quite similar to Liz Phair's in that they both have a limited vocal range, Veirs' voice is warm, cozy, and downright soothing. A perfect accompaniment for a lazy Sunday afternoon lounging around the house with the fam.Saltbreakers is out now on Nonesuch Records.MP3 | Laura Veirs - Don't Lose Yourself SaltbreakersMP3 | Laura Veirs - Cast A Hook SaltbreakersFind more music from Laura Veirs at The Hype Machine.

Let go of your throat sweet throttle 2007-04-30 02:40:00 I'm not sure that I ever mentioned how great it was to ring in 2007 while watching the Smoking Popes and Alkaline Trio at Metro. Well it was. I only bring it up now because I finally got around to ripping the songs from the limited edition split 7" we got for attending the show. The above picture was one of only a few that my wife was able to take before Metro security confiscated her camera for the duration of the show. Bummer, but at least we got the 7". It features the Popes covering a Trio song and the Trio covering a Popes song. Not the ideal soundtrack for removing a stinky dead opossum from under our front porch, but I'm not sure that anything would be.MP3 | Smoking Popes - Blue Carolina Split 7"MP3 | Alkaline Trio - Off My Mind Split 7"
Page fourteen of the sunday paper 2007-04-29 16:40:00 Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler's 2006 album It Takes Two! is an exercise is understatement and I have really been enjoying it lately. On the album, Wheeler is accompanied by guitarists John Abercrombie and John Parricelli with bassist Anders Jormin. The quartet weaves a gentle and understated jazz tapestry. And while Abercrombie's and Parricelli's instruments (both electric and nylon-stringed guitars) sing in a different voice than Wheeler, they are a perfect compliment. Wheeler's distinctive tone is breezy and melancholic and his lyrical melodies saunter along with an almost Latin (or bluesy Flamenco) feel at times. It Takes Two! is a gorgeous but mostly somber affair that often makes me think of Miles Davis at his most restrained. Most amazing is that Wheeler (now 77 years old) is still playing with such passion and clarity after almost 40 years. It Takes Two! is available from Sunny Side Records or you can purchase it here.MP3 | Kenny Wheeler - After All It Takes Two!MP3 | Kenny Wheeler Read more:paper

From the shores of stockholm 2007-04-28 04:15:00 In the pre-dawn hours, lakes can be still with a glassy calm. As the sun rises a mist starts to lift. Traces of fragmented vocals sometimes percolate to the top. The looping ambient rhythms that lay just beneath the surface shift and swell as bubbling pulses slowly pound through the quietest din. This is From Here We Go Sublime. From Here We Go Sublime is the debut full-length from Swedish producer Axel Willner as The Field. It is full of atmospheric minimal techno that is mesmerizing, meditative, and nearly lulled me into rear-ending the car in front of me on my way home today. The bass drum thumps like a newborn's heartbeat and breathes life into what might otherwise be an exercise in icy droning minimalism.Instead of stale and repetitive 4/4 beats, Willner manages to create music that is both subtle and vibrant. Music that works on the dancefloor but just as well (and maybe better) as a chill-out soundtrack in your living room. The Field's From Here We Go Sublime is out now on Col

Scarlett johansson why don't you love me 2007-05-02 14:01:00 Ahh yes. Flight Of The Bass Delegate is the debut full-length from the Chicago-by-way-of-Philadelphia group called The Jai-Alai Savant. It is full of danceable dub and reggae-influenced proto post-punk that has taken my iPod by storm. The music on Bass Delegate (in some ways) is reminiscent of The Eternals' latest album Heavy International, but is more straightforward and pop-oriented. Even so, there are some meandering dub jams that are simply otherworldly. I mean, who doesn't love the horns? There are also moments that rock with the same punkish guitar punch and angular skronk that Fugazi made famous. Is it a dance record? Is it a post-punk record? Is it a dub record? Yes. Bass Delegate is all of the above and more. It is an eclectic and adventurous album that refuses to adhere to conventions. The Jai-Alai Savant is unafraid of making challenging and scorching music that also has catchy hooks. Because of this the first album I instantly thought to compare it to was The Clash's spr Read more:Scarlett
Watch me floating inches above 2007-05-02 02:35:00 Sometimes great stuff somehow sneaks its way into my inbox. A recent find was the Time I've Wasted EP from the New York band Normandy. It bustles forth with four songs full of energy and melody. It is untamed indie pop that dares to be a little noisy as well as catchy. The result is something akin to a much less dangerous and kid-friendly version of Parts And Labor. Like wearing sunscreen and staying out in the sun a little too long, it might hurt a little, but its not a bad burn and the tan you're gonna get is totally worth it.Although singer Vincent Dee claims that the Shins didn't change his life, I think that fans of that band would also enjoy Normandy as would any fan of catchy upbeat indie pop-rock. Fans of Normandy has graciously made the entire Time I've Wasted EP available for download from their myspace site. Load it up on your iPod or your Zune, plug it into your MP3 player equipped automobile, roll down the windows, and head out for a drive. Or just listen on the train Read more:inches

