Many artists are let down by the low pay at the major publishers in comic book industry and turn to self-publishing. Not exactly the most lucrative venture for some, but if you have the right product you can make yourself a good sum of money. Support Patrick and check his site. Billy Hooten, Owlboy 2007-06-13 07:01:51 Billy
Hooten: Owlboy
Some writers and illustrators take themselves a bit too seriously when having fun with comic book writing and illustration. Not Tom Sniegoski and Eric Powell who created Billy Hooten, Owlboy. This is a return to the old school of comic book reading. Not to be confused with Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky who created Owlman, Owlboy is a personification of what it is to grow up as a little boy in a world of adversity. Billy Hooten: Owlboy should be hitting the stands in July.
Billy Hooten is a weird kid. He gets beaten up a lot, and spends the rest of his time doggedly trying to build a robot. One day, Billy Hooten hears a cry for help coming from the cemetery that borders his backyard. Against his better judgment, he runs toward it. And after that, everything changes for Billy Hooten. Because Billy Hooten, you see, is Owlboy. A quickthinking, goggle-and-feather-wearing superhero who protects the bizarre and monstrous citizens of Monstros City, a city

I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets: The Comics of Fletcher Hanks 2007-06-28 12:09:51
I Shall Destroy All the CivilizedPlanets
: The Comics
of FletcherHanks
When I first read about this book I knew exactly what I was getting. The image of "Stardust" was etched in my skull from the back cover of "Men Of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters, and the Birth of the Comic Book", by Gerad Jones. Fletcher Hanks has to be the Ed Wood of comics. The stories are so wild, that you enjoy the stupidity of it all. The gem in this book is Paul Karasik’s story of "Whatever Happened to Fletcher Hanks". This story is either a tribute to It’s a Good Life, If You Don’t Weaken by Seth or just about every fan-boy who lives in his basement searches for their heroes or misplaced youth. There are many parallels to Seth’s work, however, Fletcher is an evil crusted person unlike Seth’s Kalo, a make believe cartoonist from the New Yorker. Read more>>sandbox world, tony medeiros
The Wizard 2007-06-27 20:14:16
The Wizard
There is an old Uriah Heep song called "The Wizard" which conjures images of Brandbon Dorman’s new book called, "The Wizard". This is Brandon’s first children’s illustrated book and written by Jack Prelustsky (an artist in his own right). Brandon has great control of color and line and you can sample some of his spellbound art in Brandon’s blog.
The wizard, watchful, waits alone within his tower of cold gray stone and ponders in his wicked way what evil deeds he’ll do this day.
What do you think the wizard is planning to do? Conjure a magic spell? Turn a frog into a flea? Fill a cauldron with bubbling brew?
You may think you know . . . but watch out. Because if the wizard is bored, he may come looking for you!

The Incredible Mr. Limpet 2007-07-01 08:01:35
The Incredible
Mr. Limpet
Mr. Limpet is an oddity in the cinematic world, it pretends to be a kids’ movie but yet it is not. It’s not an adult movie, it has been crowned a classic but many will argue that statement. One thing is for sure, it is well produced with the top talent of the the time. There was talk in the past years of a remake of the movie, big names were cast but the bait never materialised. Personally, I think the movie should be left alone, it is a quasi-classic with many time period capsules of innocence. With a touch of Mayberry flourishing under the sea, Don Knotts celebrates a period in relationships when things were black and white, unlike our murky new jangled cauldron of mixed emotions. The Wonderful Thing About Hiccups 2007-07-01 06:53:20
The WonderfulThing
About Hiccups
Hiccups and kids are hilarious in many levels, many wonder where it comes from and continuously keep talking while they hiccup. Some kids love to scare other kids to cure hiccups. Everybody has a remedy for a cure, but Cece Meng and Janet Pederson have the perfect cure, laughter will solve any hiccup with this little tale.
It starts with a case of hiccups during story time at the library. And that leads to an outrageous and hilarious adventure involving a hippo, a little sister, an overturned ice cream cart, a librarian who’s afraid of heights, and a stack of library books that must be returned-on time and in good condition-if the narrator is going to get her very own library card. And nothing could be more wonderful than that! Brightly colored, energetic illustrations make the most of the slapstick humor in this rollicking readaloud. sandbox world, tony medeiros

What a great idea - illustrator Bryan
Ballinger creates drawings and 3-D renderings of models for odd and absurd toy figures. From the futuristic Doggiebot to the subversively slouching Chicken Man, Ballinger’s Taterbot showcase the illustrator’s wit as well as his serious skills. Now all we need is for some toy companies to step in and offer to make some custom vinyl toys. Paleo Sharks: Survival of the Strangest 2007-07-03 07:11:27
Paleo Sharks
: Survival of the Strangest
Paleo sharks were the largest sharks from the times of dinosaurs, they make the sharks of today seem like the tamest creatures in the waters. This is one time period in shark history not illustrated or talked about much, kids will love the richly drawn pictures in this 48 page volume of shark history.
Megalodon was very similar to today’s great white shark—except in size. The great white can grow to about 25 feet long and weigh about 2 tons (4,000 pounds). But scientists believe megalodon grew up to 50 feet long and might have weighed close to 50 tons! Megalodon ate anything it wanted. Its huge and powerful jaws were packed with 6-inch-tall, razor-edged, triangular teeth that sliced through its prey. Megalodon probably hunted the biggest fish and whales that swam the oceans of the Cenozoic era.sandbox world, tony medeiros