Freeze to spread skeleton wings 2007-05-01 14:05:00 The latest (and third) full-length album from Great Lake Swimmers is called Ongiara and it is utterly fantastic. I loved their previous two albums, so this came as no surprise to me. Ongiara is full of ethereal rootsy indie-folk that revels as much in its relaxed atmospherics as it does in its haunting melodies. Frontman Tony Dekker often sounds like a mellow Neil Young whose vocals are awash in an ocean of natural reverb. There is also and alt-country flavor that permeates through Ongiara but never overwhelms it. It is a soft and hushed affair, but also a highly affecting album that (IMHO) has some gospel-like qualities as well. Almost like a spiritual journey deep into the Canadian wilderness up streams and rivers, past rocky outcroppings, and through the deepest pine forests. RIYL: Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon, lullaby songs, etc...Ongiara is available now through iTunes here in the US but on an actual CD if you live elsewhere.MP3 | Great Lake Swimmers - Catcher Son OngiaraMP3 | Great L Read more:Freeze
Orange skies and purple flowers 2007-05-01 02:37:00 Blair is a singer/songwriter from New Orleans, LA and her music is self-described as "Dolly Parton meets Radiohead meets Neil Young meets uptown New Orleans." I'm not so sure about the Radiohead, but her soon-to-be-released EP Pluto is filled with soothing country-tinged indie-folk-pop tunes. She may be singing about the effects of Hurricane Katrina and how it ravaged New Orleans, but (for me at least) the songs are calming. Her beautiful voice and quiet acoustic guitar are charming in a way that will make you forget everything that ails you. There is (however) an underlying vulnerability that makes the music even more captivating. Maybe that's why I've been listening to these songs all day.MP3 | Blair - Mona Lisa Pluto EPMP3 | Blair - Blues Song Pluto EP Read more:Orange
If at first you don't succeed 2007-05-05 15:25:00 Novi Split is David Jerkovich and company from San Pedro, California. They make music. More specifically, they (he) makes breezy indie pop that seems to make it self at home between the sounds of chirping birds outside and the dishwasher. It is completely unforced and unpretentious, and unassuming but ornamented. David has played in groups like Kind Of Like Spitting, The Real Diego, and Ill Lit. On Novi Split's full-length Pink In The Sink it shows. The songs are filled up with gentle drumming, acoustic guitars, occasional strings, and David's plaintive but pleasant voice. It is simple and melancholy folk-influenced indie pop that probably won't inspire you to dance or shout, but sometimes you just need to relax. Please beware the quiet front yard 2007-05-04 14:50:00 Jona Bechtolt is a Portland-based producer/singer/songwriter and plain old mischief maker who records solo using the moniker Yacht and as part of the indie-pop duo The Blow. As Yacht, Bechtolt combines bubbly electronics and quirky pop with the reckless joy and abandon of a little kid in a candy store on his latest album I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real. Or like a kid jumping from puddle to puddle after a big rain.I Believe In You. Staring at white lines on the road 2007-05-06 16:33:00 Bremerton, WA pop-punk band MxPx has a new album called Secret Weapon due out on Tooth & Nail Records in July, so I thought it might be a good time to revisit the band's music. It is sometimes hard to believe that MxPx has been around for almost 15 years now. The band was formed when the members were still in high school and sound hasn't evolved all that much. They play (and always have played) fast, poppy, and melodic punkish tunes that are generally of the non-threatening variety. They are often thrown into the Christian rock category, I think that is a bit of a mistake. Yes, the band subscribes to Christian ideals, but they don't preach it in their music. It is more about skate rock and girls (IMHO).I've been an MxPx fan for almost as long as they have been a band and I have just about everything they've released. And calling MxPx prolific would be a huge understatement. They are prolific almost to a fault. Although the band has grown over the years, they really haven't progre Read more:Staring

Feisty white corn chips in amsterdam 2007-05-10 13:57:00 Leslie Feist is a member of Broken Social Scene and records solo simply as Feist. After hearing a review of the new Feist album on NPR a few weeks ago I decided that I should give her new album The Reminder a listen and then wished I had done so much much sooner. It was recorded on the outskirts of Paris in only two weeks and is absolutely fantastic warm and airy Parisienne Americana (whatever that means). Anyhow, this album has been written about by just about everyone everywhere including here, here, here, here, here, and even here. So rather than just rehash what they've all said, I'll just add a few comments.Feist's vocals are subtle, fragile, and the focal point of the album. They are thin-sounding but captivating. Islands in the stream 2007-05-10 03:45:00 The Brooklynites in Palomar have returned with their fourth full-length All Things, Forests and after hearing the album I'm surprised that is the first I've ever heard from the band. All Things, Forests is bouncy but bitter female-fronted indie-pop rock that reminds me of The Cranberries flirting with Travis when they are both obviously more interested in Rainer Maria. Too moody and too rockin' to call it twee. When Rachel Warren's sweet breathy vocals cascade up against vibrant piano melodies and crunchy fuzzed-out guitars it is something you just gotta hear. Simple but engaging melodies that are poppy but a little dark and (strangely) remind me of both Alkaline Trio and Jenny Lewis. Palomar's sound might be a little sour but at its core is decidedly sugary sweet. Yeah its a little this and a little that, but its poppy and it rocks and if it wasn't for some bad luck I'm sure the band would be way bigger by now.All Things, Forests is out now on the great Misra Records.MP3 Read more:Islands
Fighting to make it over the james 2007-05-09 04:12:00 Amy and I have recently taught our daughter Hailey the word "punk." And when we ask her if she is a little punk, she says (or rather, yells) "PUNK! Yeah!" She's one-and-a-half mind you. When can we start putting pins on her jackets? I can only hope that she will grow up to love punk music and embrace its ideals.Anyhow, one of the few punk bands around right now that still makes me go bitchcakes like I was 16 or 17 is RVA's Smoke Or Fire. Their latest (and second) full-length This Sinking Ship is out now and its another slab of melodic but gruff and gritty punk rock with songs about what punk rock songs are about: drinking, politics, and the shitty state of the world. It is a truly uncomplicated and working-class album. Smoke Or Fire is a band whose music should be played too loud and shouted along to. Their sound is fast and powerful but has catchy sing-a-long hooks exactly when it needs to. Sennheiser cx300 earphones 2007-05-09 02:58:00 I recently got a pair of Sennheiser
CX300 sound-isolating earphones
and really love em. They are another set of phones that I would recommend for people who are fed up with the cruddy sound quality and comfort that standard-issue iPod or Zune earbuds provide. There are many positive qualities that the Sennheiser CX300 earphones possess. One is that these earphones have an ultra-comfortable in ear design that blocks out a majority of distracting background noise and are smaller than a lot of other in ear headphones. When sealed and fitted with the correctly sized ear pads, the sound isolation is pretty good and the bass response is terrific. Another thing I really like about these earphones is that they are very reasonably priced. With a MSRP of only $89.95 (although I found them at various online retailers for about half that) everyone with a portable MP3 player can now enjoy great sounding earphones that are comfortable to wear without breaking the bank.Although I like the Sennheiser C

Their latest Night Choreography is full of blissfully fuzzed out indie rock that recalls Sonic Youth and Unwound. Loud, noisy, and abrasive describes their bombastic slack-tuned assault. Riddles full of syllables 2007-05-12 03:27:00 So yesterday I sent my computer back to Dell because a broken heat sink was causing it to get hotter than the surface of the sun. Because of this I am forced to find alternate means of blogging which means my work laptop which (for some reason or another) won't connect to our wireless network and so I'm writing this from the depths of the basement. Anyhow, luckily I have some great music to keep me calm through all of this. So a week or two ago I found a truly wonderful song posted by Amy on her fantastic blog Shake Your Fist. It was a sprawling minimal techno track called "Daddaughter" by Frenchman Nicolas Matuszczak who (simply) goes by Matzak. For one reason or another the song really moved me. His entire debut album Life Beginnings was created during the nine months that his new daughter was in-utero and it is "pregnant" with meaning and growing love. That alone would be enough to draw me to this music, but the music itself is gorgeous. It is warm and playful IDM electronica that
Three thousand steps and glory bound 2007-05-11 04:22:00 The Gaslight Anthem is a band from New Jersey and their new album is called Sink Or Swim. Open it up and you'll find raw and ragged punk rock with a slightly rootsy feel. Lucero meets Good Riddance if you will. Gruff like a cheap bottle of whiskey but catchy enough to warrant a second shot. It makes you warm inside but might leave you regretting it in the morning. I'm going to classify it as a brand new genre called honky-tonk hardcore. The guitars ferociously rip and shred but retain just enough twang and jangle that you can envision dusty old boots kicking open a saloon door somewhere while the gritty vocals reek of cigarettes and alcohol. It sounded perfect during my 3 mile sunset jog this evening. I've got a feeling that you might like it too.
